As winter settles in, Residential Care Facilities can face unique challenges that require careful planning and proactive management. Behind the scenes, the clinical team play a critical role in ensuring that residents remain safe, warm, and comfortable throughout the colder months. These efforts help protect both residents and staff during a time when vulnerability can be higher. Winter provides an excellent opportunity to assess facility performance and identify areas for improvement. By focusing on preventative maintenance, safety, energy management, and preparedness, we can continue to provide a safe and reliable environment for everyone who uses our facility. Thank you to all staff, contractors, visitors, and residents for your ongoing support and cooperation. Together, we can ensure a safe, comfortable, and successful winter season. We continue to ask visitors to avoid visiting facility if you are unwell. We have placed hand sanitiser at front door to remind visitors of its importance. The clinical team will request consent for all vaccinations to keep our resident safe, We respectfully ask that you return these consents as a matter of urgency. We would also take this opportunity to ask residents to maintain your fluid intake during the colder months. A good fluid intake is as important during the cooler months as during the warmer months. We have also placed the visitor code of conduct at reception. We ask visitors to familiarise yourselves with this to keep our staff safe thus ensuring mutual respect from all parties towards the very people who care for our vulnerable residents. Without these caring individuals, I am sure you all agree, Aged Care would look very different. We appreciate your ongoing support. Warmest winter regards, Brenda Facility Manager

Community Happenings Autumn

What an autumn we have had at Holmwood. We crawled the pubs, rocked around the clock, baked our own pastries and squeezed in a birthday or seven along the way. Here is a look back at a season we thoroughly enjoyed. St Patrick’s Day shenanigans We went all in for St Patrick’s Day this year. We tucked into a delicious buffet lunch, tried our luck at festive games and then, in true Irish spirit, set off on an afternoon pub crawl that had us all in fits of laughter. Everything was green, the craic was mighty and it is a day we will be talking about for a while yet.

What’s cooking, chef? Our new live cooking demonstrations with the catering team have quickly become a favourite on our calendar. Head cook Shannon rolled up her sleeves for fresh, warm, crispy apple turnovers, and we loved putting together our own pastries. The Nutella cookies the week before were another triumph. Between the baking, the stories and the recipe swapping, we always leave with full bellies and a few new tricks up our sleeves. The demos are now a regular fixture, so there is always something delicious on the way.

Music, movement and Friday night vibes Fridays have found a new rhythm with drinks, dancing and live music at our Live Music Fridays. Our workout Wednesdays with Ovarn have taken on a life of their own too. We seem to find our dancing shoes far more often than our exercise gear, so we may need to come up with a new name for the session. The biggest night of the season, though, was our Rock and Roll Night We supervised the shenanigans (also known as decorating) in the lead- up, then put on our glad rags and danced the night away with the Cheek to Cheek Duo and the dancers from Shine Dancing. The music was loud, the dance floor was full and the smiles lasted well into the following week. What a night it was.

Out and about We hopped on the bus for a trip into town and a pub lunch, which proved the perfect way to spend a Wednesday, with delicious food and the best of company. Closer to home, the ladies took over the shed, prepping seeds and seedlings and chatting all things green thumbed. There were plenty of opinions on what should go where, a good deal of chatting and a fine start made on the planting. We are looking forward to watching our garden grow over the months ahead, and we will be sure to share the progress.

Easter surprises Happy hour was interrupted by a very special visitor over Easter, though nobody was heard complaining. The Easter Bunny arrived bearing chocolate and left us all smiling, and it was lovely to have families join us in celebrating the season together. Birthday wishes There was no shortage of cake this season, with birthday celebrations for Robin, Dell, Joan, Ellen, Merlin, Jean and Jan, each marked with cards, singing and plenty of well wishes. A very special mention goes to Marie, who celebrated turning 95 years young with afternoon tea alongside her beloved family. Warmest wishes to each and every one of you. Long lunches and shared tables On International Nurses Day we said thank you to our wonderful nurses in the best way we know how, by sharing a table. Our carvery lunch was full of laughter and stories, and the lemon meringue pie and apple rhubarb crumble were the perfect sweet finish. Mother’s Day gave us the chance to celebrate the mums, grandmothers and carers among us, and all those who have played a motherly role in someone’s life. It was a day of flowers, memories and time spent with the people we love. And to round out the season, we fired up the barbecue for a lunch with residents and staff together. There is nothing quite like good food, easy conversation and a laugh shared over the grill.

