Dear Friends, As we come to the end of 2023, Irvine Senior Services looks forward to celebrating the holiday season with a wide variety of programs and events. Don’t miss the annual Irvine Global Village Festival Saturday, October 14, featuring an afternoon of enter- tainment, cultural displays, international cuisine, a global marketplace, and much more (see Page 7). Enjoy a morning of Halloween fun at the Trick-or-Treat event Friday, October 27 (see Page 4). Volunteers will pass out goodies and lead fun activities for children. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Heather Henderson at 949-724-6096 or volunteer@cityofirvine.org . Help honor the brave men and women who served our country through the Veterans Day Recognition program (see Page 15). If you know a veteran age 50 or older who is an Irvine resident, we would like to thank them for their service by placing an American flag in their yard or at their door in honor of Veterans Day. Flags will be delivered November 7–8. Trabuco Center will host the Twilight Holiday Social Friday, December 8 (see Page 4). Celebrate the holidays with family and friends while enjoying hors d'oeuvres, entertainment, and dancing at this annual event. For more information on the events and programs highlighted throughout this issue of the Irvine Senior Connection, visit one of our three senior centers, or go to irvineseniors.org . We wish you a happy and healthy holiday season! Sincerely yours, Sandra L. Salcedo Community Services Manager

Get Tech Smart
Improve Your Computer Skills with Technology Classes. Older adults have historically been less likely to use technology in everyday life, but the COVID- 19 pandemic made it an important tool to access services and stay connected. Today, seniors con- tinue to embrace technology as a cornerstone for independent living. According to AARP, nearly eight in 10 adults aged 50 and older say technol- ogy has become an integral part of their lives, and they use it frequently to connect with loved ones. Technology is also used for entertainment, day-to-day living, staying healthy, learning a new skill, and more. While many older adults continue to familiar- ize themselves with technology, it can still be difficult to learn and navigate. According to AARP, 68% of adults aged 50 and older don't feel today's technology is designed with them in mind. Irvine Senior Services offers a variety of technology programs to help older adults improve their skills. Whether you are a beginner, look- ing for one-on-one assistance, or you just need a place check your email, there is something to meet your needs. Sign up for technology programs: • Cathy's Computer Corner offers an introductory class, private technology lessons, and unique workshops. • A Computer Membership provides access to computer workstations and printers in the Lee Tjhio Technology Lab at Lakeview Senior Center, as well as laptops at Rancho Senior Center and Trabuco Center.
• Intro to Apps provides step-by-step instructions on how to access and use many different types of apps. • Phone Basics teaches you the basic functions of your smartphone, including how to make your phone louder, send text messages, and connect to Bluetooth devices. • Technology Tutoring provides individual tutoring sessions to help you learn to use your smartphone, tablet, or laptop to its full capacity. For more information on any of these programs, visit yourirvine.org .
