NAPLAN 2026 – PRELIMINARY DATA AND NEXT STEPS Our school has now received the preliminary NAPLAN 2026 data for Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. While these early insights are valuable, our leadership and teaching teams are currently engaging in deeper analysis to understand emerging patterns, areas of strength, and opportunities for targeted improvement. It is important to note that this work remains ongoing, as the full NAPLAN 2026 reporting package—including the Individual Student Reports (ISRs)—will not be released until early Term 3. Once the finalised data set is available, we will be able to complete a comprehensive whole‐school review, triangulating NAPLAN results with classroom assessments, teacher judgements, and our internal monitoring tools. This will support more precise planning for Semester 2 and ensure that our interventions and curriculum adjustments are well aligned to student needs. SECONDARY CAMPUS – CATS, SACS, AND MID‐SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS Across Years 7–10, students have been completing Common Assessment Tasks (CATs) across all learning areas. These assessments provide consistent evidence of student achievement against the Victorian Curriculum standards and play an important role in Semester 1 reporting. Teachers have worked collaboratively to ensure CATs are rigorous, aligned to curriculum expectations, and support differentiated teaching based on student learning needs. For senior students, Semester 1 has been a significant assessment period, with VCE students finalising School- Assessed Coursework (SACs) for Units 1 and 3. These assessments provide authenticated evidence of achievement and help prepare students for the demands of Units 2 and 4. Teachers have continued to support students through targeted feedback, revision activities, and opportunities to strengthen key skills. Looking ahead, students in Years 10–12 will undertake Mid- Semester Examinations from 9–15 June, providing an opportunity to assess cumulative learning and develop examination skills. The assessment cycle concludes on 16 June with the General Achievement Test (GAT) for students studying a Year 12 VCE subject. The GAT supports quality assurance and assessment processes across the VCE and students have been preparing through focused instruction in writing, reasoning, and problem-solving.
PRIMARY CAMPUS – LITERACY AND NUMERACY PROGRESS On the Primary Campus, our focus on early intervention and high-impact instruction continues to strengthen student outcomes. This semester, our literacy intervention programs, MiniLit and MacqLit, have successfully commenced for students from Prep to Year 4. These evidence-based programs provide structured, systematic support for students requiring additional assistance in foundational reading skills. Early feedback from teachers and intervention staff has been highly positive, and we look forward to monitoring the progress of participating students throughout the year. In Numeracy, Primary teachers have continued to refine the instructional focus introduced last year, with strong results emerging across classrooms. Through the consistent implementation of explicit teaching strategies, rich mathematical tasks, and guided practice opportunities, students are developing greater confidence and capability in Mathematics. This work has been further strengthened by the introduction of our Numeracy Assessment Schedule, which provides a consistent, school-wide approach to monitoring student progress. The schedule enables teachers to identify misconceptions earlier, respond more precisely to student needs, and track growth over time, making it a key component of our ongoing Primary School Improvement Agenda. SEMESTER 1 REPORTS – RELEASE DATES To support families in accessing timely and comprehensive information about student progress, the following reporting timelines have been confirmed: Reports for Prep through to Year 10 students will be available on Friday 4th July Reports for Year 11 and 12 students will be available in Week 1 of Term 3. LOOKING AHEAD As Semester 1 draws to a close, our focus remains on maintaining consistent assessment practices that support student learning across all year levels. Through NAPLAN, Common Assessment Tasks (CATs), School-Assessed Coursework (SACs), intervention programs, and Mid-Semester Examinations, we have developed a strong understanding of student progress to inform Semester 1 reporting and Semester 2 planning. Across both campuses, staff continue to demonstrate a strong commitment to high-quality teaching and assessment, ensuring every student from Prep to Year 12 is supported to achieve success.

Year 8 Reflection
In Term 2, the Year 8s have been involved in many exciting and memorable events, making it a busy and enjoyable term for everyone. Students have had opportunities to participate in activities involving the performing arts, media, leadership, and sport, allowing everyone to develop new skills and create lasting memories with their peers. At the beginning of the term, on the 30th of April, students from 8B and 8C travelled into the city to watch the incredible one-man play The Bookbinder. The performance amazed students as a single actor brought an entire story to life through acting, storytelling, and creative use of props. Many students found the excursion entertaining and inspiring, while also gaining a greater appreciation for live theatre and performance. The very next day, on the 1st of May, students from 8A and 8C watched the film Edward Scissorhands for their Media CAT. The movie gave students the opportunity to analyse film techniques, themes, and characters while also enjoying the unique and imaginative storyline. It was a fun and engaging learning experience for everyone involved. Many Year 8 students have also participated in Development Programs throughout the term. On the 29th of May, the Dance Development Program visited the Primary Campus to teach Prep to Year 4 students the finale dance for the upcoming Song, Dance, and Drama Night, The Musical Multiverse. The Year 8 students demonstrated fantastic leadership, teamwork, and enthusiasm while helping the younger students prepare for the performance. Finally, on the 28th of May, many Year 8 students represented the school in Interschool Netball and Soccer. The boys’ soccer team won one game and showed excellent determination throughout the competition, while the girls’ netball team finished third overall after winning two games, drawing one, and losing two. Overall, Term 2 has been full of exciting opportunities and achievements for the Year 8 cohort.

