Jamestown Celebrates 70 Years Of Packaging Innovation BY GREG KISHBAUGH The history of Jamestown Container Companies runs on a parallel track with that of the corrugated industry as a whole. For every major development in the marketplace, every new technology and major de- velopment, Jamestown has been at the center of it all. Jamestown, an independent corrugated company based in James- town, New York, is celebrating its 70th year in business, along with its rich history of technology and acquisitions.

Corrugated Week 2026 Heads To The Lone Star State The countdown is nearly over. Corrugated Week 2026 kicks off Monday, September 28 at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas. With the show right around the corner, here are a few highlights, reminders and details to keep in mind. A good place to start is the Corrugated Week Event App. Attendees can use it to build a personalized schedule and explore sessions, speakers and exhibitors before ar- riving, then use it throughout the week to nav- igate the conference, connect with fellow at- tendees and receive real-time updates. Once in Fort Worth, badges can be picked up at the event registration desk in the 13th Street Lob- by of the Fort Worth Convention Center. From there, it’s a busy few days. Two key- note presentations will anchor the general session programming, beginning Tuesday with Laurent Sellier, President and CEO of Smurfit Westrock North America. Sellier will share his perspective on the trends, challeng- es and opportunities reshaping the global corrugated industry. Will Cain, political ana- lyst, columnist, sports commentator and host of “The Will Cain Show” on FOX News, will

Of course, not everything happening during Corrugat- ed Week will take place inside the convention center. The tournament, scheduled from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., is cur- rently sold out, although attendees can still join the waitlist through registration. For the rest of the conference, official attire is business casual. A sweater or jacket may also come in handy in cooler session rooms. Outside is another story. The fore- cast is currently predicting highs of 89 to 102 degrees, and lows between 69 and 79 degrees. The Omni Fort Worth Hotel is sold out, but TAPPI has provided several nearby lodging alternatives. Sunday night activities will still be hosted at the Omni.

L&M Corrugated Container Expands Into New Facility

• Better logistics for both local deliveries and customer pick-ups • Room for future equipment and production expansion • Space to grow our team as we continue serving more businesses across Fox Valley

Platteville, Wisconsin based L&M Corrugated Container Corporation has announced that its Fox Valley location has relocated to Appleton, Wisconsin as its Distribution and Fulfillment Center. This move represents growth, innova- tion and a deeper commitment to serving the Fox Valley community. Even with the move, one thing remains unchanged: L&M’s dedication to serving businesses with the same re- liability, quality, and care it built its name on. The new Ap- pleton Distribution and Fulfillment Center strengthens that connection by placing L&M in a central, accessible location that supports better service for longstanding business part- ners and future customers. As demand for high-quality corrugated products contin- ues to grow, so does the need for more space, improved logistics, and expanded capabilities. The new Appleton fa- cility provides the physical and operational flexibility nec- essary for the future. This move offers several immediate and long-term ben- efits: • More warehouse space for efficient inventory storage and organization • Faster turnaround times thanks to improved workflow and accessibility

This space represents the first step toward larger, in- novative goals that will shape the future of L&M. L&M Corrugated Container Corp. was established in 1979 in Zion, Illinois. Today, it operates two advanced manufacturing plants in Wisconsin, located in Platteville and Pleasant Prairie, which serve businesses across the Midwest, including major hubs such as Milwaukee, Madi- son, Chicago, and Dubuque. Each year, L&M converts an average of 500 million square feet of corrugated packaging. Behind this large number are our more than 130 skilled employees, focused on providing exceptional packaging solutions. Visit: lmcontainer .com.

Turn Trim Waste into Revenue One Size Never Fits All G.F. Puhl Designs Scrap Systems to Meet YOUR Needs

Our customers have various needs for scrap and dust collection systems based on several factors including building layout, available space for the equipment, distance conveyed, local codes for noise and height as well as air permitting and available operating and maintenance staff. Change the game with a custom-designed system by G.F. Puhl. It can make all the difference. When it comes to trim collection systems, there’s virtually no problem we haven’t solved.

