STAGIAIRES À QUEEN’S PARK L’Assemblée de la francophonie de l’Ontario (AFO) a lancé un programme qui permettra à cinq étudiants universitaires franco- phones de la province de faire leurs premières armes à l’Assemblée législative de l’Ontario. Grâce à un partenariat avec le Conseil de la coopération de l’Ontario (CCO), l’AFO offrira cinq stages à temps plein d’une durée de 12 semaines, dans le cœur de la politique ontarienne. Chaque stagiaire sera jumelé à un député de l’un des trois partis politiques reconnus à la Chambre des communes. Pour postuler, le candidat doit étudier dans un programme universitaire, retourner aux études après la période de stage et étudier dans un domaine connexe à la politique. Pierre Leroux is now the official Liberal candidate for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell for the June provincial election. Leroux was acclaimed, April 13, as suc- cessor to retiring Liberal MPP Grant Crack, during a riding association meeting in St. Isidore. Traditional superstition has Friday the 13 as an unlucky day but Leroux saw it as a good omen for him and a bad one for his election competition. “It’s starting off well,” he said during a brief media scrum with local reporters following his confirmation, which included welcoming speeches from veteran senior Liberals like former GPR MP and federal cabinet minister Don Boudria, and Jean-Marc Lalonde, a longtime MPP for the riding under several premiers. Leroux named two key concerns he will pursue as part of his campaign during the next few weeks. One is the upgrading of the County Road 17/Highway 174 link between Rockland and Orléans, to deal with growing worries over traffic congestion and safety along the route. The other concern is the problem with the City of Ottawa “borrowing” Prescott-Russell ambulance service units to deal with its growing number of emergency calls, rather than expanding its own ambulance service. During his own acceptance speech, Ler- oux listed aid for infrastructure, expansion of natural gas service, improved Internet access, and local government autonomy among the needs and concerns for residents of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. He noted that the riding has a strong tradition of success with a teamwork approach when lobbying the provincial government on issues. “Together, we can do better,” he said, “and that’s the approach I want to bring at Queen’s Park. Our greatest strength in GPR is its people.”

Freezing rain, with winds of up to 70 kilometers, struck the region. Monday, April 16, causing several power outages. In total, more than 11,500 homes were cut off in Prescott-Russell, according to Hydro One. The aftermath of the storm persisted for many until the next day. There were still power outages on Tuesday, April 17 in Embrun. Several schools were closed on Tuesday due to power outages, including L’École élémentaire publique De La Rivière Castor in Embrun and L’École élémentaire catholique Saint-Viateur in Limoges. Several emergency refuges were set up on Tuesday evening in The Nation Municipality and in the Township of Russell. “We had to give this option to residents, we didn’t have a choice,” said Russell Mayor Pierre Leroux. —photo Nom

SALON DE LA FEMME À EMBRUN La 5 e édition du Salon de la femme à Embrun se tiendra le 28 avril prochain. Les femmes auront alors l’occasion de visiter plus de 60 kiosques pour discuter, entre autres, de secrets de beauté, de bien-être et de santé. Des défilés de mode auront également lieu au cours de cette journée où la femme sera à l’honneur. Le tout est organisé afin d’amasser des fonds pour la recherche sur le cancer du sein. Volunteering is easier than it has ever been before
According to the organization Volunteer Ca- nada’s studies, six out of ten Canadians have volunteered at some point in their lives. Typi- cally, Canadians volunteer either early or late in life. Canadians between 15 and 18 have the highest rate of volunteerism while those between 65 and 74 volunteer the most total hours. Sixty-one per cent of Canadians who do not volunteer claim they are unable to make long- term commitments. Luckily, between social media and national efforts by groups like Vo- lunteer Canada, it’s easier than ever to connect with organizations and people who need your help in a way that fits your schedule. HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? This year, Volunteer Canada’s National Volun- teer Week runs fromApril 15 to 21. It’s an an- nual effort to get the word out about

Leur engagement leur permet à la fois d’apprendre à mieux se connaître et de faire valoir leurs talents. Ils comptent aussi sur le bénévolat pour développer de nouveaux ré- seaux sociaux et ainsi faciliter leur intégration professionnelle. Le Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario est le premier conseil scolaire au monde à être certifié ISO 14001 et à offrir la certification ISO 14000 pour les élèves reconnue par les Nations Unies et l’Unesco.
Bières, fromages et charcuteries ont attiré 72 convives à la Brasserie Étienne Brûlé le 10 avril dernier. C’était la deuxième édition de la dégustation de bières, fromages et charcuteries organisée par le Club Optimiste d’Embrun. La soirée se voulait une activité de collecte de fonds pour l’organisme communautaire. Pour l’occasion, l’équipe des propriétaires de la Brasserie Étienne Brûlé, Richard Ménard et Liette Darveau, avait préparé un menu bien spécial, composé de produits locaux, où bières, charcuteries et fromages s’agençaient de façon harmonieuse. Le tout était accompagné d’instructions du chef et sommelier Yanik Quintal. Le Club Optimiste d’Embrun utilisera ces fonds afin d’aider des enfants du niveau élémentaire qui ont besoin de lunettes.
