The Corn Palace • Mitchell • Times Vary The Corn Palace Festival will celebrate the annual redecoration of the famous attraction with carnival rides, specialty vendors, local produce, arts, crafts, photography contests, food, and live music. Celebrating 10 Years
Arts South Dakota has spent a decade aiding and supporting the arts. The non-partisan, nonprofit service organization has been here to ensure the people and organizations creating and supporting art across the state have the advocacy, connections, and resources they need to thrive. “We've grown from an idea into an organization with real reach,” said executive director Jim Speirs . They’ve built professional development programs like the Arts Leadership Institute and the Augustana Music Academy , launched grant programs including the Artist Emergency Relief Fund , and have become a trusted partner to the South Dakota Arts Council , the tourism industry, and the education community.

Along the way Speirs says they’ve deepened their advocacy work at the legislature, have grown their State Arts Conference , and have built a statewide network of thousands of artists, arts organizations, and supporters “who help carry this work forward” with the nonprofit. The small, but dedicated staff of four is celebrating 10 years of success by continuing what they do best every month, including sending out their weekly newsletter, posting over 2,000 arts events on their online calendar, hosting webinars and community arts council cohort meetings, and more. During this milestone year, they have honored where Arts South Dakota has been and where they’re headed. The 2026 State Arts Conference in downtown Rapid City this past April was a big part of that celebration.
Held April 24-25 with around 150 attendees, Arts in Healing SD explored how the arts support wellness and health across the state. The keynote speaker was Christopher Bailey , who is the co-director of the Jameel Arts and Health Lab and formerly with the WHO Arts and Health program in Geneva, Switzerland. Ariadne Albright was also featured, who is the creative aging SD coordinator for the South Dakota Arts Council , and whose work spans healthcare, academic, community, and correctional settings. Friday's preconference through Arts South Dakota’s Arts Leadership Institute offered an intensive look at arts in healing, and Saturday's full conference brought together artists, administrators, policymakers, and arts lovers for keynotes, workshops, and conversation.

“Before 2016, our state's arts community didn't have one organization pulling people together to advocate , connect , and educate at a statewide level—we set out to fill that gap and give the arts sector a unified voice with policymakers and the public alike.” JIM SPEIRS
“It was a fantastic gathering—the kind of conference where new partnerships form and our statewide creative community walks away feeling more connected,” said Speirs. “Falling in our 10th anniversary year gave it extra meaning as we celebrated a decade of this work together.” The State Arts Conference is biennial, with the next one taking place in 2028 on the east side of the state. This event and other Arts South Dakota offerings are decided on and planned by the staff and board of 15 members, which represent 11 communities. They most recently hosted what they like to call “arts summer camps for grownups.”The Augustana Music Academy ran July 6-9 on the Augustana University campus in Sioux Falls and gave K-12 music educators hands-on professional development. “This year included a brand-new session on electronic music production led by DJ Enferno , who's performed for millions of people around the world and toured with Madonna ,” said Speirs. On July 13-16, they hosted the 27th Annual Arts Education Institute in Aberdeen, offering 18 different workshops for teachers and administrators (though being an educator to attend wasn’t required).

Next up is the Governor’s Awards in the Arts February 17, 2027 in Fort Pierre, which is a lifetime achievement award for South Dakota creatives, artists, supporters, and organizations that truly make the arts happen in communities. Ninety-eight awards have been given out, with five being awarded in 2025. Throughout the anniversary year they’re also sharing success stories from the first decade, thanking the artists and communities who have been part of the journey, and introducing new opportunities that set the stage for the next 10 years. “I'm proud of the network we've built—the fact that a teacher in Aberdeen, an artist in Rapid City, and a nonprofit board member in Sioux Falls can all point to something Arts South Dakota gave them, whether that's direct support, a workshop, or just the sense that someone statewide is advocating on their behalf,” said Speirs. For those who have yet to get involved with and take advantage of Arts South Dakota, Speirs says the easiest first step is to visit the website and sign up for the weekly newsletter, which shares events, grant opportunities, job postings, and arts advocacy alerts happening around the state. “Stay in tune with arts issues and when we need grassroots arts advocacy,” said Speirs. “From there, people can look into our programs directly—attend an Arts Happy Hour near them, register for the State Arts Conference, nominate someone for a Governor’s Awards in the Arts, and attend Arts Advocacy Day in Pierre.”

