A global city

4 | Head of Estates Engineering

Manchester is a great global city, an amazing place to live, study, work and visit.

It is one of the UK’s liveliest cultural hotspots, with galleries, libraries and museums to rival the best in the world. As the world’s first industrialised city, Manchester has its roots firmly in innovation, creativity and business. It is a stimulating and enriching place, attracting and retaining a broad talent pipeline and deserving of its ever-growing recognition as the original modern city. With world-class transport and access to the rest of the UK and beyond, Manchester is truly a well-connected, international city. It’s a major hub for innovation and has one of the biggest creative and digital sectors in the UK. Exciting plans for an International Screen School in Manchester will further reinforce this, attracting more key creative players to our city, one that is definitely open for business. As the biggest UK centre for business, financial and professional services outside of London, many global banking, science and technology corporations have their headquarters here in Manchester. With over 70,000 students, attracted to the city from all over the world, Manchester is the second largest student city in the UK. Everything that Manchester represents – a global, cutting-edge, creative, innovative city that is known for doing things first – infuses our culture here at Manchester Metropolitan University.

A leading, modern university with a rich heritage

and its staff and alumni include more than 80 published poets and novelists, who between them have won almost every literary prize going. We are not only ambitious for ourselves, but also for our students. We have recently initiated a large-scale business change programme that will comprehensively transform the processes and technology we deploy to engage with students – from the first point of contact through to graduation and their continued journey as alumni of the University. This change programme will ensure that students are at the heart of our University and transform the ways in which we work together. We deliver outstanding research that addresses the biggest challenges facing contemporary society. 85% of our research impact is rated world-leading and internationally excellent and we rose 12 places in the Times Higher Education rankings for the quality of our REF2014 submission. The quality of our research is articulated through distinctive areas of impact that help us to stand out from the crowd. We are creative, innovative and driven by a curiosity for new ideas. Our confidence is matched by our achievements; we are the top modern university for the power of research in allied healthcare disciplines and have outstanding research in biomedical science, education, sociology, poetry and creative writing, and art and design. Research with impact

Ranked among the top universities in the world, we are proud of our 19th century origins, and excited by our future as a modern, metropolitan institution, engaged with the challenges of the 21st century. In the last ten years we have transformed our estate through a major capital investment programme, and will continue to invest to ensure that our facilities, buildings and public spaces meet the aspirations of our students, teachers and researchers. Our ambitious plans will change the shape of our University and our city. The next phase of our estates programme sees a further £400m+ committed to our campus, including exciting plans for the Manchester Poetry Library in 2019 and the International Screen School Manchester in 2021. Every day the work that takes place across the University advances knowledge and transforms lives. Take, for example, our new Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre, which is helping to power everything from our homes to the cars we drive via hydrogen fuel cells that create green and emission- free energy. Meanwhile, we are also a world leader in the potentially ground-breaking area of graphene electrochemistry, working extensively in both its manufacture and applications to further knowledge in critical areas such as energy storage. The Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy is Director of the Manchester Writing School, one of the largest centres for education and training in creative writing in the country. The Writing School delivers research and teaching in all the major literary forms Ambitious and forward-thinking

Our approach We are a great modern university, in a great global city, here to make an impact on Manchester, our nation and beyond. Our driving ambition is to discover and disseminate knowledge, and make higher education accessible and beneficial to all those with the passion and ability to succeed. We work closely with our city, with business, the community and our academic peers – locally, nationally and internationally – to be inventive and creative, generate great opportunities, and enable our students, colleagues and everyone whose lives we touch to make an impact.

The following themes drive Manchester

Metropolitan and make us the bold, ambitious, creative

and innovative University we are today.

Place Bringing our strategy to life

You can feel the energy. In the place. In the buildings. In the students and staff. You can sense the determination to succeed. Manchester Metropolitan is a great modern university, in a great global city, and we share the same drive and spirit to explore, create, invent, re-invent and make the world take notice.

Ambition Setting the bar higher to make more of an impact

Partnership Reaching out to push the boundaries of the possible Education, and particularly higher education, should always be a collaborative process, and here at Manchester Metropolitan our world is enriched and our achievements made more effective through partnership at every level.

We are ambitious and happy to shout about it. Ambitious for our students. Ambitious for our staff. For our partners. And for ourselves as an academic institution. We expect a lot from everyone who studies and works here. We set high standards and measure our success by the impacts we make academically, in business and society.

Sustainability Working hard now and in the future to help craft a better world Higher education exists in an increasingly dynamic, demanding and competitive world, where to stand still is to go backwards. At Manchester Metropolitan, we have a conscious cultural commitment to maintaining our energy levels and driving up academic and creative standards, achievements in research and community engagement.

Community Making a contribution not just to one community, but to many

We are an active, energetic and engaged university, putting our thinking and ideas, our research and knowledge, to work in the real world. Our staff, students and alumni contribute not only to the Manchester Metropolitan community, but to all the communities and lives we touch.

