Bien que sa retraite officielle soit pré- vue l'année prochaine, il reconnaît qu'une éventuelle victoire électorale pourrait accé- lérer légèrement son départ du milieu de l'enseignement. La question de l'approvisionnement en eau demeure selon lui l'un des dossiers les plus importants pour l'avenir de Casselman. Il estime qu'une solution permanente devra être trouvée afin de soutenir le développe- ment futur de la municipalité. « Ce n’est pas Paul Groulx qui va régler ce dossier-là tout seul. Il faut qu’on travaille avec l’administration, la municipalité, de proche avec le conseil, et avoir un conseil uni », avait-il expliqué. Les infrastructures municipales, la mo- dernisation de l'administration, la communi- cation avec les citoyens et la transparence demeurent également au cœur de sa vision. « Nous sommes le palier de gouverne- ment qui est le plus proche de la popula- tion, donc il faut rester proche », a-t-il déjà souligné. Son slogan de campagne, « À votre ser- vice à 110% », reflète selon lui son approche axée sur l'écoute, la disponibilité et le travail d'équipe. Les électeurs de Casselman auront l'occasion de choisir leur prochain maire lors des élections municipales prévues en octobre 2026. À quelques mois du début officiel de la campagne, Paul Groulx est l'un des premiers candidats à avoir officiellement enregistré sa candidature pour la mairie. de dollars ont été transférés au fonds de réserve de gestion immobilière des CUPR afin de couvrir tous les imprévus restants liés à l'achèvement de la construction. Fin avril de cette année, les coûts de construction de la nouvelle résidence s'élevaient à 92 102 672 dollars, soit un écart de 657 234 dollars par rapport au budget de construction approuvé de 92 759 906 dollars. Le conseil des CUPR a approuvé la recommandation d'accorder au service des finances la latitude d'approuver les dépenses imprévues, le cas échéant, pour le projet de la nouvelle résidence, afin d'éviter tout retard supplémentaire avant son ouverture.

Après avoir annoncé son intention plus tôt cette année, le conseiller municipal Paul Groulx a officiellement enregistré sa candidature à la mairie de Casselman en vue des élections municipales de 2026. Élu au conseil municipal depuis deux mandats, M. Groulx franchit ainsi une nou- velle étape dans sa campagne en confirmant officiellement sa présence sur le bulletin de vote pour le poste de maire. « Pour enlever le doute, s'il y en a qui avait un doute ou quoi que ce soit, il faut être certain que c'est officiel », a déclaré M. Groulx en entrevue. « Je l'avais annoncé au mois de janvier sur les médias sociaux. » Le candidat affirme vouloir maintenant amorcer les préparatifs de sa campagne électorale, qu'il souhaite mener dans un esprit positif. « Le but, c'est de faire une campagne positive », a-t-il expliqué. Une candidature annoncée depuis plusieurs mois M. Groulx avait déjà confirmé son inten- tion d'ambitionner pour la mairie dans une précédente annonce publique. À ce moment, il avait expliqué que cette décision s'inscri- vait dans la continuité de son engagement envers la municipalité après plusieurs années au sein du conseil. Selon lui, le poste de maire représente l'occasion de poursuivre le travail entrepris au cours des dernières années et de contri- buer à l'avenir de la municipalité.

Cette transition professionnelle constitue l'une des raisons qui l'ont encouragé à se lancer dans la course à la mairie. S'il est élu, il prévoit consacrer toute son énergie à ses fonctions municipales.

soins de longue durée, propriété des CUPR et exploitée par celle-ci, devait ouvrir ses portes en janvier 2025 afin de permettre aux résidents de quitter l'ancienne résidence et aux nouveaux résidents d'occuper les places vacantes. Des modifications apportées au système d'alarme incendie, ainsi que des augmentations de coûts pour certaines phases du projet en raison de la pandé- mie, ont retardé l'approbation du permis d'occupation du bâtiment. Le rapport du service des finances indique que les travaux de construction de la nouvelle résidence « sont dans leur phase finale », l'approbation finale pour l'occupation étant conditionnée par les résultats des
inspections municipales et provinciales. Le rapport précise également que le projet res- pecte le budget prévu, mais que des coûts supplémentaires pourraient survenir selon les résultats des rapports d'inspection. Le rapport recommandait l'approbation d'une liste de révisions budgétaires pos- sibles pour le projet de nouvelle résidence, que le service des finances pourrait mettre en œuvre si nécessaire. À défaut, précisait le rapport, le service des finances pourrait être contraint de présenter au conseil des demandes distinctes de révisions budgé- taires supplémentaires, retardant ainsi l'ouverture de la nouvelle résidence. Accès au service Comme pour le module de la carte de bibliothèque lancé plus tôt cette année, les citoyens doivent télécharger l’application Bciti+, s’inscrire à la carte citoyenne et sélec- tionner le module Compteurs intelligents.
