At the end of next May, Dennis O’Grady steps down as general manager for the regio- nal conservation agency and looks forward to official retirement. Taking over as the new general manager for the South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) is Angela Coleman, the current director for property management and approvals at the SNC’s Finch headquarters. “On behalf of SNC’s board of directors, we are pleased to have Angela Coleman accept her new role at SNC,” stated Doug Thomp- son, SNC chairman, in a press release. “An- gela has demonstrated excellent leadership at SNC since she started her career with us in 2001. Given her skills, experience, and credentials, the position of general manager/ secretary-treasurer is a natural fit for her.” Native to the Crysler area, in the South Nation River watershed region, Coleman holds bachelor degrees in arts, education, and law from the University of Ottawa. Il n’y aura pas d’augmentation au taux d’impo- sition pour l’année 2017. Suite à la réévaluation des propriétés par MPAC en 2016, l’évaluation des propriétés résidentielles (maisons unifamiliales déta- chées) a diminué enmoyenne de 0.39 %, tan- dis que l’évaluation des propriétés agricoles a augmenté enmoyenne par 16.67 %. De ce fait, il y a environ 300 000 $ qui seront géné- rés de plus en taxes, ce qui représente une augmentation de 2.79 % du revenu neutre de l’année passée. The samples are just to help determine which of the two devices works best and also help set Canadian legal guidelines and standards for future roadside screening devices used for drug-testing of impaired drivers.

Christmas Wish Tree lightens up
A group of seven children brought special meaning to the annual Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) Foundation’s Christmas Wish Tree lighting ceremony, on Thursday, December 15. Students from Morrisburg Public School flipped the switch to light the massive tree in the hospital lobby while the Seaway Valley Singers serenaded the crowd. Kristen Casselman, Foundation managing director, thanked the students. “Santa will be very pleased to see that you were here, at the hospital, sharing your Christmas spirit with our patients. Thank you for coming today and for making such nice cards.” Before the ceremony, the students had toured the hospital to hand out handmade festive cards to patients - 527 cards in all! Kristen Casselman, Foundationmanag- ing director, thanked the students. “Santa will be very pleased to see that you were here, at the hospital, sharing your Christmas spirit with our patients.Thank you for coming to- day and for making such nice cards.” Before the ceremony, the students had toured the hospital to hand out handmade festive cards to patients - 527 cards in all! Nouvelle direction pour le Chœur du Moulin de Rockland Réjean Lafrance de Vankleek Hill a accepté de prendre la barre de la direction musicale du Chœur du Moulin, en janvier prochain, à la suite de l’annonce du départ de Denis Sau- mure qui demeurera au sein de la chorale en tant que choriste. « Réjean n’en est pas à ses premières armes dans la direction d’ensembles vocaux. Nous sommes assurés que Réjean saura relever le défi de la direction du Chœur du Moulin et amènera ses choristes vers d’autres belles expériences musicales », a précisé Nicole Charbonneau, présidente du Chœur du Moulin. Divers projets sont en préparation pour la nou- velle saison. Entre autres, la chorale présentera son concert du printemps le 7 mai prochain, conjointement avec le Chœur de Pom’ de La Petite Nation. De plus, le Chœur du Moulin représentera l’Ontario français lors du Festival de la Nouvelle-Acadie dans Lanaudière, en août prochain.

A red fox’s natural tendency is to flee

Record label owner releases mental health video Tara Shannon, a Russell professional singer songwriter and director, dedicated her December 2 nd “Amazing People Holiday Concert” to helping children in Canada, Nicaragua and Kenya. She was raising money for SchoolBOX, Hera Mis- sion, Project North and Debra Canada after a surprise appearance by Jonathan Pitre (through Facetime) in front of hundreds of guests. But that wasn’t the only surprise: Tara released an extremely emotional and inspirational video about mental health, with all proceeds going to help young people. The video includes a number of raw expressions of suffering and survival by young people. The kick off, Tara’s “Amazing People Holiday Concert”, featured local entertainers, including some from her own record label, Willow Sound Records. Generally active during the early hours of the night and wee hours of the morning, it can also adapt its schedule according to food available and be observed during the day. The red fox feeds on a large number of rodents such as mice, rats, marmots and squirrels. It is useful for controlling popula- tion explosions, which are common in some of these species.They will also feed on small livestock such as poultry, rabbits or other small newborn animals. The red fox doesn’t just eat meat, though. It is true that to see a fox in a place where people live is a strange sight and that no one should ever try to pet or corner a fox without expecting some kind of unwelcome behavior? However, in general, foxes are not especially dangerous to humans or to most pets. Usually, the best thing is leave foxes alone, but here are a few pointers on what to do about the most common fox concerns. Red foxes are found in all of Canada’s provinces and territories, making themone of the country’s most wide-spread mam- mals.The red fox generally lives on the edges of wooded areas, prairies and farmlands and often lives among people in cities and towns, where scavenging for foodmakes life easy. “The fox can get quite comfortable in residential areas like Embrun and Russell”, saidHeritageWildlifeManagement Director Paul Mussell. Fearful, suspicious and relatively intel- ligent, the red fox is rather solitary and ter- ritorial, sleeping in the open and keeping warmby wrapping itself with its long bushy tail. However, in the springtime, which is breeding season, is the only time when it lives in a den and family then becomes its social nucleus. Although quite a nuisance for homeown- ers, dens under porches, decks or sheds do represent a convenient spot for a fox family. If this were to occur, hazing rituals should encourage a sooner than later move. To do so, disturbing those unwanted residents by packing leaves, soil or mulch in den open- ings may be a humane harassment option. As well, placing urine-soaked kitty litter, sweat-soaked T-shirt or a pair of smelly socks or sneakers might even do the trick. However, if kits have started popping out, allowing daddy dog and mommy vixen to stay until the young are old enough to begin accompanying their parents on foraging outings is definitely the best option.

