Chicago To Host Next Three Graph Expos NPES - The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies, has announced that GRAPH EXPO will be held at Mc- Cormick Place in Chicago, Illinois, for the next three years. The events will take place September 30-October 3 in 2018, October 13-16 in 2019, and Oc- tober 4-7 in 2020. Labelexpo Plans Linerless Trail Exhibitors participating in the Liner- less Trail have been announced as the feature area makes its return to Label- expo Europe 2017’s show floor. Estab- lished to help increase sustainability levels within the industry and acceler- ate zero waste adoption, the Linerless Trail will benefit printers looking to improve their green credentials. From materials through to process- ing, the Linerless Trail will have a particular focus on in-house produc- tion and new materials, as it aims to introduce and showcase the bene- fits linerless technology can offer print houses.

President of Diamond, has plans to expand the company, tak- ing it into new markets and opening up new revenue streams. In order to accommodate the growth, the company needed to focus on two areas. First, the move to a new larger facility, currently underway. Second, the installation of a new state-of- the-art 10-color printing press that could meet the growing — and changing — demands of the converter. In order to meet that challenge, Diamond turned to press manufacturer Uteco. Charlie Guida, Diamond Flexible Packaging, ( right ), welcomes the addition of a new Uteco Onyx press to help the company expand into new markets. Guida credits the personnel of Diamond with helping guide the company’s continued growth. Guida points in particular to Chad Stonecipher, VP Operations ( left ), who has lead the Diamond team in its expansion efforts. “A great deal of what we’ve accomplished is a testament to Chad and the way in which Diamond’s employees take such pride and care in their work.”

Uteco, Diamond ( Cont’d from Page 1)

Diamond purchased an Onyx press from Uteco, a 10-color flexo press that delivers speeds of nearly 1,400 feet per minute. The press is equipped with Di- rect Drive Evo technology, a patented process said to ensure optimum dot quality by flanging the CI drum and the plate sleeve mandrels directly into their drive motors. PCT (Press Control During Transition) is a Uteco platform for low waste and fast setting of printing pressures (Touch & Go + Kiss & Go) and registers (Click & Drag). This supports Diamond’s efforts at in- creasing sustainability through production efficien- cies and much lower material waste. PTC (Predictable Torque Control) is a software sys- tem said to allow predictive control of plate mandrel servomotor’s torque in varying print conditions to ensure best available print register accuracy. “The Uteco press will allow us to take the company in a different direction,” said Guida. “We can move more heavily into high-end printing.” The company spent about six months deliberat- ing on the press, settling on Uteco because it, ac- cording to Guida, represented the best value and

Absolute Upgrades Multiple Bobst Flexo Presses Absolute has recently converted two Bobst Biele- feld flexo presses to 2G Carbon Fibre chambers for client East Riding Sacks (ERS), a UK manufacturer of paper sacks. ERS’ relationship with Absolute has developed since 2015 when they needed to replace the chambers on its 6-color F+K 16S. “After a testing period [with Absolute], we reviewed the performance and found that it gave us significant improvements in press cleanliness, speed of blade change and ergonomics and, on this basis, decided to replace the remaining seven units,” said Jürgen Bopzin, East Ridings Technical Engineering Director. After several months, ERS decided it would also up- grade their 8-color Bobst F+K 20SIX press, an installa- tion now completed. Flint Group Selects Flexo Wash For Innovation Center The recently opened Global Innovation Center in Malmo, Sweden, an initiative by Flint Group, has been set up as an academic environment in which every day commercial practices can be trialed and ana- lyzed. The Center in Malmo, in southern Sweden, is home to a water-based research and development lab, which is run by Flint Group’s R&D Director, Rune Sjolin. Flint Group’s printing center, with a fully equipped Soma CI printing press, is managed by Printshop and OEM Manager, Lars Keldebäk. To ensure peak performance from the press, Kelde- bäk sought recommendations for his ancillary equip- ment, and Flexo Wash was chosen for its anilox cleaning technology. The FlexoWash machine installed is a 991XL Anilox Cleaner, which the manufacturer’s Managing Director Lars Kongstad was pleased to supply on an OEM basis to Flint Group. “We think the establishment of the new GIC in Malmo is an inspired move by Flint Group, and are delighted to be involved with their pioneering work,” said Flexo Wash International Sales Manager, Mette Laursen. FLXON Reports Doctor Blade Performance Increase For ECG FLXON, Charlotte, North Carolina, has reported high-speed HD flexo Extended Color Gamut (ECG) pressrooms are now able to produce more than 30,000,000 feet of production on a single set of SWEDCUT’s new advanced MFLEX PLUS doctor blades. “A combination of new doctor blade technology, higher performing presses and pressrooms holding themselves to the disciplined execution of ECG best practices make it possible for a pressroom to reduce blade consumption by 90 percent compared to just a few years ago,” said company spokesman, Ryan Sharkey. Sharkey went on to say pressrooms operating at this level make sure team members receive ongoing training and reinforcement that allows them to opti- mize their process. MFLEX PLUS was developed specifically to be better able to precisely meter an anilox surface at very high speeds. Pressrooms using PLUS report being able to hold a clean tight dot for extended periods, prevent defects including back-doctoring; all while being less wearing to an anilox surface.

