Meanwhile, all the electronic records for the company are safe in Cloud storage. Bergeron and some of his employees, along with family and friends, spent Sunday sorting through the office rubble to salvage mate- rials, including any paper records that may be still legible once they dry out. Staff were at the Bergeron garden supply centre, helping customers with home garden needs. Other employees were on the road making deliveries and dealing with lawn-and- garden service contracts.
It is still business as usual for Michel Bergeron and his staff at LandTech/ Bergeron in spite of a weekend fire that destroyed the main office and storage garage of the Rockland-based lawn and garden service and supply centre. Bergeron was busy Monday morning, trying to work out pay lists for all of his 40 employees, based on electronic records saved to the Cloud, and also paper files salvaged from the remains of the burnt-out front office. “Our main concern is making sure that FWFSZPOFIBTHPUUIFJSQBZuIFTBJEi8F don’t want them to lose out.” Just after 8 p.m., Saturday night, Bergeron got a call about a fire at the LandTech site on chemin de la Baie in Rockland. Fire fighter crews from all three of the Clarence-Rockland fire department stations responded to the situation and a support crew was also called in from the City of Ottawa’s Cumberland station, to help ensure a good supply of water for fighting the fire. “It was a significant fire event,” said Chief #SJBO8JMTPOPGUIF$MBSFODF3PDLMBOE'JSF Department on Monday. There was a pres- sure problem with the hydrant at the end of the Bay Road water supply line. Firefighters had to run hoses instead, from the hydrant back up the line near the Rona hardware building site. It delayed but didn’t stop fire

A separate group of firefighters kept hosing down the tanks, keeping them cool while their fellow firefighters dealt with
extinguishing the main fire. “The fire depart- ment did a good job,” Bergeron said. “I’m relieved that nobody got hurt.” Business as usual The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the origin of the fire was electrical, though the exact cause is un- known. Initial damage estimate is $450,000 to $500,000. The building is destroyed.

Paramedics from Prescott-Russell will continue answering calls for help from the City of Ottawa. But plans for a new “silent running” routine is just on tem- porary hold. Michel Chrétien, director of emergency services for the United Counties of Prescott- Russell (UCPR), reported that officials with the health and long-term care ministry for the new Progressive Conservative government are “interested” in the counties’ ongoing battle with the City of Ottawa over the larger municipality’s constant and excessive use of PR ambulance units to deal with its own emergency calls. Prescott-Russell residents must often wait when they call for an ambu- lance because all the PR units are occupied with calls from Ottawa. Chrétien noted the new government is also interested in finding a solution to the outstanding $1.5 million debt the city owes the counties for the past two years of using Prescott-Russell’s ambulance service for Ottawa calls. But first, the ministry officials who have taken over the file want the UCPR to hold off on plans for a new dispatch res- ponse protocol for dealing with the excessive call volume from Ottawa. This month was to be the start of a new “silent running” plan for the UCPR ambu- lance service. Prescott-Russell units would still answer dispatch calls to Ottawa as part of the “shared assistance” protocol for ambulance services in Ontario. But after dealing with a call from Ottawa, any UCPR unit will then mark itself as “unavailable for dispatch” until it has crossed back over into the Prescott-Russell region. The new protocol is tabled for the time being to allow the new ministry officials assigned to review the issue a chance to familiarize themselves with the situation. There is no deadline set yet for when the new provincial government will present a proposed solution. Suspects call residents advising that if they do not pay owed money they can be arrested. This summer a Limoges area woman was contacted by a “CRA officer” advising there were four allegations and that she would be brought to court. The complainant then received a call from what she believed to be the OPP’s local number. Suspects posed as a police officer demanding her SIN number. The OPP confirms that they would not make such calls and advises residents to not give out personal information.

