LINCOLN HIGHWAY DESIGNATED A NATIONAL SCENIC BYWAY

Nebraska’s portion of the old Lincoln Highway — America’s first designated transcontinental highway — now enjoys national as well as state “scenic byway” status. The state’s entire 450-mile-long stretch of U.S. Highway 30 was recently named a National Scenic Byway by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration. It’s one of two byways that became Nebraska’s first on the national list, with the other being the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway on Nebraska Highway 2 from Grand Island to Alliance. Nationwide, 34 National Scenic Byways and 15 “All- American Roads” were added by FHwA this year to its America’s Byways Collection. The roads are recognized for their archaeological, cultural, historical, natural, recreational and scenic qualities. To be designated a National Scenic Byway, a road must possess at least one of those six qualities and be regionally significant. wiDe selection Camping this summer? See us first?

“America’s byways are roads to the very heart and soul of America,” Chris Sieverdes, the president of the National Scenic Byway Foundation, said in a press release. “Byways connect us to this country’s beauty, history and culture.” The roads are the first additions to the 30-year-old national program since 2009. The FHwA has designated 109 National Scenic Byways and 35 All-American Roads in all. Nebraska’s Lincoln Highway byway initially included only U.S. 30 in Dawson and Lincoln counties. The then- Nebraska Department of Roads extended the designation statewide in 2004. A map on the route’s website, which can be found at lincolnhighwaynebraskabyway.com, includes both the original 1913 route through Omaha and Elkhorn and its 1930s rerouting through Blair. The two meet at Fremont. The official state and national Lincoln Highway byway doesn’t include the 1913 route’s 43.8-mile jog south, west and north between Gothenburg and North Platte. Special brown “1913 Route” signs, bearing the Lincoln Highway’s red, white and blue “L” logo, mark the original “stairstep” route before the direct route linking both cities with Brady and Maxwell opened in 1916. If you’re game for the detour, take Nebraska Highway 47 south from Gothenburg and past Interstate 80. A large sign directs motorists to turn right onto Dawson County Road 764, which subsequently becomes Banner Road, Fort McPherson Road and East State Farm Road in Lincoln County. The Fort McPherson Road stretch runs past monuments to the 1850s Cottonwood Springs settlement and the original 1864-80 Fort McPherson, as well as present-day Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Lincoln County’s part of U.S. 30 also includes the spot just west of North Platte where the Lincoln Highway’s initial paving was completed on Nov. 5, 1935. Local and state dignitaries and Nebraska members of the Lincoln Highway Association cut the tape that day between Taft School and the Log Cabin. Both still stand, but the ribbon-cutting’s precise spot is unmarked.

RAIL DAYS

BY TODD VON KAMPEN todd.vonkampen@nptelegraph.com

Though 2020’s virtual North Platte Rail Days went well, Kirsten Parker says, there’s nothing like the real live thing. The annual celebration of North Platte’s 155-year railroad heritage returns in full Aug. 6-8, once more centered at the Golden Spike Tower & Visitor Center outside Bailey Yard. “We’re pretty excited about that, that’s for sure,” said Kirsten Parker, executive director of the eight-story tower overlooking the world’s largest rail classification yard. COVID-19 forced Rail Days organizers last August to switch to an all-online format, with the festival’s in-person Bailey tours replaced by virtual ones. The Spike recorded some 3,000 online visitors last Rail Days weekend, Parker said. “We got some great feedback and hopefully some interest in coming here (live) as well. “But we are more excited than ever to bring it back in person.” The 2021 event will follow whatever COVID-19 health and safety protocols the U.S. Centers for Disease Control has in place by August, Parker said. That also covers the in-person Bailey Yard bus tours, which will give first boarding priority to those who spend $25 to buy one of 250 VIP passes for the entire festival weekend. The bus tours otherwise will be unticketed and free, Parker said, but boarding of each bus will stop once it reaches whatever capacity CDC guidelines allow at that time. Spike officials are trying to figure out whether they can resume Rail Days’ annual picnic for U.P. employees, she said. They also don’t know whether the railroad might be ready to resume excursions by its vintage “Heritage Fleet” railcars or “Big Boy” No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive. Big Boy visited North Platte twice in 2019 after a multiyear restoration project. Railroad fans should monitor the Spike’s Facebook page or its goldenspiketower.com website for schedule updates, Parker said. VIP tickets may be bought on the website or at the tower.

off-the-wall goodies to commemorate your trip. When it comes to Western souvenirs, Fort Cody Trading Post has everything from cowboy gear to plush buffaloes, jackalope statues, toy animals and tons of clothing for all sizes and ages. The back portion of the Fort Cody building contains a small but impressive museum devoted to Buffalo Bill Cody. Its centerpiece is the spectacular Buffalo Bill’s Miniature Wild West Show, featuring over 20,000 figures painstakingly hand-carved in wood by Ernie and Virginia Palmquist. Many of the figures are animated — there’s a train that runs around the circus tents, and animated bucking broncos, sharpshooters and more. Recorded audio narration tells the story of Buffalo Bill, his traveling Wild West Show, and the creation of the miniatures. The show runs for about five minutes every 30 minutes. If you’re in town on a Thursday in the summer, don’t miss out on the live music in the stockade during the Fort Cody Summer Music Series. VINTAGE, ART AND HOPS

Feather River Vineyards Feather River Vineyards gets Buffalo Bill’s Buffalo of Approval for its quiet atmosphere, great wine and beautiful scenery. Located in the hills of the Southern Platte Valley, just south of North Platte, Feather River has been offering a variety of wines that reflect the character and history of the area’s geologic heritage since 2007. River and windblown sediment have created the mineral-rich soil of the region that nurtures vines that produce grapes of a distinctive quality. Feather River is one of Nebraska’s largest vineyards and planted their first vines in 2001. The 37-acre vineyard includes a bevy of grape varieties including Edelweiss, Seyval, Riesling, LaCrosse, St. Pipen, Marechal Foch, Frontanec, St. Croix, and Marquette. The Feather River Winery includes a tasting room with a veranda, production area, and lab. It is open for private parties and group tours. Tents are available for parties at the vineyard or amid the grapevines. All of that is enough to make even Buffalo Bill feel classy and sophisticated, so it’s no wonder that Feather River Vineyards gets Buffalo Bill’s Buffalo of Approval.

Wild West Memorial At the entrance to Cody Park, you’ll find the Wild West Memorial. The centerpiece of the exhibit is the larger – than – lifesized bronze statue of Buffalo Bill donated to the city of North Platte by the citizens of Great Britain. Surrounding the gazebo housing the statue are the flags of the states and foreign countries in which Cody performed with his Wild West Show. In 1882, the North Platte town fathers asked Buffalo Bill Cody to organize an Independence Day celebration to be held at what is now Cody Park. He named it the Old Glory Blowout, and it sparked the idea of the Wild West Show in his mind. He took the show on the road in 1883 and Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show took the world by storm. It took an army of entertainers to pull off Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show. These entertainers, the cowboys and Indians, trick riders and shooters, are honored here as well at the site of the precursor of the Wild West Show. Address: 1400 N. The dark canyons are creepy enough on their own at night, but add the echo of a chainsaw or a scream, and the scare level jumps to a whole new level.” The length of the trail is approximately a quarter of a mile.
