The hospital has enough rapid-antigen tests to shorten the time for some staff members to get back to work, but they don’t have access to more, and they don’t have enough for everyone. Dr. Julie Maranda, medical chief of staff at HGH, stated the hospital is working night and day to avoid getting to the point of closure. HGH declared a COVID-19 outbreak in one of its in-patient units on January 4. Due to staffing shortages, the HGH is considering closing part of the emer- gency department. Hawkesbury and District General Hospital (HGH) is considering overnight closures of its emergency department because of staffing shortages. An internal memo from hospital management is urging all “off-duty person- nel” to take on additional shifts in the face of hundreds of staff members calling in sick. «The situation is more serious than it has ever been in the course of the pan- demic,» the memo said. «In the 100-year history of HGH, we have not had to close our [emergency department]. The closure has an impact on many families who will be required to travel considerably further for emergency services.»

Local municipalities confirmed tempo- rary closures for some of their facilities as part of the provincial government’s partial lockdown order that took effect during the first week of January. The Robert Hartley Sports Complex in Hawkesbury is closed for the duration. Also public access to the municipal office is by appointment only. Residents who need to see town staff for any issues must either phone or email to make an appointment. Residents can pay permit fees, parking tickets, or municipal bills online through a Paymentus setup at the municipal web- site at https://ipn.paymentus.com/cp/ hawk?lang=en. house nearby is nice and deep, with just enough water left at the bottom from last autumn’s rain to make a child-sized speed- skating track, with a little shovel work to clear off the snow cover. The speed-skating Lajeunesse quartet, under the watchful eyes of their mother, Sophie, and their grandmother, Sylvie Quinty, and the family dog, Café, spent most of a sunny and crisp Friday morning, and part of the afternoon, January 7, zipping up and down the ditch. They had a few spills every so often but then just get back up on their feet and skate on to the finish. Health professionals recommend that people try to get outside during the daytime as often as possible during the winter to help raise their spirits.

The partial lockdown situation for Ontario is a depressing way to begin the new year but four children over in Alfred-Plantagenet do not let that stop them from having fun. Charles, Mathis, Lea, and Adrien Lajeu- nesse live in a wooded area of the township between the villages of Wendover and Cur- ran. The sparse amount of snow so far this winter season, combined with the steady sub-zero temperature, inspired them to make some changes to an old Canadian winter sports tradition: pond hockey. What you should know about Alzheimer’s disease and other neurocognitive disorders

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Every year, the Alzheimer Society takes the opportunity to raise awareness about neurocognitive disorders and the importance of early diagnoses. Here’s an overview of what you should know. WHAT ARE NEUROCOGNITIVE DISORDERS? Although neurocognitive disorders are often asso- ciated with memory loss, they can also affect a per- son’s mood, behaviour, thinking, language skills and problem-solving abilities. However, it’s impor- tant to note that neurocognitive disorders are diffe- rent from age-related memory loss (ARML), which isn’t caused by an underlying medical condition. WHO DO THEY AFFECT? Alzheimer’s disease most commonly affects people over the age of 65. However, some individuals may start to show signs of cognitive impairment in their

50s or 40s. Additionally, certain medical factors such as experiencing head trauma or having cere- brovascular disease can increase the risk of develo- ping a neurocognitive disorder. Early diagnosis is important because neurocognitive disorders are progressive and worsen over time. WHAT CAN YOU DO? Although neurocognitive disorders often affect a person’s ability to communicate and express them- self, it’s important to continue to converse with them to help them feel safe and at ease. If you have Alzheimer’s disease or think you may have a neuro- cognitive disorder, talk to your doctor and contact the Alzheimer Society of Canada. C’est avec tristesse que la famille Drouin annonce qu’une étoile de Noël s’est ajoutée, suivant le décès de Michel Drouin entouré de sa famille à la maison, le samedi 25 décembre 2021, à l’âge de 68 ans. Il est parti rejoindre son épouse, feu Elaine Drouin, séparé de quelques mois et ses parents feu Adrien Drouin et de feu Pauline Tassé.
