P rime Minister, Boris Johnson’s 10-point plan to bring forward the ban on new petrol and diesel cars to 2030, will lead to faster adoption of electrical vehicles which can drive forward a green economic recovery, says David Hall, VP Power Systems for Schneider Electric. “Encouraging more people to adopt electric vehicles is at the heart of the government’s efforts to tackle climate change and reduce air pollution – especially as emissions from the transport sector accounts for 23% of the UK’s overall CO2 emissions,” says David. “It is clear that with the UK now having more EV charging points than petrol stations and a ban on combustion cars to be brought forward to 2030, we should be determined to ensure EVs become the dominant purchase option during the next ten years. “With this boom in the e-mobility sector being powered by electricity, we need to turn our attention to the potential strain EV adoption could put on the UK’s power infrastructure. “Utilities stakeholders need to decide how to invest in upgrading the electrical network without creating upward pressure on the cost of electricity for consumers and businesses, which may weaken the appetite for electric vehicle charging.” www.se.com The road to recovery is green

D owds Group employees stacked up a total of over 42,000 miles in 28 days, by walking, cycling, running, swimming and general exercising to raise over £4,430 for their chosen charity, Mates in Mind. Dowds Group set their employees a health and wellbeing challenge to get the furthest around the world within 28 days by adding up their exercise miles. Split into four groups, staff got into the competitive spirit to build up their individual team’s mileage. After a tight race with only 200
miles between first and second place, Team Melissa soared ahead during the final weekend to clock up a total of 12,476.66 miles and earn those all important bragging rights. The aim of the challenge was to support each other’s mental and physical health (particularly important for employees still working remotely from home), as well as stir up a little friendly competition!

UKelectricians’ 5.6%pay rise
A ccording to Hudson Contract, the UK construction industry’s biggest payer of subcontractors, self- employed electricians earned an average of £1,074 a week last month- a 5.6 % rise on average. It was the fourth consecutive month in which weekly pay was above the £1,000 threshold.
Electrical contractors in Yorkshire and the Humber saw the strongest growth in October (up 31.7 %) followed by their counterparts in the East Midlands (up 24.3%) and the North West (up 10.8%). Ian Anfield, Managing Director of Hudson said, “Our clients are telling us they have full order books and that demand for skilled trades continues to outstrip supply… it will be business as usual up to Christmas in spite of the new lockdown. “We welcome the extra clarity from Government Ministers that construction workplaces should stay open during the next four weeks. Covid-19 financial support for self-employedelectricians –NI andROI

T he UK and Ireland governments continually update the covid-19 financial support measures available to self-employed electricians and other trades. To make it easier for you to check what you are currently entitled to (north or south), we asked business advisers, PKF-FPM, to put all the latest support measures information in one place for you to access. Read on… NORTHERN IRELAND The UK Government announced a critical package of support to protect the jobs of self-employed workers across the UK as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) The scheme’s first grant provided a taxable cash grant of 80% of an individual’s average monthly profits over the last three years of up to £2,500 per month and the second grant provided for 70% an individual’s average monthly profits over the last three years of up to £2,190 per month. While the final date for applying for both the first and second SEISS grants has now passed, the government announced a further extension in the form of an additional two grants, each available for the periods covering November 2020 to January 2021, and February 2021 to April 2021. Grants will be paid in two lump sum instalments, each covering a three-month period.
To be eligible for this extended support, self-employed individuals, including members of partnerships, must: • Have been previously eligible for the Self- Employment Income Support Scheme first and second grant (although they do not have to have claimed the previous grants). • Declare that they intend to continue to trade and either: • Are currently actively trading but are impacted by reduced demand due to coronavirus. • Were previously trading but are temporarily unable to do so due to coronavirus. To have been eligible for the initial two grants, and therefore eligible to apply for the extended supports, individuals and members of partnerships must have met the following criteria: • Trading profits of less than £50,000 in 2018/19 or an average trading profit of less than £50,000 from 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19 tax years. • Using your tax returns, HMRC will calculate your trading profits by taking turnover less any allowable business expenses and capital expenditure. Note allowable expenses include capital allowances, flat rate expenses, qualifying care relief and business expenses deducted through the trading allowance. HMRC will not deduct any losses carried forward from earlier years from your trading profits. • More than half of their income in these periods must come from self-employment. • They must have traded in the 2019/20
tax year, are continuing to trade when they apply for the scheme (or would be except for Covid-19), intend to continue to trade in the 2020/21 tax year and they have lost trading profits due to Covid-19. • They have submitted an Income Self- Assessment Tax Return for 2018/19 tax year. Level of support The first grant - as part of this extension - will cover a three-month period from 1 November 2020 until 31 January 2021. The UK government announced on November 5, that it will increase the support available to the self-employed to mirror the extension to the furlough scheme. Rishi Sunak announced the UK government will provide a lump sum taxable grant covering 80% of three months average trading profits, capped at £7,500 in total. This is a further increase on the 55% previously announced. Claims in respect of the new extended supports, which are taxable income and subject to National Insurance contributions, can be made online from November 30, 2020. The second grant will cover a three- month period from February 1, 2021 until April 30, 2021, with the government to confirm the level of support to be provided in due course. VAT Payment deferral Self-employed who deferred VAT due from March 20, to June 30, 2020, can also avail of further government support.

