AWT Labels & Packaging To Install W&H CI Press

AWT Labels & Packaging, South Elgin, Illinois, will be installing a new 52-inch, 10-color Miraflex Central Impression Cylinder press from Windmoeller & Hoelscher. The installation will begin in October with production scheduled for mid-November. The new press is equipped with 10 printing decks, automated wash up decks and several setup reduc- tion modules that reportedly allow for faster make- readies and color changes, automated viscosity controls for more consistent print quality and auto- mated tension controls. The press also has the capa- bility to register a topcoat to an already printed design. The AVT system provides automated sensing of visual defects while printing. The press will accept roll widths from 31.5 inches to 52 inches and can print an image up to 50 inches wide. The large repeat capabilities up to 31.5 inches will accommodate large format bags and pouches. Sleeve Label Market Share Estimated At 12 Percent Among multiple segments of the global label mar- ket, a new report finds that sleeve labels are antici- pated to be the fastest growing segment. The sleeve labels market is experiencing annual gains of 5.2 percent from $10.6 billion in 2016, ac- cording to a new report from Persistence Market Re- search. The growing demand for beverage and packaged food will drive advances in the industry. Flexographic printing is expected to be the most preferred printing technology among sleeve label manufacturers. Mounting Demand Asia-Pacific is expected to dominate the sleeve la- bels market and register the highest Compound An- nual Growth Rate of 6.2 percent. This trend is attributed to the mounting demand for beverage and packaged food China, India and ASEAN countries. Gaining Momentum North America, though a developed market with multiple market players, is expected to gain momen- tum in the later phase of the forecast period with fu- ture investments in the manufacturing sectors. The mature market of Europe is anticipated to wit- ness uneven growth throughout the forecast period. Moreover, Latin America and MEA sleeve labels mar- kets are expected to register sluggish growth, all over the forecast period.

AWA Releases Global PSA Market Study

able devices for stoma care and electrode terminals — currently represents only 2 percent of current demand, but is forecast to grow to 2020 at a healthy 7.7 percent.

New market research from AWA Alexander Watson Associates analyzes the global market for pressure sensitive adhesives. Taking into account the excep- tional growth in technology and in the demographics of the Asian countries, it is hardly surprising that, today, Asia represents 42 percent of global PSA de- mand; and AWA forecasts continuing growth in the region at a CAGR of 8.4 percent to 2020. The small but increasingly vibrant market in Africa and the Middle East also offers real growth over the next few years, at 4.4 percent. The long-established North American and European markets will also grow, but at more modest rates, and recent economic volatility in South America has slowed its previously dynamic growth prospects. The study shows that UV-curable hot melt adhe- sives are currently showing the greatest growth po- tential, but from a low base.Water-based — emulsion — PSAs command the highest market share today, and are expected to continue to enjoy a 6.7 percent Compound Annual Growth Rate to 2020. The medical market — for such uses as wound care, surgical incision films and tapes, and for wear-

It is, however, the tapes market where PSAs today perform expert tasks in nearly every advanced indus- try, particularly in terms of mechanical fastener re- placement, that AWA sees the highest global demand, currently 62 percent of the total. The market is pre- dicted to continue to enjoy very healthy annual growth. The long-established markets for pressure- sensitive labelstocks and graphic films will also grow, says AWA, but at much lower percentages.

Corrugated Recycled Content Reaches Nearly 50% The Corrugated Packaging Alliance (CPA) has an- nounced that advancements in papermaking technol- ogy and the availability of high-quality fiber have made it possible to reuse more old corrugated con- tainers (OCC) in the manufacturing process while at the same time maintaining the strength characteris- tics of new boxes. Raising The Bar The recovered paper utilization rate in container- board has been fairly stable during recent years, but it increased from 27 percent in 1990 to 47.3 percent in 2000 and reached 48.4 percent in 2015. The amount of fiber reused in boxes varies for dif- ferent applications, with recycled content being as high as 100 percent for the packaging of many con- sumer product goods items and as low as 38.4 per- cent for packaging direct food-contact items like fresh produce. Corrugated products can be made from 100% new fiber, 100% recycled fiber, or a blend of these fibers. The OCC recovery rate reached a record-high 92.9 percent in 2015.

New at Label Expo

Wide Array Sensors for Narrow Web Applications

BST North America will use Label Expo to demonstrate the many uses in narrow web for its AccuWeb brand WideArray edge sensors. WideArray sensors feature large detection ranges – up to 18½” - to accommodate variations in web width. As a result, web widths can be changed on the fly, eliminating the need to physically reposition edge sensors, which means time savings and reduced downtime. They also allow the operator to change web position with the touch of a button. WideArray sensors self calibrate, so they are ideal for applications with many web width changes or applica- tions needing frequent adjustments of the web position. Traditional optical edge sensors are highly sensitive to build up of dust and other contaminants, and traditional ultrasonic sensors react strongly to changes in air temperature and vertical web flutter. WideArray sensors eliminate both of these limitations.