Le module permet notamment de détecter rapidement les fuites potentielles, identifier les consommations anormales, envoyer des alertes personnalisées (seuils, budget, anomalies), et offrir des recommandations concrètes pour réduire la consommation. Par exemple, un citoyen peut recevoir un message tel que : « Vous pourriez économi- ser jusqu’à 150 litres par jour », accompagné de conseils pratiques. Une interface pour mieux comprendre sa consommation Intégré à l’application Bciti+, le module propose une interface conviviale permettant aux utilisateurs de visualiser leur consomma- tion quotidienne et mensuelle, suivre leurs tendances d’utilisation, recevoir des alertes en temps réel, et accéder à des conseils adaptés à leur situation. L’objectif est de passer de la donnée à l’action de manière simple et accessible. Ce nouvel outil vise à réduire le gaspillage d’eau, diminuer les coûts pour les citoyens, alléger la pression sur les infrastructures municipales, et encourager des comporte- ments plus durables. La mairesse de Casselman, Geneviève Lajoie, souligne l’importance de cette inno- vation pour la communauté. « Pour moi, tout ce qui contribue à bâtir notre communauté et à améliorer la trans- parence est essentiel. Donc si l’intelligence artificielle (IA) est la voie à suivre, alors c’est la voie à suivre. Je fais confiance aux
technologies utilisées par notre personnel, car elles ont été étudiées et sont sécuri- taires », affirme-t-elle. De son côté, la PDG de bciti+ / ATNA, Vivianne Gravel, insiste sur l’approche ciblée de la technologie. « Nous poursuivons le déploiement d’ATNA avec une approche simple : utiliser l’intel- ligence artificielle là où elle est réellement
La technologie BCITI franchit une nouvelle étape à la Municipalité de Casselman avec le lancement du module Compteurs intelligents dans l’application Bciti+. Cette nouvelle fonctionnalité vise à aider les citoyens à mieux comprendre, anticiper et réduire leur consommation d’eau. Dans un contexte où la gestion des res- sources devient de plus en plus critique, l’eau représente un enjeu majeur pour les municipalités. Au Canada, la consomma- tion résidentielle demeure parmi les plus élevées au monde, et une part importante de cette eau est perdue en raison de fuites ou d’utilisations inefficaces. Les municipalités sont ainsi appelées à moderniser leurs infrastructures, tout en outillant les citoyens afin d’adopter des com- portements plus responsables au quotidien. Une technologie connectée aux foyers Au cours des derniers mois, des uni- tés d’interface de compteur (MXU: Meter Interface Unit) ont été installées dans l’ensemble des foyers. Le système Bciti+ permet désormais de relier ces données à son application et de les transformer en informations simples et exploitables.

Cette distinction provinciale souligne l’impact durable de son travail sur l’éduca- tion, l’innovation et le rayonnement de la francophonie en Ontario.

L’ancienne présidente-directrice géné- rale du Collège La Cité, Lise Bourgeois, a reçu l’Ordre de l’Ontario 2025 lors d’une cérémonie officielle tenue à Toronto, soulignant une carrière de plus de 40 ans dans le domaine de l’éducation. La reconnaissance met en lumière son leadership exceptionnel ainsi que ses nom- breuses contributions au développement de l’éducation postsecondaire francophone en Ontario. Au cours de sa carrière, Mme Bourgeois a notamment dirigé le Collège La Cité de 2010 à 2024, période durant laquelle l’éta- blissement s’est imposé comme un chef de file dans la formation postsecondaire en français. Sous sa direction, le collège a renforcé sa réputation pour la qualité de ses diplômés et son rôle central au sein de la communauté francophone ontarienne. Elle a également mis en œuvre le profil distinctif des diplômés de La Cité, une ini- tiative visant à améliorer l’employabilité et la préparation des étudiants au marché du travail. Parmi ses autres réalisations figure la création de MobiliCité, un modèle innovant d’apprentissage expérientiel basé à Toronto. Visionnaire en matière d’innovation, Mme
LE PARCOURS ATYPIQUE DE MARK MAHON Mark Mahon. Le jeune adolescent originaire de Vankleek Hill en a fait du chemin depuis ses années au sein de l’Association du hockey mineur de Hawkesbury et ses trois saisons dans l’uniforme des Hawks, de la Ligue junior Centrale du Canada. Un parcours atypique emprunté par très peu de hockeyeurs de la région au fil des années.
