Queen ’ s College Whole School Newsletter

20 January 2023

Hello 2023

Wassail Celebration

Mr Julian Noad - Head of College

full support and very best wishes. We are advertising for a likely September start. This change does provide me the opportunity to review and refresh our sports vision and provision; I look forward to Queen ’ s leading the way with a high quality sports programme for our time. Back to the here and now, sports will take centre stage at the weekend in spite of the weather. The boys meet The Collegiate School (formerly Colston ’ s of Bristol) at hockey and the girls play King ’ s Bruton at netball. We shall also be sending a team to the Taunton area cross - country champs. With kayaking, climbing and pony - trekking on offer, and the boarders enjoying a ‘ glow sports ’ session, there is much going on, as ever. Enjoy a fine weekend. Julian

I offer a warm welcome to the first Bulletin of 2023.

I mention again that we have boarders wishing to offer babysitting services. This document explains how to take up their offer. In a little bit of pagan madness, Mr Mann and the Food team hosted a Wassail in Wyvern House garden on Tuesday evening. Our trees, adorned with toast and ribbons, now have more energy, I ’ m told - if the apples are juicy next year, I ’ ll be a happy fellow. Parents are reminded that Mr Mann and the wider Arts faculty have challenged pupils to develop ‘ Patterns and Patterning ’ as part of the House Arts Festival, with a gala evening on 12 February. The eagle - eyed may have noticed an advertisement out this week for a new Director of Sport. I share that Mr Tom Walter will leave Queen ’ s College at Easter to explore new challenges. He will leave with our

In the senior school, mock examinations have been superbly delivered and now completed: staff have managed the process magnificently; and Year 11 and 13 pupils have responded terrifically. I look forward to hearing of positive results and clear plans to fine tune. Year 7 Parents have enjoyed their first meetings with teachers, both online and face - to - face. It was good to feel the warmth of feedback. It is the turn of Year 10 parents next week - I hope that you have booked your slots. Last evening, Mrs N and I very much enjoyed receiving Year 10 and 11 parents for drinks. And, this afternoon, we met with Mrs Williams ’ French House Year 11 pupils for tea.

House Festival of Creative Arts launches Festival of Creative Arts

We are delighted to announce the launch of the exciting all - new Faculty of Art, Design, and Food 'Festival of Creative Arts' which takes the form of three separate challenges to run over the term until Tuesday 7th February 2023. The theme for all three challenges is ‘ Patterns and Patterning ’ and the competitive contests across the creative arts are open to all Years across Queen's College. The first challenge is to make a piece of artwork for Art, the second a moving kinetic sculpture for Design and Technology, and the third a plated Tunnock ’ s Teacake for Food and Nutrition. For each challenge, the Faculty of Art, Design, and Food will support pupils to explore the creative arts in greater depth in each discipline. We encourage all pupils to ask their teachers about when and how they can be involved including time after school and at weekends and all the resources available to them in school. For each challenge, the Faculty of Art, Design, and Food will support pupils to explore the creative arts in greater depth in each discipline. We encourage all pupils to ask their teachers about when and how they can be involved including time after school and at weekends and all the resources available to them in school. Mr Mann, Head of the Faculty of Art, Design, and Food said, “ we want to promote the many dimensions of the creative arts sector and celebrate the creative culture of our school community and at the same time we want to create further opportunities for all pupils to showcase their fantastic work outside lessons, in keeping with our school motto: ‘ we learn not for school but for life ’. We invite entries from this week onwards to join us in this exciting new ‘ Festival of Creative Arts ’ at Queen ’ s College To read more about the challenges click here.

Prep School Mr Henry Matthews - Head of Prep

Food Diversity Day

It has been a purposeful start to the new year here in the Prep School, with target setting and resolutions aplenty from both children and staff. The chilly weather