EXHIBITION EXPLORATION
Our Year 7, Year 10 and VCE Art students recently visited the City of Whittlesea’s Annual Art Exhibition at PRACC, where they explored a diverse range of artworks inspired by the theme Belong. A highlight of the day was seeing one of our students purchase their first piece of artwork. The excursion provided a valuable opportunity for students to connect with the local arts community, gain creative inspiration and deepen their appreciation of the visual arts.
KEEPING WARM FOR A GREAT CAUSE! Our recent PJ & Winter Woolies Day was a great success, with students and staff across both the Primary and Secondary Campuses dressing in their warmest winter outfits to support a worthwhile cause. The day brought our school community together in a fun and positive way. Thank you to everyone who participated and donated. While the final amount raised is still being calculated, all funds will go towards purchasing equipment and resources to support student learning. We look forward to sharing the final total soon.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES: BUILDING SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE
Coding and problem-solving were also key areas of focus throughout the semester. Students used directional language and coding symbols to solve a range of hands- on challenges. Applying these skills, students created treasure maps that required peers to follow coded instructions to locate hidden items or complete challenges. Students identified important map features and carefully planned sequences using coding language and symbols. These activities supported students in developing logical thinking, sequencing and problem- solving skills while also encouraging creativity and collaboration. In Year 5/6, students explored both the hardware and software features of laptops while developing the skills required to use digital devices safely, responsibly and effectively. Students identified the physical features of laptops, including ports, keyboards, touchpads and screens, and discussed the purpose of different hardware components. A strong focus throughout the semester was developing independent technology skills. Students learnt how to safely log in to devices, manage passwords and understand the importance of protecting personal information online. They also explored file management skills, including creating folders, saving work correctly, downloading resources and uploading completed tasks online. These experiences helped students build confidence and independence when using digital technologies in a learning environment. Students explored the Microsoft suite and selected appropriate programs for different purposes. In Microsoft Word, students practised formatting skills such as changing fonts, centring text and creating dot points to improve the presentation and organisation of their work. Students also explored how different software programs can be used effectively for different tasks. A highlight of the semester was the “My Life So Far” PowerPoint project. Students designed and created presentations that reflected important moments and interests in their lives. Throughout the project, students explored slide design and layout, imported photos and other media, completed basic photo editing tasks, and used animations and transitions to enhance their presentations. Students demonstrated creativity and growing confidence in presenting information digitally while considering how media can be included purposefully to support communication. It has been wonderful to see students across all year levels enthusiastically engage with Digital Technologies this semester. Through these learning experiences, students have continued to develop important skills in communication, collaboration, problem-solving and digital literacy that will support them both inside and outside the classroom.
Throughout Semester 1, students across the school have been developing their knowledge and confidence in Digital Technologies through a wide range of engaging and hands-on learning experiences. From our youngest learners exploring directions and sequencing with Bee Bots, through to our senior students creating presentations and managing digital files, students have continued to build important skills that support problem-solving, creativity, communication and safe technology use. In Prep, students were introduced to the exciting world of Digital Technologies by exploring examples of digital technology in everyday life. Students learnt the importance of following instructions carefully and practised both giving and receiving written and verbal directions. Through games, movement activities and collaborative tasks, students began understanding how instructions need to be clear and sequenced correctly in order to complete a task successfully. A major focus for Prep students this semester was working with Bee Bots. Students explored how to use buttons and body actions to make the robots move forwards, backwards and turn. They developed their understanding of directional language, including quarter turns and half turns, while completing a variety of increasingly challenging tasks. Students programmed Bee Bots to spell words, locate numbers and shapes on mats, and navigate different pathways. They also learnt about debugging by identifying mistakes and changing instructions when the Bee Bots did not move as expected. Towards the end of the semester, students demonstrated growing confidence by creating their own challenges for classmates to solve, encouraging teamwork, communication and creative thinking. In Year 3, students explored the safe and appropriate use of digital technology and developed a stronger understanding of online safety. Students discussed personal information, password safety and the importance of creating strong passwords to help protect themselves online. They also explored comfortable and uncomfortable feelings that may arise when using technology and learnt strategies for responding appropriately and seeking help from trusted adults when needed. Students further strengthened their understanding of digital citizenship by creating activities and discussions focused on teaching younger students how to stay safe while using devices. Through these learning experiences, students demonstrated thoughtful and responsible approaches to technology use.
