Cover Photo - Alfred and Elizabeth Mercer moved their family from Kent, England to Emporia, KS to Matfield Green, KS in 1871. They homesteaded one of our headquarters in 1872 and they started running and putting together Pioneer Ranch. Their youngest son William was born on the homestead in 1874. He married his wife Hannah Brock May 8, 1907. William and Hannah had 5 children. Hannah passed away in 1931 and William in 1936. At that time their 2 sons Alfred and David (Dave’s Grandpa) took the reins and kept on ranching. David Brock Mercer married Hazel Walker on May 8, 1937. David and Hazel also had 5 children. They lost their oldest son in infancy. They lost their youngest son, Paul and daughter in law Jeri in a tragic car wreck July 24, 1976. Paul was the cowboy and planning to take over the ranch. After this tragedy the future was unknown for a bit, but, Dave and Hazel’s daughter, Nancy (Dave’s Mom) and her husband, Rick Griffin took over and started running Pioneer Ranch and leasing all of the land that David B Mercer INC had acquired. That’s how it is still done today. David B. Mercer INC is owned and operated by David and Hazel’s remaining children Jim Mercer and Marilyn Rowley, along with Rick Griffin for Nancy. We lost Nancy in 2020, But today, Dave and Amber Griffin along with Rick own and operate Pioneer Ranch LC. Dave and Amber have 3 kids, Brock, Wyatt, and Hannah. Brock got married this past summer to his wife Paige. They’re finishing up college at Fort Hays State and plan to come back to the ranch. Wyatt just started college at Butler County JUCO and is playing baseball and majoring in Finance. Hannah is going to be a 7th grader and also loves helping on the ranch. Mainly with the horses. Our kids are the 6th generation to grow up on Pioneer Ranch. We manage land for a couple of other landowners as well in the SW corner of Chase County in the Flint Hills. We run a mostly Angus based cow herd that is majority Fall calves. We also buy and run stockers through grass season. Normally, selling in July/August. We also take in customer yearlings and some customer cows as well. We run Black and Red angus bulls. We wean our calves in August. Our Hfrs usually start calving later on in September for a 60 day season and the cows follow shortly for 75 days. The maternal side of the bull is the most important part of our purchasing decision. We want to make great cows that do well on flint hills grass and run out all year. We do retain most of our heifers for replacements and usually sell our strs weighing 850-950 at El Dorado Livestock in December. We do a lot of our stocker business buying and selling with Superior Livestock. Barrett Broadie is our rep on the selling side. We rely on our kids along with Bud and Troy Higgs to help us look after the cattle. On March 16, 1882 Alfred J Mercer was issued Brand # 201 for his cattle and horses. The brand was a bar A. The first brand book for the state of KS was issued in 1939 and the Mercer Bros have a brand that was issued June 20, 1939. It is the bar cross brand on the Right hip just like we still use today. The Mercer Bros went on to just be David Mercer, he transferred the brand to Rick Griffin and now it is Pioneer Ranch LC.

Dear Producers, As always, thank you for your interest in our program. If we didn’t have loyal customers, we wouldn’t be in business. We have been honored as one of the largest seedstock producers in America for several years. Without you, this would not be possible. Starting with one cow in 1977 seems like centuries ago!! Angus are still bred for maternal - 40+ years. We push the enve - lope, but do our best to keep BALANCE in as many traits as possible. Not surprising one or two traits, selected for extremes, can ruin a cowherd. Charolais started in 2000 to give customers options for their pro - gram. We have been fortunate to create genetics that are some of the highest marbling, ribeye, carcass weight and growth in the breed. However, soundness, udder quality, disposition and fertility still have to come first. Copperheads are another option. Moderate, deep, thick, easy keeping in a hybred package. Carcass is outstanding. Bulls are working from Nebraska to New York to far South Florida and every - where in between. Profit for customers is our bottom-line goal. We provide difference breeds for use as you see fit. We are not a one-breed outfit, because we are convinced that the most total profit is hard to squeeze out of one breed for commercial producers. Semen testing bulls 35 to 40 days prior to turnout is recommended for all herds. Generally, bulls retested 30 days (+ -) do retest OK, but it can cause panic when tested a few days before turnout!