Congratulations all round We were proud to congratulate our Employee of the Month winners across the season: Alysa, Sanvir and Denise. We had a hand in nominating each of them, and Denise’s win drew an especially big cheer after she had been runner up more than once. We were also delighted to see a familiar face step into a new role, with Kellie becoming our new Lifestyle Coordinator. Kellie has been part of our care team for the past year and knows us all well, and she is already cooking up new activities built around our own skills and talents. We cannot wait to see what she has in store.

Message from the Clinical Team Suleman

Staying Well This Winter Cold weather brings a few extra things to look after, and our team is on top of all of them. Here’s a gentle reminder of how we keep everyone happy and healthy through the cooler months.

Vaccinations. We are pleased to share that flu, RSV, Shingles and COVID vaccinations have been completed for all residents who consented and we will keep following up gently with families where consent is still to be confirmed. This year carries extra good news: from 15 May 2026, the RSV vaccine became free under the National Immunisation Program for people aged 75 and over, which covers most of our community. People aged 75 and over, including those living in residential aged care, are at the highest risk of severe illness and hospitalisation from influenza, COVID-19 and RSV, so these vaccinations make a real difference. A single dose of the RSV vaccine is currently recommended, with protection expected to last at least two years, while flu is updated each year and a COVID-19 dose is recommended every six months for those aged 75 and over. Keeping warm. Our team keeps residents snug with cosy layers, warm bedding and a favourite blanket always within reach. Staying warm is about far more than comfort research links good thermal comfort at home to better blood pressure, respiratory health and mental wellbeing in older people. Drinking enough. It is easy to forget fluids in winter, so our team encourages regular warm drinks and fluids throughout the day and where possible at night too. A warm cuppa or a glass of water is as good for hydration as it is for the spirits. Eating with the season. Winter brings its own wonderful produce. Seasonal favourites like apples, pears, broccoli and spinach are packed with fibre, vitamins and minerals to help keep everyone going through the colder months and our kitchen leans into hearty soups, casseroles and warming meals that residents love. Gentle movement. Keeping joints mobile and catching a little winter sunshine whenever the day allows. Movement is warmth even gentle activity generates heat, supports circulation and keeps people connected, which is why our lifestyle program keeps everyone moving in ways that feel good.

Message from the Clinical Team

Helping Us Keep Everyone Safe Winter is also cold and flu season. To protect our residents, we kindly ask that visitors with any cough, cold or fever please wait until they are well before visiting and use the hand sanitiser provided when you arrive. These small steps help keep our whole community healthy. A few quiet safety reminders for the season too: in their efforts to stay warm, older people can be at greater risk of small accidents trips over loose blankets, burns from heaters or scalds from hot water. Our team keeps a careful eye on heaters, walkways and water temperatures so that staying cosy never comes at the cost of staying safe. We Are Here for You If you ever have a question about your loved one’s care, health or comfort, please don not hesitate to reach out. My door is always open. Suleman Clinical Care Coordinator

Kellie

Meet the Team

Meet Our New Lifestyle Coordinator – Welcome, Kellie! We are delighted to welcome Kellie into her new role as Lifestyle Coordinator at Holmwood Aged Care. After almost a year as a valued member of our care team, Kellie is excited to bring her enthusiasm, creativity and genuine passion for working with older people into this new position. We sat down with Kellie to learn more about her journey and what she’s looking forward to. Tell us a little about yourself.