Organizations can join as members and individuals can become donors, both of which help the nonprofit form a unified voice for the arts. Looking into the organization’s future, Speirs says there’s more work to do. “I'd like to keep growing sustainable, dedicated public funding for the arts in South Dakota, and to make sure every corner of the state—not just our bigger cities—has real access to arts programming and support,” said Speirs.
For now the nonprofit says they’re thankful for the artists, teachers, donors, board members, and communities who made their first decade possible. Cody Ulven of Sioux Falls has always been intrigued by the business side of everything, fixated on why things are the way they are. One topic that kept him up at night was Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate (EVA) slides. Every retail store he entered, he says he automatically noticed the popular slip-on sandals taking over shelf space. “From higher end retail stores, to Walmart , Costco , and Target —everyone seemed to have their own version of EVA slides, and they all looked very similar,” said Ulven. “Plus, everyone was wearing them.” EVA slides are known for their casual, waterproof design, but the entrepreneur wanted to know more. Ulven says he became obsessed with how they were made and what the difference was between off-brand and name brands. Cosmetically there was very little difference, and the material felt the same. Ulven says he didn’t understand why consumers were willing to shell out cash
for certain brands, but others grabbed the cheap Joe Schmo version. “I understand how a brand can influence price, however, my simple brain couldn’t understand a five-six times price increase for two products that looked and felt so similar,” he explained. “I thought there had to be some sort of internal component (other than brand) I wasn’t seeing.” Ulven cut open both pairs with a box cutter to see if there was some sort of unseen structural component to justify that kind of a price difference. There wasn’t. “The price premium was simply related to the brand,” he recalled. “I was shocked.” He wondered why all of the products were molded to look like they had a separate upper, midsole, and sole, and why they weren’t built where there was actual separation between them. Ulven started calling around to different manufacturers to ask if that idea and concept was possible.
The answer in the United States was “no.”

“There are only two EVA footwear manufacturers in the U.S.—one in Georgia and one in Idaho,” he said. “After they both told me it wasn’t possible, I started looking overseas.” Overseas manufacturers also told him it wasn’t possible. Ulven says hearing “no” over and over again only made him feel more invigorated to find a solution. After more research, he reached out to engineer Ryan Schuette of Definitive 3D & Engineering to describe his thought process and to see how credible his concept was, if credible at all. With Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, Schuette was able to provide Ulven with specific manufacturing specifications and CAD files for the three-part design. “All of the companies I had spoken to thus far only used one way to manufacture EVA, and now all I needed to find was a footwear manufacturer who could execute this new version,” said Ulven. “After many more calls, I found one in China.” When his current manufacturer told him his engineered design was manufacturable, Ulven says he knew it was only a matter of time before he would figure out how to make everything else happen. Step one: protect his idea. The new business owner contacted Kaufhold & Dix Patent Law and filed a 20-year utility patent on the three-piece construction. Step two: hone in on details of the design, which were comfort and color. “The construction of the product is undoubtedly unique, however, it’s what the construction offers that makes our products stand out in the footwear space,” described Ulven. “Not only does it allow for color blocking (three separate colors between the upper, midsole, and sole in all EVA), but it also allows for us to use different densities between the parts.” This includes having a softer midsole (which increases comfort) and a denser outsole (which handles the ground). On the underside of the midsole placed above the heel is an increased amount of softer EVA that Ulven says is extended down through the sandal and sits flush with the sole called the Comfort Dome , which is another part of the patent. The three-piece process allowed for a variety of colors on each layer of the slides. Ulven says he spent endless hours choosing each custom color without existing pantones.

“I wasn’t aware of how much goes into color selection," said Ulven. “Everything must be right— the temperature, the hue, the saturation, the gradient, the color relationships … not to mention what colors are the most marketable based upon seasonality.” Step three: branding, branding, branding. The slogan— Built Different —stemmed from the literal unique design process and from the ideal consumer. Each sandal was created with the vision that they would be part of each customer’s individuality. “To me, people who are built differently are those who acknowledge what makes them unique, work toward accepting their uniqueness, evolve into the person they are meant to be, and they embrace that journey,” said Ulven. “That’s built different.”
The name— Banks & Duck —was a little more personal. When looking at other successful brands, Ulven says it all kept coming back to authenticity. What was authentic to him were the slang terms “buck” and “dank,” which he used a lot growing up. “My friends and I still use those words to this day, and my kids even use them. Dank is always good, and buck explains a level of intensity,” said Ulven. “Long story short, I switched the ‘d’ from dank and the ‘b’ from buck around, and that’s where Banks & Duck was born.” The founder acquired private investors and secured a distribution deal with Scheels , which will premiere his first collection the DayONE slides in late summer or early fall.
Products will also be available online at his website, which will launch soon. “It’s difficult to put into words what launch day will feel like,” he said. “However, when I step back and look at the full picture, I took an idea for a product and designed it, engineered it, patented it, raised private equity for it, built a brand around it, established international manufacturing, and sold it to a national retail chain. “Art has played an important role in shaping how America sees itself,” said South Dakota Art Museum director Donna Merkt . America in Art is an exhibition at the South Dakota Art Museum at South Dakota State University in Brookings running through January 2, 2027. The exhibition explores the people, places, ideals, contradictions, achievements, possibilities, and stories of the nation. “Looking back at the last 250 years also asks us to look forward,” added Merkt. “The exhibition invites visitors to consider not only what America has been, but what we hope it might become over the next 250 years.”
Merkt emphasizes how vital art is to the development of our perceptions of the nation. “We recognize the faces of George Washington , Abraham Lincoln , and other national figures in part because artists helped make those images familiar, repeatable, and symbolic, often with the support of public institutions,” she added. For this exhibition, Merkt says the key question was not “What happened over 250 years?” but rather “How have people understood, experienced, imagined, challenged, and represented America?”