I also write today with news of staffing changes, two of which are within the Prep School. Firstly, we will say goodbye to Mrs Di Thompson just before half term. Mrs Thomspon has worked as a teaching assistant in the Prep School for 11 years, working closely with Pre - Prep children in their vital first steps in education. Mrs Thompson leaves us to enjoy a well - earned retirement. We also say goodbye to Mrs Oliver at the end of the Spring Term. Mrs Oliver has worked at Queen ’ s for just over 5 years, teaching a wide range of subjects and has been a brilliant form lead to many children and most recently leading expertly on the new Food and Nutrition programme in Upper Prep. She leaves us to take on new challenges and I am sure she will also continue to enjoy travelling in her much loved campervan. Finally, as noted by Mr Noad, we say goodbye to Mr Tom Walter, Director of Sport, at the end of term. We wish all three the very best in their future endeavours and will ensure a proper goodbye in due course. You may be aware that adverts for these positions and others are now making their way around various networks and we look forward to making more exciting appointments as the school continues to grow and develop. We will keep you posted on developments as they arise. We are all looking forward to getting our dancing shoes on later this afternoon at the Prep School disco. I

am sure the children will have a great time showing off their best moves and I know the staff can ’ t wait for the Macerena so that they can also get on the dance floor. A big thank you to the QCC team and particularly Mrs Swanson, Mrs Matthews and Mrs Brown for organising this event. As we look ahead to the weekend, an intrepid bunch of Year 6 explorers will be out on the Quantocks to take part in a night walk as they work towards their John Muir Award in Outdoor Education. From hearing the stories of last year, I am sure there will be plenty of challenges, fun and camaraderie. Finally, I would like to invite you to attend our next Parent Forum which provides you with the opportunity to catch up with me and discuss anything related to Queen ’ s or your child ’ s education. The next forum will take place on Wednesday 1st February between 8:30 and 9:30am. If you would like to attend, please complete this form.

certainly hasn ’ t slowed us down and, as we look forward to 2023, we begin the year invigorated and ready to get going on many exciting projects. The first of these is the development of our classrooms. As a parent, you may have heard some interesting stories from your children about strange things happening in the classrooms this week. Some children may have even asked to bring in slippers to wear in school! I can confirm, these requests, like the stories, are all true and part of an exciting project we are embarking on to revitalise our learning spaces. The aim is that children will have much greater control over their learning and the work they do in class allowing choice when using a range of spaces. Some may choose to work in a group with others, some in an individual quiet space, but the concept is that there is improved flexibility and adaptability in the learning environment - and yes shoes off learning is a part of this! The initial trials have been incredibly well - received by the children with many suggestions for ‘ collaboration stations ’ and ‘ reading nooks ’ which we will continue to implement over the coming weeks. As we move through this project, we will invite parents in to see the exciting changes we are making. Watch this space!

I wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

Nursery Round - up Nursery News From Mrs Donna Kershaw - Highgrove Nursery Manager This week's weather has been perfect for supporting our winter theme in the Puddleducks room. The children have been investigating the ice each morning in the garden. The short flurry of snow caused huge excitement! The children have also been looking at hibernation, discussing where animals live and where they might snuggle up to hide and sleep. This week across the Nursery we have also started our cooking sessions in the Tiggywinkles and Puddleducks rooms. Puddelducks enjoyed making shortbread on Monday and then Tiggywinkles enjoyed making fruit kebabs. Cottontails have had fun in the role play area this week and Tiggywinkles have had some lovely yoga sessions based on their focus book ‘ We ’ re Going on a Bear Hunt ’.

Nursery School News From Miss Lizzie Hayes - Head of Nursery School

The Nursery School children have been making the most of the seasonal weather this week and the activities have taken on a bit of a watery theme! The icy weather has enabled the children to explore the properties of ice, both outside in the garden, and inside using frozen objects in the water tray. There was great excitement when it began to flurry with snow one morning, however as it did not settle, the children decided to make their own snow by cutting up paper and sprinkling across the home corner.

Further water activities continued with a floating and sinking science experiment where the children were encouraged to test a variety of objects to see what would happen through careful questioning and critical thinking skills. The children then recorded on paper the results of their experiment using their developing pencil and scissor skills. This week's kitchen/garden club also featured a watery experiment using celery and food colouring to see what might happen when celery is left to drink a variety of different coloured liquids. The children will be carefully monitoring this experiment over the next few days to see what might happen.

Prep School Prep Sports Round - up

Sadly, the girls matches were cancelled on Wednesday due to significant snow at Perrott Hill. The girls and staff were naturally disappointed to miss out, however we spent the afternoon working hard to hone our skills and improve our match play. All the girls worked hard playing over two and a half hours of netball. The boys still managed to travel to Millfield for their first matches of the season. Some great games ensured and both A teams showed courage and ability against tough opposition. Well done to Year 2 who had their first hockey match last week and Year 3 and 4 have worked hard in their first lessons of the sports for this term.

