Combating ‘Mom Guilt’

AND LEARNING TO SERVE FROM YOUR SAUCER

“You cannot serve from an empty cup.”

I’ll never forget one of the greatest lessons I learned from a beautiful mentor of mine. It was a powerful metaphor that sprang from one of the simplest images. It taught me the value of placing my health, my happiness, and my well-being first so that I may then give to my children and those I feel compelled to serve.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day this May, I believe this lesson is something all women need to learn.

Imagine a saucer holding a teacup.

Picture pouring tea into the cup, filling it all the way to the brim until a little bit spills over and rests in the saucer. It was at this point in the lesson that my mentor said the words that are still so profound to me to this day: “Serve from the overflow. Serve from your saucer. Fill yourself up so much that you’re serving from your saucer.”

I must take care of myself, serve myself, honor myself first before I can even begin to give of myself.

Those words hit me hard. “Mom guilt” is an all-too-real and all-too-frequent emotion many women feel, even if they are not moms. As women, we are taught to believe that if we are taking care of ourselves, then we must be letting someone else down. We are wired to be nurturers, to care, to be selfless. We focus our energy on making sure those who need us are served, and CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 ...

when we switch that energy to focus on something that’s meant for us, something that isn’t for the sake of others, we’re met with an internal wrestling match. We’re filled with immense guilt. We’re told we’re not doing enough. We believe we’re not showing up for others and giving the fullest service we possibly can. As a result, many moms are serving from an empty cup. As women, we are far too often compelled to tap into our deepest energy for others, even when that well has run dry. We run on fumes, and the second we try to push our energy toward bettering ourselves, we hear that voice telling us we don’t deserve to do it:

first. You’re also removing that burden from them. You’re telling your children, your spouse, your siblings, and your grandchildren that your love and care for them extends beyond the current needs you can fulfill for them. You’re saying that your care also includes providing your children with a better life, less burden, and more heart connection with you in the future.

“You don’t show your spouse how much they mean to you.”

–Danette May others by giving away what’s resting on your saucer, not by digging into an empty cup. Your “mom guilt” may never go away. You may always feel those pangs of wanting to do more. It’s only natural. But you can silence that guilt by continuing to serve The greatest thing you can give anyone you love is to lead a life that makes you vibrant and happy. Taking care of you, sister, is taking care of those you are most deeply connected to. The kindest thing a mother can do for her child is make sure she is filling both of their bellies with nutritious foods, moving her own body when she needs to, and connecting her own mind to her heart’s expression. As women, regardless of what motherhood looks like for us, we can show others what it means to serve from an overflowing saucer when we honor and fill our cups. We feed our souls whenever we eat healing foods. We honor our bodies whenever we sweat and move. We recognize our truest calling and nurture those we feel compelled to help when we make choices for the sake of our well-being, for the sake of our nurture. When you spend time preparing your meals, working out at the gym or walking around your neighborhood, and expressing your true calling, you’re doing one of the greatest services to those in your care.

“You don’t care for your parents’ needs enough.”

“You’re selfish.”

“You’re not woman enough.”

That voice in your head is lying to you. This could not be further from the truth. How can you give, provide, feed, and nurture your children and loved ones when your soul is starved and ragged? How can you provide the fullest, truest expression of what you have to offer this world when you haven’t had a chance to tap into that yet? How can you pour into other cups when your own cup is empty? I’m not immune to mom guilt, but it wasn’t until this beautiful mentor of mine put my mindsets about motherhood, about female leadership, and about giving to others in the simplest of terms that I understood what giving of myself truly meant. I cannot serve my daughters, guide my sisters, support my husband, or lead a movement unless my cup is full. I must take care of myself, serve myself, honor myself first before I can even begin to give of myself. This is true for mothers of all ages, too. While I’ve been on my own for quite some time now, I feel supported whenever my mom goes to the gym; eats healthy,

The greatest thing we can give anyone we love is to lead a life that makes us vibrant and happy. Taking care of you, sister, is taking care of those you are most deeply connected to.

By moving, eating healing foods, and connecting your mindset to your soul’s calling, you’re removing that burden of later- in-life care from their shoulders and placing it on your own. You’re in control of your destiny and how you care for others. You’re carrying that burden for them and teaching them to do the same for those they love.

“My advice to Fit Rise members is this: You did not gain the weight all in one day or get health problems over a short period of time. It’s going to take time to become healthier, so be patient with yourself and your body. The mindset piece that we are offered is helpful to stay focused and achieve our goals. This is a lifestyle that is sustainable and easy to adapt to.”

