Welcome message

April 2023.

April 2023

Dragi putnici,

Dear passengers,

Naši letovi vode vas direktno do tog in- teresantnog grada u Turskoj u kom se prepliću Istok i Zapad, Evropa, Afrika i Azija. Uživajte u letu i srećan put, Jirži Marek Generalni direktor Er Srbije

It was almost half a century ago that one of the most famous musicians in the Balkans released a song entitled April in Belgrade, a song that’s sung spon- taneously on occasion throughout the month by all of us who reside in the capital. Belgrade is at its most beautiful in spring, when it is filled with “sunny and smiling days”. If you are reading this aboard one of Air Serbia’s flights to Belgrade, believe me, you have chosen the best part of the year to get acquainted with the city on the confluence of the Sava and Danube. Belgrade is our company’s main hub. It is where Nikola Tesla Airport is located, from which we fly to more than 80 destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa and North Ameri- ca. This April, for the first time, we will be operating flights from Belgrade to Ankara, Lisbon, İzmir and Catania, while we have also reinstated flights to Tel Aviv. Our passengers are particularly pleased with the addi- tion of direct flights to Lisbon. We have opened the door to passengers wishing to explore this historic city, where old customs and ancient history intertwine with modern culture and entertainment and fado music that is recited against a guitar backdrop. Lisbon is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, and one that you can now reach directly in just four hours thanks to the scheduled Air Serbia flight. Easter is this year being celebrated in April, according to both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The greatest Christian holiday carries special symbolism due to the joy it brings. We believe that our flights to Tel Aviv will be use- ful for those wishing to spend their Easter in Israel. Explore this land of charming diversity, where the ancient and the modern intertwine constantly. On the east coast of Sicily and at the foot of Mount Et- na lies the beautiful Catania. Adventurers from all over the world view it as a starting point for exploring the tallest vol- cano in Europe. Even though Etna is one of Sicily’s greatest landmarks, during your stay in Catania you should be sure not to miss the opportunity to check out the city’s fantastic architecture, numerous cultural and historical monuments and beautiful beaches, but also to experience the cuisine. We recommend Arancino and Alla Norma pasta, but you should also remain open to trying other Sicilian delicacies. If you haven’t previously visited İzmir, you now have an opportunity to do so. Our flights take you directly to this in- teresting Turkish city that marks a meeting point between East and West; between Europe, Africa and Asia. İzmir has a wealth of natural beauty, and nearby you can find the mag- nificent Ephesus, Çeşme, Kuşadası, Şirince, Urlu and Selçuk. Regardless of which side of the world you are head- ing to this April, we hope that you will return home feel- ing more fulfilled. Enjoy your flight and have a pleasant trip, jiri marek, CEO Air Serbia

Na letu On board

Zašto volite avione? Why do you like planes? Avion mi dođe kao drugi dom Planes are like my second home

I live in my home- town of Split, so my fastest connection to the mainland is by plane . I’m at the airport at least three times a month, sometimes even more. I like to travel, and especially to fly, because you arrive quickly and save a lot of time, but also be- cause I like to be in the air. There is some special mag- ic and charm in the sky and the sun, and the whole world looks totally different when viewed from the heights. What don’t you board a plane without? I don't like to carry a su- itcase into the passenger ca- bin. That’s why I usually don’t have many things except my small bag. I always have wi- th me headphones, so I can use my time on the flight to listen to music, but also to think about my new songs. If the flight is longer, I glad- ly watch a good film, and al- so sleep well.

