What A Spectacular Week!

Mr Julian Noad - Head of College

We end the week and the half term in own clothes and all in green, for Woolmer

after my visit.

I may not do his words justice but he reminded me that we do not train our 1st XV rugby team all term to play one match; they have fixtures along the way, as learning opportunities. So too, in our theatre, we wish to provide as many opportunities for as many pupils as possible to experience show time and challenge themselves in a range of styles. I hope that you will join me ‘ on the touchline ’ for as many of these as possible. The faculty of art, design and food put on a wonderful Gala Evening to showcase the House Festival of Arts - more details later in this Bulletin, no doubt. Wyvern House has played host to a wonderful Year 12 supper and an even busier Sixth form parents drinks party. I have also been on my travels to London, to meet with our Methodist trustees, and closer to home to our own Highgrove nursery for a joyful tour and discussion. Donna Kershaw and her team do a magnificent job to provide the very best nursery facility in the region - of that I am even more certain

I mentioned last week our intention to gather feedback on the weekly Bulletin and communications in general. A survey is linked here with expanded information elsewhere in this Bulletin. Please do let us know your thoughts: bad and good. I close with mention the QCC Quiz Night which is on the first Friday back after half term (24 Feb, 7.30pm). The details with a link to signing up your team are here. If you don't have a team you can be allocated to one, there is an option on the link to do this. There are limited spaces and it is already proving popular so do sign up soon. The QCC would also be grateful for any donated items for hampers that they are putting together which will be raffled on the night. If you have any items, please could these be given to Senior or Prep receptions.

Hospital. I hope that we have been able to show our love with generosity to this terrific organisation. Today has also been ‘ Kindness at Queen ’ s ’ day, our nod to St Valentine all prompted by our amazing pupils and an affirmation of the ethos at Queen's. Our fabulous pupils have been gathering gifts for local (possibly lonely) folk in care homes and sharing with each other messages and deeds of kindness. In the words of Mrs N, ‘ it's what we do ’. The drama department has been away to Bristol Old Vic and, of course, this week ’ s Middle School performances of the challenging Mother Courage. I recently enjoyed a longer conversation with Mr Trafford, our Artistic Director, when he made clearer to me his philosophy for performances.

Best Wishes,

Julian

Prep School Mr Henry Matthews - Head of Prep

We have certainly ended the first half term in true QCPS spirit, with plenty packed into the final week. Today we celebrated Edukid, our global charity, with an

A quick note about parking - please could everyone ensure that the spaces available are used correctly with vehicles remaining within the lines. This is important to ensure a safe and smooth drop off and collection. Thank you in advance for your support. Finally a mention of some staffing updates for the months ahead. We say a huge thank you and a sad goodbye to Mrs Thompson today as she heads off to retirement and to enjoy some well - earned time with her family. We held a special assembly in Pre - Prep to celebrate all that she has done for Queen ’ s over the years and gave gifts and messages of thanks. Looking ahead to after half term, I am delighted to say that Mrs Swanson will extend her time with us. Over the coming weeks she will support Mrs Wade ’ s return to work in Year 3 and following this will take over from Mrs Oliver in 5RO for the summer term. I know the children will be pleased to continue working with Mrs Swanson after half term. I wish you all an enjoyable week ahead and I look forward to an exciting second half of term when we return.

enthusiasm about their current topic - focused around the wonderful book 'Clean Up' by Nathan Bryon. They have written some detailed and well - crafted letters to our Queen's College community, persuading their readers to help our oceans. Similarly, Year 1 has also been busy writing persuasive posters to care for our local environment, paying particular attention to the habitats of our local animals. Our Reception class has been busy rehearsing to share their superb learning in their first class assembly. It went down a storm with parents on Thursday afternoon, well done all. We look forward to seeing Year 1 and Year 2’ s assemblies later in the year. The two Parents ’ evenings this week were once again a real success and I know that the chance to talk with staff about progress and achievements has been greatly appreciated. As always, there was a real buzz in the room and I was pleased to hear so many wonderful comments being passed on about the children ’ s work. If there are any parents who did not manage to attend, do contact your child ’ s form lead and they will be happy to arrange a separate appointment. We will be in touch with 6PF and 2SK parents after half term to re - arrange appointments missed due to staff illness.

