A Step-By-Step Guide To Building A Corrugated Facility BY NICK O’HARE With sustainability driving customer demand for eco-friendly pa- per-based packaging and an industry-wide push to modernize oper- ations, expand portfolios, and explore new regions, corrugated com- panies are at a tipping point. As plants operate at maximum capacity and the need for additional space becomes undeniable, the decision to build or expand facilities is no longer a matter of choice but a necessity. If you're stepping into this venture, this step-by-step guide will serve as a roadmap to help you navigate the complexities of designing and building a corrugated manufacturing facility.

The transaction is expect- ed to close in April 2024. “Billerud believes that this decision is the best alternative for all stakeholders,” said Tor Lundqvist, Billerud’s Deputy President and Senior Vice President of Operations for North America. “The sale of the idled Wisconsin Rapids Mill and related assets represents a strategic decision to focus on core business objectives, optimize resources, and align with our long- term strategy to drive sustainable growth. “We look forward to finalizing the transac- tion in the near future and continuing to invest in the converting operation at the site.” The company reaffirmed its commitment to owning and operating the Wisconsin Rap- ids Converting Facility. Durst Launches Automated Solution For Digital Corrugated Printing Brixen, Italy based Durst Group, a leading manufacturer of digital printing and production technologies, announced the launch of the P5 350 HS PACK, a highly automated solution for digital corrugated and display printing. The P5 350 HS PACK combines the versatility of a P5 hybrid printing system with the ability to print on a wide range of materials used in the POP/POS and retail markets. “The modular design of the P5 technology platform enables us to develop new products for a wide range of applications. We identify market requirements and incor- porate them into our development process,” said Andrea Riccardi, Head of Product Management, Graphics at Durst. “The P5 350 HS PACK is another result of our custom- er-oriented approach and expands our P5 portfolio.” The P5 PACK series is equipped with a material guide and pressure rollers system designed to ease production. Automated corrugated edge holders help avoid collisions between the print heads and the substrates. The width and height are set automatically by selecting the media channel in the software, which reduces set-up time. In ad- dition, a powerful vacuum system increases the suction power on the print belt so that even heavy and warped corrugated boards can be flattened and printed cleanly. The P5 PACK series includes the sensor-controlled

Multitrack 6 function. Managed by six independent print- ing queues, this enables up to six corrugated boards to be printed in parallel by manual feeding. Starting with software for the print file creation, up to the finishing process, the automation of the production processes plays a major role.

The P5 Pack series can be equipped with the propri- etary Durst Workflow Rip/Color Management and Analyt- ics software. In this context, the P5 350 HS PACK can be combined with the Durst Automat MT. “With the Automat MT, we can map different levels of automation, ranging from 3/4 to full automation. This al- lows us to raise our customers’ productivity to a new level,” said Christian Harder, Vice President Sales at Durst Group. As part of the P5 PACK series, Durst is introducing a new ink set that is specially tailored to the requirements of display and packaging printing. The LUVERA LED ink is characterized by low odor and high abrasion resistance. The availability of the P5 PACK series is planned for Q3 2024. For more information, visit durst-group.com .

P+PB Develops Checklist To Help Consumers Adopt ‘Papertarian’ Lifestyle Helping consumers become papertarians is the goal of a new check list developed by the Paper and Packaging Board (P+PB). Papertarians are people who choose and use paper products because they know it is a smart choice for the environment and then recycle them to make further use of natural resources. In time for Earth Day 2024, the Papertarian Check List aims to help consumers build long-term, environmentally friendly habits. “Earth Day has helped people embrace a mindset about how we can and should protect our planet. We know that habit shifts happen over time. That’s why we want to take these Earth Day wins to the next level with great information and resources about paper since it comes from a renewable resource and is recyclable,” said Mary Anne Hansan, Presi- dent of P+PB. “Everyone can be a papertarian!”

The Papertarian Check List has tips showing how to work paper into all facets of everyday life — including shopping, working, living, and then recycling. A printable version is online and can be printed and posted as an easy reminder. Here are the ways: • Choose foods and drinks packaged in paper: paper egg cartons, pas- ta, ice cream, boxed/bagged dry goods, beverages in paper cartons • Choose personal care products packaged in paper: deodorant, cos- metics, first-aid items, soaps, and detergents • Opt for paper bags at checkout • Print emails and other key documents to lessen digital fatigue • Take notes on paper • Use paper for planning to help with retention: calendars, to-do lists • Live Papertarian • Have paper food containers on hand for leftovers when entertaining • Purchase (or make!) paper-based decor • Keep paper copies of important documents in case of emergency • Play paper-based family games • Choose paper-based gifts • Send thank-you notes and birthday cards • Recycle Papertarian • Empty, flatten, and recycle all paper packaging • Print your local recycling guidelines and post them near your bins • Ask your recycling center to update guidelines to include pizza boxes Currently, nearly 68 percent of recyclable paper materials are recy- cled. In addition to more jurisdictions and recycling facilities accepting CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

The deadline to submit your 2023 Innovation in Safety is April 5, 2024. The FBA’s Safety and Health Committee extends its guidelines to encompass critical areas like Rotary Die Cut- ter (RDC), Flexo Machine Guarding, Folder-Gluer Machine Guarding, and Conveyor Safety Recommendations. These recommended guidelines are available on the FBA web- site under the Recommendations section. We offer com- prehensive insights and best practices to enhance safety protocols across various manufacturing processes. These Recommendations come with Inventory and Corrective Action Plan (CAP) forms that you can use as is or change to meet your needs. All of these are available on our website. In addition to these initiatives, the FBA provides a range of safety guidelines covering various aspects of workplace safety, including Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT), Exposure Control Plans (Bloodborne Pathogens), and Personal Pro- tective Equipment (PPE). These guidelines are crucial for maintaining a safe work environment, preventing injuries, and complying with relevant regulations such as those set by OSHA. For instance, the Powered Industrial Truck Compliance recommendations outline training and evaluation require- ments for employees operating such trucks. Similarly, the Exposure Control Plan for Bloodborne Pathogens empha- sizes risk assessment, control methods, post-exposure evaluation, communication, and recordkeeping. CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