One more new destination

On 13 th March 2023, with flight JU150 , Air Serbia introduced the new scheduled service between Belgrade and Budapest. “With the flight to Budapest, we launched the first of more than 20 destinations we’ll be operating flights to du- ring the summer season that weren’t part of our network in 2022. We will monitor demand and, in accordance with that, gradually increase the frequency of flights between the two cities. We believe that the introduction of direct fli- ghts will contribute to better connectivity between Serbia and Hungary and make travelling all over Europe much fa- ster for our passengers,” said Boško Rupić, Air Serbia Ge- neral Manager, Commercial and Strategy. A welcome greeting was organised for Air Serbia’s first flight to the city at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Air- port, which is located 16km southeast of the Hungarian ca- pital. Budapest is a city with a long, rich and eventful history, testifying to which are its numerous important buildings from various epochs and in various styles: gothic, byzanti- ne, renaissance, baroque, classical, neoclassical. The Bu- dapest Metro is the second oldest underground urban rail system in the world, and the famous Széchenyi Cha- in Bridge represents the reference point of the city, wi- th distance from it is used to measure all distances in Hun- gary. The capital of Hungary, which is also known for its thermal baths and hot springs, is one of the favourite wee- kend destinations for people from neighbouring countries. By introducing a scheduled service between the two capitals, Air Serbia also provides its passengers with go- od connections from Budapest, via Belgrade, to Spain, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, the U.S. and other countries arou- nd the region. Victorious city on the banks of the Nile

The Egyptian capital of Cairo is one of the world’s oldest cities. You simply must visit this trea- sure trove of history and culture, this other worldly place, at least once in your life. Smell the spi- ces, experience Africa, feel the sand in this city that’s called Al Qahirah in Arabic, meaning the Victorious City. Must-see places during your vi- sit to Cairo definitely include a tour of the Grand Egyptian Mu- seum, one of the largest muse- ums in the world, but also Al-Az- har Mosque, the Coptic Quarter, Tahrir Square, modern Cairo’s ci- ty centre and the nearby Parlia- ment of Egypt, the Roda Island on the Nile etc. Of course, you al- so shouldn’t miss out on an eve- ning cruise down the Nile, wi- th an oriental programme and dinner on board. The river traverses Cairo, whi- ch – apart from the banks of the great river – also occupies the territory of three river islands.

Located to the west of the Ni- le is the new, modern Cairo, whi- ch was mainly built during the reign of Ismail the Magnificent and modelled on the example of Paris. It is characterised by its wide streets and boulevards, spacious parks and modern ar- chitecture. Sprawling over the area to the east of the river is the old city, Islamic/Medieval Cai- ro and Coptic Cairo, which bo- ast numerous sacral buildings representing various religions. The islands, which are occupied by residential neighbourhoods and luxurious settlements, are connected to the city by nume- rous bridges, which also conne- ct Cairo to the suburbs of Giza and Imbaba. The city is lively, hectic and inte- resting, but if you’re accustomed to everything being orderly and precisely arranged, you’ll be left wanting here. Still, it is precise- ly this aspect that many would describe as “chaos” that makes

Cairo irresistible and definitive - ly unique. Here you will see won- ders of the world, cruise the Ni- le, visit Christian churches or mosques, walk across some of the bridges where the city’s resi- dents often socialise... All in all, this city is something very spe- cial that probably differs from the cities to which most of us are accustomed. The Nile runs through the enti- re city, so you can familiarise yo- urself with Cairo by following the course of the river, especially if you’re staying at one of the ho- tels situated along the riverbank. The Coptic quarter is an old, extremely beautiful and tranqu- il neighbourhood, which is ho- me to the beautiful church of the Holy Virgin Mary that dates back to the 7 th century. The arc- hitecture is also interesting he- re, with the quarter’s streets pa- ved and narrow, while there are also many cafés offering respite in the form of tea and other re- freshments. such that one gets the impre- ssion that everyone is in so- me kind of a rush, that everyone is hurrying and hustling, whi- le the sheer number of cars is incredible. On the other hand, Egyptians also like to “chill”, whi- ch they do by sitting in parks, on benches, street sides, cafés and coffee houses, chatting, sociali- sing or simply observing the ci- ty and people occupied by their own thoughts. They are kind- ly and want to help, explain and offer guidance. However, in Ca- iro, where everything is diver- se and so excitingly chaotic, the best thing is perhaps to allow the city’s rhythm to carry you wherever it wants. The bazaar operates rou- nd the clock, so there’s no spe- cial time to visit. This is also a favourite place for people to so- cialise, stroll, stop by for a chat... And while you’re already in Cai- ro, don’t miss out on the famo-

