FROM THE FAMILY

Timeless beauty. Refined luxury. Discriminating style. Attention to detail. Fine craftsmanship. de Boulle Diamond & Jewelry prides itself on these hallmarks. For more than 38 years, our family has served thousands of customers, worldwide. Thanks to them and you, we have built a reputation as one of the preeminent, family owned fine jewelers in North America.

Indeed, de Boulle is all about family.

Today, de Boulle truly is a family business. With the second generation of Boulles on board — daughter Emma and son Nick — the family is building the de Boulle legacy. Family also includes our teams — many of whom have been with de Boulle for more than 20 years. Our strong sense of family is all-encompassing — even when we select our partners. One example? de Boulle is proud to work with renowned Swiss watchmaker Patek Philippe. The pairing is perfect, as de Boulle and Patek Philippe are both family owned companies and de Boulle’s vision aligns perfectly with Patek Philippe’s, in that both represent the epitome of precision, beauty, craftsmanship and luxury. Speaking of families, we are thrilled to have supermodel Niki Taylor return as the face of de Boulle. It takes a strong and confident woman to convey the essence of our everyday wear and our High Jewelry Collection. Wait till you see her: Adorned in an array of colored gemstones and diamonds, our brand ambassador radiates and sparkles. We are delighted to present to you the 2021-2022 edition of our beautifully crafted de Boulle Magazine. We hope you are inspired by the pages ahead.

THE GLOW UP

d

e Boulle Diamond & Jewelry, a family owned business for nearly 40 years, with locations in Dallas and Houston, will move to a new and expanded location in Houston’s River Oaks District. Dedicated showrooms within the sumptuous new store will be designed by luxury Swiss timepiece manufacturers Rolex and Patek Philippe. This will be the first time that Rolex is available at de Boulle Houston. “From the day we opened in the River Oaks District, we’ve been accepted by the community,” says Denis Boulle, owner and CEO of de Boulle. “We feel incredibly grateful for the trust and patronage of our clients. The new store will better meet their needs and interests by featuring two of the world’s most revered Swiss watch brands, and it will give us more opportunities to showcase exceptional pieces.” Says Lisa Jones, president of Patek Philippe USA: “Patek Philippe and de Boulle are two family owned companies with shared values. We are delighted to see de Boulle expand their presence in Houston. Houston is a growing and sophisticated watch market. Having been in partnership with de Boulle for 30 years, we are confident in their dedication to further educating their local and loyal clientele on fine Swiss mechanical timepieces, while continuing to provide the best possible Patek Philippe experience.” The new store will encompass approxi-

mately 3,500 square feet and will be divided into three distinct spaces: the de Boulle Collection, featuring an assortment of one-of-a-kind handcrafted and beautifully designed fine jewelry; and the two individual Rolex and Patek Philippe show- rooms, each with private suites for client appointments. The heart of the store is a shared hospitality lounge, which will connect the spaces and feature a dou- ble-height, stone-clad wall and an emer- ald-cut illuminated ceiling. Clients will be welcomed there in a beautiful environment, and perhaps enjoy a drink. “We strive to elevate the shopping experience for every visitor to our stores,” says Nicholas Boulle, president of de Boulle Houston. “But, most importantly, we try to make our clients feel at home when shopping with us.” The new store is slated to open in early 2022. “de Boulle’s expansion marks an important milestone for the River Oaks District,” says Rosalind Schurgin, Co-Founder and the Chief Executive Officer of The Festival Companies. “The evolution of their brand is reflective of the Boulle family’s expertise in luxury timepieces, diamonds and fine jewelry. The addition of two showrooms — dedicated to iconic Swiss brands Rolex and Patek Philippe — provides the Houston consumer with more options to experience luxury in a personalized way, only accessible through the River Oaks District.”