Un périple, qui comme joueur, l’a amené dans les Maritimes, à Montréal, puis jusqu’en Allemagne où il a évolué dans les quatre ligues de hockey professionnel, dont la DEL ( Deutsche Eishockey Liga ), le circuit numéro un au pays. Mais, son cheminement devient encore plus intéressant une fois sa carrière active terminée. Son parcours l’a apporté cette fois-ci jusque sur la scène internationale. De l’Allemagne où il réside toujours aujourd’hui jusqu’au Japon où il a occupé diverses fonctions au sein du programme national de hockey du pays. Cette belle grande aventure a débuté en 1985-1986, après son séjour avec les Hawks. Il s’est exilé dans les Maritimes, le temps d’une année, pour se joindre aux Colts de Cole Harbour, le club hôte du tournoi de la Coupe du centenaire. Il a aidé l’équipe à se rendre jusqu’en grande finale du tournoi. La saison suivante, il s’est retrouvé à Montréal où il a poursuivi sa carrière et ses études à l’Université Concordia. Il a porté les couleurs des Stingers pendant trois saisons, obtenant 57 passes en 33 parties à sa dernière année, un record du hockey universitaire canadien qui perdure toujours aujourd’hui. Ensuite, il a passé les dix saisons suivantes en Allemagne, évoluant tantôt dans l’un ou l’autre des quatre circuits professionnels. Son fait d’armes: une saison de 66 buts et 247 points en seulement 40 parties avec l’équipe Braunlager EHC/Harz de la Division 4 en 1995-1996. Oui, vous avez bien lu, il a accumulé en moyenne plus de Sa carrière a pris une nouvelle tangente à son retour en sol canadien au début des années 2000. Un bref séjour de trois mois derrière le banc des Hawks de Hawkesbury à titre d’adjoint à l’entraîneur-chef Dave Léger et une deuxième expérience dans les mêmes fonctions avec les Gee Gees de l’Université d’Ottawa lui donnent la piqure du coaching et confirme que c’est dans le monde du hockey qu’il veut poursuivre sa carrière. À ce moment-là, il apprend qu’une équipe professionnelle de hockey au Japon est à la recherche d’un instructeur-chef. Il décide de postuler pour l’emploi. Quelques semaines plus tard, il se retrouve à la barre des Icebucks de Nikko. Et voilà le début d’une nouvelle aventure qui lui permettra d’occuper diverses fonctions sur la scène internationale du hockey, au Japon et en Allemagne. Une aventure qui dure maintenant depuis plus de 25 ans. Au Japon, Mahon a été entraîneur-chef, instructeur-adjoint, directeur-gérant ou gérant sportif à tous les échelons. Que ce soit au niveau professionnel, aux championnats mondiaux (hommes, six points par match! Nouvelle tangente
U20 ou U18) ou aux Olympiques. En Allemagne, il a été adjoint à l’entraîneur- chef Uwe Krupp avec l’Eisbären de Berlin et gérant sportif du Kolner Haie de Cologne, deux des franchises les plus prestigieuses de la DEL. « Student of the game » Ceux qui ont connu Mahon alors qu’il portait les couleurs des Hawks vous diront qu’il était prédestiné à un tel parcours de carrière. Le jeune hockeyeur de l’époque était un joueur intelligent qui savait bien lire le jeu et qui s’intéressait déjà à l’aspect stratégique du sport. Il était ce qu’on appelle communément un « student of the game ». « J’ai eu la chance de jouer pour de très bons instructeurs au fil des années, a-t-il déclaré lors