In typical emergency or ‘grandparent’ scams, the victim receives a frantic phone call from someone, usually claiming to be a grandchild or other distant-yet-connected loved one. The fraudster claims to need money immediately to deal with some emergency, a car accident or being stuck in a foreign country, and plays upon fears of a loved one being in trouble. Often, the first warning sign is that the scammer needs the money immediately and insists that the victim not tell anyone. The quickest way to suss out such a scam is to take your time, ask how the caller is related to you, and then hang up and verify that connection. Do not fall for ploys of urgency, fear, or secrecy. Other safeguards include watching what you post online, as scammers can find per- sonal information on social media such as names, phone numbers, and even vacation dates. Again, verify the story with a trusted GBNJMZNFNCFSPSGSJFOE#&'03&TFOEJOH
Thanks to one bank teller’s quick thin- king, a vulnerable member of our com- munity was spared from being scammed out of their savings. The Russell County Ontario Provincial Po- lice (OPP) would like to recognize a Rockland bank teller who realized a customer was being scammed and stopped the withdrawal of funds. Thanks to their quick thinking, the would-be victim was advised of the scam before the funds could be transferred. On October 12, a fraudster called the victim stating he was a friend of hers and he needed money right away to deal with an emergency. The fraudster instructed the victim to go to the bank immediately, but the teller was immediately tipped off by the large amount of the withdrawal. The teller gently advised the victim of what was happening, telling her she should hang up, and then informed her of the scam that was

Incumbent mayor Mario Zanth will return to his office in city hall, after defeating councillor Don Bouchard for the post of Mayor of Clarence-Rockland in the 2022 municipal elections. Zanth’s victory gives him the opportunity to carry out his first full mandate, having been appointed mayor in 2020 after the passing of former mayor Guy Desjardins. “I ran because I wanted my own mandate and prove to people we are going to step it VQ uTBJE;BOUIi8FWFTBJEJUGSPNUIFHFU go of this campaign, it’s going to be about building and prospering together.” Zanth won the election by a margin of less than 1000, receiving 4874 votes to Bouchard’s 3951. Après une solide victoire contre Nepean la semaine précédente, les Nats n’ont pas été en mesure de poursuivre sur leur lancée contre Kemptville et Navan le weekend dernier, s’inclinant contre les deux équipes en déplacement. Le vendredi 21 octobre, à Kemptville, les Nats ont connu un début de match difficile contre les 73’s, menant 3-0 en pre- mière période, avant que Patrick Lanthier n’obtienne un but en supériorité numérique à la 20e minute. Les Nats ont accordé seu- lement deux autres buts au cours des deux périodes suivantes, avec Kyle Leonard qui en a marqué un avant que Kemptville ne marque le dernier but de la soirée, à la fin de la troisième période, portant le score final à 5-2 pour l’équipe locale. Un autre match à l’extérieur pour les Nats, le dimanche, s’est soldé par une dure défaite contre les Grads de Navan. Les Grads ont remporté une victoire de 6-1 sur les Nats, avec 40 tirs au but contre 18 pour les Nats. Une lueur d’espoir dans la faible défense des Nats a été le gardien de but Hadyn Gould, qui a joué toutes les 60 minutes, arrêtant les 34 tirs restants. Ce vendredi, Rockland jouera finalement son premier match à domicile depuis un mois contre les Wolves de Renfrew, suivi d’un autre match à l’extérieur, à Carleton Place, dimanche après-midi. Les Wolves et les Jr Canadians de Carleton occupent actuellement les deuxième et troisième places, respectivement, dans la division Robinson.