“I’m a solo mum to three boys, so life is always busy with sports, driving lessons and everything that comes with mum life! Before having children, I managed a property management department in Mooroolbark. After taking time off to raise my family, I decided on a career change and couldn’t think of a better place to work than aged care. Along the way I’ve also worked as a Disability Support Worker and hold qualifications as a Patient Transport Officer. I’ve now been part of the Holmwood care team for almost a year, and it’s been a wonderful experience.” Why did you choose a career in aged care? “After my second son was born, I knew I wanted a change from real estate and began working as a Personal Care Assistant over 12 years ago. Around that time, my father was in his 80s, and I helped my mum care for him. Seeing the support he received during his respite stays inspired me to pursue a career in aged care. It felt like the right path for me.” What does aged care mean to you? “To me, aged care means providing the very best care possible. My motto has always been to treat every resident the way I would want my own parents to be treated. Our residents have lived extraordinary lives. They have incredible stories, experiences and wisdom that younger generations can only imagine. They deserve to be treated with dignity, respect and exceptional care. That’s exactly what Holmwood strives to provide, and I’m proud to be part of such a caring team.” What do you enjoy most about working at Holmwood? “It’s hard to choose! The staff are amazing—everyone is so supportive and genuinely cares about one another. And, of course, the residents are equally special. Every person has a unique story to tell and such a positive outlook on life. I learn something new from them every day.” What is one of your most memorable moments in aged care? “I don’t know if I could pick just one, but knowing I’ve made a resident’s day a little brighter by sitting and having a chat always sends me home smiling. Sometimes it’s simply receiving a hug or sharing a smile. Those little moments mean everything.” What are you most looking forward to in your new role? “I’m excited to connect with residents in new ways, discover their skills, talents and interests, and work alongside them to create fun, engaging programs that everyone can enjoy. I can’t wait to get started.” What advice would you give someone considering a career in aged care? “Don’t hesitate. Aged care is one of the most rewarding careers you can have. The relationships you build and the difference you make in someone’s life are truly priceless.” We are thrilled to see Kellie step into the role of Lifestyle Coordinator and know she will bring warmth, creativity and compassion to every day at Holmwood. Please join us in congratulating Kellie and making her feel welcome in her new role. We wish her every success as she embarks on this exciting new chapter!

Dear Residents, Families, and Friends, As we welcome the cooler months, I want to take a moment to reflect on the joy that mealtime brings to our community here at Holmwood Aged Care. The enjoyment of meals is not merely about sustenance; it’s a cherished time where we gather, share stories, and create lasting memories. Quality Nutrition at the Forefront We understand that nutrition plays a vital role in your health and well-being. That’s why I’m thrilled to announce that we are in the process of developing a new menu in collaboration with our dedicated dietician. This initiative prioritizes not only the nutritional needs of our residents but also their personal preferences. Your input is invaluable, and we encourage everyone to share their thoughts and favourite dishes. We are looking forward to creating a menu that reflects the tastes and needs of our community. Celebrating Culinary Experiences The past few months have been filled with delightful culinary experiences. We thoroughly enjoyed our BBQs before the weather turned wet and cold, and our first carvery in honour of International Nurses Day was a resounding success! In response to the positive feedback we received, I’m excited to announce that we will host a carvery once a month moving forward. These events will offer not only delicious roast meats but also an array of sides that will cater to various dietary preferences. Additionally, our buffet breakfasts continue to be a hit! The vibrant spread of fresh fruits, hearty cereals, and a selection of cooked options has been well- received. It’s wonderful to see residents enjoying this communal meal, starting their day with a smile. Upcoming Culinary Events In the spirit of celebrating diverse flavours, we will also be introducing an international lunch each month. This event will allow us to explore cuisines from around the globe, giving residents the opportunity to experience new tastes and dishes, while also enjoying familiar favourites. We are committed to ensuring that every meal is not just a necessity but a celebration. Thank you for being a part of our culinary journey here at Holmwood. Your feedback and participation are what make our dining experience truly special. Warm regards, Shannon & the Kitchen Team

Winter Vaccinations Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect against serious illness caused by respiratory viruses such as influenza (flu), COVID-19 and RSV. These illnesses can be severe in otherwise healthy people. In Australia, RSV and influenza seasons can start as early as March, with activity usually peaking between June

and September. Receiving the vaccination before winter gives you the best protection during this high risk period. Please speak with a member of staff for more information regarding the vaccination clinics. Meet the Resident

Judy

Growing up in Adelaide, Judy later moved to Melbourne at the age of nine, where she attended MLC in Glenferrie. Her early years helped shape a life full of adventure, determination, and a deep love of horses. One of her most treasured childhood memories is the day her father came home with her first horse when she was just 10 years old. That special moment marked the beginning of what would become a lifelong passion and an extraordinary journey with horses.