Problem: No room for a scrap system inside the building. Solution: If your building footprint won’t support additional trim waste equipment, go outdoors. Exterior systems like an above-roof or ground-level concentrator will boost your capacity. Problem: No way to monitor the system unless you’re on site. Solution: G.F. Puhl leads the pack with proprietary technology that makes it possible to monitor the system from wherever you are. Request PLC touch screen controls with real-time pressure balancing and real-time remote via your smart phone or computer. G.F. Puhl’s expert engineering team has more than 50 years of combined experience designing, fabricating installing, and commissioning trim and dust collection systems of every kind, including outdoor systems with dual compactors, above roof systems with single or multiple cyclones and balers and below roof screen separator systems. If you’re looking for a vendor that can help you solve the scrap collection puzzle once and for all, contact G.F. Puhl today. 615.230.9500 or sales@gfpuhl.com

Problem: No space for a baler room. No budget for baler room staff. Solution: Try outdoor auger compactors requiring minimal operator interaction. Auger compactors achieve higher compaction than conventional ram compactors with less maintenance and no hydraulic fluid. Dual compactor systems allow continuous running while the waste hauler is changing out the container. Problem: No budget for a new system. Solution: Request a custom system with remanufactured equipment. G.F. Puhl sells remanufactured balers, blowers, separators, filters, and more. The savings can be significant and the warranty adds peace of mind. Problem: Your existing system doesn’t meet codes and the inspector has notified you of a problem with the existing system. Solution: G.F. Puhl’s NFPA trained engineering team designs NFPA and OSHA compliant systems that are as safe as they are durable. Problem: Dust is out of control. Solution: G.F. Puhl systems are designed to minimize the hazards created by ambient dust. Dust briquetters, certified explosion isolation valves, flame front diverters, and other safety features maximize safety.

Following the transaction, Joe led major commercial integration initiatives and helped oversee the successful rebranding of the business during a pivotal period of or- ganizational change. Those experiences helped shape his belief that sustainable growth happens when the right people, systems and execution strategies are aligned to drive performance and create long-term value. AICC Turns Member Survey Feedback Into Action

In January 2026, AICC conducted a member survey to gain insight into the challenges currently facing indepen- dent box makers in North America. The feedback has been reviewed, and the Board iden- tified that the biggest challenges continue to be economic uncertainty, pricing and margin pressures, rising operating costs, workforce development, succession planning, and the adoption of AI and digital technologies. The respons- es also reflected the value of training and education com- bined with networking and peer-to-peer learning. Since receiving the survey results, the Convention Content Committee and Board of Directors have aligned our programming to reflect these priorities. • Education & Courses: 64 updated courses to improve usability and professionalism. Recently updated to in- clude Corrugated Fundamentals and Corrugated Safe- ty Basics (English & Spanish). Improved our LMS plat- form usability • Webinars: 20 new webinars covering Continuous Im- provement, AI, and member benefits. • In-Person Events: Six upcoming in-person events, including two National Meetings, an Emerging Lead- er Networking event, Regional Summits, and the Ski Meeting.

• Peer Learning & Connection: Expanded opportuni- ties through the Next Generation Group, Management Group, Emerging Leaders Program, CEO Groups, new Advisory Groups, Kids in Corrugated, Women in Pack- aging, and a new AI-specific committee. • Meeting Content: National and Regional Meetings fo- cused on AI, succession planning, and leadership de- velopment, with plant tours and networking opportu- nities. Member feedback continues to guide program plan- ning as AICC develops new initiatives for 2026–2027. We look forward to continuing to learn, connect, and grow to- gether. Visit: aiccbox.org .

AF&PA Advocates For Commercial Recycling To Be Excluded From EPR The American Forest & Paper Association is urging for commercial paper and packaging recycling to be exclud- ed from extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs, saying that these materials already move through estab- lished, privately funded recycling systems. In blog post on its website, AF&PA said that “includ- ing commercial packaging recycling in extended producer responsibility programs would require businesses to pay into a system they do not use and do not need. It effec- tively charges them twice for recycling that is already hap- pening.” When lawmakers consider EPR programs, it is critical to understand how paper and paper-based packaging are already recycled today, and where the real gaps in the sys- tem exist, AF&PA argues. AF&PA underscores that most paper-based packag- ing from businesses is already recycled at very high rates through existing systems. “Including it in EPR would re- quire businesses to pay into a program they do not use, effectively subsidizing residential recycling without receiv- ing those services.” They go on to say that most paper-based packaging from businesses is already recycled at very high rates through existing systems. Therefore, “Including it in EPR

ultimately raises cost without improving paper recycling outcomes. As a result, Americans will ultimately feel the impact when shopping at the grocery store and for every- day necessities.”