They performed three pieces with great enthusiasm, skill and passion. The adjudicator gave plenty of praise in the performance summary and special mentions were made about the challenge and complexity of the compositions. We earned a well deserved commended certificate and were placed joint second. A big well done to all involved and thank you to all who supported us on the day. We also had a surprise visit from Mrs Wade, who I am pleased to say is looking well and on the mend and I really think watching the choirs lifted her spirits. Thank you also to Miss Scutt for her incredibly hard work in pulling together a very successful morning. Nursery Round - up Nursery News From Mrs Donna Kershaw - Highgrove Nursery Manager

Highgrove have been focusing on Children ’ s Mental Health week this week, with some lovely activities across the nursery including yoga, mindfulness sessions, discussions and activities about feelings, as well as a relaxing spa afternoon for the Puddleducks children! Puddleducks' focus book this week has been the ‘ Worry Monster ’ which has been a great topic of discussion across the whole week, supporting children to develop their understanding of feelings and how we can

manage them. Tiggywinkles room has been looking at jungle animals this week. They have been listening to jungle sounds, testing their balancing skills with some jungle yoga and enjoying stomping around the garden pretending to be different jungle animals.

Cottontails children have enjoyed their new song board this week. This board allows them to independently choose a song during music time that an adult will sing. The children also enjoyed the slightly warmer weather towards the end of this week in the garden. Lots of fun was had rolling the balls and hoops as well as practising their filling and pouring skills in the sand tray with the buckets and spades.

Nursery School News From Miss Lizzie Hayes - Head of Nursery School

The Nursery School children have been very active this week in their P.E. session and Forest School activities. They enjoyed playing games such as ‘ cat and mouse ’, using scarves for mouse tails which had to be caught by the cats. They also played a ‘ cups and saucers ’ game where they had to turn over discs whilst a second team turned them back again. The session finished with an action card game where they picked a card and everyone had to try to copy the action on it.

In Forest School, the children explored the beautifully detailed creations that this weeks ’ frost had made on the fence and made frost angels on the grass only to find that on the way back they had somehow disappeared! Our forest school walk then took us down to the playing fields where the children practised their long distance running and found some leaf debris which they threw into the air on the count of three to make a ‘ leaf shower ’. They also used the leaves to thread them onto new shoots that were growing on the tree trunks. On the way back, they stopped off at the adventure playground on the Upper to practise their core balance and climbing skills before returning back to Nursery School just in time for lunch.

Prep School Prep Sports Round - up

This half term has been fast and furious and we have crammed in a lot of matches during the last few weeks! Last Friday, Exeter School came for the first of two visits to us in three days with their U11 and 10 girls. There were some great matches with the U10 girls which showed the progression they have made with both their marking, and also their understanding of how the ball needs to move effectively down the court. The U11 had some tougher matches. On Saturday our U11 and 10A team boys hosted Bristol Grammar. A very good hockey school and both teams played well, with the U11 ’ s being more than a match for BGS, whilst the U10 found a very talented team against them but battled well and scored off a short corner. On Monday, Exeter visited for the second time with the U9 and 8 boys, the boys loved the experience and continue to learn a lot from match conditions. On Wednesday, the girls hosted Millfield. Both U10 and U11A teams were focused and committed in their games and played with tenacity. Both matches were very even. The U11B played some great netball and were pleased with their result. The boys played West Buckland and Exeter Cathedral. The U10 ’ s played positively and with great focus in both games and the U11 worked hard in their triangular but needed to capitalise on scoring opportunities. The U11B continue to make progress and each week they are improving their understanding of the game. Sixteen matches in six days! Reminder: Week after half term swim heats for Years 3,4,6 in PE lessons. Please send in kit then after that we will have cross country in PE.

House Meetings The whole Prep school came together on Friday morning for their house meetings. Upper Prep and Pre - Prep children met in their houses for the very first time and discussed a variety of different things. The meetings were co - led by the newly elected House Captains in Year 6. All the children are looking forward to the exciting house events that are planned over the coming months.

Reception Prep School

Reception had their first class assembly this week (Thursday). They have been learning all about people who help us and enjoyed sharing this information to their parents on Thursday afternoon. Reception have created their own paintings around the topic and are really enjoying their Police Station Role Play area - which is a lot of fun!

Year 3

It has been another action packed week of learning in Year 3. In Science we have found out how rockets take off, and even made our own mini rockets. In English we have created our own version of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff' titled 'The Three Dopey Dogs and a Cool Cat' using a story hand to plan our story. We acted out the story, and had an in class mini disco wearing cool caps and sunglasses. Mr Matthews enjoyed joining in with the fun too! Well done to all of the incredible children in Year 3 for your learning this past half term.

