TOWN LOOKS AT FOUR-DAY WORK WEEK IDEA a four-day work week for its municipal employees.

The pandemic spurred the town’s administration to explore the idea of a four-day week as one of several options for adapting to the changing labour force conditions. «Broadly, the COVID-19 forced the admi- nistration to rethink working conditions for the employees» stated Longtin, in her report. «Since June 2020, we have experienced the Great Resignation.» She cited a Dictionary.com reference explaining the term. The Great Resignation refers to «the widespread trend of a signi- ficant number of workers leaving their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic.» Longtin noted that many businesses expe- rimented with four-day work weeks to avoid the Great Resignation problem. The concept of the four-day work week involves reducing the number of work days for employees and without also increasing the numbers of hours during their new working day schedule. The goal was to encourage staff to be more efficient and productive during their new, shorter work week in return for having a three-day weekend. The report also noted that several Onta- rio municipalities are experimenting with a compressed work week setup. This also involves a four-day work week but with the work days extended by an hour. Results of the compressed work week have been positive for these municipalities. There was less staff turnover and the municipalities had greater success in recruiting new employees for some positions. If Hawkesbury decided to try a four-day compressed work week pilot project for its staff, it would mean that the municipal ofice would be open to the public until 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. All employees would be assigned to either a Monday to Thursday work week shift, or to a Tuesday to Friday work week shift to ensure municipal busi- ness and work programs continued on a

normal basis. Longtin and Chief Administrator Samuel Cardarelli both told council that consultation with all employees would happen first before an actual proposal was made for a four-day compressed work week pilot project. They emphasized that participation in such a pilot project would be voluntary. There would also be a staff survey for feedback and comments at the end of the pilot project to help determine if there was support among employees for making a compressed four- day work week permanent for municipal operations. Council members expressed interest in the concept of a four-day work week. But they noted that such a pilot project experiment is neither feasible nor suitable this year when there will be a municipal election in October. Depuis des années, le bureau municipal de Hawkesbury est l’endroit où se rendre pour obtenir une licence de mariage. Main- tenant, il peut être l’endroit où les couples se rendent pour leur mariage. Dans le cadre de l’une des dernières affaires avant la pause estivale, le conseil municipal de Hawkesbury a approuvé à l’unanimité, lors de sa séance du 27 juin, une recommandation de règlement visant à autoriser le greffier municipal ou l’un des greffiers adjoints à célébrer un mariage civil au bureau municipal. Le règlement répond à toutes les conditions requises par la Loi sur le mariage de l’Ontario pour une cérémonie de mariage civil à l’hôtel de ville. Dans un rapport d’administration pré- senté au conseil, il est indiqué que le bureau municipal reçoit souvent des demandes de renseignements sur les services de mariage civil à l’hôtel de ville. Beaucoup d’appels pro- viennent de couples du Québec qui veulent que leur mariage officiel ait lieu en Ontario et qu’ils aient ensuite une cérémonie non officielle dans leur province d’origine. «Le bureau de la ville a également consta- té une forte augmentation des demandes de licences de mariage en 2022, dique le rapport, en partie en raison du fait que de nombreuses personnes ont dû reporter leur mariage en raison de la pandémie de COVID-19.» De plus, depuis le 1er juin de cette année, le gouvernement du Québec a cessé de délivrer des certificats de mariage en anglais,

dans le cadre des nouvelles directives linguistiques du projet de loi 96. Toute per- sonne au Québec qui veut ou a besoin d’un certificat de mariage en anglais doit aller à l’extérieur de la province pour en obtenir un, ce qui signifie qu’elle doit également obtenir un service officiel de mariage civil en Ontario ou dans une autre province. Cela a contribué à l’augmentation des appels au bureau municipal de Hawkesbury concernant les services de mariage. Le nouveau règlement autorise le greffier municipal ou l’un des greffiers adjoints à célébrer le mariage civil. Le couple peut avoir trois personnes qui assistent à l’événement au bureau municipal, et deux de leurs invités servent de témoins officiels. Pour l’instant, il est prévu d’autoriser les services de mariage civil au bureau muni- cipal un jour par semaine, avec une limite de deux services ce jour-là. Le coût de ce service sera de 350 $. Si le couple n’est pas en mesure de fournir les deux témoins requis pour le service, les employés de la Ville qui sont disponibles peuvent servir de témoins, moyennant des frais supplémentaires. Le Groupe automobile Laplante, pro- priété de Jacques Laplante et géré par ses trois enfants, est en activité depuis 1954. L’entreprise familiale de trois générations était propriétaire des concessionnaires Buick, GMC, Chevrolet et Cadillac de la rue Main à Hawkesbury jusqu’au 13 juin, date à laquelle tout a été vendu à Maxime Allard de Ste-Marie Automobiles Ltée de Saint-Rémi, Québec, ainsi que son centre de collision Carstar. « Je suis maintenant à la retraite. J’ai 71 ans, alors les enfants vont se concentrer sur les autres emplacements, a déclaré Jacques Laplante, président du Groupe automobile Laplante. » M. Laplante n’hésite pas à remercier Hawkesbury et les communautés environ- nantes, soulignant l’accueil chaleureux qui leur a été réservé lorsqu’ils ont ouvert leur concession en 2013. BACK ON THE WATER AGAIN: AP KAYAK & CANOE RACE

One of the highlights for Canada Day this year in Alfred-Plantagenet Township is the return of the popular Kayak & Canoe Race. “Everybody was happy,” said Dominic Côté, one of the organizers of the event. The Alfred-Plantagenet Fire Department Kayak & Canoe Race was a welcome addition to Canada Day events when the fire depart- ment launched the project several years ago. The pandemic put the event into dry dock for the past two years. The relaxing of COVID-19 restrictions on social gatherings has allowed the event to cast off again. Last Friday morning on Canada Day 40 canoes and kayaks, both single- and two- person vessels, set out in groups of four every two minutes from the Treadwell Boat Launch. Participants paddled 11 kilometres down the Ottawa River to dock at the Lefaivre .BSJOB Average time for the journey was about an hour and a half, but Côté noted that a few of more expert paddlers made the trip in less than an hour. This year’s event featured both professio- nal and recreation dividions for participants. Some entrants from Québec travelled down from the Gatineau region to take part or came up from the Vaudreuil area. «It was a good success,» said Côté, who also took part in the race. «I twas good weather. Everybody had fun.»

List of Highways to be sprayed are as follows. Provincial Highway 17. Will be sprayed from Provincial Highway 508 to Forest Lea Road, Provincial Highway 148 will be sprayed from Robinson Lane to Quebec Border. Provincial Highway 34 will be sprayed from Provincial Highway 417 to Old Highway 17. Old Highway 17 will be sprayed from County Rd. 29 to County Rd. 20.