New Dual Edge Technology

New DualEdge ™ Technology allows a single WideArray edge sensor to monitor both edges of the width web simultaneously, for highly

Every WideArray sensor features AccuWeb’s patented Compensated Array Technology, which automatically compensates for dust, changes in temperature and humidity, as well as web flutter variances. As a result, the Infrared WideArray is ideal for non-woven applications, where dust and lint are common problems. WideArray sensors also eliminate the need for mechanical edge seeking devices, and they have no moving parts, which means no maintenance.

accurate centerline guiding of web widths up to 18.4 inches. They are used with the EVO 150 controller, a very compact package that offers many communication protocols, and is capable of oscillation, electronic guide point adjustment, web width measurement and web position monitoring. WideArray Sensors can be seen at Label Expo in the BST North America booth, # 837.

Yellowstone Plastics Invests In KBA-Flexotecnica Press Yellowstone Plastics, a flexographic packaging pro- ducer, has inked a contract to purchase a new KBA- Flexotecnica EVO XG 10-color press — its first from the company. The new press is scheduled to arrive at Yellowstone’s facility in Idaho Falls, Idaho, after the first of the year and be operational in early 2017. “Due to our growth, our firm is being asked to take on additional capacity while our customers are seek- ing faster turnaround and more high-end, life-like de- signs on their flexo packaging products,” said Daniel Mueller, President and CEO of Volm Companies.“The trend is toward more than simple six-color line print- ing for eight to ten-color process work. Rather than just printing a potato on the pouch, we’re printing an image of the family that grew the potatoes or the field where they were grown. This is an important ca- pability for us to have for our core industry of potato farmers as well as our lawn and garden clients. We felt the EVO XG would deliver on all accounts.” Faster Speeds, Less Downtime Because Yellowstone’s customers now require short- er lead times, Mueller expressed interest in press au- tomation to bring the press up to print faster, decrease downtime, and reduce waste. His team was also inter- ested in KBA-Flexotecnica’s preventive maintenance programs available from the North American Dallas, Texas, headquarters and the flexibility of KBA-Flex- otecnica to custom-engineer its press. The scheduled KBA-Flexotecnica’s preventive maintenance program is available for all KBA customers in NorthAmerica. The Flexotecnica EVO XG 10-color press being in- stalled at Yellowstone features a host of new technol- ogy. It reportedly facilitates minimal start-up times when changing jobs, and the patented auto impres- sion (AIF) and register control reportedly keep start- up waste to a minimum. Meeting the challenge to speed turnaround time and reduce costs,Yellowstone chose components like the Speedy Clean automatic wash-up system and in-line viscosity control with InkSpec viscometers, auto-impression setting, and click-and-drag zero-waste registration along with nu- merous quality control options such as a 100 percent inspection camera and in-line color control using an inline photospectrodensitometer. Yellowstone’s newly-expanded production facility has five wide web flexo CI presses up to 67-inch web width and up to 10 colors with special options available for packaging exceeding 67-inches in web width. It uses solvent-based inks as well as fade and weather-resistant inks for outdoor applications.

FINAT Benchmarks Europe’s Label Industry

Classified Advertising

FINAT, the international association for the label in- dustry, just published the fifth edition of its half-year- ly FINAT Radar, an industry trends report and analysis covering the European narrow-web market. FINAT Radar is based on an extensive online survey carried out among FINAT converter members in Eu- rope and members of the affiliated European national label print associations, and on FINAT’s regularly up- dated labelstock statistics. Jules Lejeune, FINAT MD, presenting highlights from this new issue of RADAR during the association’s recent European Label Forum in Amsterdam, was able to confirm that the in- dustry as a whole continues to enjoy ‘buoyant growth’ at around 5 percent — well above European GDP — with label converting companies increasing their sales revenues on average by more than 8 per- cent in 2015. End Use Changes In response to a changing profile in end user/brand owner demand, average run lengths reduced signifi- cantly. With multi-versioning, multi-language, and multi-location labelling operations, plus a current re- quirement for ‘fast to market’ product introductions and special editions/personalization, end-user compa- nies now often specify ‘just in time’ label deliveries — so print runs are naturally contracting. This is true for both conventional analog and digital label print. As a result, analog print runs have reduced by an av- erage 22 percent, and digital print runs by 12 per- cent, with the beverage, health and beauty, and consumer durables segments showing the sharpest declines. “In the complex mix of traditional, hybrid, and digi- tal print technologies which now characterize our in- dustry”, said Lejeune, “current research shows that nearly one third of survey participants intend to in- vest in digital label presses in the next six months — for the first time overtaking printers’ commitment to buying conventional presses. Many FINAT member companies are now additionally investing in alterna- tive product decoration technologies such as shrink- and stretch-sleeve, in-mould labels, and even flexible pouches.” Geographically, while Europe’s ‘top ten’ label mar- kets continue to account for 75 percent of total label consumption, east European markets, particularly Poland,Turkey, and Russia are visibly increasing their share. In terms of end-use markets, pharmaceuticals, health and beauty care, and food labelling were the strongest performers in 2015.