d’une récente entrevue. J’ai croisé aussi des gens très intéressants sur mon chemin. J’ai appris beaucoup de plusieurs d’entre eux. Des choses qui m’ont été très utiles et qui m’ont aidé à devenir la personne que je suis. » Mahon a mentionné deux noms en particulier: Jean-Guy « Horace » Cyr, son entraîneur au niveau midget à Hawkesbury, et Paul Arsenault, l’entraîneur-chef des Stingers. De Cyr, il retient son grand dévouement. « Cet homme-là était d’une bonté et d’une générosité hors de l’ordinaire », souligne-t-il. Quant à Arsenault, il lui a enseigné comment jouer le hockey de la bonne façon, comment jouer sur 200 pieds. Il lui a appris aussi à respecter le sport. « Ils m’ont inculqué des valeurs que j’essaie de mettre en pratique à tous les jours », déclare Mahon, qui à l’âge de 60 ans, travaille toujours autant. Il est un des associés de la firme Fischbach Sports, une agence de joueurs, établie à Cologne. Il cumule aussi les fonctions de consultant spécial pour l’équipe nationale U20 du Japon. « Fischbach Sports me donne l’opportunité de faire œuvre utile et de redonner aux autres. C’est une agence qui est là pour les bonnes raisons et qui fait les choses de la bonne façon », précise-t-il. « Au hockey, un jour ou un autre, peu importe qui tu es ou quel genre de joueur tu es, la porte finie toujours par se fermer. Ça ne veut pas dire que ta carrière est terminée pour autant. L’Europe se veut une très belle et bonne option. Il y a plein de nouvelles portes à ouvrir ici. Mon rôle est de trouver laquelle est la bonne pour le joueur qui est en quête d’une nouvelle option », explique-t-il avant de terminer en me demandant de saluer tous ses bons amis de Vankleek Hill et de Hawkesbury. Lacombe et Audrey Guévin-Joseph a fini au quatrième rang de sa vague avec un chrono de 52.83, le 13e meilleur temps de la ronde préliminaire. L’autre représentant des Kodiaks, Tommy Hall, a pris la 12e place de l’épreuve du lancer du poids chez les garçons juniors. Sa meilleure prestation de la journée, un lancer de 13.37 mètres. Top 10 pour Lorrain, Galerio et Barnes Belles prestations aussi d’Oscar Lor- rain, Oliver Galerio et Taylor Barnes qui ont terminé dans le Top 10 de leurs épreuves respectives. Lorrain, un coureur de demi-fond de l’ÉSC L’Escale, a fini sixième au 3000 mètres et huitième au 1500 mètres chez les garçons junior. Ses chronos respectifs: 9:06.71 et 4:09.29. Galerio, du Vankleek Hill Collegiate Insti- tute, a pris la septième place de l’épreuve du saut en longueur chez les garçons novices avec une prestation de 5.79 mètres. Il a participé aussi au sprint de 100 mètres, obtenant le 18e meilleur temps (11.91) de la ronde préliminaire. Barnes, des Dynamos de l’ÉSC de Casselman, a terminé en dixième place de l’épreuve du triple saut chez les filles séniors. Son meilleur saut de la journée: 11.06 mètres. Mentions honorables Des mentions très honorables pour les quatre autres représentantes de Prescott- Russell: les Dynamos Alexia Lavertue (20e – au triple saut junior - 9.78 mètres) et Audrée Godin (19e au lancer du poids novice – 9.14 mètres); Shekinah Lotshaka, des Cyclones de l’ÉSC Embrun (17e – au saut en longueur sénior - 4.92 mètres); et Michelle Aghomon, du Rockland District High School (saut en longueur junior).
