Labour Day long weekend, close to 200 or more Harley owners arrived to enjoy all the events set up during the festival and welcomed both Hawkesbury residents and all other visitors to town for the weekend to join the fun, from the live music all-day either at the central registration tents or at Confederation Park on Isle de Chenail where the children’s activities and the show ‘n’ shine were held. The festival included several perfor- mances by the OPP Golden Helmets preci- sion motorcycle riding unit on their Harley Police Specials.
Part of Main Street in downtownHawkes- bury was closed during both the Bike Fest and also the Auto Expo, which took place on Sunday. While the Harley fans were blessed with sunshine every day, fans of classic cars had to contend with an almost steady rain Sunday, though that did not discourage everyone, both car owners and automotive fans, from touring around to check out the vehicles and also take advantage of an afternoon auto- graph session with several area athletes who are playing in the Canadian Football League as part of the Ottawa RedBlack lineup.
One very popular attraction at this year’s Bike Fest was the “pop a wheelie” machine which let riders and would-be riders do a wheelie on an actual Harley in a safe and controlled manner. The lineup was long for this ride. —photo Gregg Chamberlain

Mohawk Nation objects to cement plant project
Action Champlain, a grassroots community group, about the environmental and other impacts of the project. Makuch, who chaired the meeting, sta- ted that the earliest date possible for a full hearing on the matter is September 2018 with a five-week window kept open then, to allow all sides to present arguments and witness testimony. “The best I could do for you is a year from now,” Makuch told representatives for all the parties involved in the current appeal process. Grand Chief Simon toldMakuch that the Mohawk Nationwas never consulted about the proposed project. He expressed concern about the potential environmental impact of the plant’s effluent on his community which is located downstream along the Ottawa River. He indicated that the issue of abori- ginal rights should take precedence over an economic development project. “Colacem is going to have to answer some serious questions,” said Grand Chief Simon. He cited Section 35 of the Constitution Act concerning First Nation rights and noted

He stated that he will contact federal Environment Minister Cathe- rineMcKenna on thematter and also take it to the PrimeMinister’s Office “if necessary”. There are two appeal applications before the OMB dealing with the Colacemcement plant project proposal. The company is appealing Champlain Township council’s rejection of the rezoning application. Action Champlain, a local community group, is appealing the decision of the United Coun- ties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) to accept the rezoning request. There are also a number of individuals living in and around the L’Orignal area who have also registered with the OMB as inte- rested parties in the appeal process and their opinions will be included in the board’s review of the appeal applications next year in UCPR council chamber starting Sept. 4 at 10:30 a.m. The OMB will suspend the hearing on Sept. 12 and 26 which are the days when the UCPR council has its regular meetings.

The counties will receive $2,595,854; Russell Township, $463,557; Champlain Township, $260,647; Clarence-Rockland, $704,898; Casselman, $110,242; East Hawkesbury Township, $101,395; Hawkesbury, $320,784; Alfred- Plantagenet Township, $279,588; North Glengarry Township, $311,663; and The Nation Municipality, $354,744. that the money goes towards local infras- tructure needs, including upgrading aging roads and bridges. “We will continue to build 21st-Century infrastructure that meets our communities’ future needs,” said Drouin. “It certainly is to our benefit,” said Gary Barton, warden for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR), to have this stable and regular funding.”
Budget plans for next year will be a bit easier now for municipal councils in the Glengarry-Prescott-Russell riding. The federal gas tax allocation for GPR for next year will bemore than $5.5million in total. Francis Drouin, Liberal MP for Glengarry- Prescott-Russell, announced, on August 31, the new indexed figure for his riding from the federal gas tax fund. The federal gas tax fund takes a portion of the federal gas tax on

Le sergent Marc Tessier de la Sûreté du Québec a signalé auxmédias que l’homme, dont le nomn’a pas été annoncé, a pu rega- gner la rive et demander de l’aide. La police et les pompiers de la région ont lancé la recherche, à la fois sur le terrain et en utilisant un hélicoptère de la police. Le corps de Mme Gagnon a été retrouvé plusieurs heures plus tard, à environ 100 mètres en aval de l’endroit où le kayak avait chaviré. Le sergent Tessier a déclaré que l’on ne soupçonne aucun acte criminel en rapport avec le décès de Mme Gagnon.

