The 15 origi- nal options for the LRT expansion ranged in pro- jected cost from $562 million to $2.5 billion to build. The four now on the short list are consid- ered the feasible to finance.
and nothing can be built without addressing the downtown bottleneck first.” The interim EA report, now available for review, indicates four route options for the western LRT expansion as the best out of the original list of 15. The Carling Avenue corridor is still a contend- er. The report recommendations ask for direc- tions from both the transport committee and council for a more detailed stud y of the Carling corridor option. Right now no one option has final approval for the LRT expansion. The cit y ’s Transportation Master Plan is still due for review this y ear. The interim EA report should be part of the June 27 council agenda. Factors to consider in choosing the expansion route include volume and speed of passenger deliver y . The main rail service must move between 12,000 to 14,000 passengers each hour with four-car trains during peak commuter periods,
the cit y ’s planned rapid transit network, includ- ing the O-Train and the Lincoln Fields Station. The final Western LRT Corridor Planning and Environmental Assessment stud y should be read y for both the committee’s and council’s review in the first quarter of next y ear. An y final decision on expansion corridor route will not happen until at least the middle of next y ear.
Ottawa | The City of Ottawa is still trying to work out how to bring commuters from its out- lying areas into the downtown core the quick- est way possible without increasing traffic con- gestion on its major highway routes. The municipal transportation committee has the latest interim report for review at its June meeting on the environmental assessment (EA) for the proposed western light-rail transit (LRT) expansion plan. “As we keep our e y es sharpl y focused on get- ting shovels in the ground to build the heart of our new LRT s y stem, it is also important to con- tinue to prudentl y plan for the future,” stated Ma y or Jim Watson in a news release. “M y vision for this cit y is to see LRT run from Orléans in the east to Kanata in the west, and from downtown to Riverside South and Barrhaven. But this can- not be built in a da y , or a y ear, or even a decade. We put our resources where we need them first,

Ottawa | There will be labour peace for city workers in Ottawa and its wards. The Canadian Union of Public Emplo y ees local 503 (CUPE) has ratified the agreement reached with the Cit y of Ottawa in April. The union repre- sents 6300 municipal emplo y ees. “I am pleased that CUPE local 503 members have ratified this tentative agreement,” stated Ma y or Jim Watson in a news release. “I believe this is a fair contract that represents a respon- sible use of taxpa y er dollars, while at the same time respecting our dedicated and skilled em- plo y ees.” The agreement is now set to go before Ottawa cit y council June 13 for approval based on rec- ommendations from its finance and economic development committee. The committee was set to review the document during its June 5 meeting. Contract details remain confidential until both sides have voted approval.

Rockland | School is almost ready to let out for the summer and that means students of all ages and sizes will out and about enjoying themselves. Several items for council during the last few months concerned renewal of agreements with the school districts on the Before and After School program that helps extend the available da y care services in the cit y . Several local schools are designated as Before and After program sites. This y ear the Cit y of Clarence-Rockland and the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) will extend the arrangement into the summer months. Council approved during its June 11 regular session a resolution for an amendment to the 2011 agreement with the UCDSB to pro- vide a Before and After School program for Jul y and August at Rockland Public School.

À la fin, Jacques Archambault a réclamé la démission de M. Serrurier. D’emblée, ce dernier a refusé. « La réponse est non. Lorsque je me suis présenté pour le poste, il y a sept ans, j’ai fait appel à un avocat afin de m’assurer que je ne contrevenais pas à la loi », a déclaré le conseiller. Celui-ci a ajouté qu’il était prêt à se présenter en cour, le cas échéant.

Ce n’est que le lendemain que l’incident a été rapporté aux autorités. La PPO a contacté des gardes de sentiers du Club de VTT dont le gardien en chef, Greg Oliver. En moins de 20 minutes, ceux-ci était prêts à intervenir. M. Oliver a confié son histoire au journal. « Un heure après avoir été contacté par les policiers sollicitant notre aide, j’étais en chemin sur mon VTT, dans la forêt Larose. J’ai eu la bonne fortune de tomber sur la personne que tout le monde cherchait », a confié M. Greg Oliver.
Lorsqu’arrivé sur les lieux, il a bien remarqué la victime épuisée et déshydratée. On raconte également que l’homme avait souffert de mul- tiples piqûres d’insectes. « Il était très heureux de me voir arriver », raconte Greg Oliver. La victime avait auparavant été retrouvée par une personne en promenade. Toutefois, cette dernière n’avait aucune idée de sa position ex- acte, nécessaire pour les policiers. « Moi et ma conjointe avons des frissons

Des représentants de la Gendarmerie royale du Canada, de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario et des Services d’ambulances de Prescott et Russel étaient de passage à l’école le 7 juin dernier pour leur présenter un trophée et une plaque commémorative et autres articles souvenir dans le cadre de ce programme de sensibilisation.