This has proven to be a workable option for both parties. We believe the beef business is about working together. In some cases the breeders may show other than Fink on the registration certificate, but rest assured they are guaranteed with the same genetics, service and conditions. Bull Thoughts After 40+ years in the business, these random thoughts, ideas, etc. (that potentially could save producers a lot of headaches). * Test bulls 35-40 days before turnout, that leaves time for a re-test if needed. The semen that was collected on any given day was actu - ally produced approximately 60 days before testing!!! * Testing early also will give producers time to clear up any possible injuries, etc. * Quick removal of a limping bull due to injury, front or rear sprain, etc., and putting them in a small pen can clear up many bulls. Just like anyone with a sprain or torn ligament - less movement (with no cows to chase in the same pen) will help. * Quick treatment of foot rot, any infection of any kind (even with a dart gun is great). Medication at the first stages is extremely important. Obviously getting bulls out ASAP for rest, but medication in the system ASAP is the best step. * Always best to run older bulls together. Most broken penis injuries occur when younger bulls are in the same breeding pasture with older, aggressive bulls. One bull is breeding when the other bull plows into him from the side. * To many bulls in a pasture is generally worse than to few. Space, time, fighting, chasing, mounting, ends up many times in broken penis, broken legs and injured bulls. When bulls keep their mind on the business at hand, they behave better. * Vesicular adenitis is a seminal vesicular infection which can be caused at any time due to infections, of any kind, that can move through the animals system to seminal vesicules. This causes white blood cells in the semen which prevents veterinarians from passing a BSE check. We are not Veterinarians but if this should occur (not very often) have your veterinarian give full dosages of Mitcol, Draxtin and LA300 all at the same time. All three drugs do basically the same thing but each drug does just a touch different, most bulls will clear up fine, and retest in 4 weeks.

Angus Bull Introduction
Fink Angus Program ~ Since 1977 We have seen all the extremes in the beef industry. Every extreme, every time, has led commercial producers down the wrong road. The trouble is generation turnover in the cattle industry is slow. When several problems appear due to extremes, plugging all the holes takes 4 more generations of “Flex Tape” to TRY to fix -and genetic problems will still be there ready to pop out. We have tried to stay in the middle of the road genetically for over 40 years. Balanced genetics that we feel are the most profit-making long term, for everyone. Right or wrong, that’s the program. Average EPDs for a “maternal” breed such as Angus may be about right. Take note the $EN, Mature Weight, Scrotal, and Heifer Pregnancy (HP) are as important as “marbling” and yearling weight etc. Producers can go backwards (reg - istered and commercial) chasing single traits, thinking they are going forward. It is very conceivable to gain 100# on mature cow weight in one sire use!! NOT GOOD! Making total improvement and keeping expenses (cow costs) down is the goal for profit. Marbling can be increased quickly with age and days on feed. Is it concerning that feeding time is approximately 60 days longer than it was a few years ago? Weights are increasing and if it’s the form of much more fat on a carcass (which it is) how does that compete with pork, chicken and catfish? Plus it is inefficient! The key is to watch “Fat” EPD also! Yes, it is a fine line, but when all traits are not considered then results may end up going in the wrong direction. If it takes extra fat to produce choice and prime, maybe we better use a Wagyu if that is the only goal and to keep the cowherd sound. Don’t forget the cow! Packers really don’t care about your cowherd. They just want the end product . Remember just a very few years back a lot of promotion was $B! We always called it terminal, now the Angus Association does also. How many commercial producers have “Terminal Genetics” in their herds now? Keep in mind crippled and dead fat cattle close to harvest time don’t add up very well. Always remember ~ * Fertility in the cowherd. * Control of inputs in cowherd. * Structure and longevity. * 1st and foremost for Profit. Fink bulls MUST pass a semen BSE by 14 months - No matter when they are sold or they are CANNED. (Highly related to female fertility). Progressive Cattle Podcast “I don’t know who said it, but it says ‘the problems we see today can’t be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.’ And I think we’re at a place now with ranching where we’ve used technology, and we made a lot of progress, or I should say we made a lot of change. We’re certainly productive and sometimes that additional productivity hasn’t been always coupled with greater profitability. And in my opinion, and some people disagree, for many cow-calf operations, I think we’ve maximized productivity. And there’s some data I think from a number of re- sources that would support that.”
