Tree planting season begins
Trees for Tomorrow in Russell Township is looking for volunteers to help plant trees at three upcoming events. May 3 they will plant trees at Rodolphe Latreille Park in Limoges, starting at 9 a.m., and at Bourdeau Park in Embrun at 10 a.m. On May 10, they will be planting along the Em- brun-Russell fitness trail beginning at 9 a.m. Volunteers are asked to contact Josée Smeltzer at jsmeltzer@hotmail. com for the Limoges planting, Eric Ba- zinet at ericbazinet@russell.ca for the Embrun planting, or Steve Mihok at smihok@rogers.com for the trail plan- ting. The organization is a non-profit group in Russell Township concerned about tree coverage and biodiversity. Their stated goal is to promote and improve existing trees’ health and to plant as many new trees as they can. Russell Township’s tree cover is more than two-thirds lower than the amount needed. Tree removal is cau- sing loss of biodiversity.

EMBRUN | Man’s best friends in Russell Township won’t have to wait too long for a place of their own to run free. Council accepted a recommendation from administration during its April 22 ses- sion to allow construction to begin on the community dog park project whenever the organizing committee in charge is ready to go ahead. Last year council agreed to set aside a par- cel of municipal land for use as an off-leash dog park in Russell Township. Council also approved a municipal contribution to the project both to create a parking lot for dog- owners visiting at the park and to provide support funding for the facility’s annual op- eration cost. Vol à main armée
La Police provinciale de l’Ontario, détachement de Russell, a arrêté deux suspects relativement à un vol à main armée qui a eu lieu au Ultramar à Limoges. Le 27 avril, vers minuit, des agents se sont rendus sur les lieux. Un employé de la station ser- vice a affirmé avoir été menacé avec un objet aiguisé par un homme alors qu’un autre homme montait la garde devant le magasin. Les deux suspects ont quitté les lieux à pied avec une somme indéterminée d’argent. Les deux hommes ont par la suite été retrouvés par les autorités. Jamal Brown, âgé de 23 ans de Limoges, et Luke Robichaud, âgé de 24 de Limoges, devront tous deux répondre aux accusa- tions suivantes: vol qualifié avec usage d’une arme; déguisement dans un dessein criminel et défaut de se conformer à une ordonnance.

One voice for local basketball
Basketball in our area will never be the same… our two local basketball organi- zations have merged to combine their ef- forts to promote local basketball. Both the Prescott-Russell Basketball Association (PRBA) and the Russell Basketball Associa- tion (RBA) have joined forces to better serve the growing need for both boys’ and girls’ basketball programs in the area. The new Prescott-Russell Basketball As- sociation is going to provide a one-stop shop for all basketball activities in our area. Various programs will offer affordable bas- ketball for everyone regardless of skill level – both competitive and developmental.
There are programs for all ages, including a weekly adult basketball program available to those beyond their high school glory days. The new Prescott-Russell Basketball As- sociation will have a competitive stream, known as the Rockets. This will offer com- petitive basketball from ages 9-17. The As- sociation will continue to offer develop- mental programs for ages 6 and up. The Rockets coaching staff consists of qualified Basketball Ontario coaches who bring years of competitive and develop- mental coaching to the new group. These coaches have coached at local, regional
and provincial competitions with incredible success for a small-town organization. As with any volunteer organization, there is a need to constantly seek new coaches and volunteers. Be it coaching, managing, being a team treasurer, helping a 6 year-old learn how to dribble, the opportunities are endless. Our association offers both Bas- ketball Ontario certification in-house and coach mentoring to develop our future coaches. For high school students, we also offer a volunteer/community service hour program to help achieve your high school commitments. This is a perfect way to give something back to the community while
having fun at the same time and develop- ing your leadership skills. Of course, we were influenced by the American propaganda, but through comedy and drama, many people were introduced to the realities of Southeast Asian countries. Upon arriving in Vietnam, after a stop in Bangkok (Thailand) and Siem Reap (Cambo- dia), we were prepared for the eternal sunny hot weather of March, the pointy straw hats and the Pho noodles. We were wondering, however, if the Vietnamese people still bore resentment against the Americans, and if this would influence the way we would be treated. The short answer is yes… and no. It seemed like half the population in the old southern capital of Saigon would prefer we refrain from visiting their country, while the other half would like to resemble us. So the service we received could be in stark contrast from one time to another. This contrast could also be seen on the streets, where 5 million motorbikes are on the road every single day. This fast pace city boasts high-end stores and personal drivers on one side of the road while the other is plagued with street vendors, peddlers and beware-of-thieves. In this whirlwind of people, most of the time, Westerners don’t know what’s up or what’s down. We did learn, however, about what’s down once we left Ho Chi Minh City and traveled a few hundred kilometers north. The Cu Chi people were clever individuals who had to improvise methods of combat and concealment without the technology of big cities or countries. The tunnels they built were initially to communicate between villages, which turned into a village onto itself when it became necessary. I could write a whole book on these people, what they represented to their country as militia, as citizens and as allies, but I’m sure it has been done many times over and this is not the topic of this article. It does however leave one to reflect on the strength and perseverance of these Vietnamese people. In Hoi An, it’s a whole different story and culture. This old French administrative hub, designated as a World Heritage Site in 1999, has been kept mostly in its original splen- dour, apart from the hundreds of tailor shops that litter the core of the city. One cannot walk more than 10 paces without running into another ‘local’ tailor shop. People from all over the world come to Hoi An to get a tailor-made suit at a very reduced cost while enjoying the beach between fittings. Regrettably, quality is not always at the party, and many foreigners leave the city with a sour taste in their mouth. Fortunately for us, we found a gem, or an angel with a needle, in the haystack of ordinary, pattern-exhausted tailors. We left Hoi An with a suit in our luggage and a foreign tailor for life. We couldn’t let our visa expire, without going to Hanoi, the capital of this coastal country. Being tourists as well as teachers, we often have to bypass popular touristic destinations, sometimes without concern, as we prefer discovering local and hidden treasures, but at times with some regret, fearing we have not been able to fully grasp each city’s or country’s culture on our passage. Our extended stay in Hanoi gave us many opportunities to take part in different organized tours, but we chose instead to book the services of Hanoi Little Ambassadors Free Tours. This is a wonderful way to explore the city on budget while helping tourism students get experience. We thought we would be satisfied with exploring the city by foot while engaging in conversation with the local student guides, but through fellow Canadian friends we have met on the road, we have been enticed to visit Ha Long Bay, this geological marvel of limestone karsts islets that clutter the northeast shores. I may not have fully adopted the Southeast Asian way of life, but these islets, which ceaselessly whisper the secrets of 20 million years of existence, have certainly enchanted me.