Charity Bake sale

Today we celebrated our global charity, Edukid, with an own clothes day and bake sale. Thank you for the many kind donations, both monetary and in cake, we raised £455.33. Today ’ s fundraising has gone a long way to meet our annual commitment to supporting the village of Kampong Takong in Cambodia.

Later in the year we hope to have the chance to speak directly with children in the village and find out all about life in Kampong Takong.

Taunton Music Festival

Queen ’ s at the Taunton Music Festival

Also against strong competition, Rebecca was 2nd equal in the Musical Theatre up to 1965 class and Amelia was commended in the 14 and under Vocal Solo class. Fallon had a great Festival, coming second in the Open Vocal Solo class and winning the Musical Theatre up to 1965 class. Our Prep School musicians enjoyed success too: Elizabeth was awarded a distinction in the 8 and under beginners ’ piano class and our 46 strong Year 5 and 6 Choir received a commendation in the 10 years and under Junior Choirs class, after performing three songs against strong opposition. Overall it has been one of the most successful Festivals to date with Queen ’ s once again showing the calibre of its musicians. Many congratulations to all those who participated and achieved so highly.

It has been a busy fortnight for the musicians of Queen ’ s at the Taunton Music Festival but it has been fantastic for the students to have the opportunity to perform live to an adjudicator and audience. The first week of the festival is dedicated to instrumental music and our players did extremely well in this competitive field. Shao Shen entered three classes, winning his Cello Solo class and coming second in the Beethoven class. Felicity came second in the Grade 5 Piano class and Georgian and Hannah came 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Woodwind Solo category. The second week saw our vocalists in action, singing in classes where the standard was incredibly high. Nevertheless, they rose to the challenge magnificently, matching the quality of their peers in every way. With great performances, Millie won her two classes of Musical Theatre 1960 - 99 and Musical Theatre 2000 onwards, with Jack achieving an impressive 3rd equal in his first Festival outing, also in the Musical Theatre 1960 - 99 category. Aria was in superb voice, achieving an excellent first in the Vocal Solo 1600 - 1900 class as well as winning the Musical Theatre up to 1965 class, and achieving second place in a particularly strong 14 and under Vocal Solo class.

Festival of Creative Arts

School pupils from Years 3 to 13 created over 300 artistic pieces of work for the event

Over 250 people celebrated creativity at Queen ’ s College at the first Festival of Creative Arts Gala Showcase Evening this

and each pupil exhibited their own unique interpreta- tion of the brief.

The school were joined by the Mayor of Taunton, the Taunton Chamber of Commerce, a number of national and international artists and designers (from Taunton to Ukraine), a national premier performance racing en- gineer and designer from Ariel (who brought an Ariel Ace motorbike into school), award - winning chefs from across the South West (including Marriott Executive Chef Richard Hunt from the largest hotel in the South West, Chef Andrew Swann Trencherman ’ s Award Best Chef nominee from the Castle in Taunton and local foodie Steve Ashworth Amateur Chef of the Year) plus the Daily Telegraph ’ s Food Critic, Food Author and tele- vision ’ s BBC MasterChef Judge William Sitwell, plus pu- pil prizes from South West Michelin Star Chef Michael Caines MBE from Lympstone Manor.

week. The reception saw hundreds of visitors, friends, and families being joined by a dozen high - profile VIPs.

School pupils from Years 3 to 13 created over 300 artistic pieces of work in a huge variety of media from food, plastics, wood and card to more traditional ceramics, photography, textiles, paint, pastel and pencil. Senior School Sports Round - up

Football On Tuesday Mr Bishop and Mr Bennett took eight Year 7 and 8 footballers to take part in a tournament at Castle School. Last week Year 9 and 10 went to a similar tournament. This weeks team certainly lived up to last week ’ s outing. Playing against 3 teams from Castle and 2 teams from Bishop's Foxes we again went unbeaten. With 4 wins and 1 draw. The team played some fantastic football, ultimately outplaying the opponents and scoring some beautifully worked team goals. Congratulations to the whole team, who were led expertly by captain Ollie L and vice captains Alvaro and Aiden. The future for this group certainly looks promising! Hockey The 2nd XI faced Wells away, and some excellent hockey. The team have a real cohesive feel about them and were very supportive of each other. They created several opportunities but were missing the finishing touch, and the Wells keeper made some excellent saves. Wells came out on top after some explosive counter attacking hockey and deserved the win, but our players put in a great account of themselves. Netball

A top class performance from the 1st VII as they took on local rivals, King's College. The team was fierce in attack, moving the ball well in and around the D. Millie, Edie and Claire dominated the D and took great passes close to the post. Excellent mid - court work and defence in the D. Osa and Jen made a number of great interceptions and rebounds. This performance set Queen ’ s up for the next match, against West Buckland, and it was another fantastic performance from the 1st VII. Structured passing, timely runs and some great turnovers made for an exciting match. Jen was Mr White's player due to her tenacity in defence and in the mid court. Millie was made MVP by the West Buckland team.

