KOCH HAZARD ARCHITECTS 65 YEARS OF IMPACT Written by ALANA SNYDER and Photos by JOHN SNYDER

STACEY MCMAHAN

“At the center of everything we do is a simple, but powerful purpose,” said Koch Hazard Architects principal Stacey McMahan . “We strengthen community with intention and creativity.” Community is something the architectural firm strives to build on every day, with their project team, downtown Sioux Falls office, neighborhoods, and schools. “Our purpose is more than a statement, it is a calling and our responsibility,” continued McMahan. “It challenges us to think differently, care more deeply, and to recognize that the work we do leaves a lasting mark on the people and communities around us.” The mid-sized design firm was started in 1961 by Ralph Koch with Bob Hazard joining in 1969. Since their beginnings and continued growth, they have specialized in all areas of architecture, planning, and interior design.

KOCH HAZARD OFFICE AT FALLS CENTER

Jeff Hazard joined Koch Hazard in 1988 and became “one of the defining architects of modern Sioux Falls.” “His arrival back in Sioux Falls coincided with a renewed interest in downtown, and I think his work helped show that architecture in South Dakota could be ambitious, contextual, and deeply rooted in place,” said architect Nolan Hazard , who is also his nephew. The firm sees downtown as the heart of the city and is also where their office is located in Falls Center (which is also in their portfolio). “Koch Hazard has played a vital role in preserving many of Sioux Falls’ historic buildings, guiding the planning and development of Phillips Avenue and Falls Park , and supporting initiatives that have strengthened the downtown creative and arts community,” said architect Mason O’Farrell . O’Farrell and Nolan say McMahan often notes “there’s not a place you can go downtown where you couldn’t pick up a rock and hit a building Koch Hazard has worked on.”

“Design directly impacts how spaces feel, function, and connect people.” MASON O’FARRELL

AWARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT Here are some of the ways McMahan says Koch Hazard is environmentally conscious: Built Environment Koch Hazard’s projects are all unique responses, while being respectful of the neighborhood and site. Natural Environment One of their basic tenets is to design buildings that do less harm to the environment, including lower energy and water usage, landscaping with native or adapted plantings, and renovating buildings when possible. Indoor Environment A special focus is designing with natural light and healthier indoor environments provided with fresh air and greater control over one's thermal environment, like being able to open a window.

DENNY SANFORD PREMIER CENTER

The team has become known for designing significant regional projects, historic renovations, and urban development, including the Washington Pavilion , the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center , and the National Music Museum . Highlights from the last five years are the LifeScape Campus , several large K-12 schools, historic renovations of Lincoln Hall at the University of South Dakota and Beadle Hall at Dakota State University , several non-profit projects, and the adaptive reuse of both of Sioux Falls’ historic train depots. Koch Hazard has equally become known for giving back when they can, utilizing their creative edge. “We volunteer and do special projects the budget wouldn’t cover,” said McMahan. “We’ve constructed raised garden beds for the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum [and East Sioux Falls Historic Site] , created rammed earth benches for the St Francis House , trash enclosures for StartUp Sioux Falls , hundreds of folded origami cranes done by hand for Children’s Home Society , and donated partial services to many.”

Along with big wins, the team has also had personal hardships, like the 2019 death of Jeff from leukemia. “It was a real shock to our system, everything went by so quickly without an ability to ready ourselves,” said McMahan. Principal Keith Thompson recalls the outpour of support from all over. “It reminded us what an impact he had,” said Thompson. “Just trying to live up to that impact is enough of a goal to keep us going.” The recent promotion of O’Farrell and Hazard was a move to continue Koch Hazards’ legacy and commitment to design excellence, collaboration, and a long-term partnership with the communities they serve. Thompson says the transition has been rooted in continuity with the next generation of leadership stepping forward to carry those values in their own way.

“We have deep and broad experience, we’re easy to work with, and want to make each project the very best it can possibly be.” KEITH THOMPSON

FUN FACT: Koch Hazard has won the most AIA Awards in the state.

“We’re probably younger than any time recently, which is great and exciting,” said Thompson. “We have a group of extremely driven, talented people who all work together very well.” Now they’re celebrating their 65th anniversary, which will commence with a party June 26 from 4-6 p.m. followed by a Levitt at the Falls concert across the street sponsored by none other than Koch Hazard. The Vindys will be taking the stage from Youngstown, OH surrounded by food trucks and community vibes. The anniversary is also a time to reflect on how far they’ve come and where they’re planning to go with their reinvigorated team. “A firm does not reach 65 years because of one person or one project,” said Nolan. “It happens because of clients who trust you, communities that invite you into important work, contractors and consultants who collaborate with you, and generations of people inside the firm who care about doing good work.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT KOCH HAZARD.COM+

PRESERVING HISTORY DISCOVER LAURA

Readers from all over the world have fond recollections from the Little House on the Prairie book series, which vividly portrays the challenges and adventures of the frontier. Written by Laura Ingalls Wilder , the semi-autobiographical collection of nine books chronicles her early years to her married life. This includes the Ingalls family’s travels, struggles, and daily life through her eyes. Five of the nine books take place in De Smet, where they moved to in the fall of 1879 and spent their first South Dakota winter in the Surveyor’s House (highlighted in By the Shores of Silver Lake ). The family eventually settled in the Original Ingalls Home built by Charles , or “Pa.” Visitors can literally step inside history with the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Homes tours, thanks to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society .

