CHANGE Big

Paint has a way of transforming space A dull room can feel smaller, colder, and forgotten, while a thoughtful coat of paint can completely shift how it’s experienced. Colour influences mood in subtle but powerful ways: soft neutrals can calm, deep tones can add intimacy, and bright shades can bring energy and movement into an otherwise static environment. Beyond emotion, paint also protects and preserves. It shields surfaces from wear, moisture, and time itself, extending the life of buildings and objects that might otherwise deteriorate. Fresh paint can signals renewal in homes, it can mark new beginnings without structural change or major expense. What makes paint so remarkable is its efficiency. With relatively little cost or disruption, it can redefine atmosphere, restore pride in a place, and shift how people feel the moment they walk in. Best thing is, if you don’t like it, you just repaint.......

Buying your first home is an exciting milestone but preparation is the key to making the journey smooth and successful

First-home buyers should start by understanding their budget and getting pre-approval from a lender, so they know exactly what they can afford before falling in love with a property. Next, research is essential. Explore different suburbs, compare property prices, and consider lifestyle factors such as transport, schools, and future growth potential. Don’t rush—patience can make a big difference in finding the right home at the right price. It’s also important to factor in additional costs beyond the purchase price, including stamp duty, legal fees, inspections, and moving expenses. Engaging a trusted real estate agent can help guide you through the process and highlight suitable properties.

Finally, be prepared to act when the right opportunity comes along. In competitive markets, well-prepared buyers have the advantage. With the right planning and support, buying your first home can be a rewarding and confident step into property ownership.

Winter Herb Gardening Made Simple

Rockingham

Growyourown Herbs

Fresh Herbs, Even in Winter Growing herbs in winter is very doable, you just need to work with the conditions instead of fighting them. The key is light, warmth, and drainage. Start by choosing hardy herbs like rosemary, thyme, parsley, oregano, and chives. These handle cooler temperatures better than softer herbs like basil. If you are planting in pots, make sure they have good drainage holes so the roots do not sit in water. Use a quality potting mix that stays loose rather than heavy soil. Place your herbs where they can get as much light as possible. A north-facing or shaded spot will slow them right down, so a sunny windowsill, covered patio, or greenhouse-style space works best. If natural light is limited, even moving them around during the day helps. Water less in winter. The soil takes longer to dry out, so overwatering is the most common mistake. Only water when the top layer feels dry to the touch. Protect them from frost if temperatures drop too low. A simple cover, moving pots closer to the house, or using a small cloche can make a big difference. Trim lightly to encourage new growth, and do not harvest too aggressively. With a bit of care, herbs will keep producing right through winter.

Little hands grow big trees

Planting Roots for the Next Generation Growing fruit trees in Perth in winter is one of the best times to set your garden up for success. The cooler months give trees a chance to settle in without the stress of extreme heat, making it ideal for planting, pruning, and preparing for strong spring growth. In Perth’s Mediterranean climate, winter is mild but wet, which helps young trees establish deep roots. Some of the best fruit trees to grow here include citrus like lemons, limes, and oranges, as well as deciduous varieties such as apples, pears, peaches, plums, figs, and apricots. These all cope well with local conditions when planted at the right time. Winter is also the main pruning season. Removing dead or crowded branches helps shape the tree and encourages healthier fruit later on. It might feel harsh at first, but it actually improves long term growth and yield. Adding mulch around the base helps retain moisture and protect roots from sudden cold snaps. Just keep it away from the trunk. By the time spring arrives, trees planted or cared for in winter are already established and ready to burst into growth, giving you a stronger, healthier harvest later on. The Soul of Morocco and ease of open air

DEFININGSPACE

without closing it in!

Built for Evenings That Refuse to End Winter has a way of pushing people indoors. Doors close earlier, windows stay shut longer, and outdoor spaces get treated like they’re off duty until spring. But patios don’t need to be like that. Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you stay inside. This is actually when we start looking at the outdoors differently. A patio in winter is not about pretending it is summer. It is about leaning into what winter already gives you. The moment a firepit is going, everything changes. What was an empty, unused space suddenly becomes where everyone wants to be. People naturally gather around it. Not because they have to, but because it feels good. The cold air is still there, but it makes the fire feel even better. You notice the warmth more. You stay longer. Conversations stretch out without anyone really thinking about the time. An outdoor TV takes it in another direction. Watching a game or a movie outside in winter sounds unusual until you actually do it. You wrap up in a jacket or a blanket, sit under the open sky, and it just works.

Rockingham WHERELIGHTDANCES and Shade Lingers!