Canteen Cuisine Showcased in Cookery Classes

As part of teaching and learning about Carbohydrate Macronutrients, our GCSE classes were joined again by Holroyd Howe Executive Chef Jordan Bradley and visiting Holroyd Howe Nutritionist Molly Wisbey from London in our Food and Nutrition classes this week. cooking demonstrations and nutrition class was organised as part of a joint initiative between school canteen caterers Holroyd Howe and Food and Nutrition. The joint interactive

The nutrition lesson looked at how Carbohydrates fit into a well - balanced healthy diet, the benefits, and what happens with excess, and deficiency in the body, looking in particular at the difference between complex and simple carbohydrates including non - starch polysaccharides. The first lesson was followed by a wonderful cooking demonstration lesson of bite - sized treats with practical food preparation of different flavoured energy balls from Jordan .

Music Feature: DJ Senior School

One of the reasons music is such a brilliant activity for developing the brain is the multiple tasks that must be performed to create music; read the music, translate that into movement to create sound and monitor that sound and make miniscule adjusts based on aural perception (and that is a very basic description!) Learning any musical instrument will develop the brain in this manner. One of the newest offerings from the Music Department is DJ lessons; clearly a new branch of discipline, nevertheless it still encompasses these skills requiring real attention to detail here is our DJ teacher Mr Powell to explain more .

The Food of Love This Valentine's With Valentine ’ s Day next week the Year 10 pupils used the opportunity to push the culinary boat out with some romantic pizza roses. These beautifully crisp warm shaped bread roses were filled with a rich red homemade tomato reduction sauce, and finished with a shiny crust to each petal and topped with a little cheese - they were the perfect way to spread the love! Mr Mann, Head of the Faculty of Art, Design, and Food has included his recipe for Valentine's Pizza Roses for you to try at home over the holidays together with his recipe for sweet Valentine's Apple Rose tarts (please

forward him any of your photos of your Valentine's bakes for House Points jom@queenscollege.org.uk).

Tea Time Concert

What a fabulous way to round off this half of the term! At the end of a busy Festival week, parents and students were treated to a wonderful Tea Time concert in the OMR.

We were lucky that this particular concert has a wide variety of instruments and styles to enjoy. Opening the concert was Archie Wade with a strident performance of a Trumpet Voluntary by Greene. With a change of mood but no less engaging was Charlotte with a stylish performance of Cumbia Deliciosa by Ortiz on the harp, followed by Sam with a subtle rendition of Mot d ’ amour by

Elgar. Maryam played the well known Passacaglia by Handel with great panache, followed by a lively violin duet, Por Una Cabeza by Gardel, played by Fallon and our violin teacher, Mrs Alex Ennis. Finishing proceedings was our Head Girl Pippa , playing the Waltz from Suite Antique by Rutter with consummate skill. A very enjoyable concert that was enjoyed by all who attended; many thanks and congratulations to our performers. More photos on Flickr.

Mother Courage The play is one of the greatest political fables, satirizing the evils of war

As well as suiting the style of the piece, this also meant that lots of our students had the opportunity to play a leading role and display their incredible talents. The performance really showed how well the cast worked together as a team, and once again the student stage crew and lighting operators joined forces to complete a thoroughly professional approach to stagecraft. 'Mother Courage and Her Children' really showed how well Years 7, 8 and 9 can master powerful dramatic acting. But for those who prefer their entertainment light, the good news is that next up for this age group is the supercalifragilistic 'Mary Poppins' in the Summer term!

