ROCKLAND | He was the mayor of Rock- land before he headed to Queen’s Park to become the long-running Liberal MPP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. Now Jean- Marc Lalonde is thinking about tossing his hat back in the municipal political ring. “I see myself running as a council candi- date in the next municipal election for Clar- ence-Rockland,” Lalonde said. The 78-year-old political veteran noted that right now the city is fractured between “the old guard” and “the new guard”, a situ- ation that has existed almost since the 2010 civic elections. Marcel Guibord took over as mayor against his main competition in the elec- tion, Pierre Charron. Richard Lalonde, the incumbent mayor at the time did not seek re-election. Jean-Marc Lalonde is the broth- er of the former mayor, but he doesn’t want to get involved in the whole “taking sides” situation should he succeed in his return to municipal politics bid. The former MPP wants to focus on youth and senior issues. During his early years in Rockland, Jean-Marc Lalonde became al- most the town’s face for youth sports with his minor hockey coaching duties along with running the local arena at the time. During his days as an MPP the needs of youth, including education, culture, and sports. He also developed a strong inter- est in seniors issues. One of his last projects before retiring from provincial politics was an effort to get a new seniors care facility for Rockland and, as a private citizen, he is still using all of his old government contacts now to continue pursuing that project. Should he still plan to seek a seat on coun- cil, Jean-Marc Lalonde expects to run for the Ward 1 seat now occupied by Coun. Michel Thivièrge, who may choose to step down from municipal politics next year. Lalonde has said he is not interested at this time in mounting a challenge for the mayor’s chair. Next year’s civic elections in Ontario are scheduled for the end of October. True Vote meeting The non-partisan True Vote Clarence- Rockland group will hold an information session at the Jardins Belle-Rive retirement complex, Nov. 25, 7 p.m., to explain the True Vote project to senior residents and any others attending.

ROCKLAND | L’ancien député provincial de Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, Jean-Marc Lalonde, souhaite louer l’aréna qui porte son nom à Rockland. M. Lalonde a récemment fait parvenir une lettre à la Cité de Clarence-Rockland afin de manifester son intérêt dans la location re- nouvelable d’une durée de deux ans. Voilà maintenant deux ans qu’il n’y a pas de patinoire à l’aréna Jean-Marc Lalonde. La municipalité avait décidé de ne pas rou- vrir cette glace puisqu’elle offrait déjà trois patinoires, dont deux à l’aréna de Clarence- Rockland et une à l’aréna de Clarence Creek.

«Je crois fermement au maintien des ac- tivités à l’aréna Jean-Marc Lalonde pour la communauté de Clarence-Rockland», a pré- cisé M. Lalonde dans sa lettre. Le but serait dès lors de réinstaurer une patinoire dans l’aréna. L’intention de M. Lalonde serait de louer l’aréna au coût an- nuel de 5000 dollars, du 1er août 2014 au 31 juillet 2016. La municipalité serait responsable des coûts d’entretien et des dépenses en im- mobilisation. La location devrait également comprendre la surfaceuse. «L’emplacement de l’aréna Jean-Marc Lalonde est favorable pour les écoles et ser- vices de garde de Rockland, permettant à

Donc, pour l’instant, le seul document qui est of- ficiel, c’est le document qu’on a reçu des Cadets de l’air.»
Une proposition sur le tard La proposition de Jean-Marc Lalonde pourrait bien être mise de côté puisque l’expression d’intérêt devait être reçue plus tôt. «[…]la date était quand même échouée, a précisé Thérèse Lefaivre, direc- trice des services communautaires. C’était au printemps que les gens devaient nous soumettre leur avis d’intérêt.» De fait, le seul avis d’intérêt reçu est celui de l’Escadron 832 Twillick Clarence-Rock- land des Cadets de l’aviation. Les personnes ou groupes intéressés devaient également soumettre une proposition détaillée pour

Le jour du Souvenir a été célébré partout à travers le monde lundi dernier. Au onzième jour de novembre, les gens sont appelés à avoir une pensée pour ceux et celles qui ont combattu et combattent encore aujourd’hui pour la paix. À Rockland, les gens ont bravé la pluie pour participer à la cérémonie, dimanche dernier. Des dignitaires ont déposé plusieurs cou- ronnes au cénotaphe qui se dresse devant
l’Hôtel de Ville. La fanfare de l’Escadron 832 Twillick des cadets de l’aviation de Clarence-Rockland a retenti sur place, le tout en présence également des membres des Chevaliers de Colomb de même que de la Légion royale canadienne. L’an prochain, on soulignera le centième anniversaire du début de la Première Guerre mondiale. Celle-ci a débuté le 28 juillet 1914.

They explained the significance of the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance Day, since its commemoration in the poem, “in Flanders Field” by Lt.-Col. Jam the rails in Rockland this weekend
of flurries, and it is the first major fundrais- ing event in the works for Phase 2 of the Rockland Skatepark Committee’s plans for the local recreational facility. East Swell Board Shop and the committee are hosting the event, which kicks off the rails at 1 p.m. For competitors, entry is $10 while spectators can watch for a donation of whatever amount of money they care to offer. Registration for the event is at the East Swell Board Shop on Laurier Street. There are two divisions for novice entrants and two divisions for advanced competition.

