Accurate Box Celebrates 25 Years As Women-Owned Biz Paterson, New Jersey based Accurate Box Company is celebrating a big milestone this year with its 25th anniversary as a certified women-owned business. In 1997, Lisa Hirsh became the CEO/President and majority own- er of Accurate Box. Following in 1998, the com- pany became certified as a women-owned business through a third-party certifier. It is now certified through the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the na- tion’s leading third-party certifier of business- es owned and operated by women. Celebrating 25 years as a women-owned company is a huge achievement for a pack- aging manufacturer since there are very few women as leaders in the packaging industry. Lisa remembers, “When I started in the busi- ness, there were hardly any women. I would go to organizational meetings, and I’d be the only woman out of 200 people in the room.” She has seen Accurate Box, along with the packaging industry, change a lot over the years, and she is happy to see there are more women in the industry now. Lisa’s grandfather, Henry Hirsh, founded Accurate Box in 1944. Charlie Hirsh, Henry’s

In 1976, as America celebrated its bicentennial, a 35-year industry vet- eran in corporate engineering and machinery sales named Thomas Haire launched Haire Group as a provider of pre-owned corrugated

converting machinery. Just a few months later, Doug Muller joined the company as its first salesman. Today, the company is owned by indus- try (and company) veterans Jeff Quinn and Keith Umlauf. Quinn began with the company as a summer intern in 1983, and Umlauf joined in 1989, working in sales/procurement for pre-owned machines. In March of 2020, they brought Mike Mulroe on board as President of the company. A healthcare industry veteran who worked as a VP of Operations for one of the nation’s top hospitals, Mulroe as- suming the new position allowed him and his management team to run the day-to-day operations of the business while freeing Quinn and Umlauf to work “on” the company instead of working “in” the company. Haire, while having long ago earned its reputation as a seller of pre- owned machinery, has ventured into new equipment sales, as well, and is currently enjoying a long period of sustained growth. As such, has turned its attention toward ways in which it can continue to grow while also retaining its core values. Customers Always A Priority The company vision is to build a new building that will house new CONTINUED ON PAGE 26 The drivers of Haire Group’s remarkable growth: from left, Mike Mulroe, President, and co-owners Keith Umlauf and Jeff Quinn.

Initially, Lisa thought Accurate Box would just be a stepping stone for her, and after a year, she would move on to another career. Although, once she started, she found it “interesting, engaging, and challenging, and working with my dad was one of the biggest highlights.” She ended up staying at Accurate Box, and her hus- band, Mark Schlossman, also joined the company. They still work alongside each other, with Mark now being the Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Together they have grown the company’s sales by 500 percent since Lisa took over the business. With taking a bigger role at Accurate Box, Charlie became Lisa’s biggest inspiration and role model. Lisa worked alongside her father for 15 years before transition- ing into the role of CEO/President and has accomplished a lot during her time in charge. Along with running Accurate Box, Lisa sits on the board of the Fibre Box Association and New Jersey Manufacturers, where she also chairs the Investment Committee. Accurate Box continues to grow under Lisa’s leadership and remains committed to the quality of its packaging and the needs of its customers. Now coming to the latter half of her career, Lisa is “focused on teaching the next gener- ation so they get the knowledge they need in the next few years to step up and take the reins.” This includes her own daughter, Samara Ronkowitz, who is the fourth-generation and next woman to take over Accurate Box. Accurate Box is proud it will remain a family-owned and women-owned company and is looking forward to celebrating more mile- stones in the future. Volk Packaging Corp. Drops ‘Let Us Paxit’ Podcast Episode

Box Shipments ( U.S. Corrugated Product Shipments) Industry Shipments In Billions of Square Feet Month December 2022

Sanford, Maine based Volk Paxit, a spin-off of the Volk Packaging Corporation, announced the latest episode on their “Let Us Paxit” podcast featuring owner, Derek Volk. Volk, who started Volk Paxit in 2021 with his wife, Amy, shares an introduction to the contract packaging company whose mission was to help make customers’ lives easier during the Covid-19 pandemic. At that time, VPC was con- tracted to repackage a critical medical supply. Seeing a need in the marketplace, the new company began part- nering on other repackaging, prepackaging, kitting and fulfillment services to help businesses struggling with la- bor and logistics challenges. A year later, Volk Paxit relocated from Biddeford to a large warehouse in Sanford, which provides ample, new- ly renovated space for securing, processing, and ship- ping valuable customer inventory. The company says it has invested in technologies to seamlessly integrate with e-commerce platforms and has a staff of around 20 full- time workers. As of March 2022, the Volk Paxit team has repackaged and shipped over 75 million medical components and is actively engaged in helping many other companies avoid labor and logistics crises. The presentation is just short of 10 minutes and is available on Spotify and Apple.