Our first set of matches for U8 and U9 are on Monday 30 January. Reminder: Year 6 Girls are invited to watch Team Bath Netball next term. A letter has gone out to parents to indicate interest. This replaces the trip this term that we have had to move due to Moana performances. Reserve a place.

Year 1

Year 1 had a fantastic visit to Secret World Wildlife Rescue on Monday. The children learned all about our local wildlife, different habitats, and how to spot evidence of them through tracks and signs. The trip began with a tour of the site

where we met some beautiful animals and heard about their individuality and character. Fortunately, the weather was dry and bright for our tracks and signs workshop in which we trekked through the surrounding fields, spotting animal pathways.

During this session, we spotted a large herd of roe deer, fox footprints in the mud, and a vast badger set. The children and staff came away enthused to continue our learning about animal habitats over the course of this half term.

Pre - Prep Art Club

The Pre - Prep Art club have been learning about the famous French artist, Paul Cézanne and the still - life art he produced. After looking at his paintings of apples, the children made their own pictures of a bowl of apples. Their teachers were really impressed with their work.

Prep School Year 6 - Art

Exam Congratulations Congratulations to Alex in Year 4 for completing his ABRSM initial piano exam which he took at the very end of last term!

Year 6 have been studying colour and have researched Alma Thomas, the first African American woman to gain an Arts degree. At the time she also stood out for her use of colour and was criticised for her non - political works of art, when all of the other African American artists were portraying their inequality and suffering. Our students have used a lot of colour and have painted as well as creating their own mosaics. They then painted stones to lay around the tree to demonstrate our own links to the theme of ‘ Democracy ’ and also the positivity that we have!

Year 5 - Land Art Project Miss Spall ’ s Year 5 groups have been studying the aerial views of rivers and streams and have looked at Richard Long, the famous land artist. They have created silver leaves from ceramic and have inscribed their patterns into them, creating beautiful delicate pieces. We have hung them in a tree so through the winter, when the tree is bare, the leaves will shimmer and catch the light. When the leaves grow again, they will glint between the green.

Year 5 - Slime

The Year 5 children have been making slime as part of their ‘ Changing State ’ science topic. A lot of fun was had by all! The pupils were successful with their creations and were able to confidently discuss aspects of the science behind why slime behaves in the way that it does.

Prep School Year 4 - Freezing Frames

This week Year 4 have used Freeze Framing in their lessons, surrounded by a hand built castle fort. They have used this technique to help retell and reinforce the storyline to the classic traditional tale, The Princess and the Pea.

The dance results have arrived! Dance Results

Back in November the Grade 4 and Year 3 students took their Ballet exam. All the children really enjoyed showcasing their work to an external examiner who then marked and graded them, to enable the children to move up to the next grade.

We are pleased to announce that Megan received a distinction for her Grade 4 and Maryam, Mary - Tess and Olivia received merits. Whilst in the Year 3 exam, Megan received a distinction, with Amelia, Eva, Rebekah and Gabrielle received a mixture of high merits and merits. A very well done to all the children involved; they worked extremely hard, and Miss Bryony and Miss Tanya are very happy to see that their hard work has paid off!

With Classes from Celebrity Chefs and World Famous Authors Food Diversity Day

From Year 4 to Year 10, pupils learnt about championing local food producers, as they tasted West Country farmhouse cave - aged cheddar from local traditional Ford Farm cheesemakers, used organic stoneground wholemeal flour from the oldest working water mill in Somerset at Burcott Mill, ate fresh sourdough loves of breads from local bakers with heritage grains from Rumwell Farm Shop in Taunton and dipped the bread in the South West's best extra virgin, single cold pressed Rapeseed Oil from the Somerset family Fussell Farm. Lessons even included the opportunity to sample real vanilla pods from a South West food producer called LittlePod helping traditional vanilla farmers improve their livelihoods and preserve the rainforests of Madagascar. Dan Saladino from BBC Radio 4 said, "we wanted to create a manifesto from Food Diversity Day that encompasses all the ideas to save food diversity around the world. Number one is education and sharing stories of biodiversity and where our food comes from, so a real highlight of the day for me was hearing from Queen's College streaming the event live and sending us in really great thought provoking questions". Mr Mann, Head of Faculty of Art, Design, and Food said, "we were absolutely delighted to be part of the first 'Food Diversity Day'. There was a truly amazing line - up of inspiring food industry speakers to celebrate the incredible range of foods available to us and learn why food diversity matters so much in today's world".

