ORLÉANS | C’est vendredi dernier (17 mai) qu’avait lieu l’inauguration des travaux d’expansion de l’autoroute 417, de la rue Nicholas à la route 174 d’Ottawa. Bob Chiarelli, député provincial d’Ottawa-Ouest-Nepean, et Phil McNeely, député provincial d’Ottawa-Orléans, se sont joints au maire d’Ottawa, JimWatson, pour la traditionnelle pelletée de terre. Le projet, évalué à 206millions de dollars, vise à accroître la capacité d’achalandage sur l’autoroute. Les travaux amélioreront également la sécurité routière le long de l’autoroute 417 ainsi qu’à la jonction de l’autoroute 417 et de la route 174 d’Ottawa. «Ce projet procurera des avantages in- nombrables aux résidents, et spécialement aux navetteurs de l’est de la ville», a ajouté le maire Watson. Le projet d’expansion de l’autoroute 417 permettra d’ajouter une voie dans chaque direction, entre la rue Nicholas et la route 174 d’Ottawa. Les travaux com- prendront le remplacement rapide des ponts à la hauteur de l’avenue Lees, de la promenade Vanier et du chemin Belfast, l’élargissement et la réhabilitation du Tran- sitway Centre et Est ainsi que du boule- vard Saint-Laurent et la construction d’une passerelle piétonnière reliant la station Train au stade d’Ottawa à la communauté d’Overbrook. Kids on the go to grow a garden

Kortelainen noted that one of the teach- ers at the elementary school had first sug- gested planting some flowers and small shade trees around the school building and in the playground area. Parents have been lobbying the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) for the beautification pro- posal and have now received approval for some limited flower-planting around the school and creation of a memorial garden around the flagpole. “It’s the first step,” said Kortelainen. “This will be an ongoing project.” The project has received some in-kind support from gardening supply outlets like Bergeron in Rockland and Le Migrateur in Cumberland.

Les organisateurs n’ont vraiment rien voulu laisser de côté. La simulation s’est même terminée par une cérémonie funèbre dans la salle communautaire de l’aréna Jean- Marc Lalonde. Yanik Gosselin, élève de douzième année, incarnait le rôle du conducteur dans l’incident simulé. «Tout était tellement réel. C’était assez difficile de voir tout ça et de me faire arrêter par la police et me faire passer les menottes. Tout s’est passé tellement vite

La FTO appuie le projet ESPACE
entre 6 et 12 ans ont été assassinés par l’ex-conjoint et père avant que celui-ci ne s’enlève la vie. L’événement avait alors fait couler beaucoup d’encre sur la scène nationale. Les enfants fréquentaient une école et une garderie à Orléans. Partout dans le monde, les communautés locales qui ont adhéré au projet ESPACE reconnaissent qu’il constitue une manière efficace de faire la promotion des droits des enfants et de prévenir les agressions. Le projet ESPACE vise ainsi à aider les enfants et la communauté d’adultes qui les entourent à acquérir des habiletés importantes et l’information qui les aideront à demeurer «en sécurité, forts et fortes, et libres». «Dans le cadre du soutien que j’offre aux élèves des écoles de notre quartier, j’offre les programmes ESPACE depuis déjà deux ans. ESPACE, pour moi, c’est une occasion pour le personnel scolaire, les parents et les jeunes de partager et discuter entre eux sur toutes les formes d’abus qui les touchent,

La Fondation Trillium de l’Ontario (FTO) a accordé une subvention de 48 500 dollars au programme d’Éducation et Sensibilisation pour la Prévention des Agressions Commises envers les Enfants (ESPACE). Le député d’Ottawa-Orléans, Phil McNeely, s’est joint au Centre de ressources communautaires Orléans-Cumberland (CRCOC) pour annoncer cet appui, vendredi. «J’applaudis l’initiative du CRCOC de poursuivre le programme de prévention ESPACE qui permettra à nos enfants et à leur famille de vivre en toute liberté d’harcèlement, de violence et d’intolérance», a déclaré Phil McNeely. Le projet ESPACE est né des suites d’un événement tragique survenu en 2006 dans la communauté de Sarsfield. À ce moment, une femme ainsi que ses trois enfants âgés

La terre tremble dans la région La région a connu un tremblement de terre à 9h45, vendredi matin. D’une magnitude de 5,2, l’épicentre se situerait près de Shawville, au Québec. Les répli- ques sismiques auraient quant à elles atteint 4,2. Les fenêtres et certains bâtiments ont tremblé. Certaines personnes ont pensé qu’un camion circulant dans leur rue pouvait être le re- sponsable de ces vibrations assez fortes. Plusieurs personnes se seraient ruées à l’extérieur de leur maison. Le séisme, d’une durée approximative de 20 secondes, aurait été ressenti jusqu’à Toronto et Montréal.