Carjacker trap foiled Carjackers in the Greater Ottawa area are try- ing a “pincer maneuver” trap to catch some of their victims and may seek potential marks in other parts of Eastern Ontario. Ottawa Police Services have a report of a recent incident where a woman, parked at an Ottawa bank branch and while she was inside, noticed a man watching her.The man then got into a red Dodge Caravan outside.When the woman finished her banking business, she drove away in her own vehicle. She noticed first the red Caravan pulling up in front of her and then a red Toyota Matrix pulling into position right behind her. She managed to get out of the apparent trap by doing a U-turn. As she drove away, her vehicle dashboard sen- sor warned of low pressure in one tire. Later inspection showed the tire had been slashed. Police have a license plate number for one of the suspicious vehicles and warn other motorists to be alert for any similar activity when they are out and about. – Gregg Chamberlain

Le bois et la forêt à l’honneur à Riceville
Organisé par Boisés Est, l’Expo Bois et Forêt aura lieu à Riceville le dimanche 10 sep- tembre de 10 h à 17 h pour encourager l’utilisation de la forêt de façon valorisante. La journée comprendra plusieurs activités et démonstrations pour toute la famille. On y retrouvera des kiosques de vendeurs, d’artisans, d’organismes et d’artistes pour lesquels le bois et les forêts sont une source de revenue, d’inspiration, de création, de santé ou de ressourcement. Des démons- trations d’élagage d’arbres en hauteur et de pratiques de sécurité sont également prévus. À compter de 15 h, unmarché pour les ven- deurs et les acheteurs de bois sera disponible avec une grande variété de bois local.
Plusieurs autres activités sont aussi prévues dont un spectacle musical avec Eric Lasch et son RiverStone Band, Louise Audette, Janet Shipley et Steve Mah, ainsi que Michael Evans et Jazz Laforge-Rioux. Au programme également : un spectacle de jeunes talents locaux, une prestation de L’Alp Horn Trio les Contes forestiers – un cercle de conteurs et conteuses de l’est de l’Ontario et plus encore. Glass Tiger, the Juno Award-winning band, whose hit single “Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone) placed in Billboard magazine’s Top Ten list, is one of several acts coming to Hawkesbury as part of the provincial government’s ONTour series of
concerts marking the 150 th anniversary of the province. Joining Glass Tiger for the sesquicenten- nial ONTour concert in the park Sept. 15 will be David Wilcox, Andrew Hyatt, and Stef Paquette.
The show begins at 6 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Admission to the concert is free for all ages of music fans.
One of Canada’s big name bands for the 80s is the headliner for the ONTour free concert event at Confederation Park in Hawkesbury on Sept. 15.

Première édition du Festival Pomme et Citrouille

Après avoir subi un accident vasculaire cérébral (AVC) au cours de l’été 2016, Mme Boudreault est remontée sur scène pour livrer des conférences touchantes et drôles en même temps. Elle sera accompagnée de son conjoint Louis-Philippe et partagera son histoire et sa façon de traverser les épreuves de la vie avec positivisme. Les billets sont disponibles pour le souper-conférence ou tout simplement la conférence. Le samedi et le dimanche seront des journées pleines d’activités pour la famille, incluant une course à pied de 1.5 km, 5 km ou 10 km organisée par le Domaine Cléroux. Il y aura aussi des structures gonflables pour les enfants, des tours de charrette et auto-cueillette de pommes et de citrouilles, des jeux extérieurs, des visites d’animaux, des spectacles et des courses d’aventures.
La Ferme Drouin de Casselman, en partenariat avec le Domaine Cléroux, tiendra la première édition du Festival de la Pomme et de la Citrouille cette fin de semaine du 8 au 10 septembre. Denis Drouin de la Ferme Drouin et son voisin ont décidé d’inaugurer ce festival pour célébrer l’arrivée de l’automne et ses paysages, en s’inspirant des pommes et des citrouilles qu’ils cultivent chez eux. Le festival se déroulera toute la fin de semaine et commencera par une soirée spéciale le vendredi 8 septembre avec une conférence de Josée Boudreault, une humoriste et animatrice de radio et de télévision québécoise.

hosting the 2017 Youth Summit for Biodiver- sity and Leadership. The three-day confer- ence is Sept. 22 to 24 at the YMCA Geneva Park in Orillia. The SNC will sponsor one of the youth leaders eligible to attend the conference. Youth leaders, ages 14 to 19, from across the province will attend interactive workshops on sustainability, nature exploration, and climate action.
“We’re excited to work with local youth to provide themwith opportunities to gain a bet- ter understanding of environment issues and insights into sound, sustainable practices,” said Holly Nyenkamp, SNC communication and outreach official. “We invite youth to write us a letter explaining local environmen- tal issues within their community. We would also like to know what participants hope to gain from the summit.”
SNC sponsorship will cover the cost for its sponsored student for workshop participa- tion, accommodations, andmeals during the summit. Ontario Nature staff and volunteers will provide supervision during the weekend event. The deadline for applications with the accompanying letters of intent was Sept. 6. Inquiries whether late applications are pos- sible should go to hnyenkamp@nation.on.ca.