The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT
Dear Parents/Carers,
Thank you to all of our families who were able to attend our Education Week events. It was wonderful to see so many members of our school community join us for Open Day on the Primary Campus on May 21, as well as the opportunity to experience the Secondary Campus in action on May 22. These events provided a valuable chance to showcase student learning and strengthen the connection between home and school. Our Leadership Team is committed to enhancing our school–family learning partnership. We recognise that strong collaboration between families and the school plays a crucial role in supporting student engagement and wellbeing. Initiatives such as these open days are an important step in fostering open communication and a sense of community across our College. I would also like to extend my best wishes to our Year 12 students as they prepare for and sit the General Achievement Test (GAT) on June 16. In addition, I would like to wish all students in Years 10–12 the very best as they begin their upcoming exams next week. Together with Merriang SDS, we continue to advocate to the City of Whittlesea for speed humps along Gordons Road between the two campuses. A traffic study has now been completed, and we look forward to seeing the outcome soon.
School Council has also been pleased to support grant applications with letters of support to upgrade drinking taps across both campuses and improve the Secondary toilet facilities.
At School Council’s most recent meeting on 20 May, we:
Endorsed the confirmed 2026 College budget. Heard an update on our preliminary data from our 2026 NAPLAN results. Overall, across Years 3-9, the Strong band remains the dominant performance level. Agreed to submit a request to the City of Whittlesea to extend school crossing supervision hours at the Jardier Terrace crossing outside the Secondary Campus, to better support Primary students who are often still walking home after supervisors have finished. As of May 27, supervision at all four Secondary crossings have been extended until 3:40 pm. Discussed that the College’s 20th anniversary next year to be incorporated into the Welcome BBQ as an informal celebration, with a more formal celebration be reserved for the 25 anniversary. It is proposed that students will receive a small memento to mark the occasion. th Endorsed a request for the College to subsidise the Man Cave Program on Secondary this year to reduce the cost for families to participate. The program has traditionally been offered to Year 9 male students, but the proposal this year is to extend participation to Year 8–10 students. Reflected on the recent Mother’s Day Stall and Mother’s Day Breakfasts and noted additional funding from Camp Australia to support future community engagement activities. As always, we would love to hear from you. If you have any questions, ideas or items you would like raised at School Council, please feel free to contact me at amanda.farrelly@education.vic.gov.au or speak with one of our parent representatives. Council meets twice per term on Tuesdays at 5:30 pm, and visitors are always welcome.
Cheers,
Amanda Farrelly School Council President

NO HAT - NO PLAY We will be enforcing our ‘No Hat, No Play’ policy in Term 1 and 4 on the Primary Campus. Wide-brimmed hats (with the school logo), are available at the uniform shop. ROAD SAFETY AROUND THE LAKES SOUTH MORANG COLLEGE The Lakes South Morang College is situated near busy roads with heavy traffic throughout the day, with particular attention to the front of our school, where we have several busy intersections and shared pathways with Coles, Collingwood Language School, Merriang SDS and the Kinder. We strongly remind all families that students must always use the designated school crossings. We are increasingly noticing students exiting or entering vehicles while crossing or weaving through traffic, which poses a serious risk. Please use the designated drop-off zones and encourage your child to cross only at supervised crossings. Holding your child’s hand near roads and vehicles is a simple but effective way to support their safety. Please also take the time to talk with your child about how to stay safe near parked cars, footpaths, and driveways.
YEAR 5/6 NOTEBOOK PROGRAM - 2026 We’re writing to inform you of an important change to our technology program for Year 5 and 6 students starting in 2026. After careful consideration and in consultation with the School Council and broader school community, The Lakes South Morang College has made the decision to transition from iPads to Windows touchscreen notebook computers for students in Years 5 and 6. This move aligns our Primary and Secondary learning experiences and brings our technology use in line with most primary schools across Victoria, who have already adopted Windows-based programs. It also ensures our students are better prepared for the digital expectations of Year 7 and beyond. Why Are We Transitioning to Notebooks? While iPads have served many learning purposes, they are limited in supporting the broader skills needed in upper primary and secondary education. Windows-based touchscreen notebooks: Offer a full desktop computing experience Support keyboard proficiency and multitasking Provide compatibility with the software and systems used from Year 7 onwards Offer improved file management, software flexibility, and better integration with our college systems Devices purchased through our approved portals will be
supported at The Lakes in Years 7 and beyond. Support stylus use for handwriting and drawing