It also likes to eat plants, fruits and berries. Even when the red fox is not hungry, it will keep hunting and gathering food to store for its next meal, similar to squirrels. Mussell recommends not leaving any pet food outside, as it will attract foxes, not to mention coyotes. Moreover, making really loud noises may be an effective deterrent for these animals. “If there is no fear, that’s when the animals become bolder” added Paul Mussell. A typical adult cat is almost the same size as a fox and has a well-deserved reputation for self-defense and would therefore not likely become a prey. “Although the red fox may pose a threat to very small cats, they do not represent any danger unless they are sick, let’s say with mange or rabies” he explained. Firstly, mange is a class of skin diseases caused by parasiticmites leaving poor hairy coat and causing hair loss, especially around the tail. On the other hand, rabies is a saliva- spread virus that make them act strangely tame or gnaw on their limbs. However, the last rabid fox reported in Ontario was in 2009, according to the Ontario government website. Nonetheless, in order to avoid any risk of transmission of disease or infection, one should always be wary of foxes with unusual behavior and never handle or let one’s pet close to fox carcass or feces. Finally, pet own- ers should stay on top of any vaccinations needed. The red fox can adapt to a wide variety of shelters and food, which are offered in this region’s rich agricultural and abundant forest environment. This foxy animal may be a very prolific and opportunistic mam- mal, yet, it is mostly only guilty of being a chicken thief.

Un salon en l’honneur de Manon à l’Académie la Seigneurie

L’année dernière, le personnel de l’Aca- démie de la Seigneurie perdait ManonDi- gnard, une collègue et une amie, suite à un combat contre le cancer. Le 21 décembre dernier, lors de son souper du temps des Fêtes, on annonçait un projet en son hon- neur, notamment rendu possible grâce aux dons reçus lors de cette même soirée. Cet argent servira à créer le Salon de Manon , à la bibliothèque de l’école élémentaire. Manon Dignard a enseigné pendant plusieurs années à l’Académie ainsi qu’à l’école de la Rivière Castor à Embrun. Elle s’intéressait particulièrement à la littératie. « C’était sa spécialité et elle l’enseignait au primaire depuis quelques années d’ail- leurs », a fait valoir Josée Racine, une col- lègue et amie de Manon ainsi que la res- ponsable du projet. « Pour amasser des fonds, elle a écrit un livre lorsqu’elle était malade », a-t-elle pour- suivi. Son livre s’intitule Prendre le temps. Des membres de la famille de Manon étaient présents durant le souper afin de remettre les profits de la vente de celui-ci à l’école. De plus, des représentantes duDistrict 45 d’Estario, un regroupement d’enseignants à la retraite, étaient présentes afin de remettre

À titre d’information, le district franco- phone de Prescott-Russell existe depuis maintenant 10 ans et est très engagé au sein de la collectivité : « Nous avons contribué à la Popote rou- lante, la Maison des Arts, l’Association des artistes de Clarence-Rockland, lemonument de la francophonie de Hawkesbury, le village
d’antan de Saint-Albert, Haïti Papanou et maintenant le Salon deManon », a souligné Mme Poudrette-Gagnon. La présentation des dons fut grandement appréciée par le personnel de l’école. « Nous avons déjà commencé la décoration que vous aurez la chance de voir de façon offi- cielle lors de la semaine de l’Éducation, au mois demai », a déclaré la directrice de l’Aca- démie de la Seigneurie, Renée Bellehumeur. La salle, qui sera égayée des couleurs du léopard, accueillera de nombreux livres sous peu, grâce aux dons qui serviront à garnir la bibliothèque. De cette façon, l’œuvre de Manon, qui était d’encourager la littératie, se perpétuera pendant encore plusieurs années.
Les Dynamos soutiennent leur communauté
Les Dynamos et le comité de la pastorale de l’École secondaire catholique de Casselman ont, une fois de plus, démontré leur générosité envers la communauté de Casselman en cette période des Fêtes. La rencontre était une initiative duThéâtre la Barouette en collaboration avec le Conseil des arts de Prescott-Russell. L’objectif? Rapprocher les troupes de théâtre (professionnelles et communautaires) de la région. This was part of their 3 rd annual Baskets For event, each one supporting different groups and organizations. “We did the first one when I heard the story of Jonathan Pitre and felt like I had to do something,” said Kim- berly MacKinnon, teacher at RHS. “I asked my senior boys and girls if they wanted to
put on this event and they were all over it. I asked my friend Danik Lafleur from STA if he wanted to play against us and they were game. I planned and organized the event which raised over $2000 for Jonathan. Last year we did it for the Kawabunga group in Embrun and this year I decided to do it for the Russell Sports Dome, since a huge num-

Hosting Finland teams in Casselman The Eastern Ontario Wild AAA Hockey associa- tion and the Eastern Ontario AA Cobras Hockey Association are pleased to be hosting visiting AAA and AA teams from Finland.The games will be held in the Casselman J.R. Brisson Complex. The puck drop for AAA will be at 1:30 p.m. followed by the 3:15 p.m. AA game. The East- ern Ontario Hockey Association, known as AAA Wild, strives to provide young athletes with a high quality developmental experience while promoting teamwork, respect, commitment, and achievement in a structured, positive and dynamic environment.