NAM: Manufacturing Employment Drops In February And March After experiencing solid growth over the past couple of years, manufacturing employment rose in January to 12,985,000 workers, the highest level since November 2008, according to Chad Moutray, Ph.D. and Chief Econ- omist at the National Asociation of Manufacturers (NAM). Since then, manufacturing employment edged down by 1,000 workers in both February and March. The March total of 12,983,000 remained just shy of the more than 14- year high, but with hiring clearly showing signs of stalling. At the same time, the overall labor market remained solid, even with some weaknesses. The unemployment rate edged down from 3.6 percent in February to 3.5 percent in March, continuing to hover around “full employment” levels and just a tick away from

January’s 3.4 percent reading, which was the lowest level since May 1969. The manufacturing sector reported 3,775,000 female employees in March, or 29.1 percent of its total employ- ment. Female employment in manufacturing has risen by 107,000 workers since February 2020, or a gain of 2.9 per- cent. In contrast, male employment in the sector increased by 91,000, or a gain of 1.0 percent, over that time frame. The latest JOLTS report recorded 694,000 manufactur- ing job openings in February, the lowest level in two years, although figures remained elevated. At the same time, nonfarm business job openings dropped to 9,931,000 in February, the first reading below 10 million since May 2021. The 5,936,000 unemployed Americans reported in February translated into 59.8 unemployed workers for every 100 job openings in the U.S. economy, with signifi- cantly more job openings than people actively looking for work, even as that ratio has narrowed notably in the past two months.

Manufacturers remained challenged for the fifth straight month, with the ISM Man- ufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index falling to 46.3 in March, the lowest reading since May 2020. New orders contracted for the seventh consecutive month, with no- table weaknesses in demand cited in the sample comments. In the ISM® report, raw material prices have declined in five of the past six months, a sign that input costs have continued to moderate. In addition, lead times have con- tinued to narrow, reflecting progress on supply chain challenges. New orders for manufactured goods dropped 0.7 percent in February, and ex- cluding transportation equipment, factory orders decreased 0.3 percent in February. Overall, new manufactured goods orders have decreased 3.2 percent since peak- ing in June 2022 but rose 2.7 percent on a year-over-year basis. New orders for core capital goods inched down 0.1 percent to $75.07 billion in February. This result was not far from Au- gust’s record ($75.38 billion). Core capital goods orders have risen 4.2 percent year- over-year, but they have declined 0.4 per- cent since the August peak. Private manufacturing construction rose 2.7 percent to a record $140.32 billion at the annual rate in February. Private con- struction in the sector has trended strongly higher since bottoming out at $72.46 billion in February 2021. Over the past 12 months, activity has soared 53.8 percent. As such, these data continued to speak to the resil- ience of the manufacturing sector.

Tavo Packaging Founder Hal Taylor, Friend To All, Leaves Lasting Legacy

Halfred “Hal” E. Taylor of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, passed away peace- fully on March 28th at home. He was 87 and the devoted husband for more than 56 years of marriage to Judith Ann Taylor until her passing in 2017. Born in Pendleton, Indiana, he was the third of four children of Frederick and Eloise Taylor (Hardy). Growing up, Hal played basketball, was a life-

guard and ultimately ran the lo- cal swimming pool. He earned a marketing degree from Indi- ana University in Bloomington, Indiana, after which he served in Germany with the Army. After settling in Doylestown

