W hile a new year may bring more than a handful of un- knowns, consumers are already planning how they’ll shop in 2020.And one thing is for certain: physical interactions with products still play a major role in purchasing decisions. The over- whelming majority (82 percent) of consumers say that seeing, holding or demoing a product in-person makes them more in- clined to actually purchase at the counter.

AICC Hosts Seminar To Build Customer Relationships AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, has opened registration on its latest sales seminar, Build- ing Long Term Customer Relationships, to be offered March 3-4, in College Park, Georgia. Taught by Keith Thomas, Director of Business De- velopment, Michigan City Paper Box Co., this seminar will help attendees learn specific and tangible ways to build trust, dependability and integrity throughout the entire sales process. They will also uncover hidden areas where these three character traits are most of- ten compromised and techniques to accelerate trust to help shorten sales cycles. The competitiveness of today’s print and packaging landscape often has us focusing on the short-term ben- efit – i.e., the close of a deal. While this is what all sales professionals want, there are different ways to go about getting there. With a longer-term perspective in mind, attendees will learn to close current deals while simul- taneously building a relationship with a client or pros- pect that will position them to order repeatedly after the successful execution of the first order. More infor- mation about the seminar and hotel reservation infor- mation can be found at www.aiccbox.org/calendar .

Corrugated Tackles E-Commerce’s Challenges E-commerce shipments increased globally by 33 per- cent between 2014 and 2016, according to a survey from Smithers’ Pira. Packaging, according to the report, played a pivotal role in the explosive growth of e-com- merce in recent years. The success and growth of e-commerce depends on the smooth running of a complex supply chain. Corru- gated packaging is one element that contributes to the successful performance of this interconnected supply chain. To deliver products safely and efficiently and sat- isfy customer expectations requires packaging that is functional and protective, which corrugated delivers. Whether the customer is buying online,or in a retail en- vironment, the experience should be the same, in terms of the look and feel and quality of the product. Packag- ing remains a key point of communication with the con- sumer as the doorstep has replaced the brick and mortar store in being the first physical touchpoint between cus- tomer and the product and brand. Well-designed boxes help increase customer satisfaction and creates a lasting emotional bond with the brand. The popular trend of “unboxing” videos that appear frequently online are a demonstration of this phenomenon. The packaging for products shipped via e-commerce must be strong and protective, because of the high numbers of touchpoints during a product’s journey. Logistics are a challenge, especially “the last mile” and delivery to the customer. Corrugated packaging typically includes: excellent cushioning properties; lightweight, slim and strong structures to ensure the safe transit of the product; tai- lor-made solutions for optimal space utilization; and fea- tures such as adjustable sizes due to pre-cuts, automat- ically locking bottoms for easy assembly, tamper-proof locks and resealable packaging for return shipments. As sustainability issues continue to be a huge con- cern for consumers, corrugated packaging offers an eco-friendly packaging solution. It is a 100 percent re- cyclable and biodegradable material; the fibres are re- cycled to make new corrugated packaging, as, on aver- age, a new box contains 88 percent recycled content, and paper fibres can be recycled 25 times or more.