T he Irish Government announced a critical package of support to protect the jobs of self-employed workers across Ireland as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. Covid Restrictions Support Scheme (CRSS) On October 13, 2020, as part of the budget, the Government announced CRSS - a new support scheme for business. CRSS provides a cash payment to be known as an “Advance Credit for Trading Expenses”. This payment will be equal to 10% of their average weekly turnover in 2019 up to €20,000 and 5% thereafter, subject to a maximum weekly payment of €5,000 for each week that their business is affected by the Covid restrictions. The scheme is available to affected self- employed individuals and companies who carry on a trade or trading activities from a business premises located wholly within a geographical region for which Covid-19 restrictions are in operation. CRSS is available where a business is either forced to temporarily close their business, or the business is required to operate at significantly reduced levels because of the restrictions. Generally, this refers to Covid restrictions at Level 3, 4 or 5 of the Government’s Plan for Living with Covid-19 but certain businesses may qualify for the support where lower levels of restrictions are in operation. To qualify for the scheme, a business must be able to demonstrate that, because of the Covid restrictions, the turnover of the business in the period for which the restrictions are in operation and for which a claim is made, will be no more than 25% of the average weekly turnover of the business in 2019. Government increases EQSS and PUP to €350 Following the move to Level 5 of the Plan for Living with COVID for the entire country, the Government have extended the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS) and Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP). EWSS EWSS is revised to align with PUP with a maximum subsidy payment of €350 per employee per week. Prior to this change the top rate of EWSS was €203 per
week and applied to employees with a gross weekly wage from €203 to €1,462. The changes are effective from the next payroll date after October 19, 2020. The revised EWSS rates are: Gross weekly pay.....................................EWSS Less than €151.50..............................................Nil €151.50 to €202.99....................................€203 €203 to €299.99.........................................€250 €300 to €399.99.......................................€300 €400 to €1,462............................................€350 Over €1,462..........................................................Nil PUP The highest rate of PUP will be restored to €350 per week for those earning more than €400 per week before the pandemic. The increase will apply to payments on or after October 27. The PUP will now be paid at four rates as follows: Gross weekly earnings...............................PUP Less than €200............................................€203 €200 to €299.99........................................€250 €300 to €399.99.......................................€300 €400 or more...............................................€350 Commercial Rates Relief The waiver of commercial rates for businesses negatively impacted by Covid-19 pandemic has been extended to December 31, 2020. Pay and File Extension for Income Tax Returns Revenue have announced an extension until December 10, for 2019 income tax returns that are filed and paid online via ROS. This extension also applies to pension contributions, so self-employed taxpayers can claim tax relief on pension contributions up to the date that they submit their 2019 income tax return. Furthermore, the debt warehousing arrangement has been extended to income tax liabilities. This means that the balance of income tax due in relation to 2019 together with preliminary tax for 2020 can be warehoused if as a result of Covid-19 restrictions the taxpayer’s total income for 2020 will be less than 75% of the individual’s total income for 2019. To avail of the debt warehousing scheme for self-assessed income tax, a taxpayer is required to make a declaration to the collector general when filing their income tax return for 2019.
Instead of the full amount becoming due by the end of March 2021, UK VAT registered business can opt in to the scheme to pay smaller payments over a longer period, to March 31, 2021, interest free. Government back support loans On 2 November, the UK government announced that businesses will continue to be able to apply to banks for government-backed support loans until January 31, 2021 compared with a previous November 30, 2020 deadline. These loans include the Bounce Back Loan Scheme and Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme. “The UK government announced on November 5, that it will increase the support available to the self- employed to mirror the extension to the furlough scheme.”