“Within weeks of Laura Ingalls Wilder's passing in 1957, Alice Kirchmeier , Aubrey Sherwood , and Vera McCaskell founded the society in dedication to preserve and restore Ingalls Wilder heritage,” said executive director Mary Jo Wertz . Starting out with memorial plaques, the Society grew into the refurbished Surveyor’s House and “the house that Pa built,” along with the

original First School of De Smet and a growing collection of Ingalls Wilder artifacts. Thousands of tourists began coming to De Smet to tour the homes, school, and Exhibition Room to relive Little House firsthand. “Some of the sweetest memories I have regarding the actual artifacts we hold involve the pantry of the Surveyors’ House,” said Wertz. “I

can almost hear 12-year-old Laura squeal with delight at the sight of the food. I can picture Mary braiding rugs while sitting in the rocking chair. I love that there are still chalk drawings on the original blackboard of the First School, and I cherish the cozy home Pa built where the family finally settled.” She continued, “All of these pieces connect me with a friend I’ve never met.”

portrays an elderly Laura. The day will also feature pioneer demonstrations, including soap making, barbed-wire making, shoe making, and more.

The Society has welcomed visitors from all 50 states and 38 countries. Wertz says they have seen guests from every country in Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South America, and a few from Africa. In the summer, tour guides wear period dress, and it’s not uncommon for guests to dive into the pioneer spirit themselves. Some simply wear bonnets while others look like they stepped right out of the 19th-century prairie. The Discovery Center is open June through August and is a space for non- digital play. Children can dress up in prairie costumes, play house with a cast-iron stove, pretend to do the wash, and "attend" school. “They can learn about hunting and animal tracks, touch real animal furs, practice writing with a stencil just as Mary did, use an old-fashioned sewing machine, and truly let their imaginations run wild,” said Wertz. New this year is the First Families of De Smet , which preserves the legacy of early settlers who shaped the town. The exhibit was the brainchild of one of the Society’s interns, Grace Schaefer , who worked on it for two summers. Volunteers Cheryl Palmlund , Eric Fairchild , and Cindy Wilson brought her vision to life.

“Each display case features a founding member of De Smet mentioned in Laura’s books,” said Wertz. “As an unexpected addition, we also have a number of postcards belonging to Carrie Ingalls , written to her by family and neighbors.” Someone in Deadwood contacted the Society about the cards after discovering them in a paper bag at an antique mall, and Wertz says they were thrilled to acquire them for the exhibit. As a “community-rooted” non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, efforts like the new exhibit are made possible through the work of local volunteers and the gifts from Laura’s readers from around the world. “I can’t speak for everyone, but I think readers are so loyal because Laura wasn’t just a character; she was a real person living real events,” said Wertz. “You remember when and where you first read them until they become a part of you. It’s deeply personal.” Donations can be made on their website or by shopping at the Gift Shop . Along with general operations, funds help immediate needs like foundation repair for the Surveyor’s House, educational supplies for school friend trips and summer programs, humidity control improvements for artifacts, and more.

“There are memories from reading the 'Little House' series that stay with me forever—Pa wanting to be far away from neighbors, or Ma slapping the bear.”

“Protecting buildings of this age is our greatest responsibility,” said Wertz. “Because we are locally supported, their care relies on our visitors, our gift shop, and the generosity of those who believe Laura’s story deserves authentic stewardship.” History, she continues, is vital to preserve. And Laura’s history is “everyman’s history,” which makes it unique. “It’s the story of the people who brought us into the 20th century with grit and grace,” said Wertz. “These were the parents and grandparents of the Greatest Generation . The same blood and grit running through their veins is in ours as well. Every generation faces trials; learning how our ancestors overcame theirs is essential in our

own troubled world.” FOR MORE

Yankton

CULTURE + ENTERTAINMENT

When planning a 605 Sprinter Van Trip to Yankton last July, Brittany Wagner of Yankton Thrive wanted every stop to represent a different side of the town. “Some locations highlighted outdoor adventure and recreation, while others focused on local flavor, history, shopping, or entertainment,” said the director of tourism. “We also wanted places that created memorable experiences for visitors, whether that was waterfront views, unique dining experiences, or hidden gems locals love.” From all of the food and drinks, experiences, and events, check out 605’s itinerary during our quick (and entertaining) summer vacation.