Rockland | Champion athlete Ashlea Maddex now has a more solid sign of support from the City of Clarence-Rockland as she prepares for the upcoming Canadian nationals in track and field and what could prove to be an early chance at achieving her dream of competing in the Olympic Games. The Annual Mayor’s Golf Tournament provides fundraising aid to a variety of local causes. This year the recreational event will help support Maddex in her quest. One of the first items on the June 11 council agenda was a resolution to dedicate $1500 out of the net revenue from the 2011 Mayor’s Golf Tournament to the trust fund for Ashlea Maddex set up through Athletics Canada. The fund will help cover Maddex’s travel and other expenses related to her international and national hurdles competition season this year. Council members gave unanimous and swift approval to the resolution. Ashlea Maddex is seeing solid support standing behind her as she pursues her goal of making a name for herself on the inter- national athletic scene. Clarence-Rockland council has agreed make a pledge to a trust fund set up for Maddex’ travel expenses.

Clarence-Rockland | City council is looking ahead to when the next bill comes due for po- lice services in Clarence-Rockland. The city has a reserve fund for policing and it contains about $114,500. Last year’s police ser- vices contract assessment resulted in a credit of about $31,000 for the city. Council approved a resolution during its June 11 regular session to put the credit in the police service reserve.

L’animation de la soirée était assurée par les en- seignants Josiel Gour et Melissa Côté-Leblanc. « Un événement aussi spécial qu’un Gala du Mérite est le point culminant d’une année rem- plie d’activités académiques, sportives et para- scolaires dans lesquelles de nombreux ensei- gnants, partenaires de la communauté, incluant vous, chers parents, et de nombreux élèves ont
été impliqués », a affirmé M. Gour. Comme tous les ans, le Gala du mérite sou- ligne le dévouement et l’apport exceptionnel d’un élève en lui offrant le Grand Méritas. Cette année, le prix Grand Méritas a été remis à Sophie Luesby, élève de 12e année. Dès son arrivée en 9e année à l’Escale, elle s’est grandement impli- quée dans la vie de l’école. Elle s’est impliquée dans divers comités pour les sports parascolaires tout en repoussant ses limites. Sophie à bien su équilibrer vie sociale et vie scolaire. Cela se reflète notamment dans ses résultats scolaires forts impressionnants en langues, mathéma- tiques et en sciences. Le Gala du mérite souligne également les élèves qui se sont impliqués dans leur école après les heures de classe. La Distinction para- scolaire a été remise aux élèves Janelle Lacasse et Véronique Roy qui, toutes deux, partagent une passion pour l’écriture et la littérature fran- çaise. Cette passion leur a valu une victoire au concours « Les mordus des mots ». Elles seront donc publiées dans un recueil de récits identi- taires. La Distinction scolaire revient à l’élève ayant ré- alisé un parcours académique hors de l’ordinaire. Le méritas a été remis à Benoît Richer. Malgré les

OPH officials note that West Nile virus is “a permanent reality” in Ontario now and that a regular annual mosquito control and awareness campaign is a necessity. The 2012 control program is similar to those of past years. The OPH will manage a public educa- tion campaign focusing on yard care and house- hold tips to reduce the number of potential breeding places for mosquitoes. That includes using pool coverings when possible, emptying out any standing water in buckets, used tires, bird baths, and other objects. Homeowners are also urged to use a biologi- cal larvacide on any large bodies of standing wa- ter in their yards like huge puddles, fish ponds or
For rural septic systems, sewage lagoons, and other non-surface water systems, a chemical lar- vacide is recommended to kill mosquito larvae. The City of Ottawa will be doing mosquito- control using larvacide on municipal proper- ties. Use of chemical fogs or other means to kill adult mosquitoes are a final resort and only for extreme need situations. Residents are also urged to use insect repel- lent containing DEET when outside. Also try to wear clothing that covers the legs and arms. Ottawa | The unseasonal wet June weather has been good for gardens and also good for creating the perfect breeding conditions for mosquitoes. Ottawa Public Health (OPH) launches its an- nual mosquito control program, starting June 10 and continuing until mid-October. The focus of the program is to control the spread of mosquito larvae and thus reduce the chance of West Nile virus gaining a hold in the area. Not all breeds of mosquitoes are carriers of West Nile virus but to the average person, those that do are almost identical in appearance to