in 1968, he coached DAA basketball and umpired little league baseball. Hal was an usher at church. He enjoyed woodworking, building the first Pinewood Derby track for our Cub Scout Pack, Hope Chests, jewelry boxes and a poker ta- ble. Hal and Judy played cou- ples bridge in church groups and with friends they met along the way. Hal drove the neigh- borhood on his tractor or in his golf cart every flag holiday, placing a small American Flag on every mailbox (in a holder he made). He loved his bird feeders, buying all kinds, designing elaborate and complicated feeder stands to draw as many varieties as possible. He also enjoyed, maybe even more than watching the birds, battling the squirrels to keep them out of the feeders. He loved vegetable gardening. It seemed like there was always an endless supply of tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, or whatever he was growing. He made a point of personally delivering that day’s harvest to friends and family. Hal played tennis. From tennis, he made great, long-lasting friendships. When tennis wasn’t an option any longer for physical reasons, those friends became breakfast and poker friends. Watching Indiana Hoosier basketball, whether in person or on TV, was a constant. In 1978, Hal founded his own company, Tavo Packaging, Inc. which con- tinues to this day, producing folding cartons for a wide variety of customers. Tavo was his crowning achievement, his pride and joy. Even as he slowed down, he continued to go to “work” as often as possible. It was the high- light of his week. He cared as much about the employees as he did about the work. When Hal arrived on the plant floor, everyone’s day brightened. He loved Tavo and its employees, and he was loved by all. Whether you were a college friend, church friend, tennis friend, a bridge friend, a neigh- borhood friend, or a work friend, ultimately you were his friend. Hal is survived by his sons, Jeffrey (Cindy) and David (Kathleen) and grandfather of five Stuart, Katherine (Gregg), Molly, Grace, and Kevin, as well as sister, Anne Taylor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Hal’s name may be made to The Michener Art Museum — www.michenerartmuseum.org/join-sup- port/giving-opportunities/ or to the ALS Association of Greater Philadel- phia — https://secure.alsphiladelphia.org/ . Independent 2’s capabilities include designing, manufacturing, warehousing, and de- livering corrugated and packaging that protects products in-transit and sold on store shelves. “Digital printing has not only changed the way we look at our business, but it has actually opened up some other opportunities that would not have been available before,” said Steve Jones, Vice President of Consumer Sales at Rev-A-Shelf. “If you were to ask me if I could go back to traditional printing methods, the answer would absolutely be no. “Traditional printing methods usually only catered to our larger customers that had the ability to run large print runs. Well now, digital printing is not only going to benefit our larger customers, it’s also going to benefit our smaller customers who didn’t have the ability to have large print runs in the past. Lower lead times, lower print runs, and changing artwork are the three keys that will make us suc- cessful and make our brand available to everyone.” Domino is a leading manufacturer and distributor of digital printing and product identification solutions and is also celebrating an anniversary with 45 years in business. Domino is a global organization with world headquarters in the UK, and North America headquarters in Gurnee, Illi- nois. It employs over 3,000 employees worldwide.

As Louisville, Kentucky based Rev-A-Shelf began its 40th year in business, it recognized some of the packaging im- provements they have embraced over the years and the

partnerships that have helped them improve their brand as well as customer service. FSEA Releases Presentation On Recyclability Of Metallics On Paper The Foil & Specialty Effects Association (FSEA) announced the release of a presentation on the “Repulpability/Recy- clability of Metallic Transfer Decorating on Paper/Board.” Based on laboratory studies and tests commissioned by FSEA and other leaders in the print finishing industry, the presentation communicates pertinent and accurate

tallic transfer foils to provide education on the process. The presentation then offers information on the negligible amounts of aluminum contained in metallic transfer foils. It includes details on the measurement of the aluminum and examples of how little aluminum is in the construction of metallic transfer foils. The presentation also discusses the recent study com- missioned by FSEA on the Repulpability of Foil Decorated Paper/Board. It provides information on how the study was conducted and the results, which includes details confirm- ing that it is feasible to repulp paper that includes metallic transfer foil as it is done in common recycling settings. The presentation includes details on a separate study conducted by Western Michigan University on cold foil transfer that discusses the scope of the study and details the conclusion that cold foil transfer samples submitted for the study were 100 percent repulpable and recyclable. For more information on the presentation, as well as a copy of the Repulpability of Foil Decorated Paper/Board study, Western Michigan Cold Foil Transfer study and the negligible amount of aluminum in metallic transfer foils, contact Jeff Peterson at FSEA: jeff@fsea.com. Haire’s Vision (CONT’D FROM PAGE 1)

