NEW! ACT Workshop

FREE

How can K12 educators help learners navigate their post-secondary options? San Bernardino County educators are invited to participate in a three-hour workshop that offers resources and frameworks to help students plan and prepare for their college and career choices. ACT College and Career Readiness Workshops are a chance for K12 leaders in counseling, administration, assessment and curriculum development, and education to learn and collaborate on the latest trends in college and career readiness. We will address how to acquire and use tools to help visualize and use college readiness data as well as how we can help students that are not taking AP tests validate their academic skills through workforce credentials and badges. In addition to participants being eligible to receive continuation NBCC education credits, attendees will be provided with no-cost strategies and resources that enhance career exploration programs and promote a college-minded school culture.

This free workshop, offered in partnership with the California Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CASFAA), the California Community Colleges Student Financial Aid Administrators Association (CCCSFAAA) and the Educational Credit Management Corporation (ECMC), provide crucial financial aid information, updates, and resources to high school counselors, AVID Coordinators, advisors, student advocacy groups, outreach specialists and community education partners. In addition to our continued focus on the All In for FAFSA/CA Dream Act Completion Initiative for high school seniors, we will address the upcoming changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) through the Better FAFSA Better Future campaign and updates to the California Dream Act Application (CADAA).

The American College Application Campaign (ACAC) is a national initiative designed to increase the number of first-generation college students and students from low-income families who pursue a postsecondary degree. Elementary Teachers Cultivating Writing Schoolwide - Elementary (AVID Center Path)

The Cultivating Writing Schoolwide Elementary Community of Practice is designed to engage and empower elementary educators of grades PreK–6 with foundational knowledge and strategies to increase skills and confidence in writing as a powerful tool in a 21st century learning environment. Educators across all discipline areas will gain strategies for teaching the writing process and building an understanding of the academic modes of writing (persuasive, expository, narrative, and descriptive) as well as writing for a range of academic purposes. Participants will explore the power of metacognitive writing to cultivate literacy and student agency, with a focus on primary and intermediate learning environments. This collaborative experience allows educators to support learners in accessing rigorous content and writing like content experts.

Participants will explore opportunities to provide students with diverse text types and activate background knowledge to support engagement with content and extend students’ depth of comprehension. Educators will experience AVID’s Critical Reading Process and engage in collaborative strategies that build students’ content-area literacy skills and allow them to access rigorous content. This Community of Practice will empower every educator with the knowledge, strategies, and resources necessary to foster a culture of literacy and gradually release responsibility to students.

Participants will explore the five phases Focused Note-taking and learn how to effectively implement it in their classrooms. The workshop will showcase diverse examples of focused notes, such as 2 and 3 Column notes, consumable book notes, and student-driven notes, allowing attendees to gain practical insights for their teaching practice.

Architects Community of Practice is designed to engage elementary through postsecondary educators in delivering instruction that increases student engagement, provides access to rigorous content, and develops student agency. Educators will learn to empower students to use their own unique voice, background, life experiences, and language to access and produce rigorous and language-rich content to accelerate the development of skills in the four domains of language acquisition: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Through the implementation of language-building routines and scaffolded instruction, educators will explore how they can leverage AVID’s college and career readiness skills by coaching students to nurture and grow their own rigorous academic preparedness, opportunity knowledge, and student agency.

The Creating Engaging and Rigorous Classrooms Community of Practice is designed to engage all elementary through postsecondary educators in cultivating a community of learners by preparing educators, counselors, and site leaders to scaffold student success with rigorous content. This course lays the foundation that allows students to access rigorous coursework and content. Educators will explore the framework of AVID Digital Learning: The 4 A’s® to meaningfully integrate digital strategies and Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR®) student-centered instructional practices to differentiate instruction and increase student agency. Participants will learn strategies to build connected communities through relational capacity activities to foster supportive and equitable learning spaces.

This training is meant for teachers new to WICOR strategies. Time will be spent connecting WICOR strategies to each of the skills emphasized in the 6 C's of Common Core. Participants will learn the Focused Note-Taking system, marking the text reading strategies, Socratic Seminars, Philosophical Chairs, and various ways to support structured collaboration in the classroom. Content Teachers who attend all 12 hours of training will be considered fully AVID trained for certification purposes.

Site Team Conference

This one or two-day conference is designed to support the collaborative and schoolwide work of AVID Site Teams. Each team will work on refining and prioritizing goals from their 2022/23 site plan. Teams will be guided through work with the Coaching and Certification Instrument (CCI) and the Degree of Implementation for each of the four domains: Instruction, Systems, Leadership and Culture. All participants will work to grow the schoolwide impact of the AVID College Readiness System (ACRS). AVID Tutor Training Throughout this training, tutors will receive an overview of their role as an AVID tutor in the tutorial process including a detailed explanation of the Tutorial Request Form (with examples). Tutors will also learn how to facilitate inquiry and be given resources to utilize before, during, and after tutorial sessions with their students, and so much more! Tutors will have post training work to become RIMS AVID Certified tutors.