V an drivers frustrated by having to wait in line to collect pre-ordered items could be a thing of the past thanks to a clever electronic fob and reader system designed by Noel Harper, Managing Director for Harper’s Specialist Cables and Components, Castlereagh, Belfast. “When Covid-19 trading restrictions came into play, it was an opportunity to do things differently and additionally help our staff and customers keep safe,” says Noel. “Having recently built a new lighting showroom, we had decided on the area adjacent for the trade counter. Timing coincided with lockdown allowing us to amend the design away from the traditional open counter and display
layout, to screened service hatches and four bays of collection cubicles. Orders phoned in ahead of collection will be left out in this room on a numbered cubicle shelf. Currently we just need the paperwork signed but this will change as we improve the service.” “It is a radical change away from how trade custom is conducted, but very effective in limiting personal interaction and unnecessary close contact. The majority of our customers are account holders and will have discussed the day’s requirements prior to requesting goods be left for collection or delivery. At the time, wholesalers appear to be responding to a varied and unpredictable demand in the market. Order levels may
be reduced, nevertheless the wholesaler seeks to provide a quick and efficient service and Harpers are adapting to assist their efforts.” “We saw this period of adaption as an ideal moment to implement a new collection system and improve our service to the majority of our customer base.” Automated Collection Working closely with a product designer, Noel created an electronic collection system that would eliminate time-wasting queues for their clients’ busy delivery drivers. Noel explains, “Regular account holders will now receive electronic key fobs that are digitally linked to their company account with Harpers. These fobs can be issued to their van driver or assigned person when picking up their ordered items. The wholesaler customer places an order, we assemble it and place it in a numbered compartment inside the new

for example are providing something similar to us. You ring in your prescription and they will make it up and leave it in a coded post box for you to pick up outside. People are getting used to this contactless way of living.”
collection area. When the van driver calls in, they present their key fob to the card reader inside the room (there is no need to queue). A light will automatically switch on to indicate the allocated compartment. The driver then lifts the items, which has all the paperwork attached, and leaves. There is no need to sign for the order, as it is all logged by the card reader and linked to the wholesaler’s account digitally. We get a printout to say the customer has been in and collected it and there is a CCTV record of the visit also.” “Crucially, that person isn’t wasting delivery time by standing in line, delayed while we figure out what the customer in front of him needs.” Importantly, this convenient service is also available out of hours, as Noel explains. “We have installed a large locker room outside our premises. The key fob will unlock the digitally coded door allowing the pick-up driver to
collect their company’s order without even entering the premises. This is both logged electronically and recorded on CCTV. No signature required. Additionally, a customer can be given the digital entry code by their wholesaler for an out-of-hours collection, simply to allow access to the locker outside our premises. During business hours, the facility could be used for the wholesaler’s contractors working in the vicinity to have a quicker service provided the order number and time is given to assemble their requirements. Codes are changed upon operation and collection.” Customer feedback to the order and collect system has been positive, with a huge buy- in from the Harper workforce. “Our staff really appreciate how straightforward and efficient this new system is,” says Noel. He believes order-and-collect is here to stay. “I see the automated collection system being more ingrained in the industry post-covid. It is already being used by some retailers. Chemist shops,
Noel is continuing to develop the automated external system as a
commercial product for wholesalers. “We will provide an external installation of between four-to-eight electronically coded lockers for wholesalers to install outside their premises. The wholesaler then issues key fobs to their clients who can access the box and lift their goods out-of-hours or when they want to avoid queuing at the trade counter. Noel concludes, “Covid-19 has disrupted normal working processes and systems throughout our industry. We have to rethink how we do things. I am hopeful that the take-up of automated order and collection systems will be a positive legacy.”

alternative to the conventional 2x 36W TL-D or 2x 58W TL-D surface-mounted luminaires. You can count on significant energy savings. The luminaire provides comfortable light, thanks to the milky white opal cover to spread the light evenly. Another big advantage is the easy way to install. The luminaire can be connected to the mains via the central input at the back as well as via the side. DOWDS GROUP MAKES A SPLASH AT SOUTH LAKE LEISURE CENTRE WITH INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS AND HIGH-QUALITY DELIVERY... THINKINGOUTSIDETHEBOX
M +E specialist contractor Dowds Group managed the full electrical and mechanical contracts of the state-of-the-art South Lake Leisure Centre – one of the largest public sector construction projects within Northern Ireland in recent years. The new multi-use sports and leisure complex represents a major new flagship health and wellbeing destination. Built by contractor Farrans, the venue contains a 50m pool, learner pool and leisure pool, the largest gym in Northern Ireland featuring state-of-the- art equipment, spin and dance studios. It also includes an extensive health and
wellbeing suite, activity rooms, squash courts and a large sports hall suitable for a variety of sporting activities, as well as expansive outdoor water sports provision. Commenting on the project, Thomas Graham, contracts manager for Dowds Group says, “Dowds Group delivered the entire electrical package from design through to completion and we will continue our involvement as building maintenance contractor. We engaged one-to-one with the client to fulfil their aspirations and ensure that what they wanted was delivered and maintained throughout the building. “We completed the package to a very high
standard, as we do all the projects with which we are involved – that’s our ethos.” With a proven ability to undertake design and build contracts in the demanding healthcare sector – along with numerous education, industrial and commercial/ retail projects – Dowds Group was a solid choice to provide client Armagh City Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council with innovative solutions to the project’s complex electrical engineering challenges. Challenges “One of the major challenges concerned the pool areas,” explains Thomas. “The pools are a C4 environment with