Horses have been at the heart of her life for many years. She spent more than 20 years travelling as a horse judge, visiting places across Canada, the USA, Darwin, South Australia, Western Australia, and Victoria. Through this work, she saw a great deal of the world and built a wealth of experience in the horse community. These days, life is a little quieter, and she enjoys the simple pleasures of reading, spending time with her family, and being with her dogs. Even so, her love for horses remains an important part of who she is. One of the greatest lessons she has learned is the value of patience - both in learning it herself and in teaching it to others. Working with young people and their horses taught her that patience is essential, not only in riding and training, but in life as well. The best advice she has ever received is simple but memorable: “Be careful... horses are dangerous!” It is a lesson grounded in experience and one that has stayed with her over the years. When it comes to music, she has a soft spot for Western music, and Dolly Parton is among her favourites. Her love of this style reflects her lifelong connection to country life and horse culture. Among the places she has travelled, Tasmania stands out as a favourite, describing it as a place where people are truly “horse mad.” She also holds fond memories of her time in the USA and Canada, where she had the opportunity to work with one of America’s best horse trainers. A particularly important influence in her life was the headmaster at MLC in Melbourne, who took her under his wing and looked after her during her school years. She remembers both him and his wife with great warmth and gratitude. Her talents and interests extend beyond horses. She also raced Holden Toranas at Calder Park, Oran Park in Sydney, and Bathurst. As a close friend of Peter Brock, she developed a lasting love of race cars, adding another exciting chapter to an already remarkable life. When reflecting on her proudest achievement, one memory stands above the rest: taking six girls to America to compete and being their trainer. Supporting and guiding them on that journey remains a highlight and a source of great pride.

Her story is one of passion, adventure, mentorship, and resilience - a life shaped by horses, travel, meaningful relationships, and unforgettable experiences. Thankyou for sharing your story Judy.

Autumn Highlights

March 2026

March was a busy and enjoyable month at Holmwood. Our new live cooking demonstrations with Shannon got off to a wonderful start, with residents putting together their own fresh apple turnovers and Nutella cookies. Having the kitchen team hands-on and sharing recipes has been a real hit, and it is now a regular on the calendar. St Patrick’s Day was celebrated with a buffet lunch, festive games, and an afternoon pub crawl that had everyone in great spirits. We also headed out for a leisurely lunch, which as always was a wonderful change of scenery and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Congratulations to Alysa, our March Employee of the Month, who was recognised by peers, residents, and visitors alike. Well done and well deserved.

Autumn Highlights April 2026 April was a month full of celebration, colour, and a night to remember. We marked Easter with a very welcome visit from the Easter Bunny at happy hour - nobody minded the interruption. Our ladies took over the shed to prep seeds and seedlings, chatting away about all things green-thumbed. Friday afternoons continued to bring drinks, dancing, and live music that had everyone on their feet. And we wrapped up the month with a resident and staff BBQ lunch that was filled with laughter, shared stories, and the kind of spontaneous connection that makes our home special. Congratulations to Sanvir, our April Employee of the Month, recognised by peers, residents, and families for his outstanding work ethic and teamwork.

Autumn Highlights

May 2026

May brought a milestone farewell, a warm welcome, and plenty of energy. After ten wonderful years, we said a fond farewell to our beloved Lifestyle Coordinator Stacey, who has been at the heart of so many special moments here at Holmwood - from Rock and Roll Night to Disco Night to Casino Royale and much more. She has promised to visit, and we will hold her to that. International Nurses Day was celebrated with a carvery lunch shared between residents and staff, followed by lemon meringue pie and apple rhubarb crumble. Workout Wednesdays with Ovarn continued to quietly become one of the most popular sessions on the calendar. Congratulations to Denise, our May Employee of the Month.
