Valoris inaugure son nouvel édifice d’Embrun

Le nouveau Centre de service Valoris pour enfants et adultes, à Embrun, a officiel- lement ouvert ses portes, le vendredi 25 novembre dernier. En effet, le nouvel édifice de 23 000 pieds carrés est situé stratégiquement dans l’ouest des Comtés unis. Il permettra à Valoris de mieux répondre aux besoins de ses bénéfi- ciaires. Le nouvel édifice, qui a coûté 4 M$ au gouvernement provincial, remplace l’ancien point de services de Casselman. Celui-ci est désormais fermé, mais les services de- meurent les mêmes : un service de soutien 24 heures par jour, sept jours par semaine. Le nouvel édifice constitue un guichet unique pour de nombreux programmes ainsi qu’une variété de services de soutien réunis sous un même toit : services de santé mentale pour enfants et familles, services de développement adulte et jeunesse, services de bien-être à l’enfance et services liés à la violence familiale. « L’emplacement où on était à Casselman était très, très petit. Les gens partageaient une portative qui avait été ajoutée et qui avait une durée de vie de deux ans et, si ma mémoire est bonne, ça faisait sept ans qu’on travail- lait de cette portative. Alors c’était vraiment rendu à un point ou ce n’était plus productif pour les services offerts », de dire Hélène Fournier, directrice générale de Valoris. Selon le député provincial Grant Crack, cet

Male identified Russell County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to thank the public for helping them identify the man soliciting parents of young children to attend his residence and utilize his woodworking equipment. On November 22, 2016, Russell County OPP issued a media release requesting assistance in identifying a man who approached a mother and her young children while at the Metro grocery store in Casselman. This man invited the woman and her children to his residence, where they could utilize woodworking equipment in his garage, and also offered to give her his phone number, all of which she declined. On Sunday, November 20, 2016, at 1 p.m., police were called to Dollorama in Embrun as an unknown man approached two separate families with young children, offered for the children to be dropped off at his residence to play in the woodworking shop in his garage, and then volunteered to provide his phone number. Both families declined the offer. The man has been identified and spoken to in regards to this matter and the investigation is closed with no criminal charges having been laid. Remembrance Day weekend impaired case A Navan man lost the use of his vehicle for a week after police charged him with impaired driving over the Nov. 11 weekend. Alex Plouffe, 25, of Navan, was charged with impaired driving and with driving with a blood-alcohol level exceeding 80 milligrams. The charges resulted from Russell County OPP investigation of a Nov. 12 call, late in the evening, about a traffic problem on Highway 417. Plouffe’s vehicle was impounded for seven days. He is scheduled for the Dec. 7 provincial court ses- sion in L’Orignal. A domestic incident call on Nov. 10 has resulted in the arrest of a 17-year-old girl from St-Isidore on a public mischief charge. Her name is withheld under the guidelines of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.A radar stopcheck on County Road 17, on Nov. 9, resulted in the arrest of an Alfred man. Christian Prévost Côté, 28, was arrested and charged with driving while his licence was suspended and also with speeding. He is scheduled for the Dec. 1 provincial court session in L’Orignal. The board of directors of the J. Urgel Forget Center in Embrun announced last week that it will be adding a new two-storey building of 21 units on its property. Guy Desjardins et d’autres honorés lors du Banquet du président Guy Desjardins, président des Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell (CUPR), a été honoré par ses collègues, sa famille et ses proches lors du Banquet annuel du président, qui s’est tenu le samedi 26 novembre dernier au River Rock Inn dans la Cité de Clarence- Rockland.
Près de 220 personnes se sont présentées afin de célébrer l’année de présidence de M. Desjardins, Parmi les gens présents, on re- trouvait notamment Francis Drouin, député fédéral de Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, Grant Crack, député provincial de Glengarry-Pres- cott-Russell, les membres du conseil des CUPR, plusieurs autres élus de la région de l’Est ontarien, ainsi que divers représentants de la communauté de Prescott et Russell. Cette année, le Prix JP St. Pierre – une distinction municipale qui vise à célébrer les contributions d’un individu des CUPR – a été conféré à Doug Anthony, un bénévole très engagé dans sa communauté, dans la municipalité de Russell. Grâce à ses efforts, plusieurs centaines de milliers de dollars ont été amassés pour diverses causes sociales et communautaires. Comme le veut également la tradition du Banquet du président, le Prix du président est remis lors de cette soirée afin de recon- naitre le travail acharné et la contribution exceptionnelle d’un employé municipal envers la communauté. Cette année, M. Desjardins a décidé de remettre le prix à Louis Prévost, directeur de l’urbanisme et la foresterie aux CUPR.

