CREATIVE CRAFT

Preston College has a long history of providing technical education opportunities to the local community, and T Levels (or Technical Levels) have become an important part of what the College offers. T Levels were first introduced at Preston College in 2021, and since then the College has achieved a pass rate of 96% in 2023, and 97% in both 2024 and 2025. T Levels are designed by employers and taught by educational specialists to support the development of a skilled workforce for the future. They combine classroom-based learning with technical skills development in practical workshops at college, while honing these skills in the workplace. T Levels also provide a route into higher-level study, with many of our students securing degree apprenticeships or places on university degree programmes. Preston College puts the “technical” into T Levels - it is at the heart of what we do. Our industry-experienced tutors are ready to share their expertise, our learning environments are purpose-built to develop technical skills, and we have strong employer partnerships to provide meaningful work experience placements. You will also receive support from our onsite Industry Placement team in finding and securing a suitable placement. Our purpose-built facilities provide learning spaces that prepare students for their placements and next steps, whether that’s employment or university. These facilities include our new digital suite, which offers a modern space for media production, accounting, and digital software development. We also have high-quality science and engineering laboratories, an architecture suite, and a simulated hospital room. All our facilities have been designed to help you gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for success in the workplace. WHAT ARE T LEVELS ?

NATIONALLY RECOGNISED QUALIFICATION

T Levels are qualifications which are co-created with employers that aim to develop young people into the skilled workforce of the future. T Levels combine classroom-based study with work experience in the form of an industry placement. A nationally recognised qualification, T Levels are accepted by universities and employers with certificates providing detailed information on what you have studied and the skills you have gained.

80% CLASSROOM 20% WORK

CLASSROOM-BASED STUDY This part of the qualification consists of knowledge and skills development, with the aim to prepare you for the industry placement and the end point assessments.

WHAT ARE END POINT ASSESSMENTS? End Point Assessments (EPAs) are how T Levels are graded and are the final part of your T Level qualification. There are various assessment methods, which can differ between T Level subjects, however you can typically expect a final exam, an employer-designed project, and assignments.

WHAT ARE T LEVELS ?

WHAT IS AN INDUSTRY PLACEMENT? An industry placement is essentially work experience in the industry. With T Levels this work experience is taken to the next level with industry placements lasting around 315 hours (45 days). The number of hours and how they are scheduled can also differ between T Levels. CAN T LEVELS BE USED FOR ENTRY TO UNIVERSITY? T Levels are worth up to 168 UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) points (the same as three A Levels), meaning they can be used for entry to a range of university degree programmes.

EQUIVALENT TO THREE A LEVELS

The UK Government has a list of Higher Education providers that accept T Levels. This includes Russell Group Universities such as the University of Leeds, the University of Manchester, the University of York and the University of Birmingham.

The majority of a T Level is dedicated to the study of ‘Core Content’ which develops broad sector-based knowledge and a range of transferable skills such as teamwork, communication and problem solving which can be applied to any industry.

T Levels also have occupational specialisms or pathways. Preston College has selected these units to tailor your T Level. You will find details of these in the course pages. There is a dedicated Industry Placement team that can help and advise you on the opportunities available and how to conduct your placement search, prepare for interviews or selection tasks, and check that the placement meets the criteria for your T Level.

Preston College has been offering T Levels from 2021, initially in construction, health and science and has received a fantastic set of results and outcomes for students. Since then, the College has introduced T Levels in Accounting, Business, Engineering, Education and Childcare, and Digital Software Development. Accounting is an important part of any business and you can find career opportunities in any industry. If your career ambition is to become a Chartered Accountant then you’ll need further training after your T Level, but you will progress with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills to build upon at university or in an apprenticeship. Working with children and young people is both rewarding and fulfilling. It’s not simply nursery and childcare providers that offer a range of job roles, there are also opportunities in social care, education, mental health, family support and young offending teams. The T Level in Education and Childcare will help you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the early years sector including the employment opportunities within it. During your industry placement you will apply your knowledge to real-life scenarios and see for yourself the difference you can make.

If teaching is your intended career path, a grade 4 in science is also required. Florence has been completing her industry placement at a local primary school working alongside the Key Stage 1 teaching team, gaining valuable skills and experience for her future studies and career. “During my industry placement I have been teaching phonics, supporting children with special educational needs, taking part in outdoor learning and school trips. I also coach the schools netball team. I am really enjoying the experience and I'm getting a lot out of it.”

CAMERON Cameron joined Preston College from Broughton High School with aspirations to work in the aerospace industry and following completion of his T Level he has secured a degree apprenticeship in manufacturing engineering. “The tutors have been helpful and I have been given a variety of opportunities to progress in engineering. The Health and Social Care industry is vast with the NHS employing more than 1.5 million people for over 350 different roles nationally. It is a rewarding sector and your choice of career can make a real difference. The T Level in Health (Adult Nursing) will cover a broad range of topics to help you develop a strong foundation of knowledge and skills that can be applied to a wide range of roles in the Health Sector. Science is a vast area with hundreds of opportunities across different sectors. You can choose to specialise in a field or use your skills to work in commercial areas. INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS

You will be expected to secure your own industry placement, our industry placement team will be on hand to support you, but you must take responsibility for finding and securing your placement – it is a good learning experience and provides an opportunity for students to develop job searching, interview and employment skills.

T LEVELS ENTRY CRITERIA Students require at least two grade 5s and three grade 4s or above at GCSE, including at least a grade 4 in maths and English. A successful interview is also required. If additional entry criteria is required this is detailed in the course information. CAREERS GUIDANCE Preston College has a team of careers advisors who can help and support you find the right career for you. You will be invited to an interview for your course after you have applied, this will be with one of our team or a tutor. Your interview is the perfect opportunity for you to discuss your ideas or career options. OTHER OPPORTUNITIES AT PRESTON COLLEGE If you feel that T Levels are not right for you, then we have a range of other options for you.
