Disaster Preparedness

Emergencies and disasters can strike quickly and without warning, making it necessary to evacuate your neighborhood or be confined to your home. Older adults can be especially vulnerable during an emergency due to limited physical mobility, chronic health conditions, and dependency on assistive devices. The below steps, provided by the Red Cross, will help you be prepared if a disaster occurs.

1. Plan to Stay or Go: Develop a two-week plan to shelter in place or evacuate. 2. Help to Evacuate: Determine who will help you if evacuation is needed. 3. Power Needs: Include steps to power and operate medical devices or keep medicines cold. 4. Fire Safety: Identify two ways out of every room to escape a home fire. 5. Communication to Emergency Contacts: Identify contacts and how you’ll notify them if phone and internet communications are disrupted. 6. Basic Emergency Supplies: Use a checklist to obtain what you’ll need in your home and car during an emergency.

7. Manage Medical and Personal Needs: Keep at least 30 days of medications and extra assistive items in emergency supplies. 8. Batteries: Have extra on hand for your battery- powered devices, such as radios and flashlights. 9. Locate Important Documents: Use a checklist to collect and copy documents, including identifications, financial, legal, and medical papers you may need. 10.Medical Information: Keep an up-to-date list of medical conditions, allergies, medications, prescription records, doctors, and insurance cards.

It is recommend you review, practice, and refresh your emergency plan every six months. To learn more about disaster preparedness, join us at Trabuco Center Thursday, October 7 for the Evacuation Tips for Seniors During Disasters presentation. Register for class #48329 at yourirvine.org . You are also encouraged to participate in the Great Shakeout Thursday, October 21 to practice what to do in case of an earthquake. Learn more at shakeout.org . Disasters can happen at any time, but being prepared can make all the difference.