The 'World Of Wonders' Season of stage shows this year visits masterpiece plays from around the world to allow our student performers and audiences to experience a wide range of stories and perspectives. Years 7, 8 and 9 have spent the last term exploring one of the great German dramatic works, (albeit written by Bertolt Brecht while he was living in exile in the United States): 'Mother Courage and Her Children'. The play is one of the greatest political fables, satirizing the evils of war: the title character continues to profit from her mercenary trade even when she is warned that it will have a terrible personal cost for her family, and the audience is shown exactly what will happen to those who make such a choice. This is certainly a sophisticated topic, but the cast and crew of 30 students have really risen to the challenge! Brecht as a director developed a very distinctive performance style, known as 'Verfremdungseffekt', ("audience distancing" or "emotional detachment"), to encourage the audience members to think with their heads rather than their hearts - the techniques included actors playing multiple roles, the use of placards with slogans and direct address across the footlights. Our production included all these features and more! In our cast, 3 performers played Yvette. 4 played Eilif, 5 played Kattrin, and 9 played Mother Courage herself!

Theatre Trip by Freya

On Wednesday, Miss Ridley took Year 12 Drama to the Bristol Old Vic. We set off on our adventure listening to some music in our minibus and soon after we arrived in Bristol, where we walked to a restaurant called Franco Manca, where some delicious pizza was eaten! After our food, we headed off to the theatre and met Mrs Bell.

In preparation for an international competition in March, the Sixth Formers took part in a fantastic and unique learning opportunity joining the Chairman and Judging panel from the national 'Craft Guild of Chefs' (founded in 1885 as the organisation of all the country's leading chefs) at South Devon Culinary College. Ahead of the 'International Salon Culinaire' in March (the world's top culinary competition of gastronomic skills for over a hundred years) the UK 'Craft Guild of Chefs' ran a South West set of skill challenges on restaurant skills, baking skills, main course skills, and vegan skills from the best young chefs across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, and Dorset up to Bristol at South Devon College nominated by Chefs and catering colleges across the South West. The Chairman Chef Wayne Harris offered our pupils the chance to get involved with judging and also to be involved in the London finals in late March part of the International Salon Culinaire with a whole raft of celebrity chefs, alongside former Chef Le Gavroche and judge BBC MasterChef Chef Monica Galetti. Following this the sixth formers had a tour of the professional kitchen's met more chefs and saw the student chefs preparing for competition dishes. "It was a unique and hugely rewarding culinary high - skills learning experience for our pupils", said Mr Mann, Head of the Faculty of Art, Design, and Food, adding "we look forward to having multi - award - winning international Chef Wayne Harris Chairman of the national 'Craft Guild of Chefs' join us at Queen's College in the very near future".

We were lucky enough to sit right at the front row and had an excellent view of the actors up close. The play we watched was called ‘ Drive Your Plough Over The Bones Of The Dead ’ performed by theatre company ‘ Complicite ’. It was performed in a style of Physical Theatre (which is a style that emphasises lots of movement to create a visually stunning piece), where a character called Janina, who is an animal enthusiast, narrates a story about multiple murders each clued with evidence of animals revenge for their slaughter of wildlife. The atmosphere was rather eerie at some points and then crisp the next. It was enjoyed by all!

Charity Day - Munopa Year 13

A Slow Crash

On Wednesday we were pleased to Welcome Iain Mahony into the College to speak to our pupils in years 11 - 13.

His talk, aptly entitled ‘ A slow crash ’, outlined his story from young teen at a prestigious private school through to drug addiction and rehab by the age of 32. His story was one of small decisions that led him down this particular path but central to the story was his struggle to feel accepted, cope with bullying at school and difficulties at home. A lack of support and his inability to search for help when he needed it most meant that his self destruction continued until he came close to ending his life. He finally sought help at the age of 32 and spent 3 months in rehabilitation. His message was clear, he was not there to tell pupils what not to do, but to ensure they were aware of what his life had been and the amount of time he had wasted. His emotional and honest story encouraged pupils to think carefully about their choices and the people they surround themselves with, as well as not being afraid to seek support when it was needed.

This week we celebrated our third house charity day of the school year with Woolmer, the house came together to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children ’ s Hospital Charity (GOSH). Louis as head of house planned an own clothes day where everyone was encouraged to wear a touch of green. Alongside this was a bake sale and a guess the teacher from the baby photo. The tutor groups enjoyed guessing who was who and can agree it was actually pretty difficult at times. All the money raised from these activities will go to help research into childhood cancer and rare conditions as well as supporting facilities at the hospital. It was a successful day for the Queens community as we managed to help people in need of the amazing care that GOSH provides.

Franky Year 12

Franky in Year 12 has made it through to the English National cross country championships in Nottingham in March. Congratulations Franky.