Maxime Henrie, des Cougars de l’École secondaire catholique L’Escale de Rockland, et Tristan McGuire, des Kodiaks de l’École secondaire catho- lique régionale de Hawkesbury, sont revenus de Ste Catherine avec le sou- rire aux lèvres et une médaille au cou, samedi dernier. Ils ont monté tous les deux sur le podium lors de leur épreuve respective aux championnats ontariens d’athlétisme interscolaire. Henrie a remporté la médaille d’or au 200 mètres en chaise roulante. Il a réussi un chrono de 50.65, devançant le seul autre concurrent par plus de 52 secondes. McGuire, lui, a gagné la médaille de bronze au 800 mètres chez les athlètes avec une déficience intellectuelle. Il a parcouru la distance en 2:23.19, à deux secondes seu- lement de la deuxième marche du podium. Une 4e place pour Gibeau En tout et partout, 14 étudiants-athlètes de Prescott et Russell ont pris part aux championnats provinciaux, fournissant de valeureux efforts face à l’élite de l’athlétisme interscolaire en Ontario. Olivia Gibeau, de l’ÉSCR de Hawkesbury, a raté le podium de peu dans l’épreuve du lancer du javelot chez les filles novices. Elle a fini en quatrième position avec une prestation de 32.23 mètres, à moins d’un mètre de la médaillée de bronze. Son record personnel de la saison (33.22m) lui aurait permis de monter sur la troisième marche du podium. La jeune athlète des Kodiaks participait aussi au relais 4 X 100 mètres. He noted that projects like the Cambridge expansion help ensure growing communities continue to have access to high-quality edu- cational facilities. The need for additional space has become increasingly apparent as enrolment continues to rise. Cambridge Public School currently serves approximately 540 students and relies on 14 portable classrooms to accommodate its student population. a 14-day vehicle impoundment. UCDSB Chief Executive Officer Ron Fer- guson said the project will help the board continue meeting the educational needs of local families. “We are incredibly thankful to the Minister of Education Paul Calandra and MPP Sté- phane Sarrazin for the funding and support of this project,” said Ferguson. “The Cambridge Public School community is growing and this new addition will allow the Upper Canada District School Board to continue to provide the community with quality public education.” In addition to expanding classroom space, the project will include upgrades to the school's parking area, bus lanes, and student drop-off zones. The new addition is expected to open in September 2028.
Construction is officially moving ahead on a major expansion at Cambridge Public School in Embrun, as the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) celebrated the project's groundbreaking with local dignitaries, school staff, and community representatives during a ceremonial sod-turning event. The addition will create 427 new pupil spaces, increasing the school's capacity to approximately 686 students. The project represents an investment of $18.2 million in public education. UCDSB Trustee Corina Parisien said the expansion reflects the community's rapid Members of the Russell County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged 40 drivers with stunt driving since Monday, May 1. N EWS VÉRONIC DICAIRE FOUNDATION AND CSDCEO ANNOUNCE MAJOR PARTNERSHIP

Ottawa, which awards eligible students up to $10,000 to support academic perseverance and success. Historically, the foundation has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars through high-profile events like the Véronic DiCaire Open (a premier golf tournament) and benefit gala dinners held internationally, such as in Geneva, Switzerland. “Supporting the teachers and students of the CSDCEO schools today is a real home- coming for me,” added DiCaire. “What a joy it is to contribute, in my native province and language, to the development of the next generation of Francophone artists.” The announcement was made at L'École secondaire catholique L'Escale (ESC L’Es- cale) in Rockland, the largest school in the CSDCEO with more than 1,100 students and home of Showbizz , an annual, multidiscipli- nary French-language variety show produced by the student theatre troupe. Founded in 1987, this long-standing high school tradition collaborates with students and staff members to showcase musical, theatrical, and artistic talent. “I am a graduate of this school (ESC L’Escale), so this announcement is special and meaningful for me, and I am honoured to be here today,” said Jean Lemay, the pre- sident of the CSDCEO. “This is more than just a collaboration between our board and the foundation, it shows that the foundation as the confidence has to support our board, our schools, and especially, our students.” The partnership aims to support students enrolled in specialized arts concentrations and arts-related programs across all seven CSDCEO secondary schools, provide finan- cial backing, mentorship from professional artists, and real-world creative experiences. It also covers both on-stage talents and behind- the-scenes roles, including lighting, sound engineering, set design, and production ma- nagement. The collaboration offers ongoing professional development and specialized training opportunities for teaching personnel. "We are very pleased to collaborate with the Véronic DiCaire Foundation to offer even more opportunities to our students,” said
Anne Simard, the principal of ESC L’Escale. “This new collaboration will allow us to continue to promote our focus on the arts. In addition, the students involved in Show- bizz, our annual multidisciplinary show, will benefit from exceptional support, both on stage and behind the scenes, to enrich their experience.” The exact form of financial assistance has not been determined yet. Consultations have begun with officials of the seven schools to identify what the needs are. Schools will also have the opportunity to apply for funding from the Véronic DiCaire Foundation to support
their artistic projects. "This partnership represents an excep- tional opportunity for students in our 7 high schools to develop their creativity and live inspiring artistic experiences,” said Lyne Racine, Director of Education and Secretary of the CSDCEO. “Arts and culture are an important part of our students' educational journeys and this collaboration will enrich their school experience." Students from the seven schools show- cased a glimpse of their talents with a num- ber of performances, including sharing the stage with DiCaire.

