IP, Cascades Announce Board Price Increases

Fosber Makes ‘Quantum’ Leap In North America BY JACKIE SCHULTZ

Memphis, Tennessee based International Pa- per last week announced a $60/ton domestic linerboard and medium price increase and Kingsey Falls, Quebec, Canada based Cas- cades announced increases of $60/ton for linerboard and $70/ton for medium. The announcement follows earlier re- ported increases by Packaging Corporation of America, which announced a $70/ton in- crease and Greif, which announced a $50/ton increase for all grades of uncoated recycled paperboard, a $70/ton increase on recycled and semi-chemical medium, and a $60/ton in- crease on recycled linerboard. All increases are effective at the beginning of March 2021. With this issue, Board Converting News has adjusted the Average Containerboard Prices on its page 3 chart by $50/ton for Kraft Liner and Semi-Chem Medium to reflect the increases announced by major paper suppli- ers late last year. As the chart states, average prices are tabulated from prices PAID by var- ious sources in North America and are only intended for purposes of reference. They do not connote any commitment to sell any ma- terial at the indicated average.

After considerable investment and R&D efforts between Quantum Cor- rugated and the Fosber Group, Fosber America is now ready to launch a new version of the Quantum corrugator in North America. The new line is being marketed as “Quantum by Fosber.” Introduced in 2015,

there are currently about a dozen Quantum installations worldwide, in- cluding one in the U.S. It was recently updated after the Fosber Group acquired 60 percent of Agnati and established a new company called Quantum Corrugated. The announcement last year of Fosber’s intent to acquire Agnati drew keen interest considering both manufacturers offer full line corru- gators. However, the redundancy stops at the Quantum, according to Jeff Pallini, President of Fosber America. “We saw a real future for the Quantum technology,” he says. Fosber offers three lines of what are considered traditional cor- rugators for high- and mid-volume box plants. The Quantum doesn’t compete with those lines. Instead it serves the specialized markets of microflute corrugated and high-end graphics, and soon will have lami- nating capabilities. Key sections of the machine were re-engineered to include Fos- ber’s proven technology while keeping Quantum’s patented innova- tions to preserve its niche appeal. The new line now includes Fosber Fosber America recently completed a 40,000-square-foot expansion of its headquarters in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE

Design & Production

Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate

Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.

This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.

The system’s main advantages are as follows:

• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. The system uses small pneumatic cylinders in order to achieve a “soft touch.”

6. Gap Control 7. Curved Plate 8. Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. The rolls are mounted into a frame, which is actuated by means of two pneumatic cylinders. P oductivity Issu —Double Kiss Bonding

Advantage Corrugated & Packaging Invests In Third Kolbus Machine With more than a decade in business, Advantage Corru- gated & Packaging, a Hopkins, Minnesota manufacturer and distributor of boxes, is continuing its expansion and growth with a third machine from Kolbus America in three years—an AutoBox AB 300. The firm, which caters to cus- tomers who need cost effective, short and medium run manufacturing for their specially-sized corrugated ship- ping containers, industrial packaging, and point-of-sale, signed the contract in December 2020 and will install its newest investment in early February 2021. Advantage has assembled a diversified base of cus- tomers within the state from the manufacturing industry, to printers, and corrugated brokers. “We offer a wide ar- ray of capabilities and solutions to our customers who require cardboard corrugated packaging,” says Dave Po- boisk, President of Advantage Corrugated. “Our team of employees manufactures everything from small boxes to extra-large boxes many of which do not fit the capabilities of our competition. The new Kolbus machine has the abil- ity to run as large a corrugated sheet as our raw material manufacturer can produce.” The new Kolbus AutoBox AB 300 machine provides Advantage with the flexibility and versatility to produce more than 100 different box styles from one panel folders

