APRIL 2024

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA In Minnesota, April is synonymous with spring, as crocuses pop up through the remaining snow, and a green haze appears in the tree canopy. Even after our unusually balmy winter season, the arrival of spring is still a tremendous accomplishment. This time of rebirth is also a reminder of the beautiful world we share, so it is fitting that Earth Day occurs in April. On Monday, April 8 on TPT 2, we will premiere a special concert honoring songwriting masterminds Elton John and Bernie Taupin, who recently received the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. As the creators of classic songs such as “Bennie and the Jets” and “Rocket Man,” you are sure to walk away humming some of their melodies. We also premiere a new episode of American Experience, Poisoned Ground: The Tragedy at Love Canal , which chronicles one of the most devastating environmental disasters in U.S. history. The film centers on the women of Love Canal who raised their voices and fought for accountability in the wake of the disaster. Airing on TPT 2 on Monday, April 22, the film is a powerful reminder of the relationship between the planet, people and public health. The end of April also marks the premiere of another new Minnesota Experience film, Profe , on Tuesday, April 23. The documentary centers on three Latina educator-activists who shed light on their efforts to offer culturally affirming education to Latine students at two Twin Cities schools, El Colegio in Minneapolis and Academia Cesar Chavez in Saint Paul. Profe combines historical interviews, archival and present- day footage to paint a picture of the Latine educational revolution in Minnesota — one which started with the Chicano Movement in the 1970s and continues to have real impact on Latine students today.

2023 Year in Review – TPT Learn

Focused on serving our local community and inspiring life-long learning, TPT Learn provides media-enriched and standards-aligned educational resources, training, and programming.

TPT Learn aims to address systemic barriers and educational inequities through community-based programming and initiatives, including: TPT Little Learners (pre-K-2): Little Learners provides training and resources to early childhood educators to help them integrate enriching PBS Kids content into preschools, daycares, and community- based programs across Minnesota. TPT Learn Academies (Grades 3-8): Embedded into Beacon’s Clubs, YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, and Saint Paul Public Schools, TPT Learn Academies provides resources around science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), media-making, music, and social emotional learning. Learn Academies engaged educators, children, and families with PBS resources and doubled the number of afterschool spaces served to 26 sites across the Twin Cities metro area.

Surveys of program participants found: • Over 90% of youth increased knowledge acquisition, self-efficacy, and appetite for further learning around STEM. • Over 95% of adults increased knowledge acquisition, self-efficacy, and appetite for further learning around STEM instruction. Code.org: With the goal of preparing and expanding Minnesota’s technology workforce, TPT trained formal K-12 educators to integrate computer science learning into their classrooms. TPT Family Fun: To prevent summer learning loss, TPT partnered with MELSA libraries and Saint Paul Parks and Recreation to provide educational experiences within the community.

Hype has given me opportunities I wouldn’t usually be exposed to in my day- to-day life. It’s given me a sense of clarity in who I am and what I’m fully capable of. – HYPE CREW MEMBER and resources that align with TPT-produced content, including Jim Crow of the North , Bring Her Home , STAGE , and more. These assets reach a national audience of 2.5 million educators on PBS LearningMedia, including more than 7,500 local teachers. To meet the needs of Minnesota’s educators, TPT Learn also produced standards-based activities

You make media less about watching and more about doing.

– CAREGIVER SURVEY RESPONSE

Hype : Informed by TPT’s 1992-2002 Don’t Believe the Hype youth media program, Hype is a youth- centered initiative that uses media-making as a pathway to civic engagement, leadership development, post-secondary education, and employment. Hype creates a space where historically underrepresented youth feel empowered to discuss issues impacting them and their communities. This year’s crew examined school violence, mental health, and representation in the arts in their capstone projects. • 90% of students came away with “a lot” or “some” knowledge of how to tell effective stories using media. • 90% learned about key issues and resources in their community and feel they are a positive role model for their peers because of Hype .

Meet Some Minnesota Trailblazers Who Light Up Our State’s History

Truly a master class in local history, TPT’s signature history series, Minnesota Experience , chronicles a blend of well-known and more obscure history stories that satisfy the trivia seeker in all of us. With four new films in 2024, the series introduces us to some of the individuals who have blazed a trail in our state’s history.

