RTPM PROGRAM IS HERE!
THE NEW
Refreshed Courses, a New Manual, and an Updated Exam Available Now
This year, BICSI launched a redesigned Registered Communications Project Management® (RTPM®) program, revised to reflect modifications in the ICT profession. Changes to the RTPM program consist of a new manual (the Telecommunications Project Management Reference Manual (TPMRM) 2nd Edition), three revamped courses, (PM101, PM102, PM103), and an updated exam. The program was updated and aligned with the Job Task Analysis (JTA), conducted by BICSI every 3-5 years to stay current with the latest trends and changes within the ICT industry. The primary focus of the revamped program is to cover information in all phases of the project lifecycle, specifically eight major areas where learners will build their skills and abilities, falling within the following subject areas:
PHASE I: PROJECT INITIATION Gather Specific Project Information Create Initial Project Budget Estimates (rough order of magnitude), Consideration of Location Orchestrate Project Proposal Project Deliverables A B C D PHASE II: PROJECT EXECUTION
The updates to the RTPM program are designed to help ensure that the manual, course, and exam content accurately reflect job-related activities and professional standards. If you are looking to start the journey to earning your RTPM credential, the time to do so is now!

VOLUNTEER ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Those who can, do. And those who can do more, volunteer! Subject Matter Expert (SME) Spotlight: KEVIN O'BRIEN
Q: What value do you see in the credentialing exam development process? Q: What is the greatest benefit you have found while volunteering? A: Keeping the exams updated to current standards is critical to ensuring that the BICSI ICT Certification Institute remains the premier credentialing organization for our entire industry, from design to ICT project management and installation to testing. A: I learned long ago that teaching others is one of the best ways to learn, and exam development is no different. So in addition to contributing to our field as a volunteer, my own understanding of the subject matter grew deeper during the exam development effort.
Q: What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering for exam development activities? A: Contributing to BICSI exam development is a very satisfying experience. Working with other ICT professionals with varying backgrounds and expertise to develop exam content is an opportunity to take a deeper dive into ICT topics than one might encounter on the jobsite. And knowing that you've helped develop an exam for future BICSI credential holders is a great feeling. I look forward to participating again.

NEW BICSI CREDENTIAL HOLDERS CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR HARD WORK PAID OFF! COMMUNITY CORNER
I have been asked several times why I joined the BICSI Cares committee. There are two reasons that I chose this committee. My employer gave me the option to participate in a committee, and BICSI Cares needed volunteers at the time. The main, and most important reason is that my wife and I have a “special-needs” child. She was born with cerebral palsy and even though she has CP, we are blessed that it did not make her fully debilitated. If you do not have a child with a disability or know someone who does, it is hard to explain what takes place every day for the child and their parents. At the time she was born and while she was growing up, there wasn’t any outside support that we were aware of where we lived. It was a trying time for my wife and myself, as well as our daughter. COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT: BICSI CARES By: Kent Gibson, RCDD, BICSI Cares Chair

NEW BICSI CREDENTIAL HOLDERS CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR HARD WORK PAID OFF! COMMUNITY CORNER
After investigating BICSI Cares and its mission to help kids, this committee fell right in line with what I have personally dealt with. At each BICSI Conference, BICSI Cares has a presentation with the kid’s charity chosen for that specific confer- ence. At each presentation, I get emotional just knowing what our members and corporate sponsors have contributed to the charity and how those contributions will impact the charity. If you have seen our presentations, you have witnessed some of the representatives break down and start crying when they see the amount that was raised for them. This is a huge deal for them, as we choose charities with a small budget, and we want whatever we can raise to have a large impact on them and what they can provide to others. For those of you that are not familiar with BICSI Cares or how we got started, let me try to explain. BICSI Cares is a committee that was started by a joke back in the '70s. There was a meeting held in Lexington, Kentucky, and BICSI member Ray Gendron decided to pass around a hat and raise money from those attending. He probably did not anticipate the amount of money that others were willing to give for no special reason. Once he collected the money, he
then had a dilemma. What was he going to do with it? He couldn’t give it back because he did not know how much everyone gave. The answer was simple: Give the money to a charity that helps kids. From there, BICSI Cares has grown to what we have now. Many of us still to this day talk about Ray at each conference. Being part of this committee is a passion for our members. We put in a lot of hours during the conference and on Thursday, it is always worth the time we invested. If you want to get involved with BICSI and be part of a committee, we are looking for new members. You will not regret being part of such a worthwhile cause. You can click here to fill out a BICSI Committee Volunteer
Application online. We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting!

More than Words from Women in BICSI “Public Speaking: An Opportunity Worth Taking” By Kim Johnson, Chief Marketing Officer at MHT Technologies and President of the PoE Consortium
We’ve all heard the statistic that women wait to apply for jobs until they meet most qualifications, while men apply when they’ve met just half. I believe this is also the case with speaking opportunities — women tend to hold themselves back. I started public speaking in the ICT industry just four years ago, and it started slowly. Since then, I’ve held 25 speaking roles at conferences and on podcasts and webinars. And the more I speak publicly, the more I’m asked to speak — it is now part of my personal and professional brand. Based on my own experience, I thought I’d share some tips.
1. OBSERVE AND REFLECT Every time you attend a conference session or a webinar, take the time to observe the speaking style and reflect on what you like and don’t like. Best practices that almost always float to the top include avoiding filler words like “um,” not reading from the slide, telling a story, using inflection, and maintaining good body language. 2. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE Once you know what you like in a speaker (and what you don’t want to repeat!), please practice. When
were just after I graduated from my MBA program. I returned to the school to speak about navigating career choices. It was a safe, comfortable environment where I could discuss topics that were my own experience. Presenting at BICSI events has been an incredible opportunity to connect directly with others in the industry, grow my speaking skills, and improve my comfort level with the technical topics I present on. But mainstage BICSI sessions were not where I started! I suggest starting with regional events, webinars, or shorter presentation times.
I started my MBA program, I felt I lacked public speaking skills, but I couldn’t avoid presentations! So, I practiced. I began by presenting to myself in front of a mirror and observing my body language. Sometimes I would record my voice and listen for filler words or inappropriate inflections. By the end of my program, I could speak confidently with much less practice. Even today, I put my ego aside, assume I can always do better, and practice. 3. START SMALL, START LOCAL Some of my first speaking opportunities
PAGE 22
COMMUNITY CORNER
4. JOIN A GROUP OR PANEL For the past three years, I’ve gathered intelligent people who can present unique points of view on relevant ICT topics — and it has just happened to often be women. Presenting with others helps alleviate the pressure of carrying the whole session on your shoulders. If you get a question from the audience that stumps you, someone else will likely have your back. Gather your group! 5. REMEMBER THAT THE AUDIENCE WANTS YOU TO SUCCEED When people attend a presentation, they do so hoping to get something out of it. No one wants you to fail. If you enter every speaking role with the understanding that the audience is rooting for you, it can help alleviate pressure to be perfect. Ultimately, the benefits of public speaking have been immense. It has expanded my network, directly contributed to my professional and personal growth, and introduced me to amazing people. So please don’t discount the opportunity — everyone can become a public speaker, and everyone has knowledge worth sharing!