THURSDAY, JULY 31

10 a.m. 605 pulled into town in our Sprinter Van, Vincent Van-Go , and arrived at Lewis & Clark Resort to check into our three bedroom, lake-side cabin. Located in the Lewis & Clark Recreation Area along the Missouri River , the relaxed getaway offers a variety of lodging, including log cabins, cottages, motel/hotel rooms, and camping. The largest option, The Lodge , is 4,000 square feet specializing in hosting larger groups and/or events. “It’s an ideal setting for everything from family vacations and reunions to weddings and group retreats—laid-back, scenic, and designed for making memories on the water,” said Wagner. There is on-site recreation available, including a new heated outdoor pool, a playground, sand volleyball, basketball, picnic shelters, and firepits. Rentals are also available to take advantage of the outdoors, like bicycles, volleyball, croquet, boche ball, lasso golf, bean bags, and more. Check out the full- service marina with fuel, boat service, and boat slips available. Powerboats, fishing boats, and pontoons make for a fun day.

11:30 a.m. After unpacking and taking in the Missouri River air, we left for The Bonesetter Apothecary on West 3rd Street, located in a historic building from 1869. The brick and mortar that’s known for “wellness, naturally,” has health tonics, natural beauty and body care, herbal remedies and supplements, candles, gifts, refillable cleaning products, essential oils, and more. Owner Dr. Teri Kramer also offers Red Light in the Self- Care Suite and Halotherapy in the Salt Vault (located in an old bank vault). They’re also known for their tea, which the team got to taste at the Tea Bar . “I have both what I call functional and dessert teas here—teas that are still good for you, but blended more for the palate,” said Kramer. “Then there are ones blended specifically to settle your stomach or help your hormones or whatever; the more functional stuff. We have all of that.” The apothecary hosts events and has different speakers, including her husband, Dr. TJ Stotz , who is a chiropractor and owner of The Bonesetter Chiropractic . 1:30 p.m. After a relaxing time of tea and shopping, the crew set off for Studio Seven , a pilate reformer studio owned by Kennedy Frick . Frick and her other instructor, Stephanie Rockne , lead four classes: Move (entry class), Elevate (intermediate), Burn (floor and reformer combination), and HIIT (foundations of reformer pilates with high- intensity interval training). Frick says she’s always been into fitness, and had broken her back in high school playing basketball. “I spent a lot of years trying to build my strength back up, trying to do exercises that made me feel good and not set me back even further,” she recalled. She discovered reformer pilates when she lived in Nashville later on, and immediately found it helpful with her painful areas. Frick let us watch a class, and then the whole 605 team gave it a try.

3 p.m. Feeling loosened up and ready for more movement, we said our goodbyes and met Tom Downs at a boat launch at Lake Yankton for a Missouri National Recreational River (MNRR) Kayak Lesson . After going over safety training, we were debriefed on how to get into the kayak and the best way to paddle, including which ways to move and how to turn. The weather was beautiful and made for a calm ride. These clinics are offered free of charge by the National Park Service to help people learn, practice, and feel confident on the water. Sessions are for all skill levels, and are typically held Wednesdays from mid-June through early September. “After instruction, participants get to enjoy a fun time on the water, making it an approachable and memorable way to try something new and experience our waters up close,” said Wagner. Registration is free, but sessions fill up fast. Reservations are encouraged.

5:15 p.m. After working up an appetite, we were ready to dig in at Kuirk’s Bistro on Douglas Avenue. Whether guests are joining them for a meal or are taking advantage of their catering, the bistro offers a gourmet menu described as a “celebration of flavor, artistry, and seasonal ingredients.” Owner Kourtney Erickson specializes in everything from smash burgers (they notably won the Best Burger Patty in Yankton award) to veggie burgers to “chicken sandys” to salads. “I wanted to bring as much as I could to Yankton that's different, fresh, or as fresh as you can get,” said Kourtney. “I'll do as much as I can from scratch.” Her parents are her landlords, who also run a vacation rental on the south side of the building. Her mother, Lisa , says Kuirk has two meanings behind it—Kourtney’s “quirkiness,” and the second k in the name represents their late daughter, Kaitlyn , who they lost to cancer at the age of 21. One of the most popular made-from- scratch items is Kourtney’s cheesecake and other desserts. “She's not afraid to try things, which is amazing,” said Lisa. “I love her carrot cake. It's four or five layers and is fantastic.”

“Whether someone’s coming for adventure, relaxation, family time, or just a quick getaway, there’s a good chance they’ll leave wanting to come back.” BRITTANY WAGNER

6:30 p.m. Evening had arrived, and the team parked at Music at the Meridian in Riverside Park by the infamous Meridian Bridge . The free summer concert held on Thursday nights in July is a newer event, but has quickly become one of Yankton’s signature summer experiences. There is a rotating lineup of regional live music, along with food trucks, drinks, and “a relaxed atmosphere.” “It’s designed as a true community event, with children’s activities that make it fun for families as well,” said Wagner. “What makes it special is how naturally it brings people together—locals, visitors, and families all gathering along the river to enjoy a summer evening in Yankton.” July 31 opened up with The Brassholes with headliner IVORY . Along with food vendors, there was a community mural project and local beer by Ben’s Brewing Company . 8 p.m. Feeling like a nightcap, 605 swung by The Ice House to break a bottle under the former loading dock (a Yankton rite of passage). We ended at The Brewery rooftop bar on Walnut Street for views of town as the sun set, with local brews in hand as we listened to live music and reflected on the day.