The parking lot at the Grenon Your Independent Grocer in Rockland was almost full on May Day Monday as vendors and browsers and buyers at the Annual 1st Rockland Scouts Giant Flea Market filled up every available metre of space and threatened to spill out onto the sidewalk. Scouts representative Jeff Moore reported excellent re- sults for this year’s flea market despite a brief rain shower early in the morning. The annual community flea market is one of the big fundraisers for the local scout troop’s programs and activities.

Drunk driver charged over long weekend
cident in Wendover. When the vehicle was found, the investigating officer noticed the smell of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The driver, a 25-year-old Wendover man, failed a roadside screening test and was taken to the OPP detachment for a full breathalyzer exam. He failed that too and was charged with driving while his blood-alcohol content ex- ceeded 80 milligrams. Domestic call A 28-year-old Rockland will appear in pro- vincial court May 29 in L’Orignal on a charge of mischief for damages under $5000 value. The charge resulted from police investi- gation of domestic dispute call in the Jas- per Crescent neighbourhood in Rockland on May 18.
Police determined that a man and a wom- an were having an argument at the time and during the dispute there was some property damage. Mischief Two complaints about someone throw- ing junk at passing cars on County Road 17 brought police to the Food Basics parking lot on May 13. When police arrived the culprit had either fled or stopped throwing things and tried to blend in with the shoppers. Police are asking residents in the area
and any motorists passing through to keep a watch on a small wooded area near the store. Reports are that the junk thrown came from there. Some vehicles suffered minor damage from the impact of the thrown items. Police report that no accidents resulted this time but are concerned if there are repeat inci- dents. Pot stop An OPP checkstop May 9 in Rockland has resulted in two youths charged with minor possession of marijuana.

The OPP in the National Capital Region and surrounding areas and the Ottawa metro force kept busy writing tickets during the annual Canada Road Safety Week cam- paign last week and on into the May long weekend. More than 200 tickets and charges for a variety of driving infractions were handed out during roadchecks held between May 13 and May 20. Police filed 154 tickets for speeding and one for stunt driving. Mais là, je suis contente de voir ça se confirmer vraiment», a confié Adrienne Brassard. Celle-ci a confié ne pas vouloir faire car- rière dans la création littéraire, mais elle compte bien continuer d’écrire et possible- ment publier un premier roman à l’avenir. Pour parvenir à cette réussite, elle devait participer à quatre épreuves, soit une dictée, une épreuve de lecture, la rédaction d’un résumé et texte argumentatif. Adrienne s’est distinguée en terminant troisième aux épreuves de rédaction pour mériter une
bourse monétaire de 500 dollars. Elle a en- suite obtenu une des meilleures notes pour les épreuves de dictée et de lecture pour se classer parmi les champions du concours. Adrienne Brassard arrive cette année à la fin de son séjour à l’école secondaire. Afin de soulign- er ce voyage historique, la Société franco- ontarienne du patrimoine et de l’histoire d’Orléans (SFOPHO) organise, en collabo- ration avec plusieurs partenaires, une fête tout au long de la journée du 4 juin pro- chain, de 9h30 à 21h. Les activités se dérouleront à l’Île Petrie, au 727, chemin Trim à Orléans. Les gens pourront assister à la mise à l’eau d’un canot d’écorce traditionnel algonquin. Le tout sera agrémenté de témoignages d’élèves de l’école secondaire publique De La Salle (CÉPEO) qui ont créé le canot avec l’aide de Christian Pilon, un authentique voyageur. Ensuite sera présenté le Spectacle du 400e par les comédiens de L’écho d’un peuple. Après, les gens pourront apprécier les artistes, artisans ou interprètes du pat- rimoine qui performeront ou animeront sous le grand chapiteau et sous les diverses tentes. Il y aura entre autres le groupe Les St-Pierre de même que le cultivateur-chan- teur Louis Racine accompagné d’élèves. Il y aura également des expositions, des animations, des panneaux sur l’histoire des familles pionnières et bien d’autres activités. L’entrée et le stationnement seront libres et le terrain est accessible aux personnes à mobilité réduite. Plusieurs dignitaires seront également sur place tels le maire Jim Watson de la Ville d’Ottawa, le député provincial Phil Mc- Neely, le député fédéral Royal Galipeau, ain- si que les directions du Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est et du Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario.
