CRAIG NOWELL DIRECTOR OF CAMPUS INFRASTRUCTURE AND OPERATIONAL SUPPORT SERVICES

About the University of Exeter The University of Exeter is a Russell Group university that combines world-class re- search with excellent student satisfaction. Officially receiving its Royal Charter in 1955, the University has since grown to become a dynamic and successful institution, placed in the top 15 of all the main UK Higher Education league tables and ranking within the top 200 of all institutions globally. Exeter has over 22,000 students from more than 178 different countries at four campuses in Devon and Cornwall. Our success is built on a strong partnership with our students and a clear focus on exceptional teaching and research and high performance. We have close to 5,000 staff working across six colleges and multiple support services, and are one of the major employers in Devon and Cornwall. Research at the University is changing lives around the world. Recent breakthroughs include the identification and treatment of new forms of diabetes, new treatments for dementia and the development of solutions in the fight against climate change. In 2018 we announced the launch of our new Global Systems Institute. One of the largest of its kind in the world, it will bring together researchers, policymakers, businesses and students from around the globe to seek solutions to the biggest environmental challenges. We also launched a new joint research centre with the Chinese University of Hong Kong that aims to tackle emerging issues related to a changing environment and human health. These developments further our commitment to research excellence and follow our largest investment in research to date; the £52 million Living Systems Institute (LSI) on our Streatham Campus. The LSI seeks to revolutionise disease prevention through predictive biology and houses over 200 scientists from a wide range of disciplines. This development complements the Environment and Sustainability Institute in Penryn which provides an interdisciplinary centre to lead cutting-edge research into the consequences of environmental change and the mitigation and management of its effects. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), the University ranked 16th nationally, with 98% of its research rated as being of international quality, and in 2017, was awarded a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessment. We are consistently ranked amongst the UK’s top universities in the Higher Education league tables produced by The Times and The Sunday Times, The Guardian and The Complete University Guide, as well as amongst the world’s top 200 universities in the QS and Times Higher Education global rankings. Exeter has always been among the leaders for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey. Our senior management team has sought to build on this strength by putting student services at the centre of our organisational strategy. The Students’ Guild and FXU (the students’ unions in Exeter and Cornwall respectively) are involved at the earliest stages of strategic planning and given a major role in making spending decisions through a specially created Student Experience Advisory Group. This has led to a remarkable degree of joint thinking and team work.

Our Estate The University of Exeter estate comprises over 360,000 square metres of academic, administrative, commercial and residential accommodation on 430 acres of land in Exeter, Penryn and Truro.

Our campus locations span both Devon (Exeter) and Cornwall (Truro and Penryn) across the beautiful South West of England.

The University of Exeter’s Green Flag awarded Penryn, Streatham and St Luke’s Campuses are acknowledged as the most beautiful and botanically interesting of any UK University. Streatham Campus is described by The Times as the ‘best-gardened campus in Britain’ and by The Independent as having a ‘sublime’ setting. The Streatham Campus is a registered botanical garden that is home to specialist plant collections including the National Collection of Azara in co-operation with Plant Heritage and the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens. The University’s Capital Strategy outlines our commitment to invest £468m in our estate, facilities and infrastructure over the next ten years as long as we meet the planned financial savings targets we have set ourselves. The strategy sets out the capital programme of work to be undertaken in this period and is supported by an Estates Strategy that details the development of our estate and buildings, IT infrastructure, equipment, and funding for risks and opportunities.