CELEBRATING A VERY SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
It was a celebration of artistic crea- tivity in local youth when the Véronic DiCaire Foundation and the Conseil scolaire du district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO) announcement a historic collaboration. On Friday, June 3, the CSDCEO and the foundation unveiled a partnership that will significantly boost arts culture for youth across the board’s seven high schools in Rockland, Embrun, Casselman, Plantage- net, Hawkesbury, Cornwall and Alexandria providing them with more resources and opportunities to develop their artistic talents. “This partnership is particularly close to my heart because, before stepping onto the big stage, I took my first artistic steps close to here, at the Caféthèque at Casselman Catholic High School,” said Véronic DiCaire, the acclaimed Canadian Franco-Ontarian singer, vocal impressionist, and actress from Embrun. The Véronic DiCaire Foundation is a reco- gnized Canadian public charity established by the Franco-Ontarian singer that provides financial support to young artists, organi- zing French-language cultural events, and acquiring specialized equipment for cultural programs. The foundation is heavily involved in higher education, notably funding the Véronic DiCaire Scholarship (or Award) at L’a Cité collégiale in

another donation towards the project of $258,544.29, for a total of 508,544.29 for the purchase of all of the motorized lifts for use in the new Prescott and Russell Residence. “These essential devices will be installed in every (tenant’s) room of the Residence,” said Robitaille. Robitaille described the success of the fundraising campaign as a significant contribution to the well-being of present and future tenants of the Residence. “They will not only support the work of our caregiver staff,” she said, “but also significantly improve the safety, mobility, and quality of life of the residents.” Robitaille credited the success of the campaign to the overall support of the Prescott and Russell community, including individuals, businesses, and service groups, and the efforts of the Foundation’s board, staff, and volunteers. She singled out for special acclaim Foundation members Michel Beaulne, Marcel Dicaire, Sylvie Rathier, Liette Valade, Robert Prévost, and campaign facilitator Louis Rathier. “It is through close collaboration, a sha- red vision, and the dedicated effort of each member that we were able to achieve this ambitious goal,” said Robitaille.
The Prescott and Russell Residence Foundation is celebrating a big suc- cess with one of its fundraising cam- paigns and wants to share the news with everyone. Dénise Robitaille, president of the Prescott and Russell Residence Founda- tion, announced “with great pride” a very successful end to the non-profit agency’s latest fundraising campaign for the benefit of residents who will be moving into the new Residence facility on Spence Street in Hawkesbury. Robitaille made the announce- ment during the May 28 session of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell council (UCPR). For the past two years the foundation’s latest campaign, Souleve-moi!/Lift Me Up!, has been focused on raising funds for the purchase of 224 motorized lifts to assist Residence staffs with helping tenants who have mobility problems to get into and out bed and also getting in and out of bath tubs. In November 2024, the Foundation presented a $250,000 donation towards the purchase of the lifts and at the end of May this year, Robitaille announced

1. MELON, CUCUMBER AND PROSCIUTTO SALAD
This sweet-and-savoury salad works as a refreshing appetizer, or you can serve it in small bowls as a light snack alongside drinks. Dice two cucumbers and one melon, such as cantaloupe or honeydew. Combine them in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together three tablespoons of olive oil, one tablespoon of red wine vinegar and one tablespoon of honey or maple syrup, and add a pinch of salt. The non-profit recreation group’s focus this year is on continued trail improve- ments, including plans for resurfacing the 300-foot section of the trail that comprises the former Plantagenet rail bridge. Collard indicated that feature of the trail has great historical value to the area. “That structure is more than 100 years old,” he said, adding the wood-and-steel structure dates back to when there was regular rail service through the region. Continuing work on signage improvement along the trail and also increased marketing of the trail to attract more tourists from other parts of Ontario and outside of the province are also priorities on the trail group’s agenda. Concern about the future for the trail because of the proposed high-speed rail project that ALTO wants to build linking Toronto to Quebec City is a big concern

Celebration was the theme of this year’s annual general meeting for the group that looks after the Prescott and Russell Recreational Trail. Last year saw the number of visitors using the recreational trail at more than 120,000, “which was a record” according to Eric Collard, executive director for the Sentier recreatif Prescott and Russell Recreation Trail group (SRPRRT). “We had a very good year this year especially with the snowmobilers,” said Collard. “We had a much better winter turnout. More people are getting to know about our trail.” Over the past five years, the SRPRRT has invested about $1 million in trail mainte- nance and upgrade work.