to extra large containers. It is the only machine on the mar- ket that can set itself in less than one minute from one job to the next. Operators appreciate its user-friendliness due to its capability of automatically changing box styles and sizes with a touch screen. No tooling is necessary; Advan- tage operators just input the job that they want to run and the AutoBox sets itself in seconds. “Due to the wide variety of box jobs that come to us, we rely on the Kolbus AutoBox to enable us to turn a special- ized job from layout to conversion in a very timely manner,” says Poboisk. Advantage purchased its newest AutoBox machine in December 2020 after having installed the Boxer and Pro-Gluer in 2017. While the firm has seen an upward tra- jectory since it opened its doors in 2009, the current pan- demic and the growth of e-commerce has certainly boost- ed box production due to the need of manufacturers to utilize corrugated boxes to send products. “We didn’t look at any other manufacturers,” says Po- boisk. “Kolbus America has been a wonderful partner. Everyone on its staff—from the sales, technicians, order- ing, and training---are good people. When we need some- thing, they jump. When we have a question, the support staff quickly answers it. Kolbus is a very ethical, receptive operation that has been one of the important reasons that our business keeps growing. Special thanks go out to our customers, employees, vendors, and sales people. With- out them, this purchase could not have been made.”

Fosber: ‘Quantum’ Leap (CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 )

The Quantum is available in 70- and 98-inch widths and runs 1000 feet per minute. “It’s all about quality, specialty

papers and the uniqueness of the fluting,” Pallini says. “Our sales team is going to be calling on people they haven’t called on before because we didn’t have an answer for this in the past.” He acknowledges that the Quan- tum is not a corrugator for the mass

roll stands, splicers, Compact dry end and Syncro corru- gated control system. The computer-based corrugator control system is Fosber’s signature product that is now standard on all Quantum corrugators. Syncro uses intuitive touch screens and machine signals to display production information. It can provide control, monitoring, information display, data entry, diagnostics and centralized operation for a complete corrugator or individually on the dry end or wet end. “The key to the Quantum is the singlefacer, glue ma- chine and twinfacer,” Pallini explains. “Those wet end components are Quantum technology and that has not changed. The difference between Fosber corrugators and the Quantum is the section that forms the flutes. What will give customers a competitive advantage is that Quantum section.”

Jeff Pallini

market. “We sell five, six, seven complete corrugators in the U.S. a year. We might sell two or three Quantums.” Existing customers in Europe are producing corrugated board for high quality flexo post print, and pre-printed top liners to achieve near litho quality and several plants are producing sheets for single pass digital print. “For plants that focus on the production of microflute sheets, direct offset printing on corrugated board or specialize in the use

of light papers, the Quantum is the perfect machine,” Alberto Brivio, Managing Director of Quantum Corrugated, says. “In digital printing, we know that the qual- ity of board being run on the printer is para- mount,” he continues. “To this end, the Quan- tum ensures not only the finest flutes can be run at speed, but also some of the flattest sheets available in the market. Flat board cre- ates an optimal printing surface and thanks to our process, there is no direct contact with the sheet during formation, meaning no slip or pressure marks on the outer liner.” Growth Markets Fosber’s research to determine the need for a machine like the Quantum in North America revealed a niche in the high graph- ics, microflute and narrow web markets. “There’s not a lot of good narrow web ma- chines out there right now and there’s plenty of narrow paper, and there are also a lot of people testing microflutes in order to get into other markets,” Pallini says. “Our market anal- ysis brought several things to the surface and one of them was that the ability to produce microflutes efficiently to compete with other types of substrates is limited.” He says the Quantum’s low and consis- tent heat requirement at the singlefacer and twinfacer are key to producing high quality microflute, lights weights and coated board. The additional enhancements with Fosber technology opens up even more market op- portunities. Brivio agrees. “This latest version of the Quantum sets a high bench mark. We have reduced the amount of energy it needs to run by over 30 percent and at the same time, we