Opening in early 2022, de Boulle’s bigger, bolder Houston store will include individual environments for two of the world’s finest watchmakers — and more of everything

COLORFUL CHARACTERS Diamonds come in every color of the rainbow— so why do most people think of them as being white? Because almost all of them are. Here, a primer on the rare, ravishing, colored stones known as fancy diamonds— and what wearing them can mean. THE VAULT

JONQUIL FLOWER 51 brilliant-cut yellow diamonds have all been sourced from the Zimmi mine in West Africa and are matching in color and cut. Di- amonds from the Zimmi mine have a very deep, warm, lively and vivid yellow (jonquil) color. Zimmi has become synonymous with this color.

At our core, Meridian’s primary objective is to create advanced healthcare settings for specialty and emergency care for our pets. We are incredibly proud to partner with Operation Kindness which has created an exceptional environment to shelter homeless companion animals in need of a loving home.

F ancy diamonds are extremely rare — only one in 10,000 has a noticeable color — and excep- tionally beautiful. Yellow, pink, red, green, blue, brown: There is a diamond to match every preference, mood and meaning. But how do these brilliant beauties happen? Impurities, elements or structural defects in chemical composition — all considered imperfections in other gems — are precisely what make fancy diamonds extraordinary. The rarer and more vivid the color, the higher the diamond’s value will be. Stunning and dramatic, these gems are miracles of nature. Look for a fancy diamond that is richly, evenly colored. Unlike with white diamonds, a great body color is more important than clarity. Fancy diamonds are cut a bit differently, too. The goal is to maximize their unusual color instead of their flashes of light. And, something to consider: Fancy colored diamonds are a phenomenal way to store wealth in a highly por- table form — with the marvelous benefit of making for a stunning piece of jewelry. Explore how each diamond is formed— and all the meanings they possess.

Y E L L O W Yellow diamonds are found in most diamond mines around the world. The biggest sources are South Africa, Australia, Canada and Russia. Yellow diamonds are caused when an atom of nitrogen replaces a carbon atom in the diamond’s crystal structure during its development in the earth, modify- ing light and absorbing the blue part of the visible spectrum. Thus, the greater the amount of nitrogen in the right patterns the stronger the saturation of color. de Boulle has a history of crafting yellow diamond masterpieces. Take for example our High Jewelry Collection 35th Anniversary Ring featuring a more-than-18-carat natural fancy yellow diamond framed in delicate pavé. WHAT THEY MEAN Joy and happiness. B L U E Blue diamonds are caused when an atom of boron replaces an atom of carbon in the diamond’s crystal structure during its growth in the earth. Depending on the amount of boron and its position in the crystal lattice, a blue diamond can appear as pale blues, like the sky, or deep blues, like the ocean. Most blue diamonds come from the Cullinan mine in South Africa. WHAT THEY MEAN Purity. G R E E N Diamonds which are green owe their appearance to naturally occurring radiation, which altered their atomic structure eons ago deep within the earth. The strength of the natural radia- tion and the duration of exposure determine the level of sat- uration. Exceedingly rare, green diamonds are found in var- ious mines in Africa, Brazil, Guyana and Venezuela. WHAT THEY MEAN Nature, abundance and prosperity.

7.71 ct. fancy intense yellow square-cut diamond ring, flanked by two rectangular side stones totaling more than 1 carat. 3.32 ct. fancy vivid blue emerald-cut diamond is held aloft by 20 pavé diamonds totaling 1.0 ct. and set in white gold. 3.50 ct. fancy vivid yellowish green asscher-cut diamond, the largest of its kind, highlighted by 1.33 and 1.51 ct. fancy intense pink asscher-cut diamonds.