The day had a packed schedule as 11 live talks, presentations and debates were live - streamed to our Food and Nutrition classes throughout the day. The list of food experts that joined the classes at Queen's College included organiser Dan Saladino (BBC Radio 4 presenter, journalist, campaigner, and author of 'Eating to Extinction') with Sheila Dillon (BBC Radio 4 presenter, journalist, and food campaigner), Professor Tim Spector OBE (food scientist, presenter and bestselling author of 'Food For Life'), Professor Tim Benton (Director of Energy, Environment, and Resources at the Royal Institute of International Affairs), Michelin star celebrity chef Michael Caines MBE (chef Lympstone Manor, Devon), Mitch Tonks (chef Rockfish and The Seahorse, Brixham), Akwasi Mensa (chef Tatale, London), Neil Forbes (chef St Honore, Edinburgh), Luke Holder (chef Lime Wood, Hampshire), Melissa Thompson (chef and author of 'Motherland Jamaican Cookbook'), Sanjay Kumar (celebrity chef), Polly Russell (author, presenter and food historian), Alys Fowler (horticulturalist), Sinead Fortune (Gaia Foundation), Guy Watson (Riverford), Jimmy Woodrow (Pasture For Life), Frederik Leroy (Vrije University, Brussels), Paula MacIntyre (presenter, Hamely Kitchen, Northern Ireland), and Shane Holland (Slow Food UK). Pupils learnt what is meant by 'Food Diversity' as part of “ Food Provenance ”, the reasons why Food Diversity is important to Food Sustainability, and identify rare, endangered, or forgotten foods and processes.

Senior School Sports Round - up

The return after Christmas for staff and students has seen a change of sports for the girls and boys, with girls now playing netball and boys playing hockey as the main sports for the spring term. The boys this week had fixtures against Clifton College on Saturday and Millfield on Wednesday afternoon. Against Millfield Prep School the U13As had a thrilling match with chances at both ends. The boys played solidly in defence, whilst also winning all of the long balls. Players of the match were Oliver with fantastic passing in midfield, Mate with awesome play on the left and Connah with a good debut at centre back. The U12A boys enjoyed a very competitive and enjoyable game, showing huge

progress throughout the game both technically and tactically. They showed great determination and came away with a couple of great team goals. In netball this week the girls played Wellington as a season opener. For the 1st VII it was a competitive and very

physical match to begin the season. Nevertheless it was a superb performance from the team who moved the ball well through the mid court and into the D. Millie, Edie, and Yas were forced to work hard to get the ball but they shot well, drawing and beating Wellington in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarter. Turnovers by Jen and Osa in the opposition D kept us in the game. It was also a fantastic opening fixture for the 15As, who were dominating in attack with accurate and quick passing into the circle and lots of defensive turnovers. The girls won their game convincingly and will be an exciting team to watch for the season ahead. Read more match reports here.

Equestrian

Congratulations to Harriet and Francesca, who competed at Kings Sedgemoor Equestrian Centre in the NSEA Jumping with Style Arena Eventing earlier this month. Brilliant rounds by both riders. Harriet came 3rd and has qualified for the NSEA National Championships. Well done to each of them for battling the elements! Francesca also came 3rd place in the 100cm at Moreton equestrian centre show jumping. Harriet had another successful event last weekend riding Pegasus at Chard Equestrian where she won 2 Arena Eventing classes, the open 70cm and the qualifier for the Pony Club Spring Championships at Arena UK in February.

Senior School Sports Young Player of the Year

Paper Sculpture Club Miss Spall ’ s Year 7’ s have created some fantastic huge masks out of paper in their Friday afternoon Paper Sculpture Club. Here is the final result!

Tom in Year 11 has won the Somerset County Sports Young Player of the Year award. Tom received the award last Friday night from Max Waller at the Wyvern Club. Congratulations Tom!

