Irvine Senior Connection - Winter 2021

Winter 2021

Happy, Healthy Hearts February is American Heart Month, and a great time to raise your awareness about heart health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Along with physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and getting plenty of sleep, eating a well-balanced diet can help keep your heart happy and healthy. Below are six heart-healthy diet tips that can help prevent heart disease.

• Practice portion control. Monitoring howmuch you eat is just as important as choosing healthy foods to eat. • Add fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegeta- bles are good sources of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. • Choose whole grains. Whole grains are a good source of fiber and other nutrients.

• Limit unhealthy fats. Foods that have higher trans fats can increase your blood cholesterol and your risk of heart attack and stroke. • Select low-fat proteins. Leanmeats, poultry, fish, beans, and eggs are some of your best sources of protein. • Limit sodium. Eating more fresh foods, rather than canned or processed foods, can help reduce your sodium intake.

With these heart-healthy tips inmind, you can planmeals that are delicious and nutritious. Irvine Senior Services offers a variety of programs and education lectures that also promote heart health. Call 949-724-6900 or visit yourirvine.org for a complete a schedule of upcoming programs.