us stew Ful Medames, one of the specialities of Egyptian cu- isine. You can order it at one of the local restaurants speciali- sing in Egyptian national cuisi- ne, but it is completely authen- tic to buy this dish on the street. Among the places acclaimed for their version of fūl, which is the shortened name for this famo- us dish, is an eatery located in one of the side streets near the Al-Sayeda Zainab Mosque at the historic heart of Cairo. This dish is essentially a stew made from cooked fava beans, served wi- th olive oil and cumin, and opti- onally chopped parsley, lemon juice, hot peppers and other ve- getables, herbs and spices. It is eaten by dipping very tasty Egyptian flatbread into the stew, meaning this speciality is traditi- onally eaten without cutlery, tho- ugh that is naturally your choi- ce. Egyptians also have a culture of drinking tea at any time of the day. Hibiscus is cultivated in Egypt and drunk both as a cold juice and as a hot tea, though black tea is also very popular. Cairo is a city that’s seemin- gly without beginning or end, so you’ll have to ascend to some high spot if you’re seeking a pa- noramic view. At the very centre of the city is the 187-metre-tall Cairo Tower, which houses a restaurant offering various Egyptian specialities, drinks and, of course, shisha pipes, which can be found almost everywhe- re. The stunning view from this tower is simply inimitable.

Don't miss Giza and Alexandria

Šetnjom kroz grad lako ćete uočiti i tvrđavu smeštenu uz obalu.

Cairo. GIZA

The number one spot is Gi- za, with its famous pyramids and the mystical Sphinx. Le- ading to the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile is the 11-kilometre-long pyramid ro- ad, Al-Haram Street. First esta- blished back in 1869, to coin- cide with the opening of the Suez Canal, it has since been widened and tarmacked. Belie- ved to have been conceived as tombs, the pyramids represent giant staircases that lead the ascent of the soul and spirit of departed kings towards the sun and the spirit world. The Giza pyramids were bu- ilt to last eternally. Constru- cted approximately 4,500 ye- ars ago, these monumental structures represent relics of the period of the Old Kingdom of Egypt. In the belief that the pharaohs would become gods after they died, their tombs we- re filled with things that every ruler would need to survive in the afterlife. Khufu, aka Cheops, is the pha- raoh believed to have first be - gun the project to constru- ct the Giza pyramid complex in around the year 2550 B.C. The Great Pyramid, the lar- gest in Giza, rises to a height of approximately 147 metres above the plateau. Each of its 2.3 million stone blocks has an estimated weight of between 2.5 and 15 tons. His son, Khafre, built the second Gi- za pyramid in around the year 2520 B.C. His necropolis inclu- ded the Sphinx, the mysterio-

The third Giza pyramid, whi- ch is significantly smaller than the first two, was built by Pha - raoh Menkaure circa 2490 B.C. Despite being smaller than the previous two, his tomb is actu- ally much more complex. ALEXANDRIA With trains running very frequently to and from Cai- ro, it is also possible to enjoy a one-day excursion to the be- autiful Alexandria, the ancient former Egyptian capital on the Mediterranean coast that used to be home to the Pharos Li- ghthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient Wor- ld, but also the famous Library of Alexandria that was the big-

gest in the world. The modern Bibliotheca

Alexandrina, commemorating the ancient original, compri- ses numerous museums and galleries, a planetarium and countless books (there are six specialised libraries). With the original having been lost to fire in antiquity, the modern library was only completed in 2002. You should also be sure to vi- sit the Abu al-Abbas al-Mur- si Mosque, one of the oldest and most beautiful mosques in Egypt. While walking thro- ugh the city, you’ll also easi- ly spot the Fort Qaitbey citadel located along the coast. This 15 th -century fortress was bu- ilt on the site of the Lighthou- se of Alexandria and here you can let your imagination run wild and transport you back to some long-gone times of gre- at Egypt.

