Outdoor cat activity

Spring has arrived and with more people getting outside in their yards, Gloucester County Animal Control would like to remind the community about its Nuisance Ordinance and what assistance the office can provide for cats in our community. Under Virginia law, a person is considered the "owner" or "custodian" of an animal if they provide care, shelter, food, water, or have taken responsibility for the animal's well-being. Regularly feeding a community cat may establish ownership. Once ownership is established, the individual must follow all state animal care laws including providing things such as adequate food, water, shelter, and veterinary care.

Animal control can educate residents on how to discourage unwanted cat activity. Simple steps such as securing trash bins, avoiding leaving pet food outdoors, and using humane deterrents in gardens can significantly reduce nuisance behaviors. Animal Control should be contacted if a cat is injured or visibly ill, suspected of cruelty or neglect, or if you need guidance about legal responsibilities and caretaking. As a reminder, the Gloucester County Animal Control shelter does not currently have housing for cats. The county emphasizes that nuisance cats cannot be harmed or relocated unlawfully and must be handled in accordance with animal welfare laws.
