Powerpoint Engineering raises €20,000 for Down Syndrome Centre in Portlaoise

In February 2022, the electrical industry lost a strong advocate, great ambassador, and friend in Derek Thompson. A former ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year, JIB electrician, Managing Director, ECA Branch Chairman and CEO of ETT/SparkSafe, Derek was focused on increasing the professionalism and competitiveness of the electrical industry. Derek’s legacy will be celebrated by the Derek Thompson Industry Service Award during the Above & Beyond Awards (ABA). The category is presented to an organisation or individual who has contributed to enhancing electrical safety for a sustained period of typically five years. The ABA, created by the Electrical Safety Roundtable in the Workplace group, have been designed to recognise and celebrate individuals and organisations who go above and beyond to enhance and improve electrical safety within the workplace. The awards are now open for entries. The deadline is January 13, 2023, and winners will be announced in February. Three Powerpoint Engineering employees, Conor McGarry, Johan Erasmus, and David Phelan, have raised an incredible €20,000 in aid of Midlands Down Syndrome Centre following a three-day, 575 km cycle from Malin Head in Donegal to Slea Head in the Dingle Peninsula earlier this year. Sean Conlon, who has been working part- time with the trio for the past six years, was the main inspiration behind the fundraising cycle. Sean is a service user at the Down Syndrome Centre Midlands, which is based

in Portlaoise and serves the Laois, Offaly, and Kildare communities. The centre provides essential services, information and support to families and carers of people with Down Syndrome, helping them reach their full potential and create a brighter future. “Down Syndrome Centre is Ireland’s first services-led centre for children with Down Syndrome aged 18 and under and their families,” Johan Erasmus commented. “We were blown away by the donations and messages of support.”

Connectivity for emergency lighting testing

E mergency lighting systems designer and DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is an intelligent addressable emergency lighting testing solution. It allows an installation to be supervised, tested, and monitored from a central location. DALI Connect from Ventilux is a cloud-based emergency lighting testing system with instant connectivity to monitor, report and test emergency luminaires from any location via any smart device. See below why this product is the best option for your electrical installation project. No rewiring manufacturer Ventilux offers a wide range of products compatible with DALI Testing System. Rewiring is not required for wireless implementation in existing projects or future extensions. The system works in conjunction with the wired DALI controllers as a mixed system or completed wireless system. This option is ideal for retrofits and the upgrading of emergency lighting in listed buildings due to ease of installation, whilst also eliminating the requirement to rework ceilings. CABLES

DISTRIBUTED BY PRECISION CABLES, THE NEW DRAKA CONNECTIVITY RANGE PROVES TO BE MORE ROBUST AND IS SUPPLIED IN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PACKAGING… New copper connectivity

D raka, a brand of Prysmian Group – the world leader in power and telecommunications cables and systems – is pleased to launch a new and improved connectivity range of products for use with its copper Draka Universal Cabling System. The new connectivity products are supplied in plastic-free, environmentally friendly packaging. Increased quality and performance The new Draka Cat5e and Cat6 unshielded copper connectivity range has been completely revised and updated for increased quality and performance, whilst also maintaining its competitive edge in the market. Designed with the installer in mind, the connectivity products come with several new features for quick and simple installation. All panels, keystones and modules feature both LSA+ and 110 punch down, whilst Euro and LJ6C modules now come with top and bottom cable fixing points. Vertical and horizontal panels benefit

from increased robustness, with the vertical panel now including a metal rear cable management bar. The Euro and LJ6C modules IDC terminal have a coloured T568B wire map. Lastly, each connectivity product in the new range comes with all the accessories required to complete its installation. The appearance of the connectivity products has transformed and now all come with a modern, uniform look with updated Draka branding. Robust and environmentally friendly The packaging for the new Draka UC copper connectivity range has also benefitted from a completely new look, but more fundamental changes have been made in this area. The new packaging has been designed to be the most environmentally conscious yet, as it is plastic-free. Products are now housed in boxes manufactured with recycled materials and water-based inks are used for the printing. The boxes themselves are 100% reusable

and can be readily recycled. Along with the installer-focused design of the connector, Draka has made improvements to the copper cabling, making the boxes more robust and adding sequential meter markings to the cable sheath. The extra robustness of the boxes eliminates the chance for the cable to snag when pulling. The meter markings enable customers to clearly see how much cable remains within the box, reducing waste and allowing better inventory management. The new copper connectivity range is one of the latest additions to the Draka Universal Cabling System, with further innovative products due to be announced shortly.

COMPANY PROFILE

FROM THE SMALL CONTRACTOR FOUNDED BY PAUL BRAHAM IN THE 1970s TO THE LEADING ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL CONTRACTOR BRAHAM GROUP IS TODAY, THE COMPANY HAS CELEBRATED ITS COMMITMENT TO QUALITY FOR HALF A CENTURY… 50 years of excellence

F or 50 years Braham Group has injected light and life into projects of all shapes, sectors, and sizes. The team boasts expert capabilities across all areas of electrical and mechanical contracting, offering a full, seamless service to all clients. The workload is extremely varied and the contracts range quite considerably in terms of size, but there is one particular trait familiar to all schemes – on-time completions with high standards of quality workmanship. Commitment to quality This commitment to excellence started in 1972, when Paul Braham

and his wife Margaret founded a company in Hill Street, Newry (NI), that a few years later would become Paul Braham and Sons Ltd. Paul’s objective was to establish an electrical contracting and wholesale supply service “unrivalled in the Province”, with three separate divisions: contracting, electrical wholesale and electrical retailing. Paul Braham and Sons became a limited company in October 1977. In 1985, the company moved to the premises in Warrenpoint, where a 4,500 sq ft retail showroom was opened four years later. As the business grew, more space

was necessary for a larger store, roomier offices, and a larger yard, and in 1997 they moved to Milltown Industrial Estate, where Paul built offices and industrial units. A new era Milltown Industrial Estate remained Paul Braham and Sons Ltd.’s home until 2004 when the company was renamed Braham Electrical and finally moved to the current premises on Charlotte Street in Warrenpoint. The company was happy to be in the town centre and to move into freshly built bespoke offices. The new location also brought the electrical wholesalers

“The new name reflects their expansion and ability to provide a complete installation package to clients.”