Nikada nam to nije bilo čudno. Međutim, odra- stanje uz Stelana Skarsgarda nije bilo tako zabavno. Growing up with Stellan wasn’t fun Alexander Skarsgård, actor

work of an actor is difficult, and that it’s rare for someone to suc- ceed in making a living from this calling. He advised me that, because of this, it was important that I only do what I felt was right. And only to devote myself to acting if I be- lieve that I will be able to be one of those privileged actors. It was then that I decided that I would never be an actor like my father. Nonetheless, all these years later, here you are in acting? - It was only many years later, when I was 20 and halfway through my first year of studies, that I real- ised that I missed acting. I didn’t want to reject that interest only to regret it at the age of 50. That’s why I enrolled in drama school in New York, and then came that role in Zoolander. I spent the next three years flying over the Atlantic be- tween Sweden and America, head- ing from one audition to another. Next followed a role in an HBO series, and then that video with Lady Gaga. And then, finally, that famous True Blood. The character of Eric from True Blood is very dif- ferent from my Michael in Melan- cholia, for example, but I feel like I have both of them within me, and that’s what I think is interesting among human beings – that we’re capable of so much, both good and bad, and that we struggle with that constantly. What was the biggest challenge that this series brought you? - This is about two challenges. The first is the fact that this was the first time in my career that I had such a major role, and that I spent seven years in it. That was a priceless experience for me. And the second is perhaps even more de- manding physically. During the sev- en years that I acted in the series, I had to maintain a light complex- ion. Vampires aren’t really known for their tanned skin [laughs]. That was one of the more serious condi- tions for all of us who played vam- pires. And we shot the series in Southern California.

I recall my childhood for the pressure and the question of whether I would manage to succeed my father. I remember giving my maximum energy at the age of 13 just to comprehend who I am and what was then happening to me. It scared me that I was being talked about in the media; that made me insecure

A lexander Skarsgård has portrayed Vi- kings and vampires, robbers and soldiers in the trenches. We can currently see him as sociopath- ic tycoon Lucas Madsen in the se- ries Succession, while he officially took on the crown of the king of the jungle as the most recent in- carnation of Tarzan. However, we can’t summarise his career without mentioning the legendary fact that he tried to kill pop icon Lady Gaga. Of course, he did so in the music video for her song Paparazzi. You almost certain- ly remember the attractive blonde guy who throws Gaga from a balco- ny. Yes, that was a then-not-so-fa- mous Skarsgård. It’s true that the singer later fixed this Scandinavi- an Apollo with a few drops of poi- son, but that hasn’t been the case with his career. For Alexander, that music video was a springboard for

a role in True Blood, one of the most popular Emmy-award-win- ning teen series. It was ten years ago, on the Fox channel, that we in Serbia watched this romanticised vampire drama in which Skarsgård portrays the char- acter of Eric Northman, a guy eter- nally on the edge of good and evil. And as of 3 rd April this year, its sister series, The Vampire Diaries, arrives on the same channel. And recollections of that period, when small screens were dominated by bloodthirsty heroes who oozed sex appeal, provided a topic with which to start our interview with Skars- gård, whose career has to date last- ed for more than two decades. Do you recall the first role that propelled you to star- dom? - That was the movie Zoolander with Ben Stiller, and that was hard- ly a film that inscribed me among the big names of Hollywood. But it

A seriju smo sni- mali u južnoj Kaliforniji.

was a good springboard. I remem- ber it as a crazy and glamorous ex- perience. The very fact that I was shooting a movie with Ben Stiller already appeared surreal to me. I was barely an actor at that time. I was on the streets of New York two weeks later, in a jeep cruising its avenues to the music of the group Wham. I then truly believed that miracles are possible in Hollywood. However, not everything is a result of ordinary mira- cles. You hail from an act- ing family. Your father is Stellan Skarsgård. How much did this fact influ- ence your decision to pur- sue a career in acting? - He is also partly to blame for me applying for the audition for Zo- olander. We are more like brothers than father and son. We hang out together. He often joins my crowd for nights out when we’re in Los An- geles or Stockholm. We never found that weird. However, growing up

with Stellan Skarsgård wasn’t that much fun. At the time when I was little and forming my interests, he was at the peak of his career. I re- member my childhood according to his theatre performances. I didn’t miss a single show. It was with them that I fell in love with acting. But there was also the pressure of be- ing Stellan’s son. How did you handle that pressure? - Poorly. It’s impossible for a child to handle that. I remember giving my maximum energy at the age of 13 just to comprehend who I am and what was then happening to me. It scared me that I was be- ing talked about in magazines or on television; that what Stellan Skars- gård's son looks like, what I'm like as a person and what I like, was a topic for everyone. That made me feel insecure and anxious. I turned for help to the only person who was qualified to give me advice: my fa- ther. He explained to me that the