Weathering The Covid Storm World markets were left in chaos by the Covid pandem- ic, but Haire weathered the storm because it had such a long-standing reputation at its disposal. “We’re so in tune with our customers and the market that we can anticipate their needs,” said Quinn. “We’ve been around for a very long time, and we’ve built great relationships, so during Covid, we were able to use our industry experience to hypothesize what was going to happen as the pandemic passed. We’ve always been a forward-thinking group at Haire. Because of our close re- lationships with our customers and our focus on the cor- rugated market, we were able to stay ahead of the curve, and we’re not at the mercy of anything going on in the world outside of our control.” The Apstar Difference “In 2005, when we started selling Apstar machinery, which includes die cutters and flexo folder gluers, we made the decision to purchase an Apstar and put it on the floor,” said Quinn. “And we’re proud to say that we’ve had an Apstar rotary die cutter on the Haire’ floor, under pow- er, for 17 years. We’re changing those machines out every year or so. We will always have an Apstar here running on the floor to support our customers, both from a training point of view, bringing people in and showing them the machinery and the training of crews.” “And if people put their hands on these machines,” said

offices, an expanded parts area, a new Machinery Show- room and expanded Technical Training Center. Haire Group has already invested more than $5 plus million dol- lars in machinery for the training center, and in a time of unprecedented challenges to the supply chain, the com- pany thought it prudent to invest another $7 million in in- ventory so that customers were never in a position of hav- ing to wait to have their orders met. “We are actively moving pieces in place so that we are never the reason for an install being held up,” said Umlauf. “A company may have to wait on their prefeeder or stack- ers to get the project scheduled, but they won’t be wait- ing on us. In this time of turbulence when companies can’t project or put a target date on when they can do an install, we are not going to be the reason for the delay because we have all the pieces in place here.” “Every time we get a demo machine, half the time it’s sold before it even hits the floor,” added Quinn. “The minute we have one, they’re gone. Two of the machines currently on the floor here have already been sold. So once one of the machines is shipped to a customer, we already have its replacement here. And as with everything, the customer comes first. It is important that we have ma- chines here for training and sales purposes, but if our cus- tomer demonstrates a need for one of the machines, then getting it out to them is our first priority.”

Umlauf, “They are much more likely to want it installed in their plant. It’s one of the reasons we still bring machinery to trade shows, despite the huge cost. We’ve had custom- ers thank us for bringing machines to shows because they have their engineering staff with them and they can spend time looking it over.” “As our product lines expand, we also need to expand,” said Quinn. “We’re in the planning stages of adding on to our building so we can expand the new machinery show- room to accommodate five or six different machines. We need room to accommodate our Encore line of machinery.

The future building will house a newly expanded train- ing facility, new offices, an expanded parts area, and an even larger, state-of-the-art new machinery showroom and technical center. “As we grow, we need to continue to keep the same Haire customer experience for both our customers and the employees,” said Quinn. “Growth will never outpace our ability to deliver the fantastic customer service that we do.” A New Level Of Growth Founder Tom Haire had the foresight to envision a day when expanding the company’s footprint would be nec- essary. There had already been two expansions since the original building was christened, and the company has ap- proximately eight acres at its disposal for its new building. Part of the company’s goal of growth was the reason for bringing Mike Mulroe on board. “Haire had grown to the point that we felt like it was important to bring on a president that can focus on taking the company to an even greater level,” said Umlauf. “We took our time searching for the right person to fill the position. Not only were we looking for someone with expertise to run the company, but we also knew that this person would need to lead with a people-first philosophy and that he would have to main- tain the customer focus that makes Haire who we are.” “From my standpoint, it was important to acknowledge that I wasn’t ‘fixing’ anything,” Mulroe said. “Nothing at the company was broken. In fact, it was opposite. The com- An Apstar Rotary Die Cutter has been on Haire’s showroom floor, under power, for 17 years.

things like cost controls, accounting, and job costing.” “We moved Haire from a lifestyle business to a perfor- mance-based business,” Mulroe said. “Jeff, Keith, Doug [Muller], and Herb [Passo]were entrepreneurs, growing the business and really focusing on customers and client rela- tionships. I wanted to focus on other quantifiable things, analytics and accounting and that sort of thing. So now we’re really focused on what the metrics are. Each area has specific goals that they’re trying to achieve through- out the course of the year, and all that relates to quality of performance and, ultimately, customer satisfaction. So by framing the business in a way that is very focused, we can put energy into certain things that are really important

to us. Then the metrics associated with those things can be measured, and the management team can talk through those challenges, issues, and potential problems. But the context is always getting better and driving improvement. We’re always trying to improve and bring that mentality to the organization to push it forward. 100 Percent Transparency As one example, Haire has recently added the new po- sition of Client Services Manager.