because the manufacturer offered superior techni- cal and service support. “Ultimately, it was the customer support that com- pletely won us over,”Guida said. The SCIENCE of flexo rollers and sleeves Skilled flexo printers know any variation in temperature, humidity, substrates and a host of other conditions will affect the quality of their work. Cleanliness of lines, accuracy of colors and softness of shades can make or break a job. But if you want to maximize profits, you need to optimize uptime, speed and quality. The anilox rollers and sleeves in your presses are only as good as the science behind them— the technology of precision . ARC rollers and sleeves are built to exacting OEM dimensions, with cell geometries engineered for efficient ink usage and precise volumes. customers. Guida returned to the company in Janu- ary of this year, with an eye toward expansion. “Working for Diamond, and then being one of their customers has allowed me an amazing vantage point,” he said.“I’ve been on both sides of the fence. I know what works and what can be improved.” Diamond is built on a foundation of customization, striving to address the needs of each individual cus- tomer.“One of the things that separates us is our cre- ativity,” said Guida. “We like a challenge and we are happy to look at every project from a different angle. We know that no two customers have exactly the same needs.” Current President Howard Diamond, who’s pending semi-retirement has paved the way for Guida’s return to the company, began working at the company in 1977. His great uncle started the company in 1929, buying odd lots and working with renowned cus- tomers like DuPont. In the 1940s, the company en- tered the cellophane bag business. Diamond purchased its first CI press in 1998 and four years Charlie Guida oversees construction on Diamond’s new offices and production facilities.

later bought a laminator that now allowed the com- pany to print, laminate, slit and convert. “Doing everything under one roof allows us to bring efficiencies to our customers,” said Guida.“And the new press allows us to realize one of our primary goals for Diamond, which is that we are a great con- verter that has the capacity of a large converter but the service of a smaller business.” As for the future, Guida sees his company’s relation- ship with Uteco expending and taking Diamond into increasingly versatile and profitable areas.“I’d like to go deep with Uteco,” Guida said.“As Uteco’s technol- ogy helps us expand and grow, we’ll turn to them for future equipment additions and upgrades.” Guida is quick to point out, however, that technolo- gy alone cannot be expected to guide a company to success. For Diamond, it’s all about the people. “We have a great core of people with a tremendous amount of experience,” said Guida.“I truly value them and their ingenuity. Our press operators are artisans. They were trained on 20-year-old machines. No mat- ter how much automation you have, operators must know what happens when they press the button.” There’s also no substitute for passion. “Diamond’s employees are driven to provide the best for our cus- tomers,” Guida said. “We have unparalleled quality control; since everyone is focused on doing every- thing right the first time we have next to no returns. When we discussed installing a new press, everyone added their input and their excitement to the pro- ject. When it comes to growing the company our phi- losophy is simple:We are all in.” Uteco Installs Presses At Four Midwest Converters Uteco continues to see great activity in the U.S. midwest with four recent installations. The company installed an Onyx 108 at Diamond Flexible Packaging in Northbrook, Illinois.