COMPANY PROFILE

In Paul’s memory Since the company’s foundation in the 1970s, the “Paul Braham” reputation for high standards of workmanship and prompt completion of contracts spread throughout Northern Ireland, with Paul’s teams of electricians working in all corners of the country. Back in the day, Paul maintained daily radio contact with his teams from the head office in Warrenpoint to ensure controlled planning of all operations. In 1993, the Managing Director was appointed chairman of the Electrical Contractors Association due to his experience and contribution to the industry, but also the considerable emphasis he placed on training and personal development. Sadly, Paul Braham passed away in 2021 and didn’t get to see the company he started reach the 50-year mark. To celebrate Paul’s life, his son Thomas worked closely with Newry Lions Club to organise a memorial cycle and walk in aid of Cancer Research UK and Northern Ireland in April 2022. The event raised over £13,000 for cancer research and offered everyone an opportunity to support a great cause and remember Paul’s community spirit. “My dad built this business on his personal core values and instilled them in the heart of our company,” commented Director Thomas Braham. “He valued people, hard work, job quality and skilled workmanship, but also respect for others and the personal touch everyone brought to the company.”

The business is managed from the headquarters in Warrenpoint and now accounts for 60% of the company’s workload. After 50 years in the business, the company was once again ready to embark on a new chapter as “Braham Group”. The new name reflects their expansion and ability to provide a complete installation package to clients, including Electrical Contracting, Mechanical

senior management team is formed by Managing Director Ciaran McQuaid and Directors Thomas Braham and Jason McQuaid. Braham Group’s new state-of-the- art IT system Evolution gathers all accounts, contract management documents, procurement, human resources processes and health and

MEET THE EXPERIENCED AND VERSATILE PEOPLE BEHIND THE COMPANY’S VENTURES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER… The core of Braham Group

F rom apprentices to electricians, foremen to contract managers, wholesale to administrative staff, accounts, estimating, HR, health and safety, it takes everyone to make the wheels turn smoothly and make Braham Group the company it is today. Braham Group relies on 40 full-time members of staff, as well as over 100 sub- contractors and self-employed engineers. Contract Management Team This team has grown over the years and now comprises four managers who lead projects on both sides of the border. Both Ciaran Farrell and Aisling Doyle started as apprentices at Braham Group, and in 2022 stepped up to become Junior Contract Managers. Ciaran started at the company when he was 16 and now oversees contracts in the South. Aisling began working for the Group at the age

of 19 and took advantage of the training opportunities and support at the company: she completed an Accounts apprenticeship and become an Accounts Technician before taking this new position. Matt Beattie has been a Senior Contracts Manager since 2018 and heads up major contracts in the North, while Colin Slevin, also a Senior Contracts Manager, is in charge of street lighting projects, having moved into the office from site in 2008. Estimating and Bid Team Collectively, Braham Group’s Estimating and Bid Team relies on over 100 years of industry experience in successfully tendering major electrical projects. Kieran Brennan has been with the company for six years and plays a key estimating role in all contracting tenders. Jason McQuaid is Braham Group’s Estimating Director and oversees the tendering process for all projects. Jim

Graham, part of the previous Senior Management Team, is Braham Group’s Bid Manager and looks after all street lighting tenders and bid writing. Accounts team Paul McDermott is the Group’s Financial Controller and oversees all accounts’ elements within the business. Emily Walsh is a new member of the team and has taken over the role of Accounts Technician. HR HR and Office Manager Josephine Morgan started at the company in 1997 and has managed the administrative team and the office since then. She is the multitasker behind all office staff and training needs. Health and Safety Ali Laverty has recently joined the Group as SHEQ Manager to oversee all safety, health, environment, and quality (SHEQ) aspects of projects across the companies.

COMPANY PROFILE

BRAHAM GROUP HAS LAUNCHED A NEW BRAND IDENTITY AND WEBSITE TO REFLECT THEIR WHOLE PORTFOLIO OF SERVICES… A new vision

I n the past few years, with operations at full steam on both sides of the border, and expanding beyond electrical services and wholesale, it was time also for the Braham brand to evolve. In 2022, after a six-month process, the company launched their new image and logo under the name of Braham Group to reflect their whole portfolio of services: Electrical Contracting, Mechanical Contracting and Street and Floodlighting. After 18 years using the Braham Electrical logo, the whole team contributed ideas for the company’s “facelift”. “The branding company gave us a few options, and we got input from the staff before arriving at the final design,” explained Director Jason McQuaid. “It was important to get their feedback because we didn’t want to simply cast a logo but give everyone a

chance to have their say in it. Some suggestions were incorporated into the new design. It meant that everybody would feel involved in the process and happy with the end result,” added MD Ciaran McQuaid. The company decided to keep “Braham” in the brand’s name, as it is known by clients and suppliers, and the result is a simple but bold brand identity to take the company forward for many years to come. The website was completely redesigned from scratch rather than changed, with a focus on showcasing completed projects and giving customers a better understanding of the services provided by the company. “There have been quite a few comments coming in and everyone is quite positive about it. They say the new look and the new website are clean and fresh,” Jason commented.