GARDENING WinterTips

For those who love the Modern Outdoors

Where the Garden Breathes Around You It feels familiar but also different in a good way. You are still doing the same things you would do inside, just with fresh air around you. Winter patios are also about small changes. Softer lighting instead of bright overheads. Cushions, rugs, heaters, anything that makes the space feel less like a “summer only” area and more like an extension of the home. It does not need to be perfect. It just needs to feel comfortable enough that you actually want to be out there. There is also a mindset shift that comes with it. A lot of people treat outdoor spaces like they are seasonal, something to switch off when the weather changes. But winter challenges that idea. It makes you ask why fresh air and open space should only be for warm days.

They should not be.

Because winter patios are not about toughing it out. They are about using the season instead of avoiding it. A cold night becomes a reason to light the firepit. A clear winter sky becomes part of the experience. And suddenly, staying outside does not feel like something you push through. It feels like the point.

Home and Lifestyle Tips

Your Autumn Home Maintenance

The cooler weather is settling in and it’s the ideal time to tackle those important home maintenance jobs. A little preparation now helps keep your home warm, dry and comfortable during the colder months. It can also stop small issues from turning into bigger, more expensive problems. Use this simple autumn home maintenance checklist to help get your home ready for winter. Check for damp and mould During winter, many Australian homes are cold and poorly ventilated, which can lead to mould and damp. Tackling any damp issues early helps prevent expensive structural damage, ensures your home is easier to heat, and reduces health issues like asthma and allergies. Look for signs of mould in bathrooms, kitchens and laundries Clean small areas with a vinegar and water solution Open windows and doors during the day to improve ventilation Use extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms or a dehumidifier to reduce moisture levels Avoid drying washing inside and ventilate the laundry when using the dryer. Check lighting and safety around your home Shorter days mean you’ll rely more on lighting inside and outside your home, so it’s worth checking all lights work properly. It’s also important to test your smoke alarms before winter, as house fire risk increases during colder months when heaters, electric blankets and dryers are used more often. Replace old or burnt out light bulbs Switch to energy efficient bulbs to save money Test all smoke alarms and replace batteries if needed Check outdoor lighting and fit motion sensor lights for better visibility Warm your home with the sun Give your windows a thorough clean to more natural light to filter in and warm your home during shorter days. Open curtains and blinds during the day to let the sun in and close them in the evening to keep heat inside. Check that curtains fully cover the windows to reduce heat loss.

Check the roof and clear out gutters Leaves and debris build up quickly in autumn causing blocked gutters and clogging up drainage systems. Regularly clearing out any blockages helps prevent water damage from overflow and ensures water drains away from your home. Clear leaves and debris from gutters and downpipes Check water is free flowing through the drainage system Install gutter guards to prevent leaves and debris build- up Inspect the roof for cracked tiles or damaged shingles Check flashing around chimneys and skylights for any gaps Fix small leaks or damage before winter rains arrive Get your heating ready for winter Before the temperatures drop, it’s a good idea to check your heating system is working efficiently. Having a warm, dry home is not only comfortable; it also helps lower power bills. Service your heat pump and clean or replace filters Check that your heating system is running properly Clean out wood burners and remove ash build-up Have chimneys inspected for blockages if you plan to use a fireplace Seal gaps around doors and windows Small gaps around doors and windows can let a surprising amount of heat escape. In many homes, as much as 25% of heat loss occurs through small cracks, gaps and poorly sealed openings. Sealing these gaps with weather stripping, foam seals or draught stoppers helps prevent warm air escaping and cold air from getting in. Inspect doors and windows for cracks or worn seals Use adhesive foam strips or weather seals to close gaps Place draught stoppers at the bottom of doors Check exterior walls for cracks that need sealing Consider upgrading older windows to double glazing

Keeping on top of seasonal maintenance protects the value of your home. It helps prevent costly repairs and ensures your home is comfortable during the months. If you’re planning repairs, renovations or home improvements this autumn, a Mortgage Express broker could help. They can provide advice about refinancing to cover these costs and help you explore finance options.

Pets and

Rockingham

Burning incense around pets can seem harmless, but it carries real risks that are often overlooked. The biggest concern is smoke itself. Incense produces fine particulate matter that can irritate the airways of cats, dogs, and especially birds. Pets with asthma, chronic respiratory issues, or flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds are particularly vulnerable, and even short exposure can cause discomfort or breathing difficulty. Another issue is toxicity from ingredients. Some incense contains essential oils or fragrance compounds that can be harmful to animals. Oils such as tea tree, eucalyptus, cinnamon, citrus, and lavender are especially risky for cats, and repeated exposure in enclosed spaces can increase the danger.

Lower-quality or synthetic incense may also release chemical residues when burned, adding further respiratory stress. There is also a basic safety risk from the flame or ember itself. Curious pets can easily knock over incense holders or get too close, leading to burns or fire hazards.