O R A N G E The element nitrogen — the same element responsible for color in yellow diamonds — causes a stone’s unique orange color when combined with other anomalies within the crystal structure. The level and position of nitrogen determines the strength and pu- rity of color. All orange diamonds are fiery and beautiful; ones with no modifying of secondary color are extremely rare. WHAT THEY MEAN Strength, power and confidence. P I N K Natural pink diamonds gain their appearance from subtle align- ment changes in a stone’s carbon atoms, known as atomic dis- tortion or lattice distortion. The arrangements of the atoms in the crystal from the heat and pressure in the earth determine the color a stone becomes. This is the same structural anomaly that causes a diamond to appear red, purple or brown. Most pink dia- monds today came from the Argyle mine in Australia, which has now been depleted. WHAT THEY MEAN Passion and power. R E D Red diamonds — the rarest of the fancy colored diamonds — get their appearance from subtle alignment changes in the carbon at- oms of the diamonds. They mostly exist in sizes below one carat. The source of most of the red diamonds today was the Argyle mine in Australia, which has now been depleted. Insider FYI: The largest documented red diamond was 5.11 carats. WHAT THEY MEAN Love — of course.

3.01 ct. fancy vivid orange, round- cornered square modified brilliant diamond surrounded by emerald- cut diamonds.

1.24 ct. fancy intense purplish pink diamond flanked by four emerald-cut diamonds (0.99 cts.) and pavé diamonds. Argyle Prima 1.20 ct. pear-cut, fancy red diamond.

KAREN’S PICKS MY FAVORITE THINGS

COVER GIRL t takes a strong and confident person to convey the essence of our de Boulle collections of jew- elry — pieces that are striking, stunning and masterfully craft- ed for today’s modern woman. That’s why our new jewelry cam- paign stars our returning brand ambassador, Niki Taylor, the world-renowned, iconic super- model and ambassador.

I MORE THAN JUST GEMS SHINE IN OUR NEW 2022 CAMPAIGN

GET TO KNOW NIKI Niki Taylor is one of the most successful models of all time. The South Florida native now calls Nashville home, where she is raising her children with her hus- band, NASCAR driver Burney Lamar. Taylor began modeling at 14 and immediately captured the heart of America, and then the world, with her girl-next-door charm and beauty. She was the youngest model to ever secure a multimillion-dollar contract and the first model to have been on six major American magazine covers in the same month. (En- tertainment Weekly called them the Niki Six: the May 1996 cov- ers of Vogue, Allure, Elle, Self, Shape and Marie Claire.) She also was featured on more covers of Seventeen and Allure than any other model then, or since. Niki has been a television inter- viewer, launched a fragrance and started a foundation for the ad- vancement of women in business. In an era of here-today-gone-to- morrow celebrity, Taylor contin- ues to be recognized worldwide for her grace, charm and on-cam- era charisma, as well as her on- going efforts for the welfare of others. And she is not slowing down, whatsoever: Taylor is of- ficially a CoverGirl again — she was the cosmetic company’s famous face from 1992 to 2000 — as the new ambassador of its Simply Ageless makeup collec- tion. “Once a CoverGirl, always a CoverGirl!” says Taylor, with her usual self-deprecating laugh.

This year, the campaign is both fun and op- ulent. The clothing mimics the luxury and fine craftmanship of each carefully appointed piece. The styling is natural and care- free. Adorned in an array of col- ored gemstones and diamonds, our brand ambassador radiates and sparkles. Taylor’s takeaway from it all? “One of the joys of working in fashion the way I do is meeting the people behind the brands,” she says. “Karen and Denis are both so hands-on. It is great to be around them. As owners and de- signers, they care so much about every aspect of their business — from the marketing to the cre- ative.”