Preparing your car for winter
Cold weather and slippery roads are once again at the doorstep. That means it’s time to prepare your car for winter. These days, a lot of motorists don’t really think about basic maintenance and pre-winter prep because newer cars require less overall maintenance than they did a few golden years ago. But the reality is that car owners can do several things to get ready for the cold season. Changing over to winter tires is the most important move to make. They are adapted for cold pavement and icy conditions and increase road safety beyond measure. After the tires, it is important to change the wiper blades, even if they don’t seem to show any wear. Opting for special winter wiper blades is a great idea, as winter blades are designed to prevent ice build-up. Long before the first snowfall, all the engine fluids should be checked, starting with the windshield washer liquid. You don’t need a mechanic to do a simple job
like this one. If you don’t know where to find the spouts for the other engine fluids, look in your owner’s manual, located in the glove compartment. Incidentally, browsing through that little book could bring you some useful information on all kinds of things you can do to keep your car in top shape. Buy a set of special winter rubber mats for the interior. Protecting your car’s carpeting from melting snow and salt is another way of keeping the vehicle’s resale value. If your new car is equipped with block heating but you are not familiar with how it works, ask your mechanic to show you where the plug is. In fact, why not ask your mechanic to give your car a looking over before winter. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that everything’s okay just because you don’t hear any clunking or grinding! In the coldest season of the year, you want to be able to drive in com- plete confidence that everything’s working perfectly.

L’abc du «survoltage»
Many people like to carry a few specific tools in the trunk of their vehicles during winter, in case of roadside or weather-caused emergencies. Even if your vehicle is an all-wheel-drive SUV or a full-fledged four-wheel-drive truck, some tools can come really handy in extreme situations. Firstly, it is a good idea to keep a light shovel in the trunk. It can be a simple aluminum one, but if the car is small and doesn’t have much trunk space, hardware stores sell foldable plastic shovels that will do the job. Another great piece of equipment to keep in back of the car is a traction aid. These are devices that help motorists get unstuck from snowed-in or iced-in situations. Traction aids come in many shapes and sizes; some are made of tough plastic, others of steel material. They usually come in a small box with very simple assembly instructions.
Many drivers like to carry booster cables in their cars — especially older cars — in case the battery dies on a very cold day. It is best to buy high quality cables that come in a solid carrying case. Boosting a car is a specific technique that requires some knowledge. Fortunately, a good booster cable kit will come with clear instructions and a device that can help you identify the positive and negative poles. Getting them mixed up can cause damage to the car. If you travel a lot or drive to remote places, it would be a good idea to get a winter survival kit that includes a survival blanket, a candle, and a lighter. The last two items have been proven to provide a little bit of heat in a stalled car in winter. If you ever need to use either, make sure you open a window slightly to allow fresh air to circulate.

Are your winter tires still good?
Even if they are in good condition, older winter tires are lacking the lat- est technological advantages, unlike models currently on the market. Since your safety and that of your passengers is a priority, then it is better to exchange your old tires for newer models. According to Transport Canada, a winter tire in good condition has good “bite” in the snow because of the tread grooves, which are about 30 percent deeper than those of all-season tires. For a winter tire to be considered still usable, the tread depth should be at least 4.8 mm.
It is only all too tempting to try and stretch the life of a set of winter tires in order to save a bit of money. But the reality is that tire rubber has a “lifetime”, and with the passage of the seasons it dries out and cracks, which may result in loss of air pressure and compromise traction. Nowadays, transportation departments and tire industry experts consider tires aged more than seven years to be potentially dangerous. Of course, win- ter tires stored carefully in a cool, dark place can keep their good condition, but after seven years it is recommended to have them inspected by a tire specialist.

A simple way to measure the depth of a tread is to insert a Canadian quarter into the groove, with the head of the caribou pointing down. If the nose of the animal is hidden by the tire, it is still in good condi- tion. If the nose is visible, then it is time to change the tire.

A winter tire is a winter tire, right? Abso- lutely not! There are dozens of models on the market, so if you are looking for new winter
tires, consult a tire specialist about the most suitable type and tread for your vehicle and your driving style.
Factors to consider when buying winter tires include the make and model of your vehicle, the kind of mileage you put on
your car in the winter, the surface types of the roads you use most frequently, and whether you are doing rural, highway, or city driving. Be sure to choose tires whose dimensions correspond exactly to your vehicle. A tire vendor might suggest a slightly different but still appropriate size. If you own a vehicle that came with high performance all-season tires, it is a good idea to invest in the same level of performance quality for your winter tires. What about studded snow tires? In many jurisdictions they are forbidden entirely or limited to certain roads and regions during a specific period of time. A tire specialist ought to be able to tell you where and when these tires are allowed in your area and if they really meet your needs. Ideally, all four of your vehicle’s tires should be of identical make and tread so that they wear equally. At the very least, the tires in the best condition should be installed at the rear to ensure the stability of the vehicle, even if it is a front-wheel drive. Pour con- naître le bon type d’huile, il suffit de consulter le manuel du propriétaire ou de regarder sur le bouchon du réservoir d’huile à moteur. En cas de doute, n’hésitez pas à communiquer avec votre concessionnaire ou votre garagiste, car il est déconseillé de mélanger une huile syn- thétique avec une huile minérale puisqu’elles ne possèdent pas les mêmes propriétés. Pour déterminer la fréquence des changements d’huile pour votre véhicule, référez-vous aux recommandations du constructeur. Par temps froid, la facilité à démarrer un moteur ne dépend pas seulement de l’état de la batterie, du système d’allumage et de la qualité du carburant : la viscosité de l’huile importe également. Comme les huiles ont tendance à épaissir par temps froid, il est recommandé d’utiliser une huile qui demeure fluide à basse température. Une huile conçue spécifiquement pour l’hiver amé- liore les démarrages et diminue l’usure des pièces internes du moteur.
