Inter-Service Scramble Championship The Inter-Service Scramble Championship will be on Saturday, July 9 at the Arlington course. The format is a four-person team scramble and will begin with an 8:00 AM shotgun start. The field is limited to the first eight (8) teams from each service so get your online entry in early. Online entries open at 7:00 AM on June 9, 2016. For complete tournament information and to enter click here . Purpose of a Golf Handicap The purpose of the USGA Handicap System is to make the game of golf more enjoyable by enabling golfers of different abilities to compete on an equitable basis. The system provides fair Course Handicaps for players regardless of ability, and adjusts a player’s Handicap Index up or down as one’s game changes. At the same time, it disregards high scores that bear little relation to the player’s potential ability and promotes continuity by making handicaps continuous from one playing season or year to the next. A basic premise underlies the USGA Handicap System, namely that every player will try to make the best score at each hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played, and that the player will post every acceptable round for peer review. Posting scores in person immediately following the round at the course where the round is played is the preferred way to expose scores to peer review. This method of posting shall be used whenever possible. Scores can also be posted via the Internet at www.vsga.org (at the middle of the Home Page) or at www.ghin.com (see “Post Score” at top of page). There is also a GHIN app available for your smart phone. Scores can be posted year round, weather permitting. Temporary ratings are established during the winter months at each course. A USGA Handicap Index compares a player’s scoring ability to the scoring ability of an expert amateur on a course of standard difficulty. A player posts scores along with the appropriate USGA Ratings to make up the scoring record. A Handicap Index is computed from no more than 20 scores plus eligible Tournament Scores in the scoring record. It reflects the player’s potential because it is based upon the best scores posted for a given number of rounds, ideally the best 10 of the last 20 rounds. A USGA Handicap Index travels well from course to course, as well as from one set of tees to another set of tees on the same course. A player’s Handicap Index determines the number of strokes a player receives depending upon the length and difficulty of the course being played.

Penalties for Failure to Properly Post Scores

A penalty score can be posted to a player’s scoring record by the Handicap Committee for one or more of the following reasons: •Failure to post a tournament round within seven (7) days of the tournament or no later than the 14th or the last day of the month. Multiple failures to post a score as a tournament may result in suspension of tournament participation for 30 days •Failure to post a non-tournament round by the 14th or last day of the month •Failure to adjust a score for Equitable Stroke Control •Posting a score higher or lower than recorded on the scorecard A penalty score is a score posted by the Handicap Committee that is equal to the lowest or highest handicap differential in the player’s current scoring record. If a golfer receives three (3) penalty scores, he/she may have their handicap withdrawn for 60 days. This will prevent participation in ANY event which requires a validated handicap.

Did You Know? From the earliest days of Army Navy Country Club, the goal was to increase the number of holes at the Arlington campus to 27 and possibly 36 holes. In late 1931, the Club initiated an effort to add another 18 holes to the original Newman designed course. Efforts in this regard advanced to actual clearing of land until August 1932 when work halted due to the “depletion of funds”. In October 1933 the Club began seeking the services of a golf course architect. Two months later the Club engaged Herbert Strong to design the 27 hole course that is the basis of today’s course. Work commenced in 1934. For additional information, click here . To contact the ANCC Foundation, visit anccfoundation.org or call 1-888-506-ANCC (2622).