“I love everything about this program,” Elida says. “I’ve learned so much. I know what foods are good for my body, and the mindset piece has been a game-changer. I love that it’s actually sustainable, and it’s easy to make it fit everywhere you are. I recently went on a minivacation with my family, and I made great choices, whereas before I would not even bother. I did not gain a single pound.”

have found our tribe through social media. It’s amazing how much of a gift Facebook has turned out to be for our sisterhood! Not only does it keep us connected with the Fit Rise 365 group, but it also helps incredible ladies like Elida Kusha find us and get started on their rise.

So far, Elida has released 30 pounds following our lifestyle!

“I’m so blessed to be part of Fit Rise 365 with an amazing group of sisters and with an amazing mentor in Danette,” Elida says. “I love the wisdom and knowledge she shares with us and the world.”

Elida discovered Danette and our movement two years ago when one of Danette’s 30- Day New You Challenge videos popped up on her Facebook feed. She clicked and, after doing a bit more research, quickly fell in love with our philosophy. After that, it wasn’t long before she joined the sisterhood.

During that trip, Elida and her family journeyed from their hometown of Humble, Texas, to Las Vegas. She was mindful for the entire trip, and she even brought prepared smoothie ingredients and a blender along to make sure she stayed on her plan. All we can say to that is wow! Elida’s determination is inspiring, and

Elida, we’re so proud of how far you’ve risen. Keep living your truth!

Hamburgers, pizza, and tacos usually aren’t the most healing foods, but you can make healthier versions that will still get your kids excited. “What we like to do in our family is make homemade pizzas. Going on a journey to better health and fitness can be so exciting. When you feel lighter and happier every day, it’s natural to want to share that energy with your loved ones. That said, sometimes it’s difficult to know where to start when it comes to teaching your kids or grandkids healthy habits. Plus, we all have a stubborn little girl inside of us who could use the same advice, no matter how great our healing foods and movements make us feel.

Jazz up your water so you stay hydrated. Water cleanses our bodies, keeping our organs healthy and our eyes bright. To make it more fun to drink, try making healthy lemonade or fruit juice by adding fresh lemons and coconut sugar or blueberries and mint. 5. spending my days in bed, eating very little, and rarely moving. I was lost. I was stuck in a marriage I knew wasn’t working. I had a young daughter to care for, but I could hardly get out of bed to even feed her. Through it all, my soul was calling for me, but I couldn’t listen. I wasn’t ready to hear it just yet. My one ray of shining light as I was finding my way through my rock bottom was my eldest daughter, Sarah. She was only a little girl at the time, but Sarah was resilient, like most kids. We don’t give children enough credit for their flexibility, their ability to grow within resistance. I often look back on Sarah’s childhood, and there are moments when I’m swept over with shame and guilt. I was on my own path of self-development. I hadn’t yet learned how to love myself. I didn’t meditate. I wasn’t grounded. She felt my frustrations and bore the brunt of the low points in my journey right alongside me. I was still coming to terms with how I could stand in the power of my mind and the power of conscious parenting.

I recognize you and your motherhood this May, regardless of what it looks like and where it takes you. My journey into motherhood has made me the mom of three beautiful children. I became a mom when I was very young, but I will always be grateful that I was able to bear my children. Watching my daughters become the teenagers they are today has been one of my life’s greatest joys, and in turn, they have become some of my greatest teachers.

I’ve often shared the story of my son, Hap, who left this Earth unexpectedly before he even had a chance to live in it. After we lost Hap, I felt a very primal sadness, a very deep sense of loss and heartbreak. I spiraled into a depression very few people can understand,

Sarah embodies deep, deep wisdom. There’s a depth to her that is profound. She had to work through moments of intense transformation with me. In

It was a powerful journey I found myself on while Sarah was still a little girl. But the greatest thing we can do for our children and grandchildren is to be the most consciously aware of who we are at that moment. Do not underestimate the power of choosing your soul, of choosing to be grounded, of choosing to love yourself and be present in everything you love. Show up for yourself, and in turn, you will show up for your children, your grandchildren, and those you care for. You can change your child’s life by fully living, expressing, and harnessing your soul’s deepest calling. Today, my oldest daughter is one of my greatest teachers. At 17 years old, I see a deep understanding inside of her. She has seen my evolution and understands the struggle of poverty and the blessings of abundance. She’s watched this transformation I’ve been on, all the way from the brokenness to the empowerment and love, claiming the powers inside of her that only the road we traveled together could help her find.