If incense is used, precautions matter: keep spaces well ventilated, burn it in open areas where pets can leave freely, and place it securely out of reach. However, the safest option is to avoid burning incense around animals altogether or use non-combustion alternatives to reduce exposure to smoke and chemicals.

WINTER VEGE CHOWDER

INGREDIENTS

2 tbsp olive oil 1 large brown onion, finely diced 2 leeks, white and pale green sections only, thinly sliced

EASY DIRECTIONS

Step 1 Set your multi cooker to sear mode on low. Step 2

2 celery sticks, finely diced 1 large carrot, finely diced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tsp smoked paprika 2 tsp harissa paste

Add oil, onion, leek, celery, and carrot. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring sometimes, until soft and fragrant. Step 3 Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Stir in paprika, harissa, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook for 30 seconds until it smells aromatic. Step 4 Add potato, cauliflower, corn, and zucchini. Stir to coat everything in the spice mix. Pour in the stock and mix well. Put the lid on, set the vent to seal, then choose soup mode for 20 minutes and start. Step 5 When finished, release the pressure and open the lid. Scoop out about one third of the mixture and blend it with a stick blender until smooth, then return it to the pot and stir. Add cream and mix through. Adjust seasoning if needed. Step 6 Serve in bowls, add a spoon of pesto on top, sprinkle parsley, and enjoy with crusty bread.

1 tsp fresh thyme leaves Sea salt and black pepper 500g starchy potatoes (such as Sebago), peeled, cut into 2cm pieces 2 cups cauliflower florets 2 corncobs, kernels removed 1 zucchini, deseeded, cut into 1cm pieces 1L vegetable stock ½ cup cream ⅓ cup sundried tomato pesto Chopped fresh parsley leaves, to serve

The secret is crusty sourdough perfect for soaking up the spiced chowder adding texture warmth and balance to every bite perfectly.

WARM MINIMALISM AND and Seamless Integration

Earthy Palettes & Warm Metals New Neutrals: Bright clinical whites and cool greys are out, replaced by soft whites, alabaster, taupe, mushroom, and grounded clay tones. Muted greens and earthy browns are also highly popular to connect the kitchen to the natural landscape. Mixed Metals: Instead of polished chrome, designers are opting for brushed brass, brushed nickel, and gunmetal for tapware and hardware. Natural Materials & Refined Texture Warm Timbers: Mid-tone timbers (like Walnut and smoked oak) are dominating cabinetry and flooring, bringing depth and soul back into the kitchen. Mineral Surfaces: Instead of solid quartz, expect neutral porcelain and natural stones (like travertine) that provide subtle textures, and softer, honed or matte finishes. Textured Joinery: Fluted panels, reeded glass, and fine detailing like slim- profile Shaker doors are heavily featured. "The Disappearing Kitchen" Concealed Storage: With open-plan living acting as the standard, kitchens are designed to hide the mess. Butler's pantries and tall, fitted utility zones are essential. Integrated Appliances: Rangehoods are frequently plastered, tiled, or hidden behind matching stonework. Fridges and dishwashers sit seamlessly behind bespoke cabinetry.

Fluid, Organic Shapes Curved Islands: Soft, rounded corners on island benchtops—particularly bullnose edges—are a standout feature, making kitchens feel more like a welcoming, social gathering space rather than just a workstation. Statement Features & Accessories Layered Lighting: Track lighting and dramatic, sculptural pendants over the island are replacing harsh, all-over spotlights, perfectly paired with discreet task lighting underneath cabinets. Pot Fillers: Moving from a luxury upgrade to a staple inclusion for home cooks, integrated pot fillers are frequently requested in high-end projects.

The Rise of Smarter

Makeovers

For years, renovating a kitchen meant one thing: rip everything out and start again. But that mindset is changing fast. Across Australia, homeowners are discovering that full-scale renovations aren’t always necessary. If a kitchen’s structure still works, there’s often no reason to demolish it. Instead, modern kitchen makeovers focus on upgrading what matters most, cabinetry, benchtops, lighting, and storage without the chaos of a full rebuild. This approach, used by companies like Kitchen Makeover Solutions, delivers a refreshed, modern kitchen without the time, cost, or disruption of traditional renovations.

The benefits go beyond convenience. Makeovers are typically faster, more affordable, and far less wasteful. Instead of sending usable materials to landfill, they reuse existing structures and replace only what’s needed. This makes them a more sustainable choice for today’s environmentally conscious homeowners. Just as importantly, a kitchen makeover can still dramatically improve both function and appearance. Smarter layouts, updated finishes, and improved storage can completely change how a space feels and performs without altering its footprint. In the end, kitchen makeovers are redefining what “renovation” means. It’s no longer about starting over. It’s about improving intelligently, with less waste and more impact.