Le mouvement Leadership féminin en action Prescott-Russell (LFAPR) a eu l’occasion de s’entretenir, le 24 juillet dernier, avec la ministre fédérale de l’Environnement et du Changement climatique Catherine McKenna, qui était de passage dans l’Est ontarien pour promouvoir les entreprises aux pratiques écoénergétiques. Mme McKenna était de passage, entre autres, à Clarence-Rockland, à Alfred, à Hawkesbury et à Vankleek Hill. Elle a passé une heure avec les collaboratrices du mouvement LFAPR au Restaurant Carole, à Hawkesbury. Pendant cette heure, elle s’est entretenue avec une vingtaine de femmes dont plusieurs candidates à l’élection munici- pale du 22 octobre prochain. Elle a souligné l’importance d’avoir plus de femmes qui s’avancent en politique si l’on veut atteindre

Maize Siding & Eavestroughing a franchi une étape importante. L’entreprise de Saint-Pascal-Baylon, qui se spécialise dans la vente et l’installation de gouttières et de revêtement de vinyle, célèbre son 30e anni- versaire de fondation cette année. L’histoire de la compagnie débute en septembre 1988 lorsqu’Alain et Paul Mai- sonneuve ont décidé d’unir leurs forces pour démarrer leur propre entreprise. Les deux frères avaient fait leurs armes pendant quelques années auparavant au sein de di- verses compagnies, un dans le revêtement extérieur et l’autre dans les gouttières. Au début, la compagnie concentrait ses activités dans le revêtement extérieur. Paul Maisonneuve a ajouté le volet des gouttières lorsqu’il a acheté l’équipement d’un cousin qui oeuvrait dans le domaine. L’entreprise a pris son véritable envol en 1997 lorsque les propriétaires ont décidé d’embaucher des représentants des ventes.
L’équipe grossit à mesure que le carnet de commandes se remplit. En 2001, Paul Maisonneuve devient l’unique propriétaire. Grâce à sa vision et persévérance, Maize Siding & Eavestroughing est devenue une des plus grandes entreprises de gouttières et de revêtement extérieur dans l’Est on- tarien. L’entreprise emploie aujourd’hui 38 personnes, dont 32 installateurs et six représentants des ventes. Plusieurs employés comptent de 15 à 20 ans d’ancienneté au sein de la compagnie. La deuxième génération est déjà en place pour assurer la continuité. Alexis, le fils de Paul, veut poursuivre le chemin tracé en conservant les valeurs qui sont à la base du succès de la compagnie. « La famille, les amis, la communauté, c’est très important », a soutenu Alexis. « Mon père a toujours fait en sorte d’encourager les organismes locaux. Aider ses proches est une priorité ».

Maize Siding & Eavestroughing reached an important milestone. The Saint-Pas- cal-Baylon company, which specializes in the sale and installation of exterior siding and eavestroughing, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The story of the company begins in September 1988 when Alain and Paul Mai- sonneuve decided to join forces and start their own company. The two brothers had gained experience with other companies in Ottawa, one in the installation of exterior siding and the other in eavestroughing. The siding was the main focus of the com- pany at the beginning. Paul Maisonneuve added the eavestroughing side a few years later after buying the equipment from a cousin. The company growth boomed in 1997 when the owners decided to hire sales re- presentatives. More employees were hired to meet the work orders.
In 2001, Paul Maisonneuve became the sole owner. Thanks to his perseverance and vision, Maize Siding & Eavestroughing grew into one of the biggest siding and eavestrou- ghing companies in Eastern Ontario. Today, the company hires 38 employees, including 32 installers and six sales representatives. Many employees have from 15 to 20 years of experience with the company. The second generation is already in place to continue the development. A community barbecue held in Rockland on Saturday, July 28 for Larry Manuel, a resident who is battling cancer, raised $1,824.40. The event was held in the afternoon in the parking lot of Parent Independent in Rockland. Burgers, hot dogs, chips and beverages were served. There was also a silent auction of 14 baskets donated by different businesses, crafters and vendors in Rockland. Danielle Godard, a Casselman resident who met Manuel while they were both volunteering during the flood relief in the spring of 2017, organized this fundraiser. Le Rockland Open , un tournoi de golf pour la communauté, a fait son retour le vendredi 10 août au Club de golf Rockland. L’édition originale du Rockland Open a été organisée pendant plus d’une vingtaine d’années au Club de golf Rockland, autrefois connu sous le nom Club de golf de l’Outaouais. La dernière édition du tournoi avait eu lieu en 2005. Le tournoi de cette année comprenait une variété de catégories pour accommoder tous les types de joueurs. Il y avait une classe de compétition régulière pour les golfeurs qui souhaitaient remporter le Rockland Open, mais il y avait aussi un certain nombre de catégories moins compétitives, pour les joueurs qui voulaient participer pour le plaisir. —photo Alexia Marsillo