tum line, Fosber America recently completed a 40,000-square-foot expansion of its head- quarters in Green Bay. This included exterior renovations, the addition of a new bay on the production floor for the Quantum line and a new training center. “We’re super excited about the training center,” Pallini says. “We built a very elabo- rate center with the latest AV equipment and virtual training capabilities. SUPPLIER REPORTS 2021 (PART 3) AMERICAN CORRUGATED MACHINERY Indian Trail, North Carolina: Patrick Szany reports, “2020 appeared to be another year of growth and challenges

later this year. SECO uses name brand components for all electrical and mechanical parts. The customer selects their preferred OEM from a ‘Machine Check List,’ every- thing from anilox rolls to glue systems. Please contact us for more information on the quality, and cost effectiveness of these machines. “ACM sold six Torosian Tech Post Gluers in 2020. These machines are capable of running Straight Line, Lock Bot- tom, and Tray Configurations. Machines can be ordered in various conditions from ‘good running’ to ‘totally rebuilt’ with a one-year warranty. “ACM had great success selling the RJE Magellan line of Box Makers in 2020, with continued success coming into 2021. There are two models: the LD (non tri-wall), and the tri-wall capable HD. These machines are ideal for short run, large boxes. The machine sets up in two minutes and can be operated by a single employee. Die cutting and 2-color printings are available features for this machine. The Magellan has filled a niche for companies looking to capitalize on short run, quick turnaround opportunities. Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

The Measure of Quality.

Easy on the starch, please. If starch costs are taking you to the cleaners, let Accora glue sets help close the gap. Precision stainless steel & ceramic rolls let you choose the right amount of glue.

Don’t settle for lower-quality board at higher cost. If your starch invoices get bigger as your glue sets get older, or curling or washboarding are new normals — or if you now simply accept a wider gap as “just the way it is,” don’t put off looking at Apex Accora glue sets . Unlike chrome-plated applicator rolls, Accora’s hardened AST stainless steel rolls never flake or corrode. We take extra quality-control steps in our applicator roll engraving process to ensure equivalent cell volume throughout. Accora doctor rolls feature super-dense, low- porosity ceramic that maximizes resistance to scoring and corrosion. Accora is certified and approved by all major OEMs. But because we use premium materials and methods on our rolls and journals, Accora exceeds OEM standards for T.I.R. tolerances. We minimize T.I.R. down to 0.0005” for the tightest controlled gap . Results? How about faster speeds and easier clean-up ? Longer roll life . Job repeatability . Flatter board and fewer rejections . And potential starch/energy savings . Discover what the leading box manufacturers already know: Accora makes quality board easier. Request a quote today for your new or refurbished set.

our reliable and proven FeedMAX platform, the digital print prefeeder feeds the board into the digital printer on the long dimension and is capable of either inverting or not inverting the board. Additionally, two lanes of board can be fed simultaneously into the digital printer, effective- ly doubling its throughput. “Alliance is committed to continuing to find ways to improve the efficiency of our machines, thereby increas- ing box plant throughput. We plan to introduce more pro- cess-improving solutions in 2021. “We continue to maintain our focus on productivity-en- hancing technical innovations, such as bottom sheet sys- tems that use vision technology to scan random-size dun- nage and automatically compute the number of sheets required to ensure exact placement of each sheet and obtain the coverage needed. Our patented TEDD sheet deceleration technology in the UltraSTACK RDC stacker/ palletizer permits running at full speed without a shingle, allowing exact bundle counts without a feed interrupt. Our J&L Mark5 XT jumbo series specialty folder gluer can fold and glue boxes up to 210 inches wide, while our 2-piece box option allows box makers to produce jumbo-size box- es using standard-size rotary die cutters. This system can also fold and glue multi-caliper boxes, economically plac- ing the board thickness and strength where needed. “With more than 15,000 installations around the world, our team of engineers offers technical expertise across the U.S., Latin America, Europe, and beyond—backed by a robust customer care staff who provide dedicated installa- tion, training, service, parts, and other support. “Alliance’s mission is to build trust and create value for our customers, seek new ways to innovate, employ posi- tive communication, and operate with integrity.” Call (509) 535-0356.