The exhibition is drawn from the museum’s collection, while also utilizing key loans with the goal of expanding the stories, themes, questions, and interests that emerged from a community survey conducted to help inform what people wanted to see. In the survey, one question was asked of the public: “What should be included in an exhibition titled America in Art at the South Dakota Art Museum?” In the responses, some hoped for celebration and patriotism, while others asked for South Dakota stories with depictions of landscapes, pioneer life, and agrarian life, according to Merkt. Many respondents expressed they would like to see a complete view of the nation, including voices that have too long been left out of conversations regarding the United States, such as Native American perspectives and immigrant stories. The necessity for genuine and meaningful depictions of diverse communities and lived experiences was apparent. “The responses revealed the complexity of the topic and confirmed the need for a broad, layered, and nuanced approach,” said Merkt. THE SOUTH DAKOTA ART MUSEUM’S HUMBLE BEGINNINGS The South Dakota General Federation of Women’s Clubs members first imagined a permanent home for the visual arts in South Dakota in 1940. The museum was established by the South Dakota State Legislature in 1957 and opened in 1970. Today, it has significant, broad holdings including more than 7,000 works of art.

The survey also clearly communicated people wanted the lens to portray a South Dakota based framework. Merkt says this does not narrow the point of view, but makes “the national story more specific, grounded, and honest.” “The exhibition is rooted in South Dakota, but it is not limited to South Dakota,” added Merkt. “It uses this place as a point of entry into a much larger national story.” Many South Dakota artists are featured, as well as artists from other states, and people who immigrated to America—a range that matters when it comes to representing the full richness and breadth of the collective story. “South Dakota is not outside the story of America,” clarified Merkt. “It is one of the places where national ideals and contradictions can be seen with particular clarity: in histories of Native homelands and broken treaties, westward expansion and settlement, farming and rural life, immigration and belonging, military service, incarceration, and environmental change.” Artwork in the exhibition is not arranged chronologically as a “march through history,” but rather, centered around ideas, letting pieces from various eras speak next to one another, creating new conversations alongside different perspectives and places. For example, Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe is presented next to Oglala Lakota artist Keith BraveHeart’s 200 Horse Give Aways .

The South Dakota artist was inspired by Warhol’s work to create his piece, but Braveheart focused on the Oceti Sakowin cultural practice of giving, rather than the consumerism that was often Warhol’s subject. The two pieces come together to create a new conversation “about image, identity, value, and what different cultures choose to recognize or elevate.” Howardena Pindell’s Slavery Memorial Narratives (on loan from the collection of Arthur Primas ) is exhibited alongside a doll representing Scarlett O’Hara by Jerry Ross Barrish . This pairing conveys two very different visions of the plantation South, considering the distance between plantation mythology and historical reality. “Pindell’s work asks us to see land and water as witnesses to history,” said Merkt. “Across the darkened sky, names appear like traces of lives carried through slavery’s violence and aftermath. Below, the names of slave ports locate that history geographically, tying the Middle Passage and the transatlantic slave trade to specific places.” A differing cultural memory is introduced by the reference to Gone with the Wind —one shaped by beauty, nostalgia, and inheritance. Placed near Pindell’s memorial landscape, that fantasy becomes harder to sustain.

The first section titled We the People: Identities, Voices, Perspectives focuses on the “human side of the exhibition,” asking visitors to ponder how we come to understand who we are, belonging, and the connection to others. “One of the things this section brings forward is that identity is not only personal,” revealed Merkt. “It is shaped through family, work, migration, tradition, community, popular culture, and the expectations placed on us by others.”
Merkt says this section is an invitation to think about self definition, visibility, belonging as an active thing to participate in, and the totality of voices making up America who have not been equally visible or valued. The second section titled Of the United States: Land, Place, Power moves from people to place, Merkt says, considering “how land affects people’s sense of home, history, and connection to the nation.” “Land in America is never just background,” said Merkt. “It carries memories. It supports livelihoods. It holds spiritual, cultural, and ancestral meaning.”

Labor, wealth, land, and violence are tied together, economically and morally shaping the United States—from Manifest Destiny , and the taking of Native homelands, to agriculture and plantation slavery. “The section also asks who gets to call a place home, who is pushed out, who benefits from land, and who decides what is preserved, developed, remembered, or erased,” added Merkt. This section asks visitors to consider how relationships between people and the planet shape life, and how the American story is influenced by the historical environments. “Incarceration, borders, monuments, conservation, and environmental change show that land can be used to organize movement, control access, create public memory, or define responsibility,” said Merkt. Finally, Secure the Blessings of Liberty: Promise and Paradox relies on “the ideals that have shaped American civic life” for definition. Those ideals include freedom, rights, opportunity, service, equality, and participation in democracy. “This section considers American ideals alongside the realities that have complicated them,” clarified Merkt. “It includes works that touch on Native histories, including violence against Native peoples, while also acknowledging the long and significant history of Native military service.”