return, she has wisdom I have yet to master and fully comprehend. She continues to inspire and amaze me every day. Her younger sister, my 12-year-old daughter, Samantha, has an infectious lightness to her. While I had Sarah before

starting my journey from rock bottom, Samantha joined us at a time when I was in my biggest

transformation. I was pushing and pursuing more of myself and my soul’s calling. She was born into a time of great spiritual growth, of great inner growth, and of great mindfulness. She has been blessed with a lifetime of healing foods and a mom who could make the conscious decision to grow, practice mindfulness, and be present in my soul’s true calling. So, where I see depth in Sarah, I see lightness in Samantha that shines onto everyone she meets. She has us laughing every day! She uses comedy as medicine, pinpointing exactly what the person she is talking to needs. She has an incredible ability to understand people’s needs, when they are dipping low and struggling in their woundedness. She lifts and heals with laughter. Samantha uses humor to lift people up, make others feel lighter, and bring out the happiness found deep in her soul. She shares this incredible gift with all of us. She understands how powerful and medicinal laughter is for our souls on the deepest level. It’s a profound calling that I’ve watched grow within her, lighting the path for others as she moves throughout her journey. Whether Sarah’s and Samantha’s souls were always this way, their nurture led them to this, or some combination of both, I believe they, like all children, possess a wisdom, strength, and heart connectedness that we adults cannot fully understand. Despite the pain, despite the mistakes parents make, despite the

struggles they may face, children are truly divine beings with deep wisdom coursing through their veins and cells. I am so grateful for the teachings my daughters have given me and continue to provide me. I am proud to be their mom and to have the opportunity to give them life, raise them, and encourage them to their soul’s truest callings. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, I have a challenge for you, sister. When you notice a child in your path, stop to let them know they are worthy. Use that nurturing instinct, that maternal nature, that motherly connection to let them know that you see them, that they have wisdom in them, and that they matter. Never underestimate the power of your words, being present for someone, and seeing them for the light they truly are.

I am so grateful for the teachings my daughters

Sarah has made the decision to be a good student and apply her mind in a positive way. She’s made the decision to be a good athlete, applying her physicality to push beyond the limits others set before her. She’s chosen good friends because she recognizes the strength and pull of the people she surrounds herself with. She understands that the choices she makes can set the trajectory of her life. have given me and continue to provide me. I am proud to be their mom, to have the opportunity to give them life, raise them, and encourage them to their soul’s truest calling.

That’s what it means to be a mother, and as a woman, you have that power.

Happy Mother’s Day,

The Truth About Working Out on an Empty Stomach

DOES IT HELP OR HURT YOU?

You’ve probably seen fitness blogs and magazines pushing the idea of “fasted cardio,” or doing cardio workouts on an empty stomach. The theory is that if you work out when you haven’t recently eaten — first thing in the morning, for example — your body will burn stored fat instead of the carbs and sugars from your recent meals. This is supposed to help you slim down more quickly, even if you’re doing the same workout. However, according to Healthline, those results aren’t guaranteed, and there could even be some risks to working out when you’re hungry. There aren’t very many studies on fasted cardio yet, but the information we do have seems contradictory. Healthline reports that a 2016 study of 12 men “found that those who didn’t eat breakfast before exercising burned more fat and reduced their caloric intake over 24 hours.” However, according to Men’s Journal, another study — this one published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition — found that a group of women “lost roughly the same amount of weight and fat with an hour INSP IRAT ION 8

of steady-state cardio whether they ate beforehand or not.”

So, what’s a girl to do in the face of all of this fasted cardio hype? Well, we say do what feels best for you. If you’ve worked out on an empty stomach before and felt powerful, glowing, and healthy, then keep it up. However, if you try it and it feels like it dims your light, then you’d probably be better off eating a snack before your workout, like an apple with almond butter or some hummus and fresh vegetables. When in doubt, listen to your body, not what’s trending.

What does seem clear is that there are some potential downsides to fasted workouts. For example, according to Healthline, your body could start burning protein instead of fat, making muscle repair after exercise more difficult. You also might have less energy and lowered performance without any healing foods fueling your movement. Lastly, if you end up with low blood sugar, you could start to feel nauseous, lightheaded, or shaky.

NUTRITION

WHAT ARE PRESERVATIVES, REALLY? The Dirty Little Secrets in Processed Food I n the Fit Rise 365 program, we talk a lot about healing foods and clean eating. By now, you know all about the red flags you should look for and avoid, like processed foods packed with artificial colors and flavors, additives, and preservatives. But what exactly are those freaky things that big brands are shoveling into processed foods? Sodium Benzoate: Common in sodas and packaged foods, this man-made, odorless powder (technically the sodium salt of benzoic acid) is also found in baby wipes, toothpaste, and hair products. According to Healthline, it’s even used to stabilize photo processing and keep coolant from corroding the engine in your car.