atmospheric corrosivity caused by moisture and chlorine. “The problem we had was in finding a product to support all our systems that met the C4 criteria. Stainless steel would be our normal choice but only a certain grade is suitable for use in a pool environment. However, none of the products on offer were available in that grade. We had to source a new product to coat the threaded rods and nuts. Standard coating can not be used. “We found a coating product that is normally used in automotive industry. Eventually, we sourced this specialist coating material from America. “We contacted local supplier, Unitrunk, who took it all on board. They supplied all the support products (nuts and bolts etc), coated them and certified the lot as one system. “As far as I know, this in the first time this
product was used in this type of setting. It’s an example of how innovative Dowds Group is – we strive to provide solutions.” Dowds Group also champions the use of workshops for clients as Thomas explains: “To counter any potential misunderstandings we’ll design to a certain stage then invite the client to a workshop. We’ll explain our understanding of their requirements and check that is correct. These workshops are very useful because if there is a misunderstanding, 99 times out of 100 it doesn’t cost anything to remedy. We can just make that tweak and you get a very happy client at the end of the job. We do these workshops on every system. At least once, depending how complex the system is.” Thomas was full of praise for everyone involved in the project: “This project was a prime example of best practice,
of how a job should and could be done. Everyone on the project worked together towards the same goal – a building built to the client’s expectations. It was inspiring to see and be a part of it. “I’ve since moved into another position within Dowds and I am so gratified that this was my last job as a Contracts Manager. F ire and security system experts, Atlas World, delivered a full suite of products and services to help keep premises, staff and leisure users at South Lake Leisure Centre safe and secure. Atlas World installed fire, intruder and pool alarm systems, access control, disabled refuge, disabled toilet alarm, IP CCTV system, PA and sound systems. The biggest challenge faced on the project was the unprecedented impact that Covid-19 presented. Graeme White, Head of Sales Director for Atlas World says, “Everything was affected, from equipment delivery, site operating times and resource availability. It required daily management, driven by the main contractors and championed by our on site team to quickly relay problems and potential issues to ensure unaffected project delivery wherever possible.
“A knock on effect meant that some of our supply chain partners actually ceased trading during the lockdown period. This meant we no longer had a supplier for the specialist pool alarm system that was required on the project. In order to prevent a major delay on the project, we set about sourcing the required parts and manufactured the complete system in- house, meaning project milestones were achieved as planned.” A privately-owned company with over 40 years experience within the fire and security industry, Atlas World works with consultant engineers, design and build teams, M&E contractors, FM companies and building owners. With Investors in People accreditation, the company’s commitment to staff training and development was evident on this project. “How our project team dealt with unforeseen problems to ensure
this project was delivered on time has to be the most satisfying aspect of this installation,” says Graeme. He also praised Dowds Group’s Contracts Manager, Tommy Graham and his team, for their “excellent communication and management skills. They were second to none.”

ANOTHER PREMIER INSTALLATION PROJECT DELIVERED BY SPECIALIST CABLING PROVIDER, MERTICOM LTD... CABLING INSTALLATION
M eritcom provided a structured cabling installation for South Lake Leisure Centre consisting of a Cat6 network to cater for data, Wi-Fi, CCTV and IPTV services as well as fibre optic and multipair backbone links. In addition to this, Meritcom delivered the audiovisual and IPTV infrastructure for the site consisting of roof mounted aerial/satellite array, fibre optic backbone, Arantia, Televes Corp IPTV system headend and IPTV data switches to distribute IPTV system over the cat6 network. These were connected to displays that Meritcom installed: a Panasonic Laser Projector for the Spin Studio, Samsung Smart TVs and several large format video walls including an LG 4 x 3 video wall in GF Canteen. Meritcom also provided a number of Arantia Digital Signage players for this project. Trading since 2001, Meritcom is the