As lawmakers continue to evaluate EPR proposals, three important factors should be considered: • Keeping the focus on residential challenges: EPR pro- grams are intended to address gaps in household re- cycling, particularly for hard-to-recycle materials, like plastic. • Avoid shifting costs onto businesses unnecessarily: Commercial recycling systems are already funded and functioning. Including them risks duplicating costs with- out improving paper recycling outcomes. • Ground decisions in a full understanding of the system: Conduct and complete a comprehensive recycling Needs Assessment to better understand the current recycling system’s performance and avoid unintended consequences. Advance Paper Box Installs Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106

“The Rapida 106 modernizes and expands our press- room and allows for additional capacity,” says Yeti Biroue, APB’s Chief Financial Officer. “It will become our flagship press and will produce the majority of our folding carton work.”

Advance Paper Box Ltd. (APB), an independent folding car- ton manufacturer in Winnipeg, Manitoba, has purchased a new Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 41-inch seven-color press with coater — the largest single capital investment in the company’s more than 50-year history. The investment modernizes APB’s pressroom and expands the range of work the company can take on for brand owners across North America. “Over the years, our commitment to providing innova- tive and high-quality packaging solutions has driven our growth, and now, we’re taking it to the next level with a sig- nificant capacity expansion and other forward-thinking ini- tiatives,” says Gerry Choquette, President & CEO, Advance Paper Box Ltd. “We’ve been making cartons here for over 50 years. This investment in a new Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 says we intend to be doing it for the next 50.” The new Rapida press, which will be delivered in early 2027, is designed with APB’s current and future custom- ers’ needs in mind. They consistently requested more colors, faster turnaround times, and job analytics for all of their work. This is what is required by brand owners with today’s multi-SKU initiatives. Customers requested ex- tended color gamut so APB could match a far wider range of brand colors without dedicated spot inks.

APB chose Koenig & Bauer due to a number of signifi- cant factors. First, relates Biroue, Koenig & Bauer has been building printing presses since 1817. “When you’re making the largest capital commitment in your company’s history, continuity matters,” he says. “We wanted a trusted advi- sor who will support our newest investment as well as our whole organization well into the future.” Visit: koenig-bauer-celmacch.com . Acquisitions As A Business Philosophy Four years after its Medina purchase, Jamestown formed Great Lakes Container from the purchase of a PCA plant in Lockport, New York. “The PCA acquisition in Lockport was our first step up the supply chain, as it included the first corrugator for

ing the company’s journey and future vision. “The company was started in 1956 by Glenn Janowsky, and it was built on relationships, design, customer service, and quick service,” said Joseph R. Palmeri, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Jamestown Container, who joined the company a few months after its founding. Together with Bruce Janowsky, Glenn’s son, the CEO and President of the company, they’ve assembled a team that has driven Jamestown from a single plant into a multi-loca- tion manufacturing and packaging organization serving businesses across a wide range of industries. “We’ve always had an incredible emphasis on the supply chain and how it could be managed to assist our customers,” said Palmeri. “We began with sheet supply contracts with PCA and many others, and we remained fo- cused on the quality of our product, speed of our service and fairness of our prices. After years of steady growth, we did our first acquisition in 1980 with the purchase of On- tario Containers, a small sheet plant in Medina, New York. From there, acquisitions became a key component of Jamestown’s business philosophy and the fuel that pro- pelled its growth. Bruce Janowsky

Jamestown” said Janowsky, “and it was a significant one for us.” In March 1994, Jamestown purchased the old Gaylord Container Plant in Rochester, New York, forming James- town Container Rochester Inc. The company also moved the Medina, New York, sheet plant business to Rochester, while retaining the contract packaging work in Medina where it would stay until later moved to Buffalo in 2002. Just a few short months later, in August of 1994, James- Glenn Janowsky, left started Jamestown Container in 1956. Joseph R. In July 2008, Jamestown Container, Norampac and Smurfit-Stone partnered together to form Niagara Sheets, a sheet feeder located in North Tonawanda, New York; Jamestown continues to serve as the majority owner and managing partner. The Lockport corrugator business was then moved to the newly formed Niagara Sheets. “Niagara Sheets was a real test of our resolve,” said Janowsky. “Our startup date was right as the financial cri- sis was happening. The market collapsed by 20 percent. One of our partners, Stone Container, went bankrupt. Our largest customer went bankrupt.” The following year, the remaining business from the Lockport facility was moved to the Rochester plant and the Lockport plant was shuttered. Also in 2009, Jamestown purchased the book of busi- ness of Timbar Packaging based in Oneida, New York, and rolled the business into the Rochester location. In 2011, Jamestown became a partner in Greenpac Mill LLC, a 100 percent recycled mill and spent two years mak- ing it operational. In early 2012, Jamestown purchased the book of busi-