Sulfur Dioxide: If you’ve ever smelled a burnt match, you’ve probably inhaled a bit of sulfur dioxide. This toxic gas is considered a harmful pollutant in the atmosphere, but it’s also used in soft drinks, dried fruits and vegetables, and alcoholic beverages as a preservative. The FDA tests and approves preservatives before they’re allowed in our food, but both of the ones listed above have controversial records and have been linked to issues like asthma (sulfur dioxide) and cancer (sodium benzoate) in certain circumstances. We always suggest steering clear of chemical preservatives whenever you can. If you’re ever in doubt about which foods are healing foods, check your meal plans at Members.FitRise.com.

Let’s dig into preservatives and their dirty little secrets. The dictionary definition of a preservative is simply “a substance used to preserve foodstuffs, wood, or other materials against decay.” Back in the early days of preservation (we’re talking ancient Egypt here), vinegar, sugar, salt, and smoke were the preservatives of choice, and they helped extend the shelf lives of meats, fruits, and vegetables so people could survive tough seasons. Eventually, though, these natural methods were overtaken by chemical ones. Now, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defines a chemical preservative as pretty much anything that’s not natural but also isn’t used to kill plants and animals (an herbicide or a pesticide). Reassuring, right? Here’s a breakdown of just two common preservatives.

Artificial Flavors and the Brain I f you’ve been following Danette’s food guidelines, then you know she isn’t a fan of processed foods. Artificial flavors, sweeteners, dyes, and preservatives (which you can read more about on Page 9) are foreign substances that our bodies aren’t designed to process, and they can cause all kinds of problems, including headaches, fatigue, and lack of focus. Another theory, this one regarding artificial flavors, is that before people started making flavors in test tubes, the taste of a particular food told our brains which valuable nutrients were in it. Cravings were our body’s way of telling us we needed a particular food’s vitamins and minerals. Instead of hurting us, cravings helped us get the right amount of nutrition in our diets. This theory is supported by a study from 1926. For six years,15 babies got to eat anything they wanted from HOW MAN-MADE FLAVORINGS TRICK OUR BODIES

Still, odds are you sometimes find yourself craving your old favorites — the snacks that used to be your go-tos before you started down the path of healing your body with whole foods. Have you ever wondered why that is? What makes those chemical-covered chips or candies so addictive? It turns out that white sugar alone might not be the culprit — artificial flavors and sweeteners could be to blame, too. Scientists have come up with a few reasons that this might be the case. According to Scientific American, one theory is that artificial sweeteners can’t

a list of whole foods like apples, turnips, lamb, and bananas. Amazingly, their bodies naturally led them to adopt balanced diets. It follows that by offering taste without any nutritional value, artificial flavors can trick us into eating empty calories or continuing to eat even when we get the nutrients we need. If all of this is freaking you out, we get it! Luckily, by avoiding processed foods, you can reset your cravings and keep most of this trickery out of your diet. When you can, try to aim for the purest versions of whole foods, like organic or heirloom varieties. GREEN TIP OF THE MONTH

Step 2: Plan your smart swaps. Once you know what you have, it’s time to choose which items you’d like to swap out for alternatives with cleaner ingredients or better eco-friendly reputations. Look around online for brands that make those products in a greener way. Plenty of websites out there provide great resources for clean, organic products. Once you’ve found makeup you’re excited about, you can either swap everything out right away or use up what you have and replace things slowly. Step 3: Enjoy your healthy glow. Hopefully, your skin will love the swaps you make. However, ultimately, your makeup journey is also about finding what works best for you and doing what you can in the situation you’re in. If you can’t afford blush made with organic ingredients or if your skin reacts to it badly, don’t beat yourself up about sticking to your tried-and-true brands. If you’re not sure what’s in a product, how it’s tested, or whether it’s eco- friendly, try Googling the brand for answers.

By choosing healing foods, we’re pledging not to put poison in our bodies. Things like white sugar, chemicals, additives, pesticides, and preservatives are awful for our internal systems and put our health at risk. If you’re already being careful of what you put in your body, a great next step is to be careful of what you put on your body — starting with your makeup. Here’s the big question: Does your makeup align with your values? The scary truth is that a lot of makeup is full of problematic chemicals and is associated with things that harm the