Outstanding teaching and student experience

We have a global ambition, building purposeful collaborations that benefit students, research and the city region. Staff and students from all over the world find a warm welcome in our University. They enrich our community, widen our horizons, and give flight to our ambitions.

We have a forward-looking, dynamic approach to teaching, learning and the holistic student experience (including facilities, course delivery, content, support, employability and environment). Students are at the heart of our University. Every contact counts. We all make a difference. We have committed to major investment in our teaching and learning environments, including a new Arts and Cultural hub at the heart of the campus, adding further to the outstanding teaching and learning environment for our students. Focusing around our research strengths, we are building a research-rich culture across the University, developing academic colleagues and attracting talented researchers to join them, and providing members of the University with outstanding support and the environment to succeed. With research applications nationally and internationally, our discoveries and innovations will shape business and enterprise for the 21st century. Our interdisciplinary approach generates unexpected, innovative and impactful outcomes. Researchers from the School of Architecture are working alongside engineers and computer scientists to enable the Greater Manchester city region to make ‘smart’ improvements to its services for residents, using technology such as sensors and data analysis. Meanwhile, the CityVerve Project uses the Internet of Things to revolutionise transport systems, energy efficiency and community engagement. Research

Engaged with business

We cultivate multiple relationships. Developed in partnership, our academic offer creates opportunities for our students, drives business productivity and innovation, and promotes research and knowledge transfer. We support, and are supported by, the business community. Our ground-breaking ‘Unit X’ enables students from the Manchester School of Art to work in interdisciplinary collaborations to deliver projects for clients in the city. The Crime and Wellbeing Big Data Centre combines criminology and the analysis of big data to help Greater Manchester Police improve efficiency and how policing is delivered in communities. Leading the sector in the development of higher and degree apprenticeships, we are poised to meet the exponential growth in employer demand for work-based learning programmes stimulated by the apprenticeship levy. We currently supply 17% of the total 1,000 degree apprenticeships nationally, working with household names from both public and private sectors including AstraZeneca, BAE Systems, Barclays Bank Plc, the BBC, Imperial War Museum, Manchester City Council, Thales Group, United Utilities and Virgin Trains. Driven by quality, we are dynamic and responsive and have a forward-looking approach to the development of our curriculum, facilities and offer to staff, students and partners. We are innovative and creative; continually evolving, never standing still. Our recently announced International Screen School Manchester will combine creative and craft skills with technical and digital know-how for content on everything that depends on a screen. It will pioneer a dynamic approach to research and learning, training the next generation of talent to enable Manchester and the UK to grow and compete internationally across the digital and media sectors. Progressive and market focused

Estates Investment Programme

22 | Head of Estates Engineering

In March 2017, the University Board of Governors approved the ten-year Estate Strategy (2017 – 2027). The Estate Strategy sets out a framework through which the development of the estate will support and enable the University Strategy. It will focus upon developing our existing presence within Manchester city centre and the Oxford Road corridor to support our academic ambition and reinforce the centrality of the University to the city and our community. It is a key enabler of success and of the continued delivery of a high quality student and staff experience in an increasingly competitive sector. In June 2017, the University approved the complimentary five year £341m Estates Investment Programme (2017 – 2022). The investment programme outlines a range of projects that will contribute significantly towards the student experience, increase our research capabilities and improve the public spaces that connect our buildings.

The programme encompasses a range of major developments and tactical refurbishment projects as follows. The six main transformational projects include: • The Arts and Humanities development, located on the old Mabel Tylecote plot, will create an inspirational venue on the Oxford Road corridor for Theatre, Creative Writing and Multimedia Journalism. • The Science and Engineering development will significantly increase the university’s capabilities and profile within key research areas. • The new International Screen School Manchester will be home to an interdisciplinary digital skills powerhouse, supporting the growth of a priority sector in the regional economy. • An enhanced offering for sport which would bring together all of our activities to deliver an optimal environment for academics, performance athletes and recreational athletes to excel. This will include world-leading research, high-quality academic courses and support for all to participate in sport for recreational and health-related reasons. • Strategic investment in the Student Residential portfolio to increase the proportion and quality of university centrally controlled beds. • The refurbishment of 6 Great Marlborough Street for use as professional services office accommodation to facilitate numerous projects on the retained academic estate. Other planned investments include improvement of our public realm spaces, the installation of an energy centre and heat network to provide utility resilience, additional facilities at Platt Lane and Sugden in support of the participation sport strategy and a number of ‘business as usual’ projects to protect the student experience. Projects within the programme are in various stages of development. The first major project to be delivered will be the refurbishment of 6 Great Marlborough Street in summer 2018. The Arts and Humanities development is well matured and contractors will start on site in the coming months.