Mayor Gary Barton will need a bigger desk calendar next year. Besides being mayor of Champlain Township, Barton will also assume the duties of warden of counties council as mayor Guy Desjardins steps down from the post. It will be the second time for Barton as warden for the United Counties of Prescott- Russell (UCPR). Champlain Township’s mayor served a year’s term as warden for the counties in 2006. Right now he is pondering what some of his priorities will be as warden when he assumes the chain of office during next month’s inaugural session of counties council. “I’ve been thinking about that,” Barton said, during an interview following the end of the Nov. 23 UCPR session. “Obviously we need to finish getting the Highway 174 (situation) straightened out.” Barton referred to the past review of the future state of the connection between the City of Ottawa and the UCPR. Highway 174 from Orleans East to where it intersects at Canaan Road with County Road 17, out of the Town of Rockland, has been the focus of attention for many years. Both the federal and provincial governments have agreed that the connection needs upgrading to relieve traffic congestion and improve commuter traffic between the two municipal regions. A recent environmental assessment report on the 174/17 recommended four- laning the route from Rockland to the Trim Road intersection in Orleans, and expanding the existing four-lane section to six lanes between Trim Road and the Innes Road interchange. Barton also noted that finding a solution to the ambulance call problem that exists between the counties and the City of Ottawa will be another priority item for him as warden. The position of UCPR warden alternates each year between the mayors in Prescott County and the mayors in Russell County. the gavel over to Barton and enjoying a bit more free time on his own calendar. “It’s been a busy schedule,” Desjardins said during a break in the Wednesday night council review session of the Clarence- Rockland 2017 preliminary budget report. “But I have been enjoying the time I’ve had as warden.” One major highlight of the past year for Warden Desjardins is seeing both the federal and provincial governments reaffirm their support for upgrading the 174/17 link between Ottawa and Clarence-Rockland. “It’s a good achievement for me,” he said. Desjardins is also pleased with the results of the UCPR’s lobbying for more support from Queen’s Park, for independent seniors living in the region. He and other mayors on counties council reviewed a provincial government letter confirming $3 million to support seniors’ assisted living, either in residential retirement manors or subsidized housing. Desjardins noted that independent living for seniors is both cheaper and better in the long run than seeing them end up hospitalized in long-term care facilities. “We brought this to the provincial government’s attention,” Desjardins said.
New ways to connect with WDMH’s diabetes team November is Diabetes Month and the Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) diabetes team is here to support people living with dia- betes in our region. WDMH offers a variety of programs. The sessions are free of charge and patients can self-refer. Details about the diabetes education program can be found at www.wdmh.on.ca/diabetes. Meet the team, review session descriptions and read the diabetes newsletter. A brand-new feature is the diabetes calendar, which outlines when and where sessions will be held. Education sessions focus on everything from prevention of diabetes to living well with diabe- tes. Education is available on diet and exercise, weight control, and the use of insulin for blood sugar control. Physician referrals are not required to participate in the program. To register, call 613.774.2422, ext. 6765. “It is wonderful to be able to provide support to local residents,” notes Deirdre Cooke, a reg- istered dietitian and founder of the program. “Education is key in helping those with diabetes to live well and to stay as healthy as possible. Barton’s term of warden will also include the grassroots opposition to a proposed cement plant development for L’Orignal, and the legal wrangle, now, over the terms of the UCPR Official Plan which may or may not pave the way for a possible asphalt plant development in the Jessups Fall Escarpment area. “I will be supporting Barton during his time as warden,” Desjardins said, “just as he supported me.”

Victoria’s Quilts get help to deliver comfort

Grâce à l’encan silencieux ainsi que les ventes d’artisanat et les dons reçus au courant de la foire d’artisanat à Embrun, le week-end dernier, quelque 7723 $ ont été récoltés pour aider les Amies de Victoria’s Quilts de Russell à mener à bien leur mission. Although mostly working behind the scenes, Victoria’s Quilts (VQ) Friends Group Russell are very involved within the community and their commitment and dedication are contagious. Through the silent auction held at the Embrun Craft Fair, as well as crafts sales and donations received, the community had a chance to give back as the Russell Friends raised $7723 to help VQ carry out their mission. By providing quilts, the VQ Friends group hope to bring both physical and spiritual comfort to those dealing with cancer. As they do not have any paid staff, they rely solely on the generosity of donors and volunteers. Generous contributions were made by Embrun’s Knights of Columbus, among oth- ers, as well as many contributors donating and bidding in the silent auction. To top it all off, Russell Scotiabank had promised to match the amount raised. “Thanks to Sylvain Duperron and Pa- trice Guernon which decided to support our cause this year with the Embrun Craft Fair. We are very grateful for the generous donations, it’s wonderful!” said Marie-Claire Ivanski, public relations coordinator for Rus- sell Friends of Victoria’s Quilts. She is also
very proud of her VQ Friends Group Russell and their constant dedication. “We cannot take away the pain or the diagnosis, but we can give our support and seeing the reactions of the recipients is what keeps us going,” she added. “We would like to express our gratitude also on behalf of the recipients of the quilts.” Anne Mains, coordinator of the Russell Group, has herself dealt with cancer and knows the feeling all to well. “As soon as you get that diagnosis, your world falls apart. I’ve
had cancer twice now. We comfort people with quilts showing them that they are not alone in their struggle.” What started as a stitch and praise group back in 2008 has now become 25 to 30 ac- tive members working together, creating and delivering quilts to cancer patients in the region. Anyone can fill out a request online via the Victoria’s Quilts Canada website, as soon as someone gets diagnosed. “You don’t have to be undergoing chemo, added Mains. In order to request a quilt, all you do is fill in your name and the recipient’s name. If in- terested, a color or a theme may even be requested,” concluded Mains.

Du 25 novembre au 6 décembre se déroulent les 12 Journées d’action contre la violence faite aux femmes. Le point de départ de cet évè- nement souligné au Québec et au Canada correspond à la Journée internationale pour l’élimination de la violence à l’égard des femmes (décrétée par l’Organisation des Nations Unies) et sa finale coïncide avec la Journée nationale de commémoration et d’action contre la violence faite aux femmes (instituée par le Parlement du Canada). Cette année, les Journées d’action visent principalement à mettre en lumière les formes de violences moins connues (ou visibles) et à accroître la compréhension de ce que sont les violences sexistes, le tout dans une perspective intersection- nelle.
