Raising the bar on raising boys

W E L C O M E

Dear Prospective Parent,

Cathedral School for Boys continues to define what it means to educate and raise boys. We devote each day to the spirited dialogue, dynamic lessons, and intentional character building that guide each young boy to engage in the way that best fits him, while he simultaneously develops empathy and respect for the world around him. We hold boys to the highest standards in the classroom and beyond. Cathedral is here to raise the bar on raising boys. Cathedral School for Boys is an Episcopal K-8 independent day school located next to Grace Cathedral on Nob Hill in San Francisco. Small classes, personal attention, and strong relationships among our dynamic faculty, motivated students, and caring parents create an ideal learning community that fosters the growth and development of each boy. We balance the best of proven educational instruction with intentional inclusion of modern practices. As an Episcopal school, we welcome and embrace families of all religious, ethnic, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds, and structures. Each boy enriches our community with his family’s experiences, and in doing so, helps prepare boys to be socially responsible leaders.

Cathedral is the thought leader in raising the kind of young men our world needs now.

Please come visit us at Cathedral School for Boys. We would love to share our extraordinary school with you.

Kind Regards,

Tara Boland Director of Admission

At Cathedral School for Boys, we provide an excellent education at the elementary level. Our commitment to intellectual inquiry and rigor allows boys to experiment, challenge themselves, succeed, and at times, fail in a safe environment. Cathedral boys think deeply about things that matter. Each student engages in a comprehensive study of English, math, science, social studies, history, world languages, P.E., and the arts, taught by talented, experienced, and committed teachers who are experts in their fields. Learning at Cathedral extends beyond the classroom. Our central location within the city allows us to step beyond the School grounds for field trips and service at all grade levels. Outdoor Education takes fourth-through sixth-grade boys outside the city where they push themselves physically and live in nature. In the Upper School, the boys participate in a week of “Intersession,” in which they explore classes such as “Entertainment, Production, & Podcasts,” “African American History & Culture,” or “An Introduction to our Legal System.” Service is woven through the entire Cathedral experience. It is a particular focus of the seventh grade when boys spend the year working with a school or nearby organization. While working with Cathedral’s partners, boys develop long-term relationships. Boys purposefully contribute and humbly learn from our neighbors. In the seventh or eighth grade, as part of our world language program, boys spend over a week in a Spanish- or Mandarin-speaking country, using their language skills to serve and learn from the communities with whom they are staying. In the eighth grade, each boy delivers a Chapel Talk in which he speaks about a meaningful life-lesson. Cathedral boys graduate prepared to be the leaders that our world needs now.

While parents choose Cathedral School for Boys because of the excellent education that their sons will receive, they also value the School’s commitment to character development.

Our faculty members design lessons to teach not just about academics, but instill life- lessons. This happens formally in the classroom, but teachable moments can arise at any time over the course of the day. Teachers leverage them not only to make the lessons stick, but to intentionally integrate life-lessons into the conversations. When they do, boys not only succeed academically, they succeed as empathetic humans. High schools tell us that Cathedral boys stand out for their academic preparation and exemplary citizenship and leadership. Cathedral boys attend the top high schools in the Bay Area in addition to national boarding schools. Our boys know themselves and how they best learn, allowing them to thrive.

Character education is part of everything we do: modeled, discussed, and encouraged in every word and deed. Character education has been a school focus for over 60 years.

In addition to their academic classes, Cathedral boys receive a well-rounded experience, rich in spirituality, the arts, athletics, and service. This allows boys to get to know themselves and the world around them. In Chapel, boys spend time in quiet reflection while listening to the wisdom of peers and teachers. They are given the space and time to think about their place in the bigger world. Traditions from many religions are shared and celebrated. Every boy takes P.E. every day. Art, Design & Engineering, and music and performing arts are integrated into each boy’s week. Boys perform on stage at least once each year. We have a robust instrumental music program, and a number of our boys participate in the world- renowned Grace Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys. In the Upper School, nearly every boy participates on at least one school athletic team. Our commitment to service is embedded in our School’s Mission. When students commit to supporting organizations of purpose and demonstrate commitment by performing ongoing service, they enjoy meaningful experiences with different communities, develop leadership skills, and see the importance of civic participation. Our location in the heart of San Francisco allows us to maintain service partnerships with neighboring organizations of great importance to our beloved city.

At Cathedral, we understand boys. We know that there are many ways to be a boy, and we approach each boy individually. Not only do our teachers appreciate “boy energy,” enthusiasm, spirited inquiry, and deep camaraderie, they specifically choose to teach at an all-boys school. Teachers design lessons that are hands-on, in small groupings, and incorporate physical movement. This dedication to understanding how boys learn is fundamental to our approach. We believe in the value of building character and helping boys learn to make responsible decisions. Cathedral is distinguished by a spirit of brotherhood and abiding friendship that exist within the classroom and extend across all grades. As the thought leader in raising the kind of men our world needs now, Cathedral School for Boys commits to presenting boys with myriad ways to pursue their interests, live their passions, and define themselves as people.

Cathedral School for Boys believes that all students benefit from a diverse student body. Academic discussions are more interesting, personal relationships are more enriching, and our awareness and understanding of and for each other is deepened. We strive to make a Cathedral education accessible to families regardless of their financial circumstances. To this end, we maintain one of the most generous financial assistance budgets in the Bay Area. We seek to attract a student body of strong academic potential, diverse in all of its forms. You do not need to be wealthy to attend Cathedral. The School adjusts tuition based on a family’s ability to pay, and there is a wide range of tuitions among Cathedral families from $500 - $34,900. Tuition is all-inclusive and covers daily lunch, book fees, athletics, band, outdoor education, and international travel in seventh and eighth grade. Financial assistance can include our Extended Day Program, uniforms, and additional educational support as needed.

We understand that independent school tuition has become increasingly expensive. We want to help make possible the education that you desire for your son.

We are here to support you. For more information, please visit cathedralschool.net or contact Tara Boland, Director of Admission at boland@cathedralschool.net or 415.614.5113.

As the conversation about masculinity continues to evolve, we at Cathedral School for Boys believe we must continue to define what it means to educate and raise boys. We devote each day to the spirited dialogue, dynamic lessons, and intentional character building that guide each young boy to engage in the way that best fits him, while he simultaneously develops empathy and respect for the world around him. Because Cathedral is here to... Raise the bar on raising boys.