ABOUT TIME

As we leave an analog world and progress deeper into a digital one, we trade out one headache for another. The rise of digital clocks in the late 20th century has liberat- ed us from the dependency on analog devices (though the digital world is not without its flaws) and society no longer has to suffer from the inherent inaccuracies of me- chanical timekeeping. We are now surrounded by digital devices that are synced with atomic clocks for precision — even setting them is done automatically, in most cas- es — therefore, gear-driven timekeeping is no longer a necessity. But, we now have the luxury of enjoying these little ticking mechanical miracles mainly for their sheer beauty and mind-boggling craftmanship. The need for manufacturers of mechanical watches to further improve on timekeeping accuracy is less critical than it once was — though the monetary investment required to attain a fine watch is still lofty. Nevertheless, there remains a manufacturer obsessed with creating the most precise watches in the world. Since the formation of the company, Patek Philippe has made accuracy its business. At its core, the manufactur- er is applying real watchmaking solutions — rather than gimmicks — to achieve and maintain its razor-sharp pre- ciseness. Unveiled this year, the all-new 30-255 PS man- ual-wind caliber that powers the Calatrava Ref. 6119 is a tremendous example of this. It won’t be heralded as an engineering feat like the watchmaker’s famous Caliber 89 or the Grandmaster Chime, but that doesn’t diminish the deft watchmaking that resides beneath the new watch’s dial. Although incredibly subtle, it’s an important step in maintaining watchmaking supremacy. And, it should be recognized, because it represents exactly the type of com- pany Patek Philippe has always been and still is: synony- mous with precision. My early days at Patek Philippe were very much like a game of Whac-A-Mole: Everything I learned through- out my training only led me to more questions. Spending time with a watchmaker to understand why the compa- ny’s watches are so accurate only uncovered more ques- tions. I did my best to understand each piece of informa- tion as a separate piece to a much bigger puzzle, hoping to create a clearer picture. Through many conversations with patient watchmakers — along with time at the work- bench, peering through a microscope — I began to demy- stify this engaging topic. I won’t be able to unpack all of it here, but I want to touch on the cornerstone of how the manufacturer carries out its staggering rate of exactness.

Patek Philippe Calatrava Clous de Paris Ref. 6119R and 6119G

The history built into Patek Philippe’s all-new movement is packed with obsession, perfection and competition. For de Boulle, a former company insider unwinds the whole story. WHY MECHANICAL STILL MATTERS IN A DIGITAL WORLD

pany can learn a lot in nearly two de- cades of uninterrupted business. And, so it was known that increasing the cir- cumference of the balance wheel would deliver a notable improvement in rate accuracy. This is an incredibly difficult task for the designers, working to orga- nize all 164 parts of this engine within a tight space — now made even tighter by incorporating a second mainspring barrel — all while keeping a slender pro- file. The brilliant minds would go to the greatest lengths to meet all objectives, and in the end, win figurative gold. In- tegrating this new balance wheel allows for a greater moment of inertia and offers a more robust platform to withstand dai- ly turbulence encountered by the wear- er — a solution as pure as virgin snow, free of gimmicks, and one that remains easily accessible to watchmakers, for reg- ulation. Having two mainspring barrels means an added jump in power supply: a minimum of 65 hours — nearly three days. Its case measures in at 31 millime- ters, and of course the watch fulfills the desired maximum deviation of -3/+2 sec- onds in 24 hours. The result is improved rate stability and simple precision ad- justment of the movement. Once again, Patek Philippe harmoniously pairs aes- thetics with performance. Maybe now you can see how every move that Patek Philippe makes in ad- dressing accuracy reminds me of those prestigious observatory competitions. Although medals are no longer awarded, every owner should feel proud to know they are wearing a bit of this history on their wrist — and that one manufactur- er remains steadfast in its investment in prizewinning levels of precision, just for them. About the author Michael A. Fratangelo spent nearly 10 years at Patek Philippe in its training de- partment, educating and interacting with clients, collectors and sales associates. Contact de Boulle for more information on the Calatrava Clous de Paris Ref. 6119G (white gold) & 6119R (rose gold).

