CONTENTS

Dear Friends, Irvine Senior Services has some wonderful programs and events scheduled this spring! Mark your calendars for the Senior Services Open House on April 27, and Exploring Our World on May 3 (see Page 4). Be sure to sign-up for the Spring Into Health Fitness Challenge beginning May 1, where the more you exercise, the more opportunities you have to win prizes (see Page 17). We are also excited to announce the return of the Billiards Tournament on June 7 (see Page 11). You can learn more about these events and programs in this issue of Irvine Senior Connection . April is National Volunteer Month, and we take this opportunity to thank the more than 315 individuals who share their time and talents to serve the Irvine senior community. In 2022, our volunteers contrib- uted more than 10,700 hours in various areas, such as preparing and serving meals in the Rose Garden Café, delivering meals to homebound seniors, and teaching interactive classes virtually and in person. Please join us in celebrating National Volunteer Month by express- ing gratitude for their continued service. For more information on our programs and services, visit one of our three senior centers or irvineseniors.org .

Find Your Balance

Fitness Tips to Reduce Fall Risk

Irvine Senior Services offers a variety of pro- grams that can help reduce your risk of falling. Fitness center staff at Rancho Senior Center and Trabuco Center can help you identify exercises for improved balance. In addition to our regular health and fitness classes (see Pages 13–22), we encourage you to take part in the Spring Into Health Fitness Challenge (see Page 17), which offers a variety of classes to help improve your fitness and reduce fall risk. For more information on any of these programs, visit yourirvine.org .

As we age, the risk of falling increases as does the severity of the consequences of a fall. According to the Centers for Disease Control, every year one in four older adults will experience a fall. Falls may cause physical injury and can have psychological consequences as well. People who have experienced a fall in the past are more likely to have a fear of falling, which in turn further increases the risk of falling. The good news is there are many things you can do to help reduce your risk of falling. Below are tips from the national award- winning FallProof Balance and Mobility Program. • Engage in exercises challenging balance, such as sitting on a stability ball, seated marching, or standing on one leg. • Make use of assisted walking devices, such as canes, walkers, and wheelchairs, when necessary. • Practice variable step patterns, such as stepping forward, sidestepping, or stepping diagonally. • Remove fall risks within your home by: ƒ Removing or securing loose rugs and cords; ƒ Installing grab bars where needed, such as in the shower or beside the bed; ƒ Installing sufficient lighting; ƒ Consult with your physician about your medications to reduce the risk of harmful drug interactions, which can increase fall risk.

Challenge Your Balance and Stability with Health & Fitness Classes. See Pages 13–22.
