Abbott-Action Invests In The Future With A ‘Clear Vision’ BY LEN PRAZYCH This week’s report detailing the success stories of North American in- dependent box makers brings us to Attleboro, Massachusetts, a quaint New England burg 45 minutes south of bustling Boston. Once known as the “The Jewelry Capital of the World” for the many jewelry manu- facturers that set up shop in the early 1920’s, the community is home, coincidentally, to the local jewel of the corrugated industry: Abbott-Ac- tion Packaging, a third-generation family business, owned and operat- ed by Sam Abbott, Glen Gardiner, and Gail Conca.

The company was founded as Abbott Box Co. in 1935 by Abbott’s grandfather, Warren, and great uncle, Robert. It was passed down to the second generation, John and Paul Abbott, who successfully oper- ated the company for many years. Around the same time, Action Con- tainer was transitioning from George Gardiner to second-generation leadership that included Glen and Gail. They had the vision to secure a guaranteed source of sheets by investing in NewCorr Packaging, a sheet feeder consortium. In 2001, the merger of Abbott Box and Action Container resulted in Abbott-Action Packaging. AICC Now Accepting Entries For 2026 Innovator Of The Year AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, is now accepting entries for the 2026 AICC & Board Converting News Innovator of the Year Competition in the Non-Ma- chinery Category. The Innovator of the Year Competition was developed more than two decades ago as a forum for box makers and suppliers to showcase their most impactful innova- tions. Each year, the AICC Plant Innovations Committee reviews submitted entries and selects finalists, which are then presented to attendees of AICC/TAPPI 2026 Corru- gated Week for voting. AICC Celebrates 25-Year Career Of Taryn Pyle
AICC has announced the retirement of Taryn Pyle, Director of Training, Education, and Professional Development, ef- fective June 30, following 25 years of dedicated service to the Association and the independent packaging industry. Throughout her tenure, Taryn played a transforma- tive role in advancing AICC’s mission through education, leadership development, member engagement, and pro- fessional growth initiatives. Her commitment to creat- ing meaningful learning opportunities helped shape the careers of countless individuals across the independent packaging community while strengthening the Associa- tion’s educational offerings and industry impact. Over the course of her career, Taryn contributed to
nearly every corner of the Association. She helped revital- ize AICC’s publications, expanded member engagement efforts, championed leadership development programs, and was instrumental in the growth of Packaging Univer- sity, which now provides AICC members with extensive access to free online education and training resources.
Her work reflected a steadfast belief that investing in people is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen independent businesses and the industry overall. In a recent message to members re- flecting on her career, she expressed deep gratitude for the relationships and shared experiences that defined her time with AICC. She credited the Association’s mem- bers for helping shape her understanding of the industry and for creating a culture built on generosity, mentorship, and a will- ingness to share knowledge. “Taryn’s influence in all AICC offerings, most recently Education programming, is one reason that there are so many bene- fits to membership today.” said AICC Pres- ident Mike D’Angelo. “Her joy in the way she interacts with people will be a fond memory for so many. We’ll miss Taryn as she tackles her next adventures.” Taryn’s influence can be seen in the generations of industry professionals who benefited from her guidance, educational programming, and unwavering support. Ron Spice Of Alliance Machine Systems Passes Away At 75 Ronald Scott Spice, 75, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away on May 27, 2026 surrounded by loving family. Ron was born on November 28,

Ron dedicated 25 years to our organization as Latin America Sales Manager, and was instrumental in the development of long-lasting relationships with our customers in the region. More im- portantly, Ron was a loving husband, father, and grandfa- ther. His integrity, warmth, and commitment left a mean- ingful and enduring impact on everyone he met. Alliance would not be where we are today if not for Ron. We ex- tend our heartfelt condolences to Ron’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with him. He will be greatly missed.” When he wasn't traveling for business, he anchored his life in Cincinnati. He was a baritone in the Cathedral Choir at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church for 42 years. He was an avid fan of the Bengals and Reds. He was a voracious reader of history, especially about WWII. That passion eventually led him to visit both Normandy and Bastogne. Ron is survived by his wife Barbara, their three sons, Scott (Christine), Drew, and Todd (Kirsten); his three be- loved grandchildren Greta, Annie, and Luke, and three sib- lings Byron Jr., Elizabeth, and Susan.

They spent the first year of their marriage in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where Ron completed research for a second MA in Latin American Business. Upon returning to the states, they settled in Chicago and Ron began a sales job with a paper company. It wasn't until he started selling machin- ery for the corrugated box industry that he discovered his calling. The last 25 years of his work life were with Alliance Ma- chine Systems International located in Spokane, Washing-

The Machine Family Ed Coogan, Abbott-Action’s Director of Operations, is a 20+ year industry veteran who in his previous life was a customer who used to buy boxes from his current employ- er. “I was a big ‘continuous improvement and lean manu- facturing guy’ in my previous job, which is really how I got started here and why Abbott-Action and I have been such a great fit,” he says, adding that the company’s real long- term success has been built on the decisions to invest in the ten key pieces of converting equipment on its produc-

Having Valco Melton systems on multiple machines has also made training faster and easier. “Valco Melton techs come to the plant, do the ‘install,’ train our people, and we’re up and running. Over the last three or four years, the same three or four techs have put in camera and glue systems and we've built relationships with them. We now have enough Valco Melton equipment in our plant to mini- mize that amount of training we need, so installs are faster and more efficient,” says Coogan, who is quick to share an example of Valco Melton’s responsiveness to a service issue. “We were trying to figure out why the glue system kept telling us there was no glue in the system when we were

Keeping Up To Speed If there is a challenge to be overcome for Abbott-Action, it’s keeping up with the remarkable production speeds of the Haire Apstar 1628 and the two Isowa machines, which are essentially “over producing” for the plant’s convey- or system. “We’re just producing more than our material handling systems can handle and we’re working through that process now, which will likely involve more automated conveyors,” says Coogan, who is also a strong believer in bringing OEMs into the facility regularly to help with pre- ventive maintenance issues. Speaking of OEMs and partnerships, Coogan reported that Abbott-Action has been a beneficiary of a partnership developed between Valco Melton and Weyers Cave, Vir- ginia based A.G.