Cascades Celebrates 60th Anniversary Kingsey Falls, Québec based Cascades announced the celebration activities last week in recognition of its 60th anniversary which started with a big breakfast at Bistro sans frontière. A tour of the Kingsey Falls units was also planned during the day for brothers Alain and Laurent Le- maire, the co-founders, accompanied by Mario Plourde, President and CEO of Cascades. Celebrations to mark the milestone were also planned in the Company’s units throughout North America. “This day will be an opportunity to remember our his- tory, and to shine a light on the builders who came before us and created one of the most responsible companies in the world. Today, and throughout the year, we will proudly celebrate our successes together with our 10,000 Cascad- ers, with whom we will build the Cascades of tomorrow,” said Plourde. “Sixty years ago, my brothers moved to Kingsey Falls, a small village of just a few hundred inhabitants, to bring the old mill back to life. They had an idea that was daring for the time: to make cardboard from wastepaper. We invest- ed our entire lives, our family values, and our hearts into the pursuit of this larger-than-life dream. Today, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished. I’m grateful to all the gener- ations of Cascaders who have shared in our life’s work,” said Alain Lemaire, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of the Board at Cascades. Cascades also announced the donation of 116 hectares of ecologically valuable land to the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The land, a peat bog and wetland, was acquired by the Lemaire family in the early 1960s, and is located in St-Sylvère, Centre-du-Québec. The land is bequeathed to ensure its longevity and the survival of its species and ecosystems. To learn more, visit the Festivities section of the Cascades website at cascades.com .

Step 2: Assess Project Feasibility Assess the viability of your project on the chosen site. You’ll need to conduct a thorough analysis that examines aspects such as optimal site layout, estimated costs, ad- herence to regulatory requirements, and the existing market demand. Ultimately, the study will help determine whether proceeding with the facility's construction is via- ble, considering potential benefits and risks. • Analyze topography to determine grading and earth- work requirements. • Evaluate soil composition for foundation design and stability. • Consider traffic flow and access points to optimize ma- terial movement. • Identify potential challenges such as site limitations, environmental impact, or regulatory constraints. • Assess project budget and timeline based on site-spe- cific factors. Step 3: Design And Planning Collaborate with a design-builder to expedite and streamline the planning process, creating a comprehen- sive blueprint for your facility in collaboration with equip- ment vendors. This blueprint should emphasize optimal layout, strategic equipment placement, streamlined mate- rial flow, and robust safety protocols, serving as a crucial reference during construction. Ensure your design aligns with your budget, operational needs, and desired timeline. • Develop a detailed layout that optimizes workflow and minimizes material handling. In a box plant, this layout is often built around the location of the corrugator. • Map out space allocation for both roll storage and fin- ished product inventory, ensuring efficient handling and accessibility within the facility's layout. • Determine the necessary utility requirements to oper- ate the facility's equipment and systems effectively. En- sure that there is a proper supply of natural gas for your boiler, enough power for all equipment, and adequate water pressure & volume for equipment (both the cor- CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

rugator and converting lines). • Design an efficient electrical distribution system to min- imize energy losses and ensure reliable power supply. • Plan for drainage systems to support various facility processes. Depending on the municipality and poten- tially hazardous chemicals found in equipment waste (such as chemicals that could be found in ink from a ro- tary die cutter), consider implementation of a treatment system before discharging into the city’s line. • Consider the installation of compressed air lines if pneumatic equipment is used. • Integrate machinery and equipment placement for effi- cient production processes. • Arrange the piping layout for easy maintenance access and efficient material flow throughout the facility. • Consider the safety regulations, fire codes, and emer- gency egress routes. • Explore options for sustainable and energy-efficient design elements, such as lighting and insulation. • Involve equipment vendors early in the design process to ensure proper coordination and integration between their respective systems and general utilities (e.g., cor- rugator and steam/starch piping, converting equipment and water/sanitary piping, converting lines and dust system connections). • Integrate ventilation systems for proper air quality and circulation. • Plan for the integration of technology infrastructure, such as Wi-Fi, network cabling, and power outlets, in both the production area and office spaces. Step 4: Regulatory Compliance Ensure compliance with local authorities and industry regulations by navigating the necessary permits and ap- provals while ensuring your facility design aligns with all relevant codes and standards. • Ensure adherence to local building codes, zoning reg- ulations, and environmental standards. • Obtain permits for construction, utilities, and any spe- cialized equipment. • Work with regulatory agencies to address potential is- sues or concerns. • Engage experts to conduct necessary studies, such as environmental impact assessments. • Verify compliance with accessibility standards, includ- ing ramps, elevators, and other provisions as required. • Develop plans for waste management, hazardous ma- terial handling, and emergency response. • Comply with occupational health and safety regula- tions by implementing proper safety protocols. • Implement safety measures such as fire extinguishers, first aid stations, and safety signage. Step 5: Construction Manage construction by coordinating contractors, sup- pliers, and professionals to ensure smooth collaboration. CONTINUED ON PAGE 28