Wassail This week we had a Wassail celebration in the garden of Wyvern House. Wassailing is an ancient tradition observed on Old Twelfth Night in Somerset, and other cider producing counties. The rituals involved in the mid - winter celebrations are carried out to ensure a good apple harvest for the coming year. Our pupils loved learning all about the traditional celebration, rituals and the warming mulled apple juice! There are more photos on Flickr. Last week Miss Spall ’ s Art Enterprise Group were busy making willow crowns for the Wassail, they looked fabulous! Read more about our Wassail celebration here.

Senior School Visiting Artist Irena Shumatora

Last week, we were overjoyed to welcome Ukrainian artist Irena Shmatova to the art department Irena presented her sketchbooks, telling very real yet comical stories to give our pupils a taste of how she works and where her inspiration comes from. She explained how she's been using her drawings to explain visually to her young son what is happening in their country at the moment, and why they have to go somewhere else to keep safe. Irena's drawings are full of intricate patterns and characters that make you smile and

marvel at her ability to create such wonderful and clever illustrations. This was part of the inspiration for our Festival of Arts competition and I feel that the pupils really were motivated to now go on to create their own work from this session.

The visit is part of the inspiration for our Festival of Arts competition, and the pupils are now feeling very motivated to create their own work after this inspiring session - A huge thank you to Irena!

Outdoor Education Update

The 35 and 45 teams were training again on Dartmoor last Sunday. They were completing a linear walk between Okehampton and Postbridge to help them familiarise themselves with the Eastern side of the moor. The weather was really challenging with snow, rain, hail, sleet and sunshine! River crossings were therefore difficult as was navigation at times.

Pupils quickly learned that Dartmoor can be a very inhospitable place! They got the opportunity to really test their poor weather kit and most will be taking more layers and different gloves next time. Overall, it was a very valuable experience for the group and I was incredibly impressed with how positively they approached the day, despite the poor conditions. Well done to All.

Senior School Outdoor Education Update

At the end of last term 39 pupils from Years 8 - 12 went on a ski trip to Pila in the Aosta Valley. The resort in the North Italian Alps boasts spectacular views from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn, and with great weather for most of the week, this stunning panorama was the back drop to some wonderful skiing. The group was relatively inexperienced as a whole but after a few days even the beginner's were exploring the resort and making the most of some great early season skiing conditions. Progress was rapid due to some good instruction and very enthusiastic pupils. Apres Ski activity highlights included Ice skating, bowling and an 'all you could eat' pizza evening. The hotel food was also very well received, although it took some pupils a few days to work out that the pasta course was just a starter (after their third helping!) The entire group were wonderful company, positive, enthusiastic, well organised, and sensible. They all had a brilliant trip and were an absolute credit to the school. Thank you to all pupils and staff for such a memorable trip. More photos will be available on Flickr soon.

Boarders Corner Cotlake House

Our Cotlake House boarders had an incredible time last weekend at Clip n Climb at Weston - Super - Mare. Not only did they conquer all the climbing walls, but they also took on the 11 metre drop slide challenge!

Hutton and Highgrove - Mrs Shearman

On Wednesday evening, I was lucky enough to attend the Hutton / Highgrove prefects dinner. We spent a few hours at Zizzi ’ s in Taunton enjoying some lovely food and excellent company.

The house prefects are so important to the running of the boarding houses and staff are grateful for everything they do. The evening was spent with the prefects from this year and last year and was a welcome mid - weeks break.

A Big Thanks Followings "Together at Queen ’ s ”

British Physics Olympiad The British Physics Olympiad aims to encourage the study of physics and recognise excellence in young physicists. The annual exam is designed to challenge the future Newtons and Einsteins with questions that are based on the A - level specification but taken to a much higher level. Our physicists had spent co - curricular time preparing for this, exploring ways to tackle complex problems. This year's questions included calculating the peak wavelength of light that the sun will emit when it becomes a red giant, predicting interference patterns of X - Rays bouncing off layers of atoms in materials, and using calculus to find the gravitational pressure at the centre of a white dwarf star. Congratulations to Charlie, Jane and Tom for receiving such fantastic marks.

Following the “ Together at Queen ’ s ” event where Queen ’ s raised £452 for the “2 BU ” charity we are pleased to receive this certificate of thanks . “2 BU - Somerset ” provides a specialist support service serving the needs of young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ+) people aged 11 - 25 across Somerset. Their central aim is to help build resilience and confidence and support each young LGBTQ+ person to a place of healthy self - acceptance.
