Outdoor cat activity
Spring has arrived and with more people getting outside in their yards, Gloucester County Animal Control would like to remind the community about its Nuisance Ordinance and what assistance the office can provide for cats in our community. Under Virginia law, a person is considered the "owner" or "custodian" of an animal if they provide care, shelter, food, water, or have taken responsibility for the animal's well-being. Regularly feeding a community cat may establish ownership. Once ownership is established, the individual must follow all state animal care laws including providing things such as adequate food, water, shelter, and veterinary care.
Animal control can educate residents on how to discourage unwanted cat activity. Simple steps such as securing trash bins, avoiding leaving pet food outdoors, and using humane deterrents in gardens can significantly reduce nuisance behaviors. Animal Control should be contacted if a cat is injured or visibly ill, suspected of cruelty or neglect, or if you need guidance about legal responsibilities and caretaking. As a reminder, the Gloucester County Animal Control shelter does not currently have housing for cats. The county emphasizes that nuisance cats cannot be harmed or relocated unlawfully and must be handled in accordance with animal welfare laws.

Mosquito management for summertime
Tips for residents:
Remove any type of container that will hold water, like flowerpots, old tires, bird baths, buckets, etc. It only takes a teaspoon of water to become a mosquito larvae hatchery! Mosquitoes love resting in overgrown shrubbery and tall grasses. Trimming your shrubs and cutting your lawn encourages mosquitoes to rest elsewhere.
Community Emergency Response Team
Are you prepared for an emergency? Do you want to help your Gloucester, Mathews and Middlesex community if one arises? The Community Emergency Response Team, CERT, is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations, where citizens may initially be on their own. While people will respond to others in need without the training, one goal of the CERT program is to help them do so efficiently, without placing themselves in unnecessary danger. Your CERT is a group of community volunteers that get trained to manage utilities and put out small fires, provide Basic First Aid, search an area safely, help at local events and more! CERT members are not first responders, but they offer support in our communities. The training is free. Email jwenner@gloucesterva.info or call 804- 693-1390 for more information.

Charting Our Future: Working together to guide Gloucester towards its 400th year.
Gloucester’s Planning, Zoning, and Environmental Programs team recently connected with residents and visitors at the Daffodil Festival as part of the County’s Comprehensive Plan update. They asked a simple but important question: What do you love about Gloucester, and what concerns you about its future? Everyone who participated was entered into a raffle for a gift basket, and our very own Lt. Jason Klink (pictured to the right) was the winner. Congratulations, Lt. Klink! The Comprehensive Plan serves as a roadmap for the next 20 years, guiding decisions about growth, land use, transportation, housing, natural resources, and other factors that shape our community’s quality of life and cost of living.
We are currently in the first phase of the update: listening. Below is a snapshot of what we heard. Do you agree?
There will be many more opportunities to get involved in the months ahead, including focus groups, surveys, listening sessions, committees, and more.
Your voice matters. Help shape Gloucester’s next chapter.

School News
A note on the following letter:
This message was first sent to Gloucester County Public School teachers and staff as they looked forward to spring break, but we are too proud not to also share it with our community!
From Superintendent Anthony Vladu, Ed.D. Dear GCPS teachers and staff, Last year, we set a high standard. We’re focused on meeting it again, and continuing our mission to build a bright future for our students and community.
This year, we have built on last year’s remarkable achievements and continued to gain momentum. Your focus and commitment make this sustained excellence possible. Last year, our schools were ranked first in Region III and, for the first time, surpassed West Point in state academic rankings. Botetourt received Blue Ribbon recognition, and our elementary schools demonstrated notable consistency, with all schools scoring within two points of each other on the revised framework. Each school across the division contributed to these accomplishments. Abingdon led the region in science, while Petsworth attained the highest overall academic performance among more than 60 elementary schools. Achilles ranked among the top five in science mastery, and Bethel placed in the top five for both reading and mathematics. Page was recognized as a top-five middle school in Region III, and Peasley earned top-five rankings in reading, mathematics, and science. Gloucester High School achieved its highest-ever graduation rate, earned distinguished ratings, and celebrated state championships in field hockey and wrestling. celebrated state champtionships in field hockey and wrestling.
These results reflect more than scores or rankings. They show our students’ growth and readiness for the future, and the positive impact on our community. These outcomes are possible because of your daily dedication and meaningful work in the classroom.
These accomplishments are a testament to your teamwork. Education is demanding, but the true reward is seeing our students succeed.
Every GCPS employee is part of a team that succeeds together. Thank you for advancing public education in Gloucester.
Teachers and staff, you are this community’s superstars. These are not just words, they are facts supported by objective data and the thousands of lives you are improving every day.
As spring break approaches, I encourage you to rest and recharge. When we return, let’s stay focused on student safety, well-being and engaging instruction.
I wish you and your family a safe, restful and joyful break.
Anthony Vladu, Ed.D. Division Superintendent