Jesse Ventura Shocks the World! – Now Streaming on the PBS App

A quarter century after Ventura’s stunning election victory, Jesse Ventura Shocks the World! looks back at the origins, evolution, and surprising impact of one of the nation’s most enigmatic governors. The documentary paints a vivid picture of how Ventura’s unique blend of charisma, authenticity, and non-partisan appeal resonated with Minnesotans and left an indelible mark on the state’s political history. Hope in the Struggle: The Josie Johnson Story – Now Streaming on the PBS App An inspiring reflection on the life and work of Freedom Fighter, civic leader, and community activist Dr. Josie Johnson, Hope in the Struggle chronicles her story in her own words from archival interviews over the years. The multigenerational impact of Josie Johnson offers a window into the day-to- day work of a movement and of those who have the courage to take it on every day of their lives. The Electric Indian – Now Streaming on the PBS App The Electric Indian takes us from the river hockey games of Henry Boucha’s youth at the northern tip of Minnesota to his rise to the U.S. Olympic Team and the NHL. Later in life, Boucha reflects on his upbringing in Warroad, his Ojibwe roots and history, his rise and fall due to a brutal eye injury, and the eventual redemption he found in his culture and traditions. Profe – Premieres on April 23 Through a bilingual, culturally affirming lens, two charter schools have adapted their curriculum and staffing to serve Latine students. But this fight has been decades in the making. The documentary combines historical interviews, and archival and present-day verité to paint a picture of the Latine educational revolution in Minnesota – one which started with the Chicano Movement in the 1970s and continues to have real impact in Latine students today.

Why Dark Skies Matter By Amy Grisak

Lying on my back in the darkness of the Montana prairie, the stars seemingly encompassed me. With no glare from homes or towns, the line blurred between earth and the cosmos, and not to sound like a cliché motivational poster, it truly felt as if I could touch the stars. I'm spoiled living where I do because experiencing novalunosis, defined as the state of relaxation and wonderment experienced while gazing upon the stars, is a rarity for many. Fewer than 80% of United States residents ever see the Milky Way, and with a 2% increase of light pollution encroaching more every year, each generation sees less of the dark skies of our ancestors. It's the one universal factor that spans the history of humanity, no matter our origins, but we're at risk of losing it completely. "Dark skies are important for a lot of reasons. It's not just the novelty of seeing the stars and the Milky Way," explained Michael Rymer of the International Dark Sky Association (IDA). "Birds, bats and a lot of pollinators are dependent upon night skies for navigation. If we interrupt the natural order of migratory patterns, we do ourselves a disservice."

Light pollution is particularly concerning when it comes to certain bats, particularly the little brown bat, which is already a species of concern, because they avoid lighted areas, and this cuts their feeding capabilities. Looking at a night sky map produced by NASA it's easy to see why avoiding light pollution is elusive, but the map is also a guide to discover where to experience a dark sky in all its wonder. The IDA, an internationally recognized steward of the night skies, offers official designations for areas that meet their stringent guidelines. The night sky is our ancient guidance system, a touchstone to our commonality and an ancient relationship with our Mother Earth. Yet as stars fade out of sight, it's time to protect our dark skies so future generations may experience this same sense of awe.

"Dark skies are important for a lot of reasons. It's not just the novelty of seeing the stars and the Milky Way."

Artificial lights illuminating the horizon can make migrating birds think it's still daylight, causing them to fly farther than they should for the day and potentially deplete precious energy reserves.

Learning to Play the Cello at 50 By Natasha Chaim

On a road trip to the Rocky Mountains about ten years ago, with our young children asleep in the back, my husband and I made a bucket list. The list still lives in the Notes App on my phone. I visit it at least once a year and lately am reminded of the passing of time and all the items we have yet to check off. On my fiftieth birthday, I decided that was the year I was going to check something off the list, starting with the one I could do for and by myself. Number 15. Learn to play the cello. It took me a long time to come to this decision, because over the years, I had convinced myself I wasn't "musical." I was someone who appreciated music but could never be a musician myself. I finally made both the commitment and the investment. I bought a used cello from a friend who was upgrading her instrument and who also hooked me up with her cello teacher. In March 2023, I started taking lessons from Victoria Clarke, who is 20 years older than me and has been teaching cello since the 1980s.

Victoria teaches using the Suzuki Method, a music teaching system developed by the Japanese violinist and educator Shinichi Suzuki. Unlike my belief about musical talent, Suzuki believed that one's musical ability is not innate; it's a skill that can develop with careful nurturing and training. He likened it to how children learn to speak languages through listening, imitation and repetition.

"Unlike my belief about musical talent, Suzuki believed that one's musical ability is not innate; it's a skill that can develop with careful nurturing and training."

My very first cello lesson was 45 minutes of learning how to hold the bow. We didn't even touch the cello. Ten months later, Victoria still spends a good 10 minutes of our lesson correcting or perfecting my bow hold or making me play one note over and over until she is happy with both my bow hold and my sound. At the beginning, my fingers and wrists would ache afterwards. I texted my cellist friend to ask if the soreness would go away and she assured me it would. I have a new appreciation not only for the talent, but also the physical stamina required to be an orchestra musician.
