NEW FIREFIGHTER Alfred-Plantagenet Township council confirmed the appointment of France Patry as a new addition to the volunteer firefighter ranks for the Alfred Village fire station.– Gregg Chamberlain COMMUNITY CENTRE UPGRADE The Vankleek Hill Community Centre needs upgrading and Champlain Township will ask for help from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). The building, which houses both the community centre and the arena, was built more than 40 years ago. If approved the township could get up to 73 per cent of the money needed towards the cost of the upgrades. Charlebois was ordered to clean up the site but has since gotten a delay on the order while the ministry reviews the file. Charlebois still wants to develop the property for a recycling operation. But Mayor Robert Kirby indicated, in an earlier interview, that the township has no immediate plans to sell the property now. Mounds of unwanted trash still occupy a site near the Village of Saint-Eugène as a would-be developer tries to convince East Hawkesbury Township council not to bury his plans for a recycling operation. François Charlebois met with council during its October 15 session, to argue for a chance to see his proposed recycling centre project up and running. The land located south of the village now belongs to the township, after it was seized from its original owner, Sayed Abdullah Ahmad of Toronto, for non-payment of taxes. Ahmad was originally partner with Char- lebois on a plan to develop the site for a recycling operation. “Use strong passwords for email accounts,” stated the OPP advisory. “That means using both capital and lower-case letters in the password and also including random numbers and special symbols like #, @, %, or &, to make the password more difficult for a hacker to predict. Change the password on a regular basis.” Other cybersecurity advice includes being alert to any anonymous or unsolicited emails which demand personal information or imme- diate payment of an alleged bill or account. That includes those who claim to be from the Canadian Revenue Service or Amazon. Backup all your critical files to an external
hard drive or flash drive which is removable. Keep all computer security systems updated. Be careful on social media about sharing any personal information. Parents should also talk to their children about safe and unsafe use of social media and about cyberbullying. Information to help with those discussions is available at www. cybertip.ca. Les prix incluent le cout de l’ingénierie, de l’équipement, de la main-d’œuvre, de la mise en service et des taxes de vente. M. Beauchamp a tenu à souligner que « l’ammoniac constitue le standard dans l’industrie. » La Ville n’a tout de même pas pris de décision concrète en matière de système de réfrigération. « Aucune décision n’a été prise à savoir quelle option la Ville devrait adopter ce qui se fera à une date ultérieure, expliquait la mairesse. » Le budget prévisionnel pour le remplace- ment du système se chiffre à 2,1 millions de dollars, un montant qui, idéalement pour Hawkesbury, serait partagée avec les gouvernements provincial et fédéral. Hawkesbury council approved a bylaw, based on staff recommenda- tions, to set conditions and terms for temporary camping at l’ile du Chenail, to help encourage local tourism. Local amateur radio enthusiasts are ready to jump in and help Champlain Township officials the next time a major disaster situation arises in the area. “Amateur radio coverage is like having an insurance policy or a spare tire,” said Michael Hickey of the Prescott-Russell Amateur Radio Club (PRARC). “You have it just in case.” Hickey made a presentation during the October 8 Champlain Township Council ses- sion for a partnership between the club and the municipality for setting up a permanent emergency amateur radio system to serve the community in case of a major disas- ter situation. He noted that home-based amateur radio predates the Internet and UIF8PSME8JEF8FC As long ago as the late 1940s and early 1950s, amateur radio enthusiasts chatted with each other around the globe, and also served as an extra means of communication with the outside world for communities cut off by disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, and major flooding.
