Did You Know? Army Navy Drive: The History

Army Navy Drive, one of the oldest roads in Arlington County, was so named in the mid-1930’s (some say) because it gave quick access from the military headquarters in the District to the Army Navy Country Club. It was formerly known as Old Georgetown Road, the main pathway connecting Alexandria and Georgetown in Colonial days. The route ran from Alexandria to the ferry across the Potomac from what is now Rosslyn to Georgetown. George Washington (and Thomas Jefferson most likely) traveled the route often enroute to and from the Federal City. Near the end of the Civil War Days and for some time following, a number of military huts or cabins serving as hospitals filled both sides of the road close to what is now our property line.