THE OLYMPICS OF ACCURACY First, let’s briefly visit a piece of neat his- tory. We’ll look back at the competitive era when Patek Philippe’s mastery stole the show — at a time when mechanical accuracy mattered. The development of mechanical move- ments to achieve adequate precision for marine navigation is a fascinating tale. The hero of the story is John Harrison, a self-educated English carpenter and clockmaker who created the first porta- ble clock sufficiently accurate for deter- mining longitude at sea. In fact, his de- vice kept time to within three seconds a day, which made it far more precise than even the best watches of the time. This was a crucial development in naviga- tion during the 18th century. This type of progress in watchmaking would pave the way for chronometer-accuracy com- petitions, wherein the very best examples from various makers would compete for awards — not unlike the Olympics — held across western Europe at astronom- ical observatories, where telescopes and auxiliary instruments observed celestial objects and astronomical and meteoro- logical phenomena. Marine chronometers and scientif- ic clocks worked only in one position compared to their civilian counterparts, which were mobile. By establishing these observatories, the accuracy of civilian watches — which were carried around in pockets and spent time lying flat on bedside tables — could officially be mea- sured. That’s because observatory testing would account for the multiple positions of these watches and the varying tem- peratures they would encounter daily. With the framework and parameters for evaluation established, the distin- guished watch houses jousted to prove their worth at world’s fairs and great ex- hibitions during the 19th century. Patek Philippe passed with flying colors. In 29 international exhibitions, it would earn 20 gold medals and one silver medal. (The other eight times, representatives from the company served on the jury, so the company didn’t compete.) These results made a significant impact, and

the triumphant times for Patek Philippe elevated its appreciation among cus- tomers. Furthermore, the prizewinning movements would be cased and sold — the resulting timepieces being high- ly sought-after by collectors of the day. Accompanying each one of these watch- es was an official rating certificate from the respective observatory. So influential were these competitions that they would become the greatest marketing tool in es- tablishing a reputation of performance. Even in the 21st century, with the great observatory competitions now in the distant past, these award-winning mech- anisms still compel bidders to pay mil- lions at auction for an individual watch. An astounding testament of this is Ref. 2458, originally owned by J.B. Champi- on, a lawyer from Texas. Produced in 1952, the Ref. 2458 is a time-only watch with a second-hand indicator displayed in a subdial at nine o’clock. Champion commissioned a special dial that would bear the movement’s rating certificate is-

sued by the prestigious Geneva Observa- tory, along with the words “Made espe- cially for J.B. Champion.” On November 12, 2012, it achieved a final hammer price of 3,779,000 Swiss francs (more than $4.1 million today), at an auction held by Christie’s in Geneva — a very impressive result for a non-complicated timepiece! THE WATCHMAKING SPELL In 1959, Patek Philippe ran a two-page ad in American magazines with specific messaging on precision. Its main pur- pose was to address the astronomical accuracy of each Patek Philippe model, while also highlighting observatories. It stated: “An electronic observatory-motivated time-recorder presides at the work table of every Patek Philippe watchmaker. He makes adjustments with mathemat- ical exactitude until there is an abso- lute minimum of variance between the watch in his hand and the arbiter of time on earth at Greenwich, England.”

It goes on to say: “Every Patek Philippe must maintain its Observatory precision not just for a reasonable length of time, but indefinite- ly.” Therefore, the challenge for Patek Philippe during the observatory com- petitions — and still to this day — was twofold: achieve a high rate of accuracy and maintain it. And the cornerstone on which Patek Philippe builds its cathedral of precision is the mighty Gyromax® balance. The balance assembly regulates the flow of time and is responsible for the precision of the watch. Therefore, it is the regulating organ of a mechanical move- ment. This faction is composed of a bal- ance and a balance spring that oscillates under the impulse of the escapement. Through a series of patents in 1949, and again in 1951, the Gyromax® was an in- vention that further revolutionized the entire watchmaking world and is used in all modern Patek Philippe wristwatches.

Its genius design allows for extreme ac- curacy and convenient regulation.

WINDING AWAY INTO THE FUTURE As the fourth-generation president of Patek Philippe, Thierry Stern enjoys his responsibility of pushing the limits of watchmaking, tirelessly working to narrow the performance gap between digital and mechanical means. For him, there is no gear, wheel or spring inside a movement that is exempt from being redesigned, if necessary. With the strict criteria of the Patek Philippe Seal lighting the way — it is called the watch industry’s strictest set of directives, covering design, manufac- ture and service — today’s team ushers in the latest evolution of the Gyromax® with the unveiling of the all-new Cali- ber 30-255 PS movement powering the new Calatrava Clous de Paris Ref. 6119. This heavyweight of regulation just got heavier. I guess it’s easy to assume that a com-