Syracuse Corrugated and rolled the business into the Rochester location. “This acquisition represents an exciting step forward for our company,” said Palmeri. “Syracuse Corrugated Box Corp. has a strong reputation for quality, reliability, and customer relationships over many years. We are proud to welcome their customers into the Jamestown Container family.” Palmeri is quick to point out that the goal at Jamestown has never been the mergers in and of themselves; every one of the acquisitions has been driven by its customers. “In many instances, we had customers who voiced their opinion that we should be geographically closer to them in order to better meet their needs,” Palmeri said. “That would be the driving force of purchasing a company closer to them. It was a part of our growth strategy.” The Power of Partnerships One of Jamestown’s operational philosophies, and ad- ditional growth strategy, has been to leverage risk through joint ventures. “Finding suitable partners and nurturing those relation- ships has allowed us to reach much greater heights than we could have done alone,” Palmeri said. “Joint ventures help eliminate — or at least lower — risk, and the upsides of success are greater, as well. We have some great part- ners and this pathway has always worked for us.”

for maybe 40 percent of its volume. So how do you get the advantage of efficiency and cost advantage in an op- eration that you don’t have enough size to scale yourself? The most efficient way is through a partnership.” Improving The Process While Jamestown has always had its eye on controlling the supply chain as a cornerstone of its business, it also fo- cused strongly on process improvement to bring its plans to fruition. “In the late 1980s,” said Janowsky, “Japan was the 500-pound gorilla on the world market, and credit for Ja- pan’s economic rise was given to process improvement. We put that process into place over many years at James- town, and it helped us significantly in a lot of areas.” In addition to measuring processes and evaluating the In 1956, Jamestown employed six workers. straint and restructure the rest of the organization around it. It adopts the common idiom “a chain is no stronger than its weakest link.” That means that organizations and pro- cesses are vulnerable because the weakest person or part can always damage or break them, or at least adversely affect the outcome. “The theory of constraints is based on a pull system, whereas the corrugated industry is mostly built on a push system. With the pull system your customers dictate the pace that the plant operates, not your cost accounting or your efficiency measures. It’s a very different concept.” Both Janowsky and Palmeri credit the values the com- pany was founded on for laying the fundamental attitude and work ethic that has propelled the company forward. Jamestown’s long history of acquisitions and mergers has en- abled the company to remain successful and continue to grow in a competitive marketplace.

asked that he move again, he decided to stay in James- town and start his own sheet plant. From day one, he was going up against the giants in the industry and it was a tough road. But he focused on the customers and on ways to gain scale through partnerships. “We describe ourselves as we make corrugated boxes, but we’re actually in the design business, the printing busi- ness, the packaging business,” added Janowsky. Lasting Legacy It has perhaps become a bit passé to say that a compa- ny’s employees are like family, but in the case of James- town, it is a foundational truth. “A topic that comes up many times during our manage- ment meetings is this: We have the greatest employees and we’re continually grateful for their work ethic and strong, positive attitudes,” said Palmeri. “We’ve got very smart employees. Part of that is the respect we feel for them and that we ask for and value their input.” “Joe and Bruce would never say it, but I will,” said Hud- son. “One of the reasons why we have great employees and smart people working for Jamestown Container is be- cause of the two families that own the company. I know a lot of folks will say this about their employers, but it is 100 percent true and never ever in doubt. You cannot find two finer people and two finer families to work with and work for. And they will never take the credit for it. But that is ab- solutely the truth. And that is why people come here, and that is why people stay here.” Companies live and die by their reputation and James- town has worked tirelessly to make certain it is well-re- garded and respected in the industry, among not only its customers but its peers. “When we do a new-hire orientation for our salespeo- ple or for our customer service people or for our designers — specifically for departments that are going to be inter- acting with customers or prospects — we’ve got a training program and an orientation program that we go through,” said Hudson. “And one of the things we cover on their first day in a general overview of their role and their respon- sibilities is the reputation of the company and how they will be expected to represent that and to make sure they uphold that above almost anything else.
