RACE DAY FEATURE

B efore Makybe Diva, Archer (1861-62), Peter Pan (1932 and 1934), Rain Lover (1968-69) and Think Big (1974-75) were the only other horses to win multiple Melbourne Cups. David Hall trained Makybe Diva in her initial Cup victory before moving to Hong Kong. Then entered Lee Freedman. Before long we were no longer looking at a mere handicapper but an elite weight-for-age performer. Makybe Diva was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2006 and elevated to Legend status in 2010. After several years at stud, she has yet to leave progeny anywhere near the same class as herself but, if history follows form, watch out for progeny from her daughters. CUP by CUP How she did it

2003 Having demonstrated her talent as a four- year-old with six consecutive wins, Makybe Diva was a strong contender for the 2003 Melbourne Cup. In front of a record crowd of 122,736, Glen Boss who had become her regular partner in victory, rode her patiently, picking his way through the field from the back before making a charge with 200m to go, holding off She’s Archie to win by 1.3 lengths carrying 51kg.

She’s Archie tries hard, but Makybe Diva wins the Cup! ,VIK2MPIW “ ”

2004 Under Lee Freedman, Makybe Diva’s win in the Sydney Cup and second place in the Caulfield Cup had many believing she could be the first mare to win the Melbourne Cup twice. At a rain-soaked Flemington, Boss again rode her close to the rail and placed back in the field, flashing home to win in the last few hundred metres, edging out Vinnie Roe and again winning by 1.3 lengths, with a weight of 55.5kg. And she’s going to do what no mare has ever done! Makybe Diva wins it again! ,VIK2MPIW “ ”

Go find the smallest child on this course, because they will be the only example of a person who will live long enough to see something like that again. 1II+VIIHQER

A champion becomes a legend! Makybe Diva has won it! ,VIK2MPIW “ ” ” 2005 After a slew of major wins, Freedman and Santic decided Makybe Diva was fit enough to race. Sentiment and anticipation saw her start the favourite. Boss placed her perfectly, guiding her through the field until the final 300m, when she sprinted past the roaring crowd to make history. Her winning margin was 1.3 lengths again, and she carried the record weight of 58kg. Following the win, Tony Santic announced that the ‘Diva’ was to be retired, closing the chapter on one of the most incredible moments in Australian racing history.

And it is in this very same spirit that the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) launches the 2IPFSYVRI(YT+SYRHEXMSR this Cup Week. A CHARITABLE FOUNDATION THAT EMBODIES OUR CORE VALUES. The Melbourne Cup Foundation is an embodiment of all that the VRC stands for. It draws on our history, heritage and commitment to improvement in every aspect of racing: the industry, the animals, and the lives and livelihoods of the people who participate. The Foundation’s ethos and intent is consistent with VRC values since our inception 160 years ago. The Club has played a central role in supporting Australian racing culture, equine welfare, and education and training across many related industries. Indeed, these three pillars form the Foundation’s very purpose. OUR HERITAGE & COMMUNITY The VRC i s proud to announce the Me lbourne Cup Founda t ion Honouring

HERITAGE AND CULTURE

The heritage and culture of Australian racing is in our DNA. The VRC has always been here to celebrate and promote the best of Australia’s racing heritage. Through the Foundation, we can nowwork to bring a national focus to our current Heritage Centre and the history of racing.

EQUINE HEALTH & WELLBEING The VRC is ethically bound to deliver optimal outcomes in equine health, care and welfare. The Foundation will enable us to act with purpose and integrity, and seek to safeguard the care and wellbeing of horses throughout their lives, as well as the people in our racing community and their families, helping to ensure they are mentally healthy and have the support they need to thrive. COMMUNITY & EDUCATION We’ve long been a member of the Australian community and recognise that our organisation can only ever be as strong and as healthy as the local, national and industry communities we work with and in. These relationships are all-important to our business and operations. Establishing the Melbourne Cup Foundation will help us to partner with educational institutions to facilitate training in racing, hospitality and event management.

Tuesday 3rd November 2020 Flemington,Victoria

Dear Australia, Thank you,

for taking a race for a fabled golden watch and turning it into an event that stops time. Ours is a tradition made by many, and made great by a great many more. Together, we have made memories weaved with magic. We’ve watched you fall in love on our front lawn. You’ve set trends, as we’ve set records and we both have broken them, time and time again. Thank you for your deafening cheers and unbowing enthusiasm; rain, hail or shine.

Together we have captivated a nation and shaped it. To make history it takes more than the operation of time, it takes care, imagination, devotion from each one of a cast of thousands. It’s only the greatest cast that makes this the greatest show. So, for your devotion we give you ours.

BALALAIKA (GB)

BELLA COLORA (GB)

David Gately’s Analysis Worked up near strong speed in Cox Plate and fought hard when Sir Dragonet went to him. Drops to 53.5kg as Northern Hemisphere three- year-old. First go at the trip but doubt that will be an issue.

David Gately’s Analysis Was wide and worked, terrific effort to run third in Group 3 The Bart Cummings here then tough effort to win Geelong Cup. Overraced off slow speed in this race last year and ran very well.

David Gately’s Analysis Had his chance in Caulfield Cup but beat many key rivals home. Had no hope in this race last year off that slow tempo. Good second to Etah James in Sydney Cup at 3200m.

David Gately’s Analysis Flew home in TAB Turnbull Stakes here when looking desperate for 2400m. Ran on quite well late in Caulfield Cup but others were stronger. Gets back to Flemington which is a big tick. AAMI Victoria Derby winner last year here.
